I always find it funny the subtitles explicitly note her voice becomes less robotic, and "more sexy"
I'm sad he didn't mention Ellen McLain's performance as GLaDOS when talking about keeping personality in your characters, even if they are robots. The performance is cold and calculated and packed full of character.
Ellen McLain is probably one of the best of all time for that reason. It can be easy (for some) to simply act human when voicing a robot character and call it giving personality to a machine. But what sets Ellen McLian’s performance apart is that when voicing GLaDOS, she doesn’t sound human but still gives the character strong and memorable personality.
I'd say Loader Bot or Gortys in Tales are also a great robots with real characters
Portal 2 especially had really great dialogue. If I remember I actually laughed out loud a few times alone..in my dark bedroom hunched over my keyboard
He was literally playing Portal clips during that part, so... p sure he was giving props to that whole game, because all of the characters exemplified what he was talking about. He wasn't there to extoll one actor, he was there to make a point, and the whole game made his point.

In defense of LA Noire, the early cases merely serve to prepare you for what’s down the line. That’s why the acting in some of them is really telling. When you get to homicide and vice, I swear, many witnesses’ expressions are difficult to read.
Yeah like REALLY difficult. The game was really well made
Once you get to tango with straight-up sociopaths, it gets quite difficult. I mean there are interrogations where the suspects specifically don't have tells because they aren't fazed by lying or are just batshit insane.
God i love La Noire, to me its a masterpiece and 100% deserves to become a series
I would say the hardest of the interrogations is the sleazy business man when you're investigating the construction yard arson. The whole game has taught you to gamify facial expressions and voices through exaggerated acting so you can read for tells, and suddenly you run into this guy that is a complete stone wall, cause he's actually a businessman whose entire job is to have a poker face. It's so jarring, I failed that interrogation completely, couldn't get shit out of him
What's seriously aggravating is how everyone uses the one very first interrogation you do against someone who is established as a terrible liar in-universe as proof the acting is "bad".
Like that is literally your first case, and right after the interview your partner outright says "wow that guy is a terrible liar". It is not as all representative.
I have never played Death Stranding but that clip near the end of the video shook me. The facial capture, the graphics, and the acting. actually kind of incredible
Give it a go and at least play up until you get a vehicle. The 'walk simulator' bit at the start is super slow and lots of people dont make it past that, its only a couple of hours. But its a truly incredible game, the feelings that you get when you are finishing a long haul and a low roar track comes on are beautiful. Truly unique gaming experience imo.

Yeah I haven't really seen anything on Death Stranding other than Norman Reedus carrying stuff but that clip was super impressive
5:02 That voice man. This is peak of video game acting right there
When the actors can't gain context from each other on a big budget mocap set, its entirely up to the directors to give them that context. Direction is really where video games usually drop the ball. Even the world's best voice actors fall apart when they aren't given good or any direction. Peter Dinklage is probably used to great direction, so when he is given none, he has no idea what to do and becomes a monotone robot. Other people are used to being given shit context as a voice actor, and sometimes they can pull through, but it makes it even more jarring when they get the read wrong. They can guess the context of one line completely correctly and nail it super hard, but guess the next one wrong and suddenly they sound super silly. It's these situations that can make voice dubs such a mixed bag of fuck. It's true that the extremes of voice acting are the most entertaining, but a lot of times the middle ground seems to be made up of people just trying their best in a terrible situation, to varying degrees of success.
this is the key. The direction in most games sucks and the games with good direction stick out so easily - rockstar and naughty dog games for example, hell even halo 2.

We did an interview with Ruth Jarman, the voice of Mega Man in MM8 and X in X4 and it was really insightful to how some companies handled voices in games back then. The actors for those games were given no direction or context and weren't even told they were recording for two games. Really crazy stuff, but it's really charming.
You can really tell that they didn't know what the fuck was happening.
I feel like this happens a lot.
The voice actors tend to take a lot of the flak for a bad performance, when a lot of times, it's just the direction (or lack therof) they recieved. The best, and you rarely hear of it in video games, is the Shrek effect, where a VA gets a good chunk of the way through their lines, something clicks about the character, and then they're allowed to just go back and rerecord everything they already did.
@@aprinnyonbreak1290 If I recall correctly, Ruth said the recordings were done over one day. I really wonder why they would do that.
But she was super cool. She embraces it and listening to her lines is great. She seems to really understand who the characters are now, so who knows what could have happened with another chance.
@@aprinnyonbreak1290 Those basket ball players were struggling to just read the lines, much less act.
Pretty sure stuff like that still happens. Was gonna write about how I remember there being a Voice Actor union in the news a few years back because of unfair compensation for their work. Many of the people doing work straight up did not know who they were or what game they were working for and therefore could not ask for appropriate payment.
Turns out yeah, there was a strike between 2016-2017 that was eventually resolved, but companies still don't have to say what specific game or character the VA is about to work with. Just what type of game it is & if it belongs to an existing franchise or not.

2:25 in the case of Horizon (and Mass Effect) sometimes the voice acting is technically good, but the execution of the scene is what ruins it. In the example given, the voice actor is clearly putting emotion and care into his lines, but the animation doesnt express the same intent and emotion.
idk about horizon, but at least in mass effect they improved most major problems with the animation/models. Still not amazing, but it became bearable
Agreed. Or Thok laying on his side for days with limited animation really kills any performance in the voice acting.
Sometimes I think Bioware just doesn't give the voice actor the context of the scene, so they perform it well but they're putting emphasis on the wrong thing.
"I can't believe YOU took the money"
...hits different than
"I can't believe you TOOK the money."
Tells two different stories. Context matters.
Where is the emotion and care? Guy's about to die and he says the most half hearted "im sorry, please" ever, doesn't make much of a difference if the animation is improved
@@aaronm1246 There's still subtlety in his voice and in his inflection. one thing not talked about enough is direction for voice acting. A good director sets the stage & tells the VA the purpose of their lines so they know what to deliver, as well as being able to identify & demand retakes until they know which take is the one that should be shipped.
I know it’s not Donkey Kong December, but can we just appreciate how good the voice actor for Donkey Kong is?

"Boy did I pick the wrong day to eat a whole lemon"
-some legend from the original video
I remember listening to a voice acting session of Dust: an Elysian Tale (love that game and it’s voice acting) and the voice director really pulled it all together. Like the voice actors where pretty good, but the voice director knew the full context and really knew how each line should be delivered and he would give them whatever context they needed or direct them to use a certain inflection and the whole thing came together perfectly. Like we need more competent voice directors if these teams are even using voice directors.
amazing amazing game !!!
That's what went wrong with Dinklebot in Destiny. The voice director didn't do his job. We know Peter can emote and give a good performance.
this is why Days Gone is so cringe to me. The voice direction is just terrible 90% percent of the time 😩
Dust was basically Shovel Knight before it was cool to be Indie. One of the better games ever made, everytime I play I 100% it. Art direction, sound direction, tight controls, fun combat, and there is some replay value with the customizable stats, crafting equipment and difficulties. Truly a gift of a game
Matt Colville, who wrote Evolve and contributed on a few other big titles, talked about that process on stream a few times. He worked on some voice sessions with Liam O'Brien from Critical Role as voice director. There were times where Matt would give this long spiel to Liam about the background and context that the actor couldn't hear and Liam would turn that into a really short instruction that nailed exactly what Matt wanted. Voice director is a really hard, really important job.
Looking back to this video, Baldur's Gate 3 voice acting is really remarkable and it's one of the main reasons I love the game. A good acting in the game might not affect the overall gameplay, but truly makes the gaming experience up to another level.
I think people unironically need to understand how talented of a voice actor dunkey is, he can somehow create the most genuine sounding sarcastic dialog you will ever hear

Naughty Dog did very well for creating symmetry and organic scenes from their actors. Both TLOU and Uncharted are getting live actions done.
Their direction and story telling practically leaps from the consoles onto the big screens.
I hope the voice actors all get roles in the movies and series.
I think there are two main reasons why both games are getting live action adaptations:
1. The games were both very successful
2. Both games are very cinematic, so they're very easy to adapt to a linear medium.
As far as I know, only in The Last Of Us series will have 2 voice actors from the game, and only one of them will play the same character.

I loved the voice acting in the Legacy of Kain series. It was hammy at times but undeniably iconic. Just having games be fun instead of being crushed under the pressure to be a cinematic masterpiece seems so difficult these days. If I wanted to watch a movie, I wouldn't be playing games. I think the pressure to deliver a jaw-dropping experience is what leads games into that uncanny Valley and subsequently the bargain bin.

@@tescobinliner oh god no. I can never like those games again and I loved blood omen.
Video game companies have only recently begun to understand the value of having personnel on board who know how to work with Actors. The first few decades of gaming were atrocious for acting because you either had developers voicing characters themselves, or you had developers trying to give direction to actors who were obviously out of their league 😅
@@Steak818 Dog do you realize how much that would limit their audience? So many huge franchises are Japanese, and you're expecting joe-schmoe to put up with Wii Sports in Japanese? Dubbing is needed to appeal to a wider audience. It helps make the game more immersive and seamless to the average player. If a game with as many cutscenes and voice lines as Persona 5 can have a pretty great dub, than with the right amount of effort and time most games can walk away with pretty decent dubs.
Some games with the devs acting as the characters actually turned out with okay voice acting
@@Steak818 i think a majority would be fine with only english.

Our demand for quality dub is too high to begin with.
The moment Dunk said "reading lines off a piece of paper" literally the first thing that came into my head was Dinklebot, and the mad lad played clips of Dinklebot.
I still feel bad for Dinklebot. All the voice work was done, then Activision/Bungie fucked D1 up a year before release and he had to record everything again. I don't blame him for phoning it in. Shame, because I much preferred him voicing my ghost.
For me “reading lines off a piece of paper” to me reminded me of the first Shenmue game, there is a girl you meet that says she wants to be a teacher in such a horribly bad way, that you feel like you want to sink through the floor because of how bad it sounds >_<

I do voice acting in asia so I can speak to some of the issues here..... usually we (in my experience) are given our lines as a massive spreadsheet of single sentences with little to no context for them. If the delivery doesn't fit the scene its probably because the actor didn't know what the scene was and had to give a random emotion to the line based on little to no information.
How did you get into voice acting?
@@brendanhunter389 Totally by accident. A company I was working for just randomly needed some audio recorded for some promotional material and for an APP they were developing and asked me to do it. Then, from going to the studio, I met other people from other departments that needed the odd bit of audio recorded....it just snowballed.
@@josephjoebrown11 that’s pretty cool man. Hope you enjoy it!
Any ideas why is that something that can affect the quality so much is overlooked? Providing no context to the actor seems like a very dumb thing to just leave out.
Yeah, stuff like that happens a lot from what I hear. For the german version of a Just Cause game, 2 or three I think, they got a popular german lets player to voice a character. He was told he was going to voice the goofy, best friend, comic relief character of the main protagonist. But they actually changed his role to the military radio guy without actually telling him. He then recorded his voice lines thinking he should sound goofy and fun and they just used them even though they didn't fit to the new role at all.
That scene from Death Stranding has gotta be one of the most potent monologues in gaming.

No matter whether you love or hate the game, so much effort was put into the voice work that you HAVE to acknowledge the hard work, regardless of whether or not it was worth it.
Not only voice acting, NORMAL acting, character design, facial animations, general sound design, fidelity, ambient environment inclusion, EVERYTHING technical was spot on and miles ahead of its competition.
OF course, you are not wrong mentioning voice acting. The biggest problem was too much wokeness, it didn't bother me too much, but I can see how it bothers people.
Knowing that they were going to work their asses off was all the more reason I wish they never made a sequel. I always kind of thought if they made a sequel it would just at best not have the same impact, or even totally suck.
