- The New Wave Toys Replicade X Dragon's Lair cabinet has finally arrived and George is giddy. New Wave Toys has done an awesome job with their Replitronics line. From the New Wave Toys Street Fighter 2, to the New Wave Toys Asteroids machine, and now the New Wave Toys Dragon's Lair cabinet.

I was obsessed with this game in 83/84, especially after I got my hands on a magazine article that had a walk-through that not only laid out the moves, but which rooms were connected to which. Eventually I could breeze through the entire game but it never got old because the animation was so gorgeous. Hopefully I can get this replica before it sells out.
These Replicades are just on another level.

That’s sweet. The price point is fair especially given the work they put in. I would definitely bite if they ran a promotion for $99.99 similar to my street fighter and tempest purchases.

I have always found Dragon's Lair fascinating. I was 13 in 1983. I'm a computer programmer and I understand how it works. Back in the day, a computer could only control a laser disc player but couldn't display the full-motion video itself. In this day and age, you can do it with a tiny replica because the video can be stored on tiny memory chips and the computer actually displays the video directly and you can also have a small hi-resolution screen. Back in the day, handheld games with tiny screens could only have fixed LED's, not full hi-res graphics. You could only make a half-assed handheld Pac-man.

I got this to round out by mini-arcade presentation...I never liked how the game played. But honesty, after having the game to play at my leisure, I kind of fell in love with it.
I was always captivated by it, but I usually died so quickly that I'd shy away from playing because it felt like a waste of money. But with the choice for Unlimited Dirks? Count me in!

Very clear picture for such a small screen. I noticed though at the beginning it seems to be missing the draw bridge scene. My mame version does the same thing!
That unit looks amazing! I was so terrible at this game in the arcade. It was $1 for 3 Dirks so I never got good at it. Thanks for the insight, George!

I think T2 and I went to the same rip-off arcade! That, plus I was already terrible at Dragon's Lair, so that didn't help.
I remember at Great America Parkway, in Santa Clara, the Dragon’s Lair cost 50 cents, but if you got far enough you had to pay 50 cents, to continue the game.

I like your channel guys. 129$ Is cheap. Its sold out almost everywhere and is sure to skyrocket in the collectors market. It's not mass produced like most other mini cades. These are kickstarter backed.

@@georgeofgenxgrownup4500 Dragons Lair is the only one I have but getting the My Arcade Space Invaders for Christmas thanks to the your channel! I've been a console gamer, ,but grew up in the arcade in the early 80's and these "mini cades" are quickly becoming my new passion! I think the replicade cabs are incredible!
I played this game back in 1984 at Chuck E Cheeses, and I played it again on a Sega Saturn in 1996. If you are a fan of this game, $119.99 is a fair price.
That was kinda my thought as well. I still think $99 would be insta-buys for me on the other Replicade units, but $120 makes me think about it a little. I really want the others now that I have this one.

I asked Santa for one. I’m pretty sure one for me is coming. You should do a play thru. One of my favorite arcade games from the 80’s, up there with Atari Star Wars, which I have the Arcade1up of and love. Now they need to do a Tron Replicade!
A playthrough on a mini arcade machine? I'm not sure my fat, sausage fingers are up to it. Totally agree on the Tron Replicade. The only thing I'm not sure about is the trigger button on the controller. :)

Will you also be taking over for the Arcade 1Up Dragon's Lair machine review? We just got a look at it during CES 2021, along side their Killer Instinct and X-Men arcade units (of course, they couldn't get the X-Men machine to have six players, so it looks like it will be the 4 player rom).
We're looking into it, Dragon Knight. It's a pricey purchase for us but if our fund-raising over the next few weeks pans out, George will likely be the man!
Had mine for about a week now and IMO this thing should be $199-249 without question.
We've had at least that much fun value out of it! Is this your first from New Wave?

@@georgeofgenxgrownup4500 My arcade and Quarter Arcades by Numskull are available here. Arcade 1up is slowly getting over here too. Prices are 10-15% higher than in the States though. It is a true renaissance of the arcades. Happy days for all us old school gamers.

On Arcade 1up there are apparently lip sync issues. Is this a thing on this version of the game? It’s notable when the princess is talking about getting the key from the dragon.

George if it’s me I would stay with the 1.6 scale with 1.4 scale these cabinets work great for me because of lemonade space I have in my apartment I love ❤️ these arcade cabinets I have the Ms. Pac-Man counter cade 40’th anniversary and the Galaga the 1.4 scale I’m waiting on 1.6 scale of Q Bert cabinet I love ❤️ these games.
I played Dragon's Lair a few times back in the day, but I could never get the hang of the controls. (THE DUDE WON'T JUMP DANGIT!) It was also too expensive for this poor boy! 🤣

I admit, I spent WAY too much on this game in 1983, but I couldn't help myself. Tron isn't a bad choice either. SO, do you think you'll try to grab one of these?

A year later and they're still not available. I sent New Wave an email asking if they were going to restock them and they did say they said they're "Currently discussing offering a new variant edition of Dragon's Lair, in the future (2023-2024)" so I'm not holding my breath. However, I just got a laser cutter / engraver so I might shrink down the cabinet dimensions and make my own mini version using some thin plywood, a RetroPie, Daphne emulator and use ISO images of all three games from my 20th anniversary DVD box set. Btw, anyone know where I can find a mini joystick and buttons?
I wouldn't hold my breath. New Wave doesn't have a record of re-releases.

Btw, I found a dxf file for a D.L. cabinet some mini 5 way navigational joysticks and tactical buttons so I will be building my own mini D.L. but with D.L. 2 and Space Ace.

I can't imagine they're going to license out their IPs to a third party, but I'm holding out hope that they decide to enter the market themselves with some hyper-accurate scale cabinets.
I like it / but i want it to have Space Ace in it / or even better add the Dragons Lair trilogy / after all we paying a premium for the unit / i will wait until it comes out
The Space Ace units were already on sale for pre-order last year. I have 2 on the way. You should be able to pick one up when they get to the New Wave warehouse, hopefully within the next month or so.
