This mower was being used and then ran out of gas. It was then refilled with gas and then it was started and ran for just a few seconds and then died.
Never heard of diesel in a mower by mistake but good to be aware of it. Also LOL at your line "test of my patience in diagnosing it"
I couldn't believe it when I found it either.
As teenager I was appalled to discover one dark morning that I was both broke, and out of gas! I went into the shed, found a gas can, and added it to my tank. After school my truck wouldn't start. My parents were on a trip but returned that weekend. My dad told me that can had diesel in it. He had been using diesel to clean some equipment. We did the same thing you did here; drained the tank, added new gas, turned it over until is started and drove it until it stopped smoking! Thank you for sharing! Stay safe.

Thankfully it was diesel in gasoline engine, not the other way around

If anybody thinks that was a mistake by putting diesel in it, just look at that air filter and that ridiculous plug. Not to mention ignoring the oil blowing out of the muffler. That was major owner neglect or somebody who didn’t know the first thing about a lawnmower. That was a very informative video on not what to do.

I never seen diesel in a lawnmower but a few years ago me and my friend were on a road trip my friend needed some gas for his motorcycle and we stopped in a gas station in a small town and they never marked the pump for diesel he had an older bike and the bigger nozzle fit in his tank .He made it about a mile before it shut down . his bike was older and had a carburetor so it was simple to drain the tank. My Harley was fuel injected and if i put diesel in mine i would of had a very bad day . Just had to share that it brought back some memories

The grans and parents mower wouldn't start after it ran maybe a season with a new pump diaphragm I put in and I found that the tank was full of kerosene. Drained and refilled with gas and off it went. No diesel yet but time is still going on. Thanks and BLESSINGS!
This was very common in the 70s and 80s with Mercedes cars (where I worked for a while as a youngster) as service station attendants would often mistakenly think that all MB cars used Diesel fuel. Later, sometimes they began putting gasoline in Diesel cars which sometimes resulted in a rather costly repair.

@@HomeGaragechannel I did that once with a concrete truck after the station changed colors on the pump nozzles. Mechanic just poured in several quarts of ATF and said to run it. I did and no ill effects but it ran slightly lousy with the gas/ATF mix but was fine after straight diesel was put back in.

Yes I have seen this once. Also people put chain saw bar oil in the gas tanks and gas in the bar oil tank. Donyboy 73 just did a video on this. Suggestion: I have seen the glow spark testers work on a weak spark but the coil is weak or bad. I use the spark gap tester and have had better luck. As always thanks for a great video.

I have never heard of someone having a container for diesel. I do not have one of those compression testers but it looked to me that it was at 70psi at 3:44. Have good days!

I've never seen this personally, used to see folks putting a full 5L of oil in their vehicle when the oil light came on... a lot more often than you'd think. 😂 Another great way to make some smoke.

This is the first time I heard someone used the wrong fuel for their equipment. Probably it was an honest mistake🤷♂️🤷♂️. My question to you is did you try the sparkplug that came with the mower to see if it actually worked just out of curiosity tho.

@@ramadinsookhoo6141 When that plug was pulled out I thought the gap was closed completely from being hit by the piston and feared the piston might have a hole in it. 75psi told me it didn't have a hole, but I bet you are correct about damage. Might be interesting to scope it?
I put a new engine in my step dads 2yr old craftsman chainsaw over the summer cause he accidentally put regular gas in it and the piston seized in the cylinder. New factory engine was $74 shipped.

I actually had an old Ginge mower, were the owners had accidentally poured diesel in the tank. I cleaned it, ran it til it stopped smoking, and worked perfect afterwards.

I bought a mower with that exact same engine a few months ago, guy said it wouldn't start and had an oil leak after lending it his neighbour. Oil was dripping from the exhaust, the crank case had been filled with petrol, but luckily it wouldn't start. Changed the oil, primed it and it would run for a second and stop.
Cleaned the carb twice, still the same, changed the diaphragm, still the same. It also had a full tank of petrol, emptied it, looked good, put fresh in and it runs great.

Deffinatly think Pauline pro equipment is okay, as long as it gets the job done right. That blower on the other hand, idk man, now i got some amazing. News, back when i was in the th grade, i was working on a leaf vacuumed, well i finished it but i unfortunately covid happened, but before covid, the ninth prior in February, i put a new rope on it to turn the engine over, and then we had to replace the handle to the front of the machine to where you could suck out flower beds, and we also put fresh oil in it, its a craftsman yard vacuumed with a 6.5 HP engine. And i proved it ran, and then we had to leave and for a year and. A half it sat in the auto shop. So the vice principle who owned it, said i can have it, he said he had no use for it so he said i an have it. You have no idea how happy i was to get it, so this Wednesday before we go on thanksgiving break, i will be taking it home.

Where I live we have a large baseball softball and soccer field for the kids to join and play sports. Everything is done by volunteers.
My brother-in-law has been in charge of this for 15 plus years. He asked me could I come up to the field and look at their gator that day has. I got up there and he was explaining how it won't stay running it keeps on shutting itself down and if they have to pay to fix or replace it that was less money for the programs.
After 3 days of working on this thing on 100 plus degree Days I had tried everything. Finally I drained all the fuel out and the gas just did not look right. So I ran home grabbed my IV bottle put my own gas in it and it ran back to the field and hooked it up to the carburetor. After if you tries it started running and smoking really bad. With the IV bottle in one hand the other hand on the wheel I drove around the entire field until the smoke stopped coming out.
When I was telling everybody at the field that it was working that there was something wrong with the gas one of the volunteers said that when he was filling it up that the gas smelled funny. My brother-in-law asked him what gas can did you use he said the one next to the tractor. Only problem was the tractor was diesel. I could not believe that someone could do that especially since everything was marked gas and Diesel.
After that incident they ended up having to lock the diesel container and tractor in a different shed and only certain people were allowed to have access to it.
I was just glad that I was able to fix it.

I’d run that for 5-10 mins and get it hot and then drain that new oil and replace it with some fresh stuff. But em em the new oil that is now in there will come out filthy

My wife's nephew came to visit us and wanted to mow the lawn. He ran out of gas and put diesel into our new Honda riding mower. When it started smoking it scared the crape out of him. But I got lucky all I did was drain the tank and clean out the fuel system. It ran fine after that. But he never offered to mow again. LOL

so I've heard.
I had an older farmer customer with his mower with a no-start condition. Got to pulling the spark plug and there was a very strange liquid on the end of it that I hadn't seen before, wasn't water that was for sure. Smelled it and sure enough, diesel. The fuel tank itself didn't smell too much of diesel so I think it was a similar situation to yours, it contaminated it enough to cause problems.
The customer was unable to believe he had put diesel in it, I just told him to check all his fuel cans for cross-contamination.

A lot of the old 2 stroke motorcycles I’ve redone long ago I actually found motor oil in the 2 cycle oil tank, I think in the early owners manual said in a emergency it could be done but the motor suffered. I miss having a 2 stroke street bike 😵💫😞

I had someone put kerosene in their mower because it was in a regular gas can. That's why you store them in their designated color container. Blue for kerosene, red for gas and yellow for diesel.

Had a brand new Generac gas powered water pump come in a few months ago that won't start for the customer. Customer claimed he assembled it out of the box and filled it up with fresh fuel and nothing. Similar situation as with your mower - lower psi (decompression valve), pull over easily and had a strong spark but no start. Dribbled gas into carb and it fired right up so fuel issue. Emptied tank and found that the customer inadvertently filled it up with kerosene. Apparently grabbed the wrong fuel can. It happens.......

Had a Troybilt mower come in here last summer filled with 2 stroke fuel. My sister once filled her Ford Windstar minivan with diesel, fortunately she realized it before she tried to start it so the fuel system didn’t have to be flushed. I’ll bet that happens a lot.
I completely agree with you, I'd like to ask a mechanic and see how many times they've had to flush a fuel system for that very reason.
I never myself of putting diesel in a mower. And let alone the oil being drained like in clumps but those classic l head engine were tough engines and easy to work on.

I once had a customer who brought in a John Deere push mower and it had the same problem. Somehow it did start, but the engine wouldn’t get up to speed. I actually do wish there was such thing as a diesel push mower, but the closest thing to it is a John Deere lawn tractor

Back when vehicles weren't so computerized there was a condition when your motor would clatter and you could put a gallon or two of diesel in your tank with your gas. Drive it like you stole it and the noise would be gone.

There was a whole laundry list of stuff that was wrong with that engine beginning with the wrong spark plug that should have damaged the engine. Who lets their air filter get that plugged??? Who doesn't ever change his oil??? The lawnmower owner should get his man-card revoked!!!

A customer put diesel in their car and brought it in for a no start. Drained the tank and flushed out the lines. Boy did the car smoke bad for a while.

Donyboy73 (Don Desjardins) had to sort out a customers chainsaw where they filled the fuel tank up with be chain & bar oil just recently.
I mentioned.before that 75 PSI is good for a 3-3.5 horsepower Briggs and Stratton L (flat) head engine because they run a very low 6:1 compression ratio,it doesn't have a compression release mechanism like the 4+horsepower Briggs and Stratton L head engines do.
They don't release official compression figures for the L head engine for that reason rather tell you to perform a cylinder leakdown test on the engine.
Mine was beginning to foul the spark plug up.until I rebuilt it about 2 years ago, it's been going great since !

My mom put kerosene into our Craftsman riding mower. Dad wasn't too happy about having to get it out of the tank, line, fuel pump, and carb. LOL

Minimum compression needed for an engine to run is 50PSI however most engines won't run below 60PSI, at my shop if an engine without an ACR (automatic compression release) has less than 65 PSI i won't bother fixing it, now an engine with an ACR will have no higher than 40-60PSI, Briggs states on engines with an ACR to use a cylinder leakdown tester and not a compression tester.

I accidentally put kerosene in my mower one time. I had kerosene in the same type of tank that I kept my gas in. Needless to say, it would not run. It took me a while to figure out the problem. MIT wasn’t until I smelled the gas that I knew what the problem was. I drained it from the tank and the carburetor bowl, filled it with gas and it cranked right up. The one benefit was the kerosene e cleaned the fuel system out, but it cause no other problems.

I do believe this is the least-cared for and least-understood Briggs & Stratton "L-head" engine on average in modern history.

I had a similar situation where someone had put a lot of oil in the gas tank with the gas. Not sure if they might have thought that's where it was supposed to go or what. The engine tried to start but it immediately fouled the plug and stopped, And when it was briefly running it smoked like crazy!

Normal e10 fuel gets stale after just a few months. When i get a mower in for anything first thing i do is change plug, gas, check är filter and control the Blade adapter. All this before even trying to start it.

That's what I said cause of the different color of cans meaning different fuel types but only if you as the user follow the color code as not to get confused what is in what can about the only two fuels I put in red cans is regular gas and 2 stroke mixed gas and usually mark it with a sharpie if needed
I actually purchased one that the seller said their son put diesel in it I flushed it out it worked fine sold for good profit

Only time I've ever heard of a situation where diesel was accidentally put in where gas should be was one time my brother did this on a trip we took to California when we were kids with our parents and dad let him pump but he put diesel in the tank instead of gas. Needless to say it and thankfully my dad was an auto mechanic and it was caught early and fixed by my dad before any damage could be done.
Also I would like to ask why it is that you never show the one possibility that the engine break cable could be a potential problem keeping the mower from starting.

I think have shown the brake cable was a problem once before but it was in an older video
If the cable was broken, you wouldn't be able to pull the cord fast enough to start the engine, if you could pull it at all, because the engine brake (not break) would be applied and prevent the flywheel from turning.

Why didn't you drain the oil with the drain plug? The really dirty sludge would be at the bottom of the engine.

Yes I have my Dad accidently put diesel into his honda tiller once. It had some gas in the tank so it ran for a little while then stopped and wouldn't start I had to end up rebuilding the carb to get it to run again. lol

Hard to believe that you couldn't smell the raw diesel fuel fumes coming from the tank and fuel as you drained it. Was the crankcase breather clogged preventing the oil from draining quickly? The oil actually appeared to be diluted in the video. I would have run that engine for a while to get it good and warm and then drained the new oil out and changed it again. Did you have a new air filter in stock or did you clean the old one out with the diesel fuel from the tank?
Yes for some reason, it didn't smell as strong as normal diesel, I could only guess that there was still some gasoline in the mower's tank when they added diesel to it.
When my sister got her first car she filled up with regular but it requires mid grade and she didnt know why it was rattling, I asked her what she put in the tank and said the regular gas with the lower number and it started rattling, I go😑 just diluted the tank with some octane booster.

I haven't heard of that because of the colored cans relating to different fuel types I don't remember all of them but red is regular gas and yellow should be diesel, blue kerosene... green I think is oil not sure someone else that knows more feel free to let us know down below , but as for mistaking fuel type it must have been in the wrong color can or the owner doesn't know the color coding for fuel types which is possible

A buddy of mine had a Ford 6700 tractor that wouldn’t start.. he ended up ripping the entire fuelsystem apart and the head before he found out that his dad had filled it up with gas 🤦🏻♂️

So as i stored my yard machine 31A-3BAD729 snow blower in the shed, stupidly with gas in the tank + No fuel shut off. So all summer long, I would pull it out and run it for 5 minutes every couple of weeks just to keep the gas “fresh” in the carb. Around late September, I noticed fuel leaking when I primed it. I’m assuming fuel has rotted the fuel line to the point it’s cracked and is leaking. I’m assuming it’s the fuel line. The unit is 18+ years old, and not quite sure if it’s worth fixing. I could make a video when family is gone from thanksgiving. Luckily, I’m in no rush in fixing it since I have a slightly larger one. If you have a video somewhere or could find one of replacing the fuel line or where I could see the fuel line just so I could see what’s going on. I have absolutely no idea what I’m doing, nor do I know what’s wrong with it.
If I can find one, I'll make a video about it.

Question if someone put two Stoke fuel in a 4 Stoke mower and ran if for a long time is a hard process to clear it out two make it run again
Actually there's not a problem using 2 stroke fuel in the 4 stroke, there might be a light smoke, but the extra oil, shouldn't hurt the engine. How Ever, a long storage period would effect the 4 stroke more.
