Mazda vehicles seem to have this common issue as well. I have an 08 Mazda CX-9 4wd and one day randomly the 'AT' yellow warning like popped on along with the Check Engine light with a rough shift. When trying to accelerate from a stop sign it would not shift gears. Each gear you put it in like park or reverse it would be a hard/jerk shift. When I got the code read it came to be a p0974 for Shift Solenoid A Control Circut High.
Thank you so much for posting this. Everyone I've asked had no idea either, and because it happens sporadically, they couldn't test for it reliably. The first code it threw was for the Ambient air temp gauge (Where it just shows - - - on the video) and now it is throwing the code for TCM. The car was great the first year I had it...definately going Non-American next car. Thanks again for posting, VERY helpful.
Local mechanics had no clue " my" FIX was because of bad ground. Reset computer by disconnecting battery overnight then take a wire and ground the Transmission Control Module to grounding screw on engine block. Might not work for you but did for me. Another fellow has this solution on TH-cam. thanks TH-cam!
try disconnecting both battery posts for 20 minutes. this is to reset transmission control module. reconnect both battery posts and start car. the check engine light should go off. if your tcm was not previously dammaged then it should shift normal because it stores shift points and sends them to the transmission. if it does not shift as normal then you probably need to change the tcm...Please note, in trying this POSSIBLE SOLUTION, YOU ARE DOING SO AT YOUR OWN RISK. IT MAY BE BEST TO TAKE CAR TO A CERTIFIED MACHANIC!!!
i got my control module replace....worked great!!!....for 1000 miles....its will progressively get worse!!!...ur entire odometer will go haywire...doors will lock and unlock on their own.... steering wheel will be stiff as hell...cant turn to save ur life... im getting mine towed in soon....
My wife's car has the same problem. However, one issue I can't find an answer for is why a pair of wires behind the motor(appearing to be going to the transmission) were ripped apart. Yellow and purple wire. They were ripped right above the bracket that holds them in place.
I have this exact same issue: - Shifter clicking randomly, same noise as when you step on the brake in park. - Odometer jumping way faster than it should be. - Hopping in and out of torque converter engagement. - Turn signal makes door chime sound instead of turn signal sound. - Radio turns off randomly. This all happens after about 10 minutes of driving following a cold start. I'm damn near certain the TCM is overheating. Here's what I did: Pulled the TCM out of its little slot for easy access, then drove until the issues started. With the car running, I froze the shit out of both sides of the module by holding a can of compressed air upside down. Hopped back in the car, and got another 10 minutes of problem-free driving before the issues showed up again. I have a used TCM (same P/N as the original) on order, and will be programming the new TCM to the car once that comes in. I'll likely report back with the results, unless I forget. If this isn't updated by 7/30 and someone from the future sees this, please reply.
@@hardcoreinpa Hello, stranger from the future! 100% fixed!!! I received the TCM, and programmed it using the VCX Nano GM ($100 on Amazon) and ACDelco SPS software ($40 at www.acdelcotds.com/subscriptions). I could probably try re-flashing the BCM to correct the mileage, but I don't want to accidentally update it and somehow have new trouble codes show up. If it ain't broke... don't fix it. I initially had issues with the SAE-J2534 Wrapper install failing, and switching from Chrome to Internet Explorer was the solution. This is due to SPS being an ancient java application, and no fault of the VCX. Once that installed successfully, it was just a matter of following prompts. Once you hit go, the flashing itself takes about 5 minutes. If you or anyone else from the future has questions when it comes to enabling cruise control, programming fobs, or programming the TCM on the Cobalt, please reply :)
Are u sure about that cuz I just bought car with head gasket busted n I only see power steering on dashboard but no cranking cuz the start is in passenger seat floor
So how can we fix this what can we do about this I'm out of about 4000 dollars an I'm still having the same problem........ we need to file a class action lawsuit against the dealer they need to pay for this......
It really depends on how you take care of it. Mine has over 150,000 miles and all ive needed when i got it used was newe brakes and a new terminal for my battery cause the old one was corroded and wouldnt allow me to start everytime
thanks for this, my car is doing this!!!! except i'm having trouble with my traction too! I'll check into the power steering issue though with my dealership!
my 05 cobalt did the same thing and they replaced my tcm and a yr later it started doing it again! the dealership said 1200 to replace power steering unit. cobalts were recalled for power steering in 2010 so if u haven't had urs serviced at dealer to replace unit its free under recall. as for the tcm...I don't think it will ever get better since mine did it all over a yr later.
How much did this cost you to fix? The one I just bought did the exact same thing 24 hours after I bought it. Of course, no sign of ANYTHING wrong when my dad and I test drove it. It's at the dealer for diagnosis right now, but clearly this is the problem.
I have a 2008 Chevy cobalt. And I am having all types of electrical issues. the tire pressure sequencer is in the driver side door needs to be replaced in order for the light to go off.. the Signal indicator does not sound anymore. The front speaker just stopped working.. and according to the internet this is a common issue. The transmission is acting funny. I hate that I bought this can.. and of course once the warranty ends. it all goes to shit. But all of the issue I am having with this car. Is common on the complaint boards... GMC knew the issues. And are not going to fix it for free. unless somebody dies and then they will issue a free recall.
Hey bud. I'm running into the same problem after replacing a starter. Is your car shifting? Mine was just revving to 4 grand when I tried to get it to shift.
Same here, i replaced the starter.and then it wouldn't hardly shift, reved high as heck and after putting some transmission fluid treatment in it and test driving it, now it wont start at all.
Recently had the same trouble with my 06 Cobalt. Only occured after I took the car in to a Tire Plus shop to get a quick Oil change. They sabotaged my car. While they were underneath they unplugged the speed sensor. Most of these shops do things to Ur vehicles so that they can get more business from U. Thankful I had my uncle to check with his scanner
Ive been having this problem. I took it to the dealer, the mechanic hasnt given me a call back. The scanner code that appeared was u0073 communicaton modle bus off. I called and emailed GM well as NHTSA. Just waiting for a response. I hope they make a recall on this issue its unsafe to drive like this. I did my own research. I came across that alot of people changed the TCM and problem was fixed. But some suggested to clean the fuse box the BCM and ECM. Check the ground wires and Transmission wires. I did that and drove the car a few blocks and it seemed ok.... For now... If the issue continues I guess I'll have to buy the TCM ugh.
Juan Torres My mom has the same issue with her 06 cobalt, unfortunately Chevy won't do crap because they don't feel like fixing the issue. Her tcm is only reading half and now I gotta probably pump out 150 dollars just to get one because I suppose some of them are faulty
However tonight it's now not going into reverse however it sounds like it's clicking like it's engaging but when you step on the gas it doesn't go anywhere so now she's parked. It sucks it's been a good car to us since 08 if I remember correctly (I was roughly a little young so I have bad memory)
its your bushings this is a major problem they contract and expand allowing your shocks to make that banging sound if it comes from the back either side thats what it is, a 80 dollar part, little labor
my car hesitates to shift, like i try to put it in gear and it gets stiff. i just replaced the transmission. also, sometimes when i turn it on, my rpms fluctuate over and under the 1. it feels like its about to die, but it doesnt. and it doesnt lose power when im driving, help?
@CJStenstrom if it's slipping gears and not shifting it's probably your transmission control module. just have the dealership replace it. fixed my problem. still getting rid of the damn thing though...
@Nickocosmicfatplanet My cobalt is doing the same thing right now. I took it to the dealer a week ago they kept it for 3 days and claimed they couldn't find anything wrong with it. After I got it back it drove fine until today. I have been trying to find a tcm but i cant. So is this a part you have to get from the dealer and about how much does it cost to fix. Thanks for your help.
Hey in your video I can hear your car making a rattleing noise as your driving. Mine is doing the exact same thing. Do you know what it is by a chance?

Was it for sure the Transmission Control Module? I am having the same issue, and I need to fix it bad. Any help would be great. I had it at the Chevy dealer by me and they are clueless. I am trying a different garage tomorrow and would love to know what to tell themto fix because they probably won't figure it out either. ANd after this is fixed I will NEVER EVER buy a Chevy or GM car ever again. I will get rid of this crap once it's fixed and I can sell it. I will buy a Honda or Toyota
Have the same problem here with a 2008 chevy cobalt never again in my life will i drive or own a chevy this never would have happened with a ford. Whats the fix to this
i had this same issue, where the dashboard would go nuts, i paid 600 dollars at a dealership to fix it and a day later it did it again,,if they cant fix it this time, im selling it and getting an eclipse, mustang, or jetta, and i even put new rims on too,for 1200 dollars.
I watched a video on this and all they did was run a ground wire from the tcm to the body of the car and cleared a lot of their codes. The tcm is located in the front right in front of the jumper terminal. Hope this helps.
Transmission control module... had the same problem... got it replaced.... worked great for 1000 miles... then it started up again.... doors lock and unlock on their own...odometer goes crazy... and its impossibly hard to turn my car....hesitant to shift gears....when it does it slams... dude... get rid of that piece of shit... get a Toyata or a Honda Civic... reliable cars....
The chevy is easy to fix, the Fucken Old Recycled Dodge is not.Thats why ford is now installing heated tail gates so you can push them in winter without geting frostbite.
TURN IGN ON DNT START IT!!! JUST IGN ON POSITION FOR 10SEC THEN OFF FOR 10SEC AGAIN N NOW START IT LET IT RUN FOR 15SEC IT'LL IDLE SHITTY BUT SHOULD. GO BACK TOO NORMAL WITH IN 5-10MIN!!! IM AN OWNER OF A 06 COBALT LT N NEVER HAD PROBS WITH IT EVER N I DO WRK FOR AUTOZONE N AM ASE CERT. HOPE I HELPED A LIL.
well it happens that chevy cobalts are cheap pieces of shit! they have cheap front suspension, its almost normal to hear cluncks rattles and other noises in these poorly made cars. I have an 05 and I already put a good amount of money on it, Its going for sale soon..... So please people get rid of your cobalt and buy a more reliable car!
Friend told me they set the cars like this to steal money from customers. The miles are on the computer and they take their time on your wallet already preset

I watched a video on this and all they did was run a ground wire from the tcm to the body of the car and cleared a lot of their codes. The tcm is located in the front right in front of the jumper terminal. Hope this helps.
Use DeoxIT like it shows in the TH-cam vidoe titled "DeoxIT treatment to repair a CAN network problem". I did this and all the issues went away.

Found my 2007 Chevy Cobalt problem: it's not a Ford Ranger.
I heard that!
The chevy is easy to fix, the Fucken Old Recycled Dodge is not.Thats why ford is now installing heated tail gates so you can push them in winter without geting frostbite.
Never had to push my Ford (prefer Fucker Only Runs Downhill). Would like to push the Chevy off a cliff.

Dude u need to get rid of tht and buy a ford.
no oil temp pretty dangerous
Bad luck, mine is still great!
well it happens that chevy cobalts are cheap pieces of shit! they have cheap front suspension, its almost normal to hear cluncks rattles and other noises in these poorly made cars. I have an 05 and I already put a good amount of money on it, Its going for sale soon..... So please people get rid of your cobalt and buy a more reliable car!
And this is why I will never buy a compact american car.
Friend told me they set the cars like this to steal money from customers. The miles are on the computer and they take their time on your wallet already preset
