Only bought the marvel vs capcom machine, the one with the special edition art, because that was the art I was planning on using for the sides of the custom build arcade I was planning, thought I would save a couple bucks by Frankenstein-ing it together with my plans. Turns out it was still a little too small for my six foot tall self😂 should’ve read the measurements more carefully I guess but I’ve still made it work.
Nevertheless your video was quite enjoyable, well reasoned and structured, a good watch. Thumbs up from me

Thanks, and that's EXACTLY the point I'm trying to make when people argue about modding a 1up... it's still just too small and flimsy no matter what you put inside it. You could have 1000s of games and the best controls but it's still a tiny poorly made cabinet. You just got pinned 👍

Born in 74. I own 2 cabs, ATM pinball, and 2 Partycades. While I agree with your points, I have no complaints. My cave looks amazing, my friends love playing them, as do I. Straight out of the box. I don't feel the need to upgrade. It just fills my need for some nostalgic fun, when I need that need filled, at a fraction of the price. Although I should point out, that I've never paid close to full price. Again, all of your points are completely valid, and you do address myself, as a type, I just thought I'd give my two cents on the subject.

The kool-aid wore off when they trippled the prices and the quality took a massive dive. The controls are cheap, the speakers are garbage, they're still using 14 inch displays when they should be at a 19 inch standard by now. If I'm paying $800/$900 for a 3/4 cabinet, it should be worth the $900. But, the quality has taken such a dive, I'm not interested in buying them anymore. I'm saving up for a legends ultimate, a1up by now should have opened a store front (since Gen 3 + have a micro SD card port) and started selling just the games to add to your cabinet instead of paying $800 for 2-5 games on 1 cabinet.

I picked up a Galaga and Final Fight from Walmart for $50 each at the start of Covid. Later that summer, I got a Street Fighter 2 Cocktail version for $150 from Costco (this was the display unit so it was "open box" but complete and working). I'd like to pick up a T2, Killer Instinct, or Simpsons, but not for the prices they are asking. Keep your eyes out for deals, don't pay full price.

Yeah for those prices for sure worth it.... We got three kids 9, 6 and 4 so these seem like a decent idea.... I just recently came across them while looking at other emulators and similar things. The kids don't really get to play the modern games so much but I could see having one of the multi game emulator set ups for a family game night now and then... and now I'm in a rabbit hole and there are the ubiquitous warring factions apparently. I didn't know there were knockoff arcade loyalists... We really have too much time on our hands I think. We don't need to be passionately attached to every little thing.... Make a mame cab. If that isn't good enough for you then the arcade 1up is going to fail you in the end. You are trying to get the feeling of having an arcade and 1up cabs aren't going to scratch that itch. You are just buying into things that you will end up either ignoring or selling at a huge loss. I've owned defender and star wars games a couple years now. There are 12 in 1, and 3 in 1 games. I made 4 inch risers to go under the 1up risers. They look more realistic and easier to play, love them. I own a huge heavy original defender cabinet that doesn't work. These hit the spot for nostalgic game play, lightweight and not space eaters. Clean working Defender can cost upwards of $1,800 and you need lot of help moving it for ONE game.

  • @Jay_J
    @Jay_J ปีที่แล้ว +27

Keep in mind, the 3/4 scale is designed for home use, not too heavy, not too large, and more reliable than old school arcades. I agree the buttons and joysticks aren't the best. I swapped mine for Sanwa's. It's also possible to mod these, but the idea is to provide a multi-cade with authentic looking artwork and style, at a fraction of the cost of buying a 40 year old real arcade, even if the prices have basically doubled since they launched in 2018. Now as for that.... That's another issue altogether! Greed and lack of listening to their fan/install base

Agree with size, home use comments
Collecting vintage Golden Age CRT arcade games is a big undertaking, a niche of a niche.
Weight, size and tech maintenance are too much for most people, same for full size pinball machines. So it's a hobby for dedicated tech oriented types, like guys who have been doing diy PCs or similar for years, including software, is and hardware maintenance.
1up and atgames are targeted at the average consumer, with cost and components to match the market.
Imo, it's a Good Thing the market is flooded with 1ups and similar,. Been seeing many on the craigslists and offerups of the world.
This means lots of cabs and parts for collectors and diyets who want a base to mod from.
A lot of us don't have or want a full woodworking shop with CNC machine to make a good looking cabinet.
So it's finished flatpacks or used 1ups as a base.
      It's all good

I now have a second daughter who's 4 and she loves smacking around on it too. I spent $200 on the cab and about $250 on everything I've done to it since the initial purchase. I still check in to see if there are any other ones that make sense for me to make space for but so far I've pulled the trigger on none of them. I just haven't had a compelling reason to get any of the other offerings from them. Now that any of the cabinets even on sale still run $300+ I don't think that will change for me anytime soon. The main reason people like A1Up is that you can just turn it on a play. There is something said about that.
People say just get the actual arcade. You going to rent that truck for me and then help me move it in my home? Let alone the maintenance that nobody talks about with a purchase like that, particularly with CRT's and how dangerous those can be.
Well then go to a vendor that builds multicades and buy that. Ok...still talking about 1000's of dollars for one that has all the controls and computer in there. And if it is less, then have to provide a monitor, computer and then start dealing with finding roms and emulators. Most poeple do not want to deal with a computer or raspberry pi for hours editing config files and adjusting setting just to get that extra frame dialed in so you can perform that Street Fighter move 1ms quicker.
They just want to take the hour to build it, turn it on and play.
I understand that this may not be for some people. I also understand that some of the things A1UP has done has turned them off to the product. But there is something to be said about just turning it on and playing the game.
Are there some issues? Yes...not going to lie about this, but for some it is more of an issue than others. The online play for NFL Blitz for example. Should online have been out when the cab was released. Yes. However, some do not care because they do not use online and if they do, they will wait until it is available. Does this mean A1UP should have delayed online? No...NFL Blitz, and MVC2 were major snafu's as far as releases, but there are a number of buyers who do not think this is a big issue. Some weigh the faults higher than others and purchase accordingly.
As for people lying...this is done on both sides of the debate. Take the wood quality issue. Even in the response in this chat, I hear people say it is 1/4" thick...it is particle board, which is not true. 1/2 MDF...may not be the quality MDF that you buy in Home Depot...but MDF. But people will still lie about it.
At any rate, I will probably be roasted for this or be called an A1UP fanboy...and so be it...I do not care...at end of the day it is what you enjoy. If not yours, or anyone else's, cup of tea, fully understand that.
A1UP has fumbled and hope they make it right. I like the products and will continue to buy.

I bought an Arcade1up back when they first came out in September 2018 and EVERYONE new they were cheap, cookie cutter shape toys but that didn't matter because you can upgrade any parts you wanted and still came out cheaper than buying a real arcade or multicade. That created a huge boom for the arcade aftermarket.
Today there are different shapes and sizes of cabinets, ever so slightly better parts, light up marquees, more powerful hardware to run more games, WIFI and many other things which resulted in Arcade1up pricing themselves out of a market they created.

There sure are a lot of people taking shots at Arcade 1Up! In their defense- I have two Partycades (Ms Pac Man 40th and Defender) and for the price I paid I have no complaints. The form factor is great if you have limited space. I passed on the 3/4 size cabs mainly because like you said, you have to play them hunched over. But they do tell you the measurements of them so it shouldn’t be a surprise. Some commenters saying they’re made for kids, is that a bad thing? The company is targeting people who maybe don’t have the skills/resources to build or buy a “real” cab, so its a gateway for someone curious to ‘dip their toe”. If there are quality control issues then thats a legit complaint but the two I have haven’t given me any problems so far🤞🏼

I opted for rebuilding a true vintage arcade cabinet and put a multi-game card in it, but everything else is truly vintage with well built buttons and controls. I can revert it back to original setup with only a little bit of detaching, and feel I have something that can last another 40 years. The 1up arcade cabinets look like the will fall apart after 6 months.

I was not about to pay $300 for a particle board box and tiny monitor but they do look nice as furniture that occasionally get played. I built a gaming PC and also built a digital pinball machine that get played way more than the 1ups. I did have to laugh when you called them toys though as to me, all these things are toys including the old original arcade cabinets I used to feed quarters to back in the late 70s and early 80s. All of this 'tech' are just toys. It just depends on how much you want to pay for those toys.

It's just managing expectations. If you are looking for a full blown arcade machine these aren't that. I have two. I enjoy them both and haven't had any issues (so far). I like the game mix, the size (don't want to be lugging some oversized machine around nor dedicate that much space to them), and just the nostalgic experience playing these games in an arcade like manner. For me, they look cool too. Both bought on sale so price was fair. Price point is a concern but what product nowadays isn't that true? Inflation is real and I'm sure A1Up isn't immune to its effects. Playability, quality, and customer service should always be something they try to improve. Fair reviews of their products with constructive criticism helps in my opinion so because of that I'd hate to see you walk away from reviewing A1Ups all together. People who have interest in nostalgic games will buy A1Ups because people like me appreciate their form and fit. I'd personally hate to see a company like A1Up just disappear. I'd rather see them grow and improve. They have brought a lot of these classics back into mainstream and for me, that's pretty cool.

I've always thought of the Arcade 1up as a toy for kids. But even then they are much more expensive than they ought to be and you are lucky if you get only a few games. For a minute I thought about picking one up on craigslist and making a cheap MAME out of it but the quality of the controls and the displays are sub-par and I would end up replacing everything anyway. I totally understand the nostalgia though and people wanting to have that arcade experience. I think these fill a void for people wanting that nostalgia but don't want to know or care about a full-mame cabinet. I think any gaming enthusiast who has played around with emulation and the potential will see these as a toy and nothing else.

So $600 is pretty cheap for a full size arcade machine, but I'd consider getting a full size MK, or Big Blue or, Dynamo Cab, or really any cab, and then put in a MiSTer, and you have a SOLID Arcade machine, on FPGA, with authentic buttons, and you can still get all the car speakers, and lights, and you don't end up with some kind of compromise. But this is the fallacy that $600 is a bargain... if you have 1x 1up, and are thinking about a second, stop and think about what you really want. And understand that you get what you pay for.

Then I discovered the AtGames Legends Ultimate. Bought one of those and while it’s not perfect, I’m glad I didn’t get sucked in to a A1UP purchase. Don’t get me wrong, the LU isn’t perfect but I’m pretty happy with it and know it was a better purchase than the SF2 cabinet I wanted.

I too have given them props in the past for regenerating interest in Arcade stuff in general . Point of note that for Arcade games a decent sized ips monitor running Mame on PC hardware with some serious CRT emulation (HLSL) is easily the best way to play these games short of playing an original machine ( or perhaps an FPGA version of a game )

I collected full size arcades in the early 2000s when it wasn't popular and moved with them and they're heavy beasts and I frankly love that arcade one up came around.... Even with the issues they're way less finicky than a "actual" vintage arcade. And they weigh a whole lot less. I can move them around by myself. They were wobbly until I screwed the risers into the arcade and put a little rubber feet on each of them. Plus I was able to sell all those old vintage arcades for way more than I originally bought them. It all depends on what you want. Having to put quality parts in after the fact when you can get a quality pre-made cab or DIY for the cost just defeats the purpose. You can only put out the same games so much before people take notice along with the huge quality issues in regards to functionality. Great video man. This is also someone who has five of their games and I won't be buying any more from them for the aforementioned reasons and for taking advantage of people not realizing they're getting a full game with the last two titles. It was around $500 bucks for that rare Pac Plus artwork cab. It has a lit marquee, plus a lit area under the cp, and a riser. He played it for awhile and then was totally bored with it. I have a Full size X-arcade machine with a true Wells Gardner CRT monitor in it. You can hookup a pc or just about any console to it! It has the famous TANKSTICK that has 2 full player layouts, plus the trackball. I have been into OG Xbox mods since 2016. I have many different builds and they work perfect on the X-arcade. The one Coinops 8 Massive set has over 9k Arcade & Console games to play through in one huge list! All u need is the correct adapter per a console U want to play! Multicade FULLSIZE is the way to go! These things are truly Toys and I agree the price is getting way over the top. I realize the X-arcade with CRT is now harder to find, but other companies are all over multicade builds and I have several people in PA alone that build Cabs for sell on Marketplace. A good Jamma (tons of multi boards) or even a Raspberry Pi build will keep u happy over a small toy.

Most of these games are available on the Microsoft/Xbox and PSX store to play on your TV and if you want collector authenticity that won't break the bank, I highly recommend New Wave Toys 1/6 scale Replicade series. They produce retrocade arcade machines at 1/6 scale with high quality detail and materials faithful to the original for a reasonable price and won't take up an entire living space.

So that price for the Mega is a no go but the knowledge of building one yourself just take some reading to do. I forgot , the real arcade cabinets are getting expensive now , a few years I could of gotten a Mortal Kombat Arcade in near mint for 1500 now there going for 5000. It just remind me of the crypto video card boom. Great Video.

I just got 2 first gen 1up's for free. I look at it as a fun project that i can personalize and play with my kid. There's no way i'd pay full price for these things. And yes, even the riser these things come with are too short! I shouldn't have to build a riser to attach the original riser!

I dont have space for real arcades machines nor do I have the expertise to work on them. Arcade1up is really the only option. I don't mind modding as it's a hobby in itself.

Honest opinion. I bought a final fight for 200 bucks back in 2020 or 2021 and modded it through arcade mod up? I think was the company for about 400 bucks. It has a raspberry pie with about 1000 games. Lighted marquee and buttons. Honestly the machine has been pretty good with minimal use. For 600 bucks total I think it is a pretty good deal.

Arcade 1Up is built for the Walmart crowd, not the enthusiasts, and anyone reviewing them for enthusiasts saying "mod this mod that" are just ... wrong. This is why I built my own arcade machine that stands 6' tall with a 27" monitor and Sanwa sticks. In my opinion if you're buying an Arcade 1Up it's for your 8 year old and you should expect him to break it in under a year.

I bought all of mine when they dropped to around $200 a piece. They're just cheap toys for the kids to play on. I have two AtGames Ultimate machines that I play more. One with One SaUCE. I bought those on sale as well. I feel like I've gotten my money's worth at the cheaper price.

I ended up just buying a gen 1 street fighter for 280 new and putting a raspberry pi in mine. With the pi, hdmi converter and everything I bought I think it only costed around $400
This will scratch my itch until I buy a shell from another company like game room solutions in the future.

I stayed at a Virbo this summer that had an Arcade 1Up. I tried it out and was not impressed. Very cheap feeling buttons, the machines moved like crazy whenever I moved the joystick, the whole machine was too small. I love arcade games and grew up with an authentic Mario Bros. arcade machine in my basement for many years, but I'm perfectly fine playing them on my Nintendo Switch or via emulators on my PC. In fact, I'd be ok with a cabinet modded to play numerous titles. Real arcade cabinets I understand are not feasible for most people. They are too big, too bulky, too expensive and take too much time to maintain, especially as parts become harder and harder to find. But I'm fine playing arcade games on my Switch or PC.

I think it's ok if you don't have space for a full size cabinet or nostalgia for 1 particular game. If you have space for 2 or like more than one game. I see no reason to get one. I have no skills and built a full size cabinet over a couple weekends. it plays thousands of games I only have about 1200 in it. I still need to get side art/marquee done. Worst case scenario 250-300 bucks tops.

great video I just set all mine on fire 🤣🤣🤣 But seriously down to 3 sold 2 and just tossed 2 in trash and saved screens and converting one to one player and putting in rp4 with plenty of arcade games. New mortal kombat very disappointing with information about screen and info about mvc2 and and nfl blitz and tron sticks. So I hear you brother. Don't know why someone would get so wrapped up just making arcade 1up videos either🤣.

Granted I only was out of pocket 60 bucks and a 10 dollar speaker from 5 below. I can’t speak for the stand ups . But the nba jam countercade I got since it was cheap for the kid this Xmas . Since he living with his biological “father” at the moment. Im just hooking it up so he’ll see it when he comes in. So it’s in our dining room atm and me and his mother played it for a decent bit. If I come across more at this size for 120 or so for a game I would enjoy. I’d be willing to purchase. The full size 3/4 cabs. Man at those prices with 3 kids at times in the house and 2 dogs there just ain’t the space for it. Or feel that kind of expense is justifiable in most houses at this time.
    So there’s a positive and a negative
