The Naval Jelly contains phosphoric acid and converts rust into iron phosphate, which is the black stuff you mentioned. :) Some rust removers use tannic acid and the byproduct is iron tannate.
@@DIYMAN Any OTC rust removal product will contain an acid. All of the rest of the gunk they put in there is used for smell, look and viscosity. TBH, you would get better results just going to a hardware store and buying phosphoric acid. Make sure you use rubber gloves, eye protection and have a neutralizer nearby (baking soda). It's almost like prepping a car for paint, a good rust removal is all about the steps and labor you put into it.
@@DIYMAN If you are doing a lot of rust removal, you will definitely save money as a gallon of phosphoric acid is around $12-16 depending on what brand and where you live. One thing that I have seen a video of but never seen or used in person, is rust removal by laser. That looks SWEET, its just crazy expensive for the machine. :/
I used this stuff to clean the chrome wire wheels on a '68 Jaguar XKE, by using a small one inch paint brush and just painting it on and around the spokes & hub then after 10 minutes hosed it off. It brought the wheels to like new condition and I received many comments and inquiries on how much I paid for new wheels. It really works.
I give it an A+ because it cleaned my parts and made the metal shine like new. I used a peice of Scotchbrite to scrub my parts after allowing the jelly to do it's thing. Sometimes you have to do another coat and Scotchbrite again. I sometimes use a brass "tooth brush" which is not as abrasive or steel tooth brush. Either way I will sand and prep my parts for paint or polish them a wire wheel and squirt clear on them. Other times I polish some or my parts with buffer wheel so the look like chrome and then squirt some clear. I like some kind of coating to keep my parts rusting making my work last longer. A+
For heavy rust, apply a kinda thick layer then cover with plastic wrap so it won't dry out, then leave it for a few hours or overnight. It also helps if you can knock any scale or loose rust off with a wire brush. If you use a wire wheel in an angle grinder to get most of the rust off, then 5 or 10 minutes is adequate. Otherwise this stuff takes a bit more time to work.
@@DIYMAN does this remove rust or convert it? I some reason want to try it on red lava rock to test out if it converts it to the unoxidized form or just removes oxidized iron
To keep the metal from re-rusting use a good corrosion inhibitor if you don't want to paint it. Blaster Heavy Duty Corrosion Stop Protectant is good. Shake the can then spray it on and wipe it clean. Use it on my old tube radio chassis after taking the rust off with Naval Jelly. Cover up any painted surfaces when spraying it.
I have used paint inhibitor in the past and it worked similar in that it turned the rust into a dark color but I didn't have to do anything other than spray it.
I've gotten excellent results from submerging rusted items (e.g. an old axe head, pitchfork, etc.) into a bucket of household vinegar! Works great and leaves a nice gray finish.
For things that can be submerged nothing beats white vinegar. I have done it many times, on thins that were incredibly rusy. For things you can't submerge this stuff is the best I have found.
I leave this on overnight, but light rust can be dissolved in as little as 20 minutes… it will dissolve heavy rust down to metal! It will NOT remove paint, plastic handles or rubber. I especially love it for automotive frames that are corroded.
naval jelly is essentially phosphoric acid with a thickener to make it into a paste. I have used naval jelly in combination with 85% phosphoric acid (food grade is readily available). It is an excellent rust remover, and does not have the toxicity of oxalic which is also an excellent rust remover.
@@timwhite4288 Oxalic acid is toxic and may cause burns, nausea, severe gastroenteritis and vomiting, shock and convulsions. It is especially toxic when ingested. As little as 5 to 15 grams (71 mg/kg) may be fatal to humans. How well a person does depends on the amount of poison swallowed, how concentrated the poison is, and how quickly treatment was received. The faster a person gets medical help, the better the chance for recovery. Severe damage to the mouth, gastrointestinal tract, or airway may occur and quickly cause death if not treated. Holes (perforations) in the esophagus and stomach may cause serious infections in both the chest and abdominal cavities, which may result in death. Surgery may be needed to repair the perforations.
Naval Jelly, look up the old popular mechanics or mechanix illustrated magazines. There are so many products out there to de-solve or convert rust. My best is still the older school way, electrolytic method.
I have been using naval jelly since 1980 when I had an old rusty set of wheels for a rustier Firebird. Took two applications but all rust was gone so I could paint them. What can I say? At 16 in the 80's, you did whatever you could to get your old POC muscle car looking as good as you could on the cheap. Wish I would have used the naval jelly under the bondo. I bet the body would have lasted a little longer! My indrocution to DIYing. The wheels never rusted, the body fell apart. Royal jelly has been my go to for - my whole life I suppose. It is somewhat acidic so if you are like me and tend to not wear gloves etc., I would make an exception on this one. I have had it splash into my eyes when in a hurry and that did not feel good so would recommend eye protection. No damage to eyes just rinsed them out with an eye washer in a hurry.
Now that I would know what to do with one, if I could find one, it would probably stay in the garage. A C2 or C3 vet would be nice, but I'm thinking something that I can do right, like an early model MR2.
