I fell in love with this song as a kid. Loved it so much and quickly became a fan of Harry Belafonte. Sad to say he passed away today. 96. Rest in peace King of Calypso.
I love this song from my childhood ,but never listened to this sweetest original voice . I am lying in the hospital bed and listening this song again again to remove my pain for Lungs Fungus , asthma. Mt Elezabeth hospital in Singapore is so peaceful and swinging with is beautiful song I am connected to God it has Sublimed my spiritual soul , Chandana Sengupta
A beautiful man and talent. He became a true hero to me as I grew up, understanding his dedication to Humanity and Civil Rights. Thanks, Dad, for having his albums around.
I first heard this song as a child, on a remote station in PNG, on the radio. I never knew who sung it & or what it was called until after I had moved to Australia as a teenager. By then it had morphed from a dreamy beautiful song into a dreamy poignant bittersweet song because I too had to leave my family behind. Gives me all the feels. Thankyou for your music Harry that found me, many years ago by chance. Safe journeys on & never stop singing.
very first time I heard this was in high school my freshman year. what a long life he lived as a Singer, Civil Rights activist, and a humanitarian RIP Harry Belafonte
Lyrics Down the way where the nights are gay And the sun shines daily on the mountain top I took a trip on a sailing ship And when I reached Jamaica I made a stop But I'm sad to say I'm on my way Won't be back for many a day My heart is down, my head is turning around I had to leave a little girl in Kingston town Sounds of laughter everywhere And the dancing girls sway to and fro I must declare my heart is there Though I've been from Maine to Mexico But I'm sad to say I'm on my way Won't be back for many a day My heart is down, my head is turning around I had to leave a little girl in Kingston town Down the market you can hear Ladies cry out while on their heads they bear 'Akey' rice, salt fish are nice And the rum is fine any time of year But I'm sad to say I'm on my way Won't be back for many a day My heart is down, my head is turning around I had to leave a little girl in Kingston town Down the way where the nights are gay And the sun shines daily on the mountain top I took a trip on a sailing ship And when I reached Jamaica I made a stop But I'm sad to say I'm on my way Won't be back for many a day My heart is down, my head is turning around I had to leave a little girl in Kingston town Sad to say I'm on my way Won't be back for many a day My heart is down, my head is turning around I had to leave a little girl in Kingston town

Lyrics
Down the way where the nights are gay
And the sun shines daily on the mountain top
I took a trip on a sailing ship
And when I reached Jamaica I made a stop
But I'm sad to say I'm on my way
Won't be back for many a day
My heart is down, my head is turning around
I had to leave a little girl in Kingston town
Sounds of laughter everywhere
And the dancing girls sway to and fro
I must declare my heart is there
Though I've been from Maine to Mexico
But I'm sad to say I'm on my way
Won't be back for many a day
My heart is down, my head is turning around
I had to leave a little girl in Kingston town
Down the market you can hear
Ladies cry out while on their heads they bear
'Akey' rice, salt fish are nice
And the rum is fine any time of year
But I'm sad to say I'm on my way
Won't be back for many a day
My heart is down, my head is turning around
I had to leave a little girl in Kingston town
Down the way where the nights are gay
And the sun shines daily on the mountain top
I took a trip on a sailing ship
And when I reached Jamaica I made a stop
But I'm sad to say I'm on my way
Won't be back for many a day
My heart is down, my head is turning around
I had to leave a little girl in Kingston town
Sad to say I'm on my way
Won't be back for many a day
My heart is down, my head is turning around
I had to leave a little girl in Kingston town
