Just by watching the footage I could practically feel the work environment where nobody could just say no as more and more bloat gets added and it looks like the levels and powerups where designed separately and by different people and then awkwardly frankensteined together. SE told Naka that they weren't a company that MADE platformers, but were willing to give them a shot specifically because Naka was a legend in the industry. If anyone's to blame here, it's Naka for not releasing a good, successful product.

The saddest thing about that… is that the dance sequence could’ve been a good qte like in the ff7 remake, but instead they wasted balan on making really bad qte segments. They could’ve at least made the balan sections into something like Superman 64. I mean it would still be a super shitty game, but at least then it would be slightly memeable in a good way.
3:12 - I'm really feelin' the soundtrack on this one... Also, I noticed that there is a total of 2 animation sets for the dance sequences. All the backup dancers on the outside of the ring have had their dance animations copy/pasted and are identical, then the main character and the farmer have the other animation. 10/10
The motion capture movement in this game is terrifying. Imagine being woken up in the middle of the night, you look across your room and see a farmer breakdancing in the corner before he slowly vanishes from existence

I remember seeing balan the character in thumbnails before the game and I remember thinking “wow that looks like the guy from nights!” You know... the Dreamcast game. Look the point is they blew their budget on a decent designer that they fired halfway through and then they were left with twenty bucks to fund the rest of the project. I’m one of the people who are positive this was going to be a mobile game that they (poorly) optimized for consoles and pc at the last second so they could charge the full amount for it.

@Crzh I sorta get it. I enjoy watching terrible movies, like The Room looks professional next to the movies I like to watch. But those I know are terrible, I assert they are awful, and I watch them when I want to turn off my brain and watch failure for an hour and a half. A video game is at least a four hour commitment in most cases and it being bad isn't funny, just frustrating. Maybe they're philisophical zombies in the truest sense?
The fucking dancing sequence gets me every single time. They make it seem so intimate, and emotional, then they start doing what is basically Fortnite dances.

I've played the game. That one is no exaggeration. You literally can't decide when it turns you into a box. The box is uncontrollable, and has ice physics. It is HILARIOUSLY useless.

some of them feel intentionally bad. Like usually in games they give you upgrades that allow you to go through areas and find secrets, this game instead gives you upgrades that allow you to ALMOST go through areas, ALMOST.
The entire game is them putting up a roadblock, giving you the tool to get around the roadblock, and then removing the roadblock entirely and forgetting that it even existed and is then confused as to why you have a new tool.
Looks like? This is absolutely a tax write-off. No sane human would look at this and think "yes, this is something we should legitimately sell for 60 dollars."

No. I know exactly what this is. 15 years ago, the makers of Xavier Renegade Angel and Square Enix made some kind of bet, that the Xavier team won. Their reward? Square Enix would make Xavier Renegade Angel: The Video Game. The game was put into production, and then Square Enix time passed. Then, it was nearly finished. Square Enix called up the Xavier team to ask how they were going to market it, and learned in horror that Xavier had been cancelled years ago, and the team was really really drunk and/or high when they made that deal, so didn't remember to cancel it. Square Enix worked feverishly to scrub the Xavier brand from the game, and released it with a bunch of assets they had laying around. It's the only story that makes sense.
This game reminds me of those kids shows where each episode there's a very specific problem with a very specific solution, then they sing and dance at the end.

Actually I disagree. If they made it with 10 powerups then you could make them very distinct. If you have 50 then none will be able to be fleshed out enough.
@@Bajonkas I actually really didn’t like Odyssey’s power ups. Mario is fun to control, he’s agile, responsive, and has a variety of jumps. Sure, some of the transformations were okay, but they were all less fun to control than Mario. I like additive power ups, not swapping movesets, where nearly all of the swaps are less fun than your regular Mario. That, plus the ungodly amount of filler moons and repeated content really got to me by the end of the game. I feel like I’m taking crazy pills over here having my 6/10 Odyssey experience while everyone else is acting like Odyssey cured their Mom’s cancer.
Idk if I'd say that Odyssey gets any points for being designed by sane people. In the end Odyssey still deemphasises exploration. The different enemies you control are often very simple or aren't pushed to the limits of what the player can do with them.
gotta appreciate how they made all the powerups just usable for completing the main task but impossible for actually having fun with off the main path, incredible

This is like an experimental platformer that would have been released early in the PS2 era, too ambitious for its own good, and only remembered by the few who had it as children before they got any good games. But this was released in 2021.

This literally looks and feels like it started off as a Kickstarter project. The fact that Square Enix published this and charged full price is astounding.
Istg looking at how much mileage one can get by playing Celeste and Hollow Knight instead, it becomes especially grating. Hell both of those games together cost less than anal wonderland.

15 years ago, the makers of Xavier Renegade Angel and Square Enix made some kind of bet, that the Xavier team won.
Their reward? Square Enix would make Xavier Renegade Angel: The Video Game.
The game was put into production, and then Square Enix time passed. Then, it was nearly finished. Square Enix called up the Xavier team to ask how they were going to market it, and learned in horror that Xavier had been cancelled years ago, and the team was really really drunk and/or high when they made that deal, so didn't remember to cancel it.
Square Enix worked feverishly to scrub the Xavier brand from the game, and released it with a bunch of assets they had laying around.
It's the only story that makes sense.

Actually I disagree. If they made it with 10 powerups then you could make them very distinct. If you have 50 then none will be able to be fleshed out enough.
@@11th_defender51 odyssey has a bunch of powerups and they're all cool. It's a little bit different but i think it's possible to do it right
Dynamite Headdy has a similar concept (interchangeable head powerups) its actually fun and it released in the 90’s!
Honestly the designs were pretty interesting. Too bad the powers are limiting the gameplay instead of enhancing it.
@@Bajonkas I actually really didn’t like Odyssey’s power ups. Mario is fun to control, he’s agile, responsive, and has a variety of jumps. Sure, some of the transformations were okay, but they were all less fun to control than Mario. I like additive power ups, not swapping movesets, where nearly all of the swaps are less fun than your regular Mario.
That, plus the ungodly amount of filler moons and repeated content really got to me by the end of the game. I feel like I’m taking crazy pills over here having my 6/10 Odyssey experience while everyone else is acting like Odyssey cured their Mom’s cancer.
I love how every single power either has no use or is only used for one specific thing.
Really makes you appreciate the density and ideas in Odessey.
Like there's no room for experimenting and trying out the power-up to see if you could reach new areas or something. It's just a glorified key

Idk if I'd say that Odyssey gets any points for being designed by sane people. In the end Odyssey still deemphasises exploration. The different enemies you control are often very simple or aren't pushed to the limits of what the player can do with them.

I'm am legitimately impressed with how incompetent this game is. This is like an experimental platformer that would have been released early in the PS2 era, too ambitious for its own good, and only remembered by the few who had it as children before they got any good games.
But this was released in 2021.
This is just pure madness. Feels bad for those who is looking forward to this game and thought this could be the successor of Dreams into Night

Ha that's true, if this came out in like 2003 when I was 8 years old, I would've thought it was a fun and good game lol. There's some games I played in the PS2, OG Xbox, GC era i thought were fun and maybe good but turns out years later people on the internet bashed it to shit and it was actually a terrible game.

they sent like 80% of their budget on the Hat guy but then they remembered they had to make the game
I honestly don't understand why they didn't just make a more conventional platformer with the Hat Guy. This thing is like if they put Sonic on the box art and then in the actual game you play as some generic human - wait that's just Sonic X, bad example.
