This video is meant as entertainment, always practice safety.
That shows me that I can take care of my equipment. If I have my own tools, I can repair my own equipment. If I have a repair that is hard for me to do or I can’t do properly like adjusting the valves on a Stihl FS-91R, then I can take it to a dealer and let them adjust the valves. But when it comes to the carb, cleaning it, and taking care of it, I can do it unlike some people who make me look smart by doing the repair instead of neglecting it.

Even though small engine repair is my main form of money, i do agree either people do not understand how to winterize their equipment or life is too busy to worry about this issue but i have told this to my customers all the time and some get it , some don't.
I know right, it's hit or miss, but mainly miss.
When I do work for other people right now, I am not really concerned about making money. I enjoy gaining more experience and helping the people I care about. I haven't worked on a lot of stuff for people I do not know, though I am planning to start advertising next spring once I sell some machines and clear a little bit of my project queue, and decrease my lawn art collection.
if you do, get ready to find out why working for other people, even if they're customers, is a real pain.
I must admit i never drain mine either and i service and repair these for a living. It usually gets put away and forgotten about for the winter and i always tell my customers to drain fuel over winter. A case of do as i say not as i do.
I myself use ethanol-free gas so it doesn't really become a problem for me.

@@Lagggerengineering I just drain it in spring and put fresh fuel in and 9 times out of 10 it starts right up. It is a honda around 15 years old never lets me down.
After teaching high school for 23 years nothing, absolutely nothing surprises me. Just consider repeat customers as job security.

I have had my fair share also . My own brother in law bought a riding mower for $150 (non running) and I asked him why and his words were well u can get it going for me that's why 🤦♂️

Its the EXACT SAME THING in the realm of computer maintenance. The EXACT same!
Takes all kinds I suppose BUT I have a piece of paper right in front of me that I got the saying somewhere that says,' NEVER underestimate the STUPIDITY of the average person' and another that says that all people REALLY want is their bread and circuses. I gave up working on everybody's stuff when I couldn't do it anymore. They'll just have to take it to the ACE and pay through the nose to get it fixed. I have enough to do with our stuff to keep it going so we can get inside without having to set a backfire or rent a trackhoe. The ones that REALLY got me were the ones that brought something to get fixed but then would tell you what was wrong and how you needed to fix it. They took their stuff back with them when they left which wasn't too much later. Time is time and it only comes once. BLESSINGS!

I like working on small engines especially 2 stroke it takes my mind off stuff I worked on other peoples engines for a while for free and would explain to them how to keep it in working condition to help them out and I injoyed doing it but the same people would come back and same problems or worse so it just turned into free work for me , I only work on my own equipment now and waiting for the day I find that husky in the trash pile lol people just don't appreciate kindness these days.

I completely agree with everything you've said. I have a neighbor that just will not listen to a word I say. She constantly leaves it uncovered in the rain and never not once ran it dry.. When I said something to her, she replied with I used canned fuel, which was a bold face 🤥🤥 What she didn't know was I watched her put gas in it at during the last couple cuts of the season. Because of her being dishonest, I refused to fix her mower. One thing I don't like or tolerate is lying.. I really enjoy when you do these types of videos. Thank for for your awesome content

yes it's for your garden hose to clean the underside of the deck.
those customers with the "oh i forgot" problem WILL BE CHARGED the advanced repair charge, compared to those who try hard to keep up with there yearly required up keep. not that the other people will give a damm, but it will make up for all the extra time and attention i have to give to said equipment to do a proper fix. like you said.. if they think its to much to pay hit the door jack this is my side job done only as per fun for me.. and yes a sign i seen awhile back said " I RESERVE THE RIGHT TO REFUSE SERVICE TO ANY ONE AT ANY TIME FOR ANY REASON!!!

Near the end of the season in October I start to use engineered fuel only. Springtime startups always easy it's worth the extra money.👽

If they dont want to change their habits then that is more money for us. I will give my recommendations and then its on them. It makes it easy to work on their equipment because you know what to expect.

I just did some little work on my yard machines push mower that I had gotten off of the curb I took it home and cleaned the carb and I wanna do my first oil change on it and I can’t really find anything helpful online I was wondering what oil you would recommend for a 6.50 hp 190cc Briggs and Stratton engine . Thanks
because it's winter, I would use 10w-30 motor oil.
IF you really care to, you can also use 10w-30 for air cooled engines.
IF it was summer time though, I would use just 30 weight oil .

A good way to tell what kind of person they are as far as maintenance, is to ask them if they change their own oil in their car. Almost always, the ones that don't do their own oil changes won't maintain their lawn equipment. Their car will always come first. To some people, lawn equipment are like second class citizens. Abuse and neglect is what they get.

I don't change the oil in my car because it's ILLEGAL and if I get caught doing it, I have to pay a huge fine.
I had one customer who would never do what he was told. I fixed his mower 3 years in a row and I think he bought an electric mower now. If you are doing extra maintenance like cleaning, blade sharpening and oil changes you have to charge for it.

I still remember like it was yesterday when i 1st started working on small engines. My riding mower and chainsaws get used year round never have to worry about bad gas setting in the tank or carburetor but with my weed eater or push mower i run them till they run out gas
nice, it think it's best that way. Ideally I would run it periodically instead but most don't need to .
Some people are just irresponsible & you're the one taking responsibility for their equipment

I am hoping I can turn my hobby into somewhat of a living eventually, so that I will not have to work full time. I have multiple disabilities, and I am not going to be able to work full time at my current job for much longer.

People just have too much money, it´s as simple as that. If they wouldn´t, many of them would probably take better care of their stuff. Just do your work as neat and as carefully as you alway do, but charge them appropriately for it.

What I run into every year, I have 2 to 3 customers who have the same problem every year, just just don't understand ethnol in the gas, and then they blame me, and want it fixed for free, cause I didn't do it right last year, so same speal every year, and explained it's the ethnol, not my work, I say once fixed last year, did it start, and run all summer long, to which they say yes, so how could be my fault, to which they say you're right, can you fix it again, and I say yes, same customers, same complaint, you would think they would learn right, nope.

Couldn't agree more. I see the same thing as you all the time. Problem is, we mechanics care more about the equipment than most customers do. I have one guy that runs a Honda GX 160 in a very dirty enviroment and I get it when it won't run any longer. Air filter is plugged, oil is so bad it comes out as sludge. I keep telling him the engine has no oil filter and to change it every month as he runs it every day. You are correct, says he does not have time to do it and it becomes my problem. One day it will not have enough compression to start. End of story. Thanks for the video.

@@HomeGaragechannel They use it in a barn for various purposes. Thanks The Amish community is a good 50% of my business. They use engines for mills, washing machines, water pumps, on cement mixers, saws etc.

I cherry pick my jobs when working from home. I get one nasty comment from a customer I don't fix it. I just tell em to pick it up

I would definitely take a bunch of customers who pleasantly doesn’t care about bringing in their neglected equipment every year; never complaining about the price over one customer who is demanding, unreasonable, hot headed, and who thinks everyone is out to take advantage of them any day of the week! Funny thing about those customers is that they are fine with yelling and complaining about everything but always come right back the next time they need something! I, on the other hand, have no trouble refusing work from them and firmly suggesting they pound rocks!

thanks, it's the only degreaser they have a Harbor Freight. The price is really good even consider it's a gallon jug.
Man I need to do this to my mower now, what's did you use in that spray bottle to clean it? also any chance you can link the carburetor? and my self-propeller doesn't work I cleared out the area along with replacing the pull cable but the wheels still don't move (I see a small amount of moving but not enough to make a difference)
I'm using a degreaser from Harbor Freight, and yes I'll link the carb. As for the self propel have you taken one of the wheels off to look at the teeth?
Also if you’re getting paid why bother you already know what’s wrong with it. That seems like a win win. Your customers are doing planned obsolescence all on their own.

It is like going to the dentist - Some will clean their teeth, others won't, all you can do is explain the benefits of maintenance and the pain/expense/inconvenience of not doing it regularly. Also charging more over time to the customers that don't do it regularly is common.

Man I’m 14 and I have a 2009 toro super recycler sr4 and I love fixing mowers. I mow lawns and I fix my lawnmower the most because I use it most but it’s fun. I’m not good at it but I can turn a wrench. I can do stuff like look at something and be able to see that part is either bad or needs attention. It’s fun just tinkering around with old mowers and small engines. I love your videos and I have learned a lot from them and some have helped me this year to get my mower in running condition. It needs a head gasket and some more parts like the self propel belt and new wheels because the ones on it now are starting to crack. I love riders too but I don’t have one lol keep doin what you are doing man your videos help out so many people

How do you get your machines to clean up so well? I used the same product on a machine of mine, and it did not clean up nearly as well. I was also using a pressure washer. Do you use it full strength, or do you dilute it? How long do you leave it on?
I have to wear some eye protection but I use it at full strength. Scrub when needed and you'll need to be extra watchful over the time it sits on metal and paint.
@@HomeGaragechannel I diluted it to about 50/50 since it is so corrosive now. That's why it didn't work as well. I have a 16 year old riding mower that is staying in the permanent fleet, but it has never been washed before, so there is 16 years worth of grease, dirt, and grime on it.

I have an almost identical model to the Craftsman in your video. I am preparing to fix it. The self-propell wants to engage but doesn't. I am wondering if it's the belt jumping or have the spikes on those front wheels worn out. Also, it doesn't like to restart when warm. Any suggestions?
I would check to make sure if the choke, is working "Too well" and flooding the engine.
When hot, and it won't start, put someone "small and light" in the flap for the choke and see if that's enough to keep from flooding it. As for the self propel, hopefully it's not the transmission.

@@slipperyblueclay2521 Pull the front wheel(s) off and check the gear teeth in the inside of the wheel itself and then do like the teacher does and lube up the inside of the metal drive gear.
Yep, happens every year. I don’t know why I thought the customer would listen to me and run all of the gas out before storing it away. I still tell them every time I sell or service a mower though.
