As a sound designer, I nearly had a heart attack when I saw this notification. Thank you, Dunkey, for highlighting the importance of something that most people don’t even think about while playing a game. Although, in fairness, if they’re not thinking about the sound while playing a game, that means the sound designers did their job right.
I appreciate the Sounddesign of every Game. Without it the Game would be dull and unfun. Without Sounddesign Great Visual Effects like an Atomic Breath from Godzilla would be reduced to just a Ray of light. Game Worlds would be lifeless without Sound. Sound is absolutely important. You have a great Job.
"We discussed this" killed me. I have to agree, sound design is the most interesting part that engages a player. I can't begin to properly express the anxiety I felt during some of the challenge bananas in dk64. The damn beaver mini game had my blood pressure up listening to those squeaky bastards.
The silence is really important. Outer Wilds does this really well. When you crash your ship or fall through the black hole and find yourself drifting in space and all you can hear is the sound of your character breathing... it's so perfect!
Outer Wilds has one of the best soundtracks and uses it so spectacularly. Every planet has their own sound. There's moments of silence and then moments of perfectly placed noise. The Echoes DLC really shines in this. That first intro into the new area where you just get hit with that orchestra track out of nowhere, so beautiful. Choosing to be vague as to not spoil things obviously.
Outer Wilds is the game I thought of immediately when silence came up in the video. No game I've ever played made me feel so much like an astronaut. Genuinely breathtaking at times. I remember the first few times of coasting through Dark Bramble, trying to be completely still and silent while coasting on momentum alone, terrified of alerting the anglerfish. Just perfect
My sister loves the sound of Luigi walking in Luigi's Mansion. It's very important for a game's sounds to make feel relaxed so that you can have a better experience with it and not feel frustrated when hearing the same sounds over and over.
It's fucking insane you got Mike winslow for this. God damn. My brother saw him open up for Animal collective at bonnaroo in 2012. Shit was fucking insane. Guy has a pedalboard in his diaphragm

i love the longer dunkey videos! This one was particularly amazing, with the winslow cameo comin in hot! Either they are both naturally gifted as non sequitur comics, or Dunkey's editing is so good that he made it seem that way, bcuz it worked perfectly
For me, personally, the top tier sound design on Super Nintendo was Super Metroid. Start a new file on that game and just listen carefully to what you hear during the first hour or so of play. Dark, brooding, atmospheric, lonely, heroic, it's iconic. It's classic. Mastapiece.
i was ready for a 7 minute video of random video game sounds and am proud of dunkey who managed to make me think that that‘s a completely normal thing for him to upload

I love sound design in games so much, I’ve played two games solely because I liked the audio direction while watching gameplay (demons souls remake, Thymesia). I really wish there was a larger focus on it in more games and I wish people would appreciate it as much as they should
@@sinelacicoI got and finished Warhammer 40,000: Mechanicus exactly because it's phenomenal sound design. Usually I can't stand Warhammer but it was worth it. Worth checking out.

Sound effects and music have grown to be one my favorite parts in games as well as music. Shout out to all the artists working on sound design, without them we got nothing.
Aw damn, Mr. Winslow! I actually met him pretty recently while working at a hotel he was staying at. Probably one of the nicest guys I've ever met. I got to drive him to the airport for his flight and this dude, not having any cash, pulls out two photos and signs them for me and one of my coworkers. Better than any tip I ever received.
Truly a masterpiece. Reminded me of when my girlfriend left me days before I moved to a far away city to study something I hate. The sounds of that day are timeless classics.
@@shanemiller1182 Yeah. She was my childhood friend too. So I not only lost my girlfriend, but also my best friend. Now I'm just the villain of the story. It's even funnier when you remember that the project I was working on fell apart on the same week. So I'm out of money XD
My heart soared when he included the clip of Mario running around Tostarena in the intro. The amount of times I go back to that world just because of that pitter patter is unhealthy 🙂
Never give up, fren. I gave up on the future i saw of working with companies in making every surface of a home an accessible touch screen. Now my dream was seen as made for billionaires and corrupt software companies so i dropped out, but it still stings when i see that kind of thing in movies and stuff. Dont let those dreams go mate.
Another thing about sound design is that it has to be essentially perfect. If a texture doesn't load properly or if the game skips a few frames, it sucks but it won't bother you that much. But if a sound effect that usually plays doesn't play? If a track just randomly cuts off? If the audio glitches and makes a weird sound? It's the most JARRING experience.
Reminds me of how in the Witness, they designed over 100 different walking sounds for the character across the different terrains of the island, so that the sound of walking would never get annoying as the player explores all over the island.
I remember Michael Winslow from his last century appearances in the movies Police Academy. Yes, he was already making crazy sounds by then! I'm glad he could bring his talent and craziness in ingenuity to video games' sound.
When I was at audio engineer school, we had a whole course on game audio. We basically had to make this half ass game in the unreal engine and add the sound to the game using a program called F Mod. After the course I quickly realized thats not what i wanted to do career wise but since then, i’ve had the upmost respect for people in game audio. That shit is a grind.
I did the same thing for school recently, way more sound effects than I anticipate. I like working with sound and stuff, but working on a game was a mess.
I feel that. There are a lot of courses I took in college that confirmed for me two things: the people who devote their lives to this stuff are true artists, and I am NOT gonna be one of them.
1. i can't believe he actually got Michael Winslow on a video. Winslow is an absolute legend this was incredible. 2. sound design is such an underrated part of games because, just like in film, a lot of times when it's done right you don't really notice it, but if it's done badly, you definitely know. good sound design becomes such an immersive part of the experience of a game that it just feels natural and so you don't always pick up on all the little nuances of it and just how incredible it is. sometimes i've not realized just how important sound was in a specific game until i hear an iconic sound out of context from the game and i'm instantly transported back to playing it.
@@KucheKlizma i simply mean it's not something everyone who plays games raves about. like Dunkey said in the beginning of the video, gameplay and graphics are what gets attention, and that's understandable because gameplay and graphics are good and fundamental to a fun and immersive game! but like i said, good sound design gets "underrated" in the sense that if it's good you don't even really notice it, a lot of hard work goes into making sure that most people don't even think twice about all the sounds helping to create the experience.
This is awesome, I can't believe you got so huge to be able to get THE Michael Winslow! This is the most legendary collab! I honestly thought this was a classic Donkey fake out with clips taken from another video! ♥️♥️♥️
what a seriously excellent video. i had no idea so many auditory experiences were performoned by one man. what a legend, thank you for showcasing him !
I actually bought a game solely for it's sound design once: Risk of Rain 2. After watching a few videos on it, I loved the sounds the weapons made, and the sounds of footsteps, damage, jumping, et cetera. Such fantastic audio for such a fantastic game.
Risk of Rain 2 has some of the greatest audio! And their music is beautiful. You feel like you're exploring a serene planet when in reality you're trying to fight for your own survival. I love how they contrasted that with the audio.
Man, this is funnier on the second watch, now that I'm actually wrapping my head around Michael and Dunkey collaborating on a video. I thought you were just taking soundclips out of context from something he did, watching the first few clips of him. You're such a consistently funny youtuber, ten years now I've laughed at these videos and they never lost that "classic dunkey" feeling.
I'm convinced a strong reason why that game was as successful as it was is because of the sound it makes when the bullets connect to the target that fftt fftt fftt sound.
I'm so excited you did this. As a sound designer and mixer myself, the big thing about sound in most contexts is that it's like Robo-God in Futurama: "When you do things right, they won't be sure you've done anything at all". It's almost never the star, but it helps everything ELSE be the best star it can be. Conversely though, the inverse is also true: "If you fuck up the sound, everyone knows it and hates you". Like, when a game freezes, the disturbing part isn't the freeze, it's the last sound played creepily being repeated at 10-20 Hz. Bad graphics, dialogue, or gameplay can't hurt you, but the digital equivalent of feedback actually can. Or if you can't get the right feedback or hear the dialogue over a bad mix, well, you're a literal roadblock to enjoying the work.
I've been playing the Dishonored games again, and funny enough when this video popped up, I replayed them all without music (music is amazing though, merges really well into the sound effects) but the atmosphere when you're inside the city of Karnaca, just incredible... I just sat there on a roof top while it was evening ingame, listening to the abience of the environment. Very relaxing. I think it's still one of the greatest masterpieces ever made.
Dunkey, my man, mah absolute legends in terms of video games and to some degree other media. This collab with Mr Winslow is the most amazing content ever, period. Damn, hearing all this stuff really makes me wish sound was real.
That water sound effect from Winslow was impeccable.
As a sound designer, I nearly had a heart attack when I saw this notification. Thank you, Dunkey, for highlighting the importance of something that most people don’t even think about while playing a game. Although, in fairness, if they’re not thinking about the sound while playing a game, that means the sound designers did their job right.
Man. Same. As an audio engineer I feel so damn seen. Thank you dark souls.
I thought about the sounds in donkey Kong country as a kid because I really loved them.
@@jjdunne6969 me too :)
Thats crazy, I had no idea that sound designers were prone to notification based heart attacks
"We discussed this" killed me. I have to agree, sound design is the most interesting part that engages a player. I can't begin to properly express the anxiety I felt during some of the challenge bananas in dk64. The damn beaver mini game had my blood pressure up listening to those squeaky bastards.
Or the ghosts in Ghosts n Goblins!
I will always be terrified by the sound of the voice in that pyramid yelling GET OUT and that tick tock of that dang timer
Of course the beaver minigame was intense, the damn thing was bugged
Drifting in space, only hearing your breath, staring at the sun as the music starts to play. Beautiful.
When you're traveling to a planet in a new loop and the banjo kicks in.... Mastapeece
outer wilds sucks play a real game lol

It's such a weird but solid detail, I have to agree. Luigi's Mansion has probably one of the best sound designs in all of gaming

nice to know this video made you happy
Another thing about sound design is that it has to be essentially perfect. If a texture doesn't load properly or if the game skips a few frames, it sucks but it won't bother you that much. But if a sound effect that usually plays doesn't play? If a track just randomly cuts off? If the audio glitches and makes a weird sound? It's the most JARRING experience.
I still vividly remember Michael Winslow's boss fight, just absolutely carried the games he was in

Reminds me of how in the Witness, they designed over 100 different walking sounds for the character across the different terrains of the island, so that the sound of walking would never get annoying as the player explores all over the island.
That reminds me in LSD Dream Emulator you have the most horroble repetitive stepping sounds for the entire game.
I feel like "not being annoying" is sort of against the spirit of The Witness, though.
@@goatbone Quest 64. Not horrible sounds, but very noticeable, and endless.
Utmost. The utmost respect.
@@TheMettaur Damn.. beat me to it.
I don't know who is underrating sound design, must be a new trend.

The shockwave sequence of INSIDE is probably the most stunning usage of good sound design in a game I've played. Pure adrenaline
Michael Winslow doing the "WOW!" sound was not what I expected, but definitely made my day
I'm so excited you did this.
Escape From Tarkov is a masterclass in how to infuriate players by fucking up sound at critical junctures
I've been playing the Dishonored games again, and funny enough when this video popped up, I replayed them all without music (music is amazing though, merges really well into the sound effects) but the atmosphere when you're inside the city of Karnaca, just incredible...
