I can attest to the effectiveness of OSPHO Rust Treatment Formula. My friend and I had a 1/4" piece of Steel that we had bent into an angle bracket for a Trolling motor mount to go on the bow of his 15 foot Bay Scooter that sat right above the waterline. We were in Corpus Christi, TX in the early 90's and in case you didn't know it, the Gulf of Mexico is one of the (if not the highest) highest salt content bodies of water in the world and rust is a huge problem along the gulf coast and especially in marine environments. Anyway, we treated our mount plate with Ospho and let it cure for 24 hours, then we applied a 2nd coat and let it cure for another 24 hours. We then painted the mount plate with some Red rattle can spray paint (might have been rustoleum but I don't recall for sure) and put 2 or 3 coats of paint on it. Now under normal circumstances that plate would have started to rust no matter how many coats of paint you put on it because the salt environment is so harsh it just finds a way to get through, but our Ospho Treated mount performed like a champ for at least 2 years of frequent fishing trips where it was constantly getting splashed with the high salt content water of Corpus Christi Bay area and it never showed any signs of rust. After this I swear by this stuff!!!!!
Great video I relaying this to a friend of mine who never heard of this product. We used it in the military on outdood antennae fixtures and it's used in Marine Harvbor on bridges and such.
Ospho does work well. I have used it on several old trailers and a lot of old rusty machinery. Just be sure you always paint with an Oil based paint afterwards.
Stacy Jens didn't see the typo. I meant to say oil based paint. Anyway, that is what the Ospho rep said. I have scraped and wire brushed all the loose rust off of machinery and trailers, coated them with Ospho, let it dry overnight and then painted with tractor and farm paint I got at tractor supply. I added the hardener they sell for it as well. So far this has kept any rust from coming back.
reck0n3r in my experience the Ospho, after it dries, leaves a coating on the converted rust. I then put oil based enamel on it I get from tractor supply, with their hardener. Several trailers and farm equipment pieces have not showed any signs of rusting. Just be sure to scrape and wire brush off any loose rust before applying the Ospho. Hope this helps. Tom
Very cool! My dad was a builder and decades ago I attended the Chicago Art Institute studying fine arts. Point being, I'm pretty handy and I love architecture. These videos are fun and informative so thank you. I've lived in older homes most of my life which I miss. Love my neighborhood now but I'm living in a 25 yo house. My front door is a nice 8 panel door. It is rusting though and I looked at the replacement cost and want to believe I can salvage it. I have small bubbles of rust rearing their ugly heads, outside. I think the exterior might be due to a brass kick plate that wasn't sealed with caulk. Is this product a good option for my door if it's not too badly rusted? It isn't too noticeable yet, but could be worse than I think under the paint. Thanks!!
@@cdb8315 Hi. The Klean strip instructions do not say anything about harming PVC. So I test it myself. I coated a pvc piece with the stuff and after 30 minutes I wiped it off and there was no effect on the pipe at all. I think it's fine.
@@AlleyPicked thank you for your reply. Wish I could send you picture of my door. Home Depot wants $2,000 plus for a newer one with frame, even though frame is in perfect shape. I am sharing your post on my Social Media . Thanks again.
I’m using this stuff now! I wanted to use it on a air return vent inside my home. Is it going to be toxic after it dries? Do you have to paint over it?
Thank you for posting this video. I have just learned about OSPHO and started searching for some info on line. This is how I found your channel. I am wondering how would you rate this product after almost four years? Thank you. P.S. I live at Neenah and Wellington. ;)
Ospho is very good. However, since I posted that video, I found a similar cheaper product available at Home Depot called "Klean Strip Concrete & Metal Prep". I have a rusty water pipe in the basement, will this stop the rust or transform it into a viable piece of pipe without having to tear out the pipe with its minor drip? HELP!
Cut the pipe and put a rubber sleeve for plumbing, should be able to find any hardware store. Leak free. I tried jb weld underwater for pin hole leak before and never worked. Sleeve is the way to go.
How's that paint holding up? Little do most folks know that you must take a hose and brush and wash off and neutralize the Ospho before painting otherwise it will turn to jell under that nice paint job and your paint will fall off at a later date. After you took that rag and wiped off the extra, you could have let that piece set for 15 or more years, but, you still have to remove it leaving the protected metal to be primed and/or painted. It's only a RUST preventative to help you get through a project before the entire project such as a car, needs to be painted, BUT, only when you are ready to paint is when you wash with soap and water or wipe off with a damp rag, your entire item to be painted. That's right, OSPHO is ONLY a metal preservative UNTIL you are ready to paint. You must wash off or neutralize any remaining Ospho leaving the iron phosphate, or converted rust behind. It's only a temp fix for rust.
OSPHO dries and can be wiped off and it can be used as your primer. You don't need to prime over Ospho it is the primer or at least can be. It kills the iron oxide that is on the surface and seals the metal so that the corrosion activators (i.e. dirt, grime, oxygen, any conductors that might start the oxidation process) can not reach the parent metal and if used properly will last for YEARS!
this guy painted the under side of a "trash" patio table with a brush, so what do you expect? , I would not trust his process / procedure for a car panel / door etc. I have been fighting rust on old cars for years (and by rust I mean heavy pitted rust not just surface rust that you can clean off with a paper towel, LOL) and tried everything from expensive stuff like Metal Rescue and or POR15 to cheap yet effective Phosphoric acid from Home Depot and what I learned is that best results are had with a combination of abrasives such as a wire wheel and acids, which have to be neutralized and washed off after application, I would also recommend not wasting your money on the rust converter products in your local auto parts stores
What acids and how do you do it? After I sand and clean the door of my car minutes after I see a yellow layer of rust form, I have used thinner alcohol and vineager to clean the raw steel but dont know what to do later, Im stucked here because I cant apply primer or paint correctly. The only thing that worked is that after I sand and apply the thinner or vineager I wait just a bit and apply primer while the steel is a bit moistured, that is the only thing that has worked so far, that way the rust doesnt have time to form again but I am affraid that some days latter the primer and paint start peeling off 😥 I hope you answer, good day
Try letting your parts soak in white vinegar if possible and you can leave your part in for days or months without damage to the metal! IT WILL REMOVE ALL RUST EVENTUALLY. . I filled a 55 gallon drum a quarter of the way and placed a big metal piece in it and most was above the liquid, but I found that covering the barrel caused the acid for become suspended and attack even the rust above the liquid!! I wouldn't use anything else and be sure to thoroughly dry your parts and store covered in/under newspaper if you must, or prime and paint if you can. I wound use anything else other than good ole cheap White Distilled Vinegar anymore and I'm getting better with speed to avoid flash rusting!!! Lay the part in the hot sun after dried to make sure all moisture is baked off. OSPHO must be washed off with soap and water, or at least water before prime and painting anyway!!! Waste of money! It only preserves your metal until you are ready to wash it off and paint, like on a large vehicle of sorts.

It is not toxic. I was also going to use some in a vent also. Read the instructions just in case, but I didn't even notice any odor after it dries.
I have best luck if I prime after ospho, then topcoat: it's near enough to painting new metal.
