Hey guys, I just bought a 09 Cobalt from an auto auction with only 104K miles on it. As is in most auctions, you could look at it and start it, but you couldn't drive it before you bought it. Anyways after driving out of the auction yard, I got the dreaded "Power Steering" message on the dash, hard transmission shifting and no speedometer. I got the car home and started researching online what the problem could be. I ran across the videos of there "fixes" and was very excited. I tried it out and it did not help at all. I tried over and over with a wire brush, thinking that I just was not getting a good ground. Nothing helped. I got discouraged and did more research and found videos showing a problem with communication between the modules. I purchased a scanner from Walmart for $50, not just a code reader an actual scanner that used bluetooth to my phone to display all the real time data from the engine and components.
The data said that I was not getting a signal from the output speed sensor on the transmission. After finding this (bottom of the engine on the back side by the firewall on the passenger side) I replaced the sensor as it was easy to get to from underneath the car and inexpensive ($20). After replacing the sensor I started and tried out the car with high hopes.... Nope, still malfunctioning. I scanned the car again and received the excact same data. I tried unsuccessfully to find a wiring diagram to see where the wires go that come from the sensor so I could test them to ensure they didn't have a short in them. Since I couldn't find anything online, I went outside to trace them (34 degrees outside). As I was tracing them, I noticed the plastic covering almost looked melted and very brittle. I saw a spot with a hole through it and didn't see any wires in there. Upon examining it closer, both wires (purple and yellow) were completely broken. I replaced the wires and hooked everything back up. I felt good about the fix so I tried it out, bingo !!! The car operated normally (for the first time).
I wanted to see if I needed the "fix" ground wire to the TCM. I disconnected it and the car still runs perfect. So, If you try this "fix" and it does not work for you, checking the wiring on the Transmission Output Speed Sensor would be a good idea. Wanted to share my experience so that hopefully it can help someone else as it was a two week nightmare thinking I wasted $1900 on a piece of junk.

There is a place on the oil filter housing that has a sharp edge. It easily cuts through the sheathing and sometimes the wires. This can cause a variety of problems.

Thanks so very much for this tutorial. I was at my wits end trying to figure out what the problem was. I watched videos upon videos and gave each solution a try. After replacing Throttle Body, Spark Plugs, and Speed Sensor, I started getting different codes on the my code reader. That's when I changed tactics. There's a short somewhere and I just had to find it. Luckily, it was the wiring to the Speed Sensor. Got those two patched up and did the TCM ground mod. After resetting the computer and all, the car is running fine with no issues at all. BEFORE ATTEMPTING TO DO ANYTHING WITH THE ELECTRONICS IN YOUR VEHICLE, MAKE SURE TO DISCONNECT THE BATTERY FIRST. Yes I know, most people already knows this. This is for those that tend to forget. Yes, I were one of those people. Hope this helps anyone with the same issue that I've had.

This fix only cost me $6.18 04/18/2022. I didnt use the loop on both sides of the screw as it seemed redundant, however I used the 1/4 inch bolt and wire connector and attached it to the strut. BAM!! worked like a charm, I can't thank you enough for sharing this video. The car is running perfectly.

Thanks for the post man! Just did this last week and just drove the car again today and it's still going good like back to normal. It started two weeks ago with my 07' Cobalt ironically when I was on the way to my mechanic to get something else done. I had him put in a new battery hoping it might help after things I've read online but he couldn't figure out what the problem was and he could only tell me it was a communication problem with the tcm. When I picked the car up the next day I drove it home about 3 miles and it was fine no issues. The next day I drove it and power steering message came up gauges going crazy and bad shifting and check engine light on. Anyhow this is working so far. Thank god! My question is how long has this fix worked for you or anyone else? Has it been a permanent fix? Thanks again!

  • @jimmyb2480

I did this fix works great, but I would like to add there is a ground wire connection on the drivers side of the back of the engine it has about 4 to 5 ground wires going into a terminal and it gets corroded and even burns the wires and melts the plastic coating on the wires and doesn't make a good connection, remove the wires from the terminal clean them up and maybe even replace the terminal and it will make a better ground.

every transmission on the planet has this is called limp mode. More than likely the fluid hasnt been changed and the filter is clogged if you look on here there are a ton of videos explaining just that. If the fluid is at its proper level and is clean than could be the pressure solenoid. Anythine a car has issues all the fluids should be cked if they are low fill them dirty change them. Than ck all fuses and electrical connections doesnt cost anything to ck. Half the cars issues can be prevented by doing this prevented maintenance.

FOR THE PPL THIS DOESN'T WORK FOR. My mother bought a cobalt had the same issues I added a Ground and still had a communication tcm issue! We sent the car to a bunch of shops and got crazy quotes and crazy diagnosis finally we sent it to a place that specializes in electronic stuff like radios and remote starters they even wire the local police cars. Anyway they had to add one of the positive feed wires that are on the tcm they charged us 75$ to fix it and it solved all these problems I'm not sure what wires but if anyone has questions message me i can send pics of what they did. THEY DID ALSO ADD A GROUND LIKE THIS.

Vickie Lecker I just ran into TCM problems today after replacing an exhaust gasket, the donut gasket as my friend referred to it. it was the one right off the heads, three bolts holding the exhaust in place. While wrenching on one of the lower bolts closest to the passenger side I was really close to some wiring dropping down the back of the motor which plugs into the transmission, two wires yellow and purple color. My Cobalt now has 120k miles and I live in Phoenix, Arizona so it gets hot under the hood. The cover for these two wires was so dried out that it had fallen apart. These two wires in my case are now exposed to the heat and have become very brittle. I noticed tonight after driving the car didn't want to shift, power steering message, and all trip info and avg mpg and avg mph now blank. Inspecting these two wires since that was the only thing I had unplugged, one wire has split and I can now see exposed copper. I plan on repairing the damaged portion of the wires for now as a temporary fix, disconnecting the battery and reconnecting the battery to reset the computer which will bring back my trips, avg mpg, avg mph and hopefully replacing these wires will get my speedometer working again. After straightening the wire where it had cracked and making a connection the car did shift out of 1st into 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and 5th but the shift was very hard and I was greeted with the power steering message as soon as it shifted out of 1st into 2nd for the first time.
I suggest looking into these two wires on your daughter's Cobalt which may be causing a short. It sounds like you said you were able to use the original TCM by trying this "fix" shown in this video. I believe replacing these two wires will solve the problem without having to "Mickey Mouse" the car with what seems to me a dodgy fix.

Good video! My wife called me this morning and described the problem she was having after just leaving. The cruise dropped out and messages were flashing for steering problems etc. Shifting didn't seem to be affected. She has a 2006 Malibu Maxx. I told her to turn around and head home. I cleaned the ground terminals by the strut tower and on the frame in front of the battery and sprayed them with battery terminal protection. It road tested great so I sent her on her way. I'll ground the BCM when she gets back. But, I got a good continuity reading so I'm pretty confident it was the bad ground on the strut tower.

tracker fiend engine light will reset itself manually after I believe something like 140 drive cycles.. Depending on the code it set. That's starting the car from cold, letting it reach operating temp, then shutting off... You're better off going to autozone or disconnecting the battery. You could also just pull the fuses for thirty seconds if you don't want to get dirty

    MYSTERY %$#&**%$ SOLVED!!
Cobalt owners with following symptoms: while driving, the dreaded “ding ding” sound followed by security light coming on dash, gauges go wonky (speedo, fuel and rpms bounce to zero and back) Power Steering light may come on, sometimes jerky auto transmission shifting, sometimes loss of Power Steering and/or car going into Limp Mode.
My daughter has had her 2008 Cobalt Coupe for less than a year, we bought it used with about 110K miles on it. I have been troubleshooting trying to fix this issue since around the time she got it, like many of you, to no avail. I have spent hours researching on the internet (thank you to all of you Cobalt Warriors who have been hounding this too, with all your great info) as well as inspecting, cleaning contacts, looking for possible reasons for an electrical short - as many have found the fault codes almost always show loss of communication codes, but are unable to find the problem.
This may not be the only reason this happens, but I’m fairly certain this is why it was happening to my daughter’s car. Please check the following on your car to see if it has the same thing:
    1) Inspect Oil Pressure Sending Unit for oily residue on outside (I know, you’re saying “what? why?”)
    2) Inspect Connectors to modules, lower PCM especially, but TCM and upper PCM too, for any brownish oil residue on connectors or on the modules themselves - where pins are and around inside edges of modules, right where the connectors attach.
I believe what is happening, and bear with me…is that the Engine Oil Pressure Sensor begins to leak (fail)…and then oil from your engine is expelled under very light pressure out the Engine Oil Pressure Sensor …where it doesn’t fall below by gravity like you would expect…it travels like an alien species along the sensor wire and wire harness, even uphill, and around harness bends, until it makes its way to the module…in my case, the PCM. I believe it is the oil in the connectors making contact with the pins or the module itself to create an intermittent and temporary short, which makes you experience all the crazy Cobalt symptoms described above.
I finally came across the solution after Googling “oil in PCM”, and found other people who found oil in their PCM…These cars were not Cobalts or even GM cars, which one would normally discount as not being applicable. But if you read their threads below, you will see that they maintain that oil can travel from a leaking Engine Oil Pressure Sensor or a leaking Power Steering sensor, along harness wires to reach the PCM…they have similar experiences with the their cars’ gauges going haywire and transmissions not working correctly. See these threads:
Dodge Neon: Read Moderator Chris Barrett’s solution (he also noted it usually happens with weather proof (sealed) connectors..Maybe it is the suction created by the end connector seal to cause the oil to run along the wire:

Dodge Durango: read Getpaidct solution (albeit due to Power Steering sensor, but must use same technology):
    dodgeforum.com/forum/2nd-gen-neon/299939-oil-liquid-in-pcm-connector.html
Note: If your Engine Oil Pressure Sensor looks suspect and is oily, you may not yet notice any oil in the PCM module, connector area…I didn’t the first time I inspected it…I originally cleaned the connector and module/pins with CRC electrical contact cleaner spray, which seemed to help the problem go away for a few months. But the second time I inspected the connection, there was oil in there…I couldn’t figure out how oil was getting in there, as the contact spray should have completely evaporated, and it was just a wire harness ending with a plastic connector (with female connectors for pins) and the module, which was sealed in aluminum, with just copper pins sticking out of the module.
TO FIX: disconnect positive and negative battery terminals. Replace leaking Engine Oil Pressure Sensor, located on the engine block, down low, facing the right center of the front bumper (car needs to be raised to gain access from below) . Remove PCM and TCM module connectors. Remove outer black plastic cover of connectors. Generously spray harness wires near connector and both sides of connectors, where wires go into connector and the outer female leads with Isopropyl alcohol, something to cut through and clean off the oil. Use compressed air to blow out any remaining alcohol from both sides of the connector. Also clean pins and connector area on modules the same way. When confident everything is completely dry, re-attach connectors to modules. Before connecting battery, touch both negative and positive battery leads together for at least 15 seconds, to clear any residual stored codes. Re-attach positive battery lead, then negative lead. Hopefully your Cobalt electric gremlin has been exorcised forever, like mine!
If this is not the answer for your Cobalt troubles, check for possible wire breaks on the G105 ground bolted on the outer transmission, which is located on the top side of the transmission facing the front bumper. There was a moderator on CarGurus who found a stress break on his G105 grounded wires, which was causing the same symptoms and was resolved when the grounded wires were fixed appropriately. The picture of his ground did not include a larger ground strap, which my daughter’s car had, that looks original. My guess is that GM added the extra strap to the 2008 model, after finding the weakness or stress failure of the ground in the 2007 and earlier models. Some Cobalt owners have said their troubles were fixed after the dealer found a break in a wire underneath the car, and I’m guessing this is where it was, as I was not able to find any other possible wires to check, outside of the wires going through the firewall to the engine compartment.
Also, one of the first things I did, and still have, was to ground the TCM to the car body left strut, like many people have recommended, although it didn’t solve my problems like it did for others. My daughter’s car also had the ignition recall fix, the power steering motor recall fix, and then we had the Power Steering module/column replaced, which the dealer said was the problem for all the above symptoms, but it fixed it for only a few days before returning. I spent a good 4 hours troubleshooting after it started acting up again and I finally got this solution!!

Thanks for both your previous video and this one. Since I'm not sure which control module is the source of my problem, I doubled down and grounded both control modules in that area to the chassis ground. More precisely, I connected the TCM to the ECM and the ECM to the chassis ground. It started and no codes; haven't driven it yet to see if the problem goes away (or if I made things worse). Stupid Cobalt...

    • @mikeolson6843
      @mikeolson6843 7 ปีที่แล้ว

It's always a good precaution to unhook the battery ground when working on the electrical circuits. I always make sure I ground control modules and the like with a wire and alligator clips so that you minimize the risk of a surge when working on them. The fact that you saw sparks is proof that your module was poorly grounded. You don't need to tap the hole. A through hole will do the job. I would drill a 17/64th " through hole and use a lock washer. Poor grounding is the cause of a lot of intermittent problems. Surges are also the cause of a lot of control circuits getting damaged.

I'm having the same problem on my 2010 cobalt. Only stays in first gear speedometer not working and power steering on dash lit up. I tried the grounding but I guess I was too late and my module went out for good. I took it to my mechanic and he said I did what he would have tried first which was what's in this video. Long story short gonna have to replace it but he did mention he could have it sent off and have it fixed. A new one isn't too expensive but part store said dealership would have to program it. My question is is that if you bought one used does it still need programmed? Are each one programmed to individual vehicles or is it that they just program them for Cobalts, Cruz etc because of different transmissions maybe. I'm thinking of just buying one used if I don't need it programmed to my car. Its Sunday btw so my mechanic is not in and need car fixed this week. Thanks and this guy is right on with the grounding it.

GrizzyMode you didn't do a good job. Try again. Don't ground it to a painted surface. Tighten your bolts. Scrub the point you're grounding it to with steel wool, chore boy, steel "toothbrush," something. Use a little degreaser and make sure the spot you're mounting onto the tcm isn't all full of dirt.

  • @eddiereichel9354
    @eddiereichel9354 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Would it not be easier to find the broken ground wire? There is not a car in the world that needs any wires "added" for factory parts to work. What you need to do to repair this is get a wiring diagram. Figure out what wires run into the PCM that are ground. THere shoudl be 3-6 (or more) individual ground wires. One of them is messed up. To find what wire it is disconnect the connector (or connectors) that have the grounds. Use a test light (with the aligator clip going to battery + and verify that each ground wire is nice and bright. THen you use a higher amperage light. I prefer to use a headlight bulb and socket. Then use the headlight bulb as a test light and do the test again. If the light is dim on one wire then you have found your problem. There is no need to add any wires for a stock car.

Hey man, don't suppose I could trouble you to tell me what part number your TCM is? Should be on a white sticker on the back side, opposite side of the connectors.
I have a Pontiac solstice that is having pretty much the exact same issues. I know it's the same engine, I'm just not sure if the transmission/TCM is the same.
For reference the TCM is 24239377 (labeled on TCM) / 24239785 (part number)
    That is for 2007-2010
    Pontiac solstice/gxp
    Saturn sky/red line
    Cadillac srx/sts
Of course I'm going to just try this out anyway regardless if you reply or not, and if it works I'll come back and edit. If I don't edit this post, then anyone who found this video like I did can assume it didn't work for the TCM I listed

I have a 09 cobalt, Lt, what I think is a transmission problem because it has a hard time going into first, slams into 2nd. I even have carsheild, I brought it to a shop they "did" a diagnostic test and told me the tranny came back with 37 different codes, then tried telling me it's not my tranny it's my front end, lol. Said screw them brought it to a Chevy shop hoping they'd have more brains, and they tell me my tranny is fine it's my cats, when I had dropped off my cobalt to the Chevy dealer, the check engine light came on. After a while, they told me my tranny is fine that it's my cat, the obd says it's low effecency. Before all this I had replaced my spark plugs, replaced the resonator, cat, a new exhaust manifold, and a new exhaust. I've read that a clogged cat can bring shifting problems but I've unhooked my upstream O2 sensor to see if it's release pressure but no still the same. Anyone else with this problem. I bought this car at 106miles. It only had 124,000. I refuse to let it go as it could just be something stupidly to fix and simple. Anyone have any ideas or suggestions?
