  • Should you buy the fastest SSD for Pro Photo + Video Workflow? The answer will surprise you! This video will answer the question which SSD you should buy and how fast should it be. There are lots of specs out there in the market and we have a tendency to focus strictly on specs and larger transfer numbers / speed which also means higher price tag. This may not necessary be what you need in your workflow. This video will walk you through various types of SSD available in the market today and advise you with evidence as to which one you should buy. Here's a hint, don't spend any more than you need to, find out more in this video.

    I like that your videos are so relevant. Have you tested Lightroom catalog import, catalog save, or preview load times for Lightroom with faster disks? I think these sorts of common tasks would make a difference with a faster disk. Also you mentioned a faster disk will not likely read cards faster, but I think a fast external disk should back up a large catalog much faster.

    • @ArtIsRight
      @ArtIsRight  ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Yes I have tested those extensive, and no faster read write does not make a difference. These programs are never coded for high through put. The latest statement "... but I think a fast external disk should back up a large catalog much faster." It all depends, if you rely on LRC no if you manual copy the catalog then perhaps. But you are forgetting 1 big fundamental. LRC cat and preview files, even though we see each of it as 1 file. One is technically a SQL Lite database and the other is a container full of subfolder based on LRC folder preview structure. And none of these transfer fast, lots of bits to transfer.

    This video is 1 year old but still an eye opener. Didn't really expect the results are this close for non-continuous tasks. This makes my next drive purchase decision a lot easier. Thanks!

    • @ArtIsRight
      @ArtIsRight  9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thank you and the result is still the same today as well and will continue to be unless there's a major underpinning changes in the app, which, let's face it, now a day that chance is 0 to none and even if they change some of the fundamental, disk IO is rarely ever anything that they touched on. I have seen this in LRC past.

      The only time (other than moving a ton of huge files) I notice the difference between a slower SSD and a faster SSD is when I am previewing many thumbnails of large photoshop files in finder at the same time in icon view.
      I see a SSD with 2800MB/s speed loads all thumbnails in full preview roughly 40% faster than a SSD with 800MB/s speed. But I am still unsure if it's worth such a huge difference in costs.

    • @ArtIsRight

      Moving files yes and previewing in finder yes but that is such a smaller percentage of the usage.

      No all Synology machine, for consumer only on the 12+ bay models i.e. DS2422+ and on the enterprise models the XS and XS+ series. So far the DS1821+ is still open. And based on what I've seen so far, drives still works but it is not preferred to Synology. I don't like the lock in but it is not to bad yet. I still prefer their software and SHR - Synology Hybrid RAID, which is something that QNAP does not have. It also allows for me to expand in the array in a way that is not easily done with traditional RAID. So that benefit alone is worth wonders for me.

I'm trying to understand how much faster the editing process and overall CP1 performance is when both the catalog and referenced RAW files are on the internal SSD compared to having the RAW files on an external SSD? Does having one of these faster SSD thunderbolt drives help when editing if the RAW files are stored on the external drive? Is it better and more responsive to have the CP1 catalog file on the internal SSD if I keep the RAW files on an external drive? I'm more concerned about performance using CP1 than I am how long it take to import/export files to a drive. thank you.

      I'm trying to understand how much faster the editing process and overall CP1 performance is when both the catalog and referenced RAW files are on the internal SSD compared to having the RAW files on an external SSD?
      Nothing at all really, look at the Read and Write when you are working with C1, it does not peak that much at all, modern SSD even the old 5 GB/s will work just fine and not bottle neck.
      Does having one of these faster SSD thunderbolt drives help when editing if the RAW files are stored on the external drive?
      It would seem like so, but that is a huge misconception. Again app does not use that much IO.
      Is it better and more responsive to have the CP1 catalog file on the internal SSD if I keep the RAW files on an external drive?
      You can try that, I have done that with LRC and it does not change anything. I feel it would be the same with C1
      I'm more concerned about performance using CP1 than I am how long it take to import/export files to a drive. thank you.

    I wish I would have found this video a week ago. It would have saved me a few days of researching about whether to buy the fastest NVME SSD and Thunderbolt 3 enclosure I could afford vs. a cheaper NVME SSD and USB 3.1.2 enclosure. Asking around on sites like Reddit I kept getting replies that “faster is always better” and I almost pulled the trigger on a 970 EVO Plus and TB3 enclosure. But then it dawned on me… if I am importing media from SD cards and archiving media on HDD, exactly when will I enjoy the benefit of ~2500Mbps from my TB3 NVME external drive? As you said, your fastest dive is only ever as fast as the slowest link in the chain. Even during editing that drive likely never breaks 300Mps and is usually running at about ~100Mbps. The only situation where an ultra fast SSD makes sense would be if you are backing up media to an equally fast SSD. For my workflow I don’t need that. I back up to HDD at night, so I could care less if it takes an hour to do something I could do in minutes.
    I nearly spent $180 for a 1TB NVME and TB3 enclosure that would be capable of ~1500Mbps. I ended up spending $160 for a 2TB NVME in a USB 3.2 enclosure that is capable of ~1000Mbps. Double the storage space for less money and the comfort of knowing that my workflow will never need anywhere near the theoretical maximum speed of my external SSD.

    I'm currently planning my Mac Studio purchase and trying to decide about SSD size. I like to keep all of my files for the year on a main working drive - typically on my PC this has been an internal 14TB drive. I need 14 - 20 TB a year for this workflow.
    Given that your test showed the max transfer speed used by LRC was around 200 MB/s, it seems like I can use an HDD-based RAID 0 G-Drive with Thunderbolt 3 that caps out at at least 500 MB/s. Essentially, SSDs are not really required at all, just an External HDD with Thunderbolt 3, or if you want to be sure to maximize efficiency, a RAID 0 HDD with TB3 or higher. So instead of spending $3500 on a 16 TB NVME Thunder Blade, I can spend $1100 on a 24 TB G-Raid setup to use as my working drive and not experience any downside in performance within LRC that would bottleneck my Mac Studio Ultra in any way.
    I appreciate all of your testing, as it is really helping me make the most optimized decisions I can both with the Mac Studio configuration, and now the hard drives!

    • @ArtIsRight
      @ArtIsRight  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Sensible. I like that! I would recommend a hybrid workflow with immediate work on SSD and storage on HDD. The reason why is not so much speed but latency. HDD need to make revolution to access your files. SSD just get to it right away. However, if you are running RAID then you should be good to go. Just some extra thought there but you are on the right track

    Awesome video, my new M1 Mac Mini should arrive at the store this week, I have configured it 16gb RAM with 1tb Storage. As a keen photographer I have my images stored at present on a LaCie rugged 2tb Thunderbolt 2 drive with a second 4tb USB-C drive as back-up, I want to update my external drive to SSD and had been looking at superfast SSD's to work with the Thunderbolt ports on the Mini but you indicate that I have clearly been heading in the wrong direction.
    So thanks for this video, I can now look at bigger SSD drives for less money than a small super quick/super expensive ultra SSD. I have dabbled with a small SSD (Sandisk Extreme Mk1 500gb) but my MBP from mid 2014 isn't great on modern connections and I don't really get any benefit from the SSD (at least I don't think that I do), I am also unhappy with the drive as it locks up and refuses to wake if the computer has gone to sleep so won't be getting another Sandisk, shame as their memory cards have always been good.
    Great video and well happy that I have found your channel. Thanks.

    Art - I would also like to point out that the newer SanDisk Extreme Pro 2000MB/s (as I found out form a recent purchase) can only attain this speed using a USB 3.2 Gen 2x2 interface. Macs do not have this interface nor is it backward compatible on the Thunderbolt interface, so very unwise for a Mac user to pay a premium for these. Art, this was very important for me, so thank you very much. I am still considering to change the Mac Pro 5.1 with the Studio. At the moment I have about 1.7 TB photos. I am using LightRoom. If I understand you right, it is better to have the photos on an external SSD and not spend to lot on an internal SSD. But should the LR Catalog be also on the external or rather on the internal SSD? At the moment I am now thinking to buy the M1 Max with 64 Gb Ram, but with only 1 TB SSD and rather buy bigger external SSDs.
    A side question: can the old Mac Pro 5.1 be used like a NAS or like another kind of server as a backup system? I do not know if the Pro will be easy to sell (here in Norway).

    • @ArtIsRight
      @ArtIsRight  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      You can choose to have the catalog in any location it won't effect performance much. I like the catalog on the SSD along with the images this way you are depend of your laptop, otherwise, you have 1/2 of the data on your SSD and the other 1/2 on your laptop. The machine that you want seems fine. As far as MP 5,1 for NAS or storage server you can do that but I don't recommend for a few reason, at the top being power consumption, those machines are power hungry just to keep running all the time. The SATA is really slow, you can get better speed with PCIE card but if you want fast backup then you want 10 GbE as well and that is another card. Personally if you want a NAS just get a NAS, either Synology or build one, better, newer hardware and you have the benefit of not maintaining macOS which is nice.

      True, but the cost that Apple charges is also exorbitant compared to external. It all comes down to workflow, budget, and convenient factor. Do you also do exports to the same external SSD? Is there a speed difference when exporting to JPEG to the internal SSD vs external SSD?
    Also do you have tests for how heat might slow down these external SSD drives? Do the more expensive drives do better in this regard?

      cache always on computer. no point moving them to external. Exporting to either speed are the same. Write speed is not the factor. Heat can slow down SSD but not for export, the write is extreme small and just a longer duration. This depends on the SSD as well.

      Here's the answer, which I think I understand your question correctly, if this does not answer the question, please restate the question in a reply. So any SSD for that matter will improve performance in LRC. reason why is that even though HDD might have speed that matches the sustained used in LRC, the thing with rotating platter and reading head as in HDD is that, there's a lot of latency. This is something that is reduced greatly in SSD. And as you can see in this video, you can get a faster SSD but there's really not that much benefit. Right now Samsung T7 is probably the one that would recommend as the main stream SSD. At 1000 MB/s Read Write, it is more than enough for any workflow.

    • @ArtIsRight

      Well not quite, the images has already been copied to the NVMe, so it is independent rather than dependent. Also workflow that download directly form memory card directly into editing program and rely on that program to perform the basic file coping function is flawed and can sometime leads to fatal error, worse yet, it extremely difficulty to track down where the error occurred because the program added complexity to what is really simple. Sure use CFexpress and download you'll get 1.5-1.7 GB/s based on the CFExpress spec but that is missing the point, no one should ever edit from those card and like I said before, copy function should be simplified to minimized errors. And no I was not using USH-I SD card, there no bottle neck in what I showed and the logical, reasoning and rationale demonstrated here is sound.

And it's worse for DDRAM-less type of storage (which is getting more and more dominante as a cost saving measure). It's depressing that some of us have to get the higher tier storage capacity to keep the original specs in check.
