That movie poster / postcard is based on the trade show poster they printed and had on display next to the game when it was introduced to the distributors in 1983. The level of history geek-ery is quite insane with NWT.

I'm hoping that since FF was made by the same team that made Ms. Pac Man, that they'll reach out and license Ms. Pac Man for a 1/16. I noticed that Namco didn't include that game in their new pixel blaster release. Namco lost a court case which showed they were using GCC's code in their re-releases vs pay more royalties. So they dropped it. It'd be nice for NWT to pick up the ball (and I've interviewed the co-founder if they want the contact info - he reviewed a summary of his works for this inclusion from a zine a few years ago, and added to it personally - can't include it here because someone turned off HTML links - glaring at OP :)

Pdubs I always appreciate the honesty you exhibit in all your video game journalism. I especially enjoyed the audio sync issues that you hinted on from another similar released product. This is the care and attention that 1up should have given this classic. The prices they charge now, us consumers should expect nothing less. The lack of a fix really turned me off despite that it is a pretty good product even with the flaws. As far as new wave toys if they ever did 3/4 scale machines they would force the competition to up their game.
I purchased four of the original DL and one each of the overhauls and each space ace that is coming soon. I plan on purchasing a missile command tonight. Keep up the great work Patrick. I may part with a couple but have not been able to do so at this point. Regards, SJ

Did you notice the cheat or help setting was missing? I gave my original Dragon's Lair machine to my brother but thought I remembered that option. Meaning, it would flash the area you had to move or when to push the sword button. Not just the water and mechanical horse notifications. It was on all levels.
PS: I wish they would make a Lucie box for these. I display more than play, like you, and the box would help manage dust.

1000% agree they should dip their toes in the 3/4 market. If they were on the level of these 1/6th scales, I’d pay a little more for that.

I don't want them to scale up. This size is perfect. Plug it into an HDTV and use a usb controller if you need larger action otherwise these are portable perfection that anyone who remembers the Coleco portables would have (and still do) drool for.
It's still fun to imagine showing this to a 1983 version of myself who thought the Pac Man LED games were hot-shit. In the back of my mind, even knowing all the stuff in these new boxes is pretty off-the-shelf in components, I'm still amazed.
Disclaimer : I own a full-size working DL with functioning LDV1000 - the original late-model LD player which I acquired from a gentleman who (himself) bought a palate of the players in San Diego - from Cinematronics at auction - when they turned into Leeland Games. I purchased 2 replacement players over the years, and it's on the last one. Now that he's passed away - I'll have to either find a bridge card or convert it to solid-state when the last 40 year old LD player fails. (The last known retired Pioneer tech who could refurb these models in Oregon also has passed away)
More and more - I prefer the Replicade version, if only because I can pick it up.

Get on the mailing list - NWT is great at giving you a heads-up on when they will actually go for sale the day of or before to try to beat the scalpers. I got my DL OE because I wasn't sure I wanted one during pre-order (I got the previous ver and got the Space Ace pre-order instead), but they sent an email on when to buy on the 9th. (they even mentioned the time zone and to 'set your alarm clock'). If you want to get them before they sell out in 4 hours or less, get on that email list via the link on their store-page.
Now we just need DL2 'Time Zone' (which is a stupid name since most of the game has nothing to do with time travel as most of it takes place in fictional / mythology - that bugged me nearly as much as the extra-item collection as well as the insane response time(s) which were even harder than Space Ace).

The detail in the Replicades are simply incredible but I just can’t justify the price at $170. But $99 ($80 with promo code) for the Zoltar machine is a no brainer. I can’t wait to get it and to see what other animatronics they have in the pipeline.

@@ThorKCade I thought of doing that too - but my final reason (or rationalization) was to have a backup DL (in addition to my first release one) in case of fire or theft. It went on sale Feb 9 at 3pm PST. It sold out in less than 4 hours. The red trim sold out in less than 2. Considering the resale is 3 to 5X (depending when you bought it - pre-sale or release) it's not hard to see why. They're instant 500% ROI collectables. I'd say they're better than the fullsize arcade games as the CP overlays don't peel off over time / wear. Even new repro overlays start to crack and shed after 5 years or so on the full-size cabinets (starting up near the monitor smoked plex shield).
Um, ya I own a full-size cab - I can bore the tears out of anyone on how I've kept that thing working. I've replaced the cab-wood that was water-damaged at the base, with original wood from the neighbor of Steve Wozniak who purchased his Dragon's Lair when the Apple co-founder sold off his man-cave - which was a literal faux-rock cave in his first mansion (no joke - his neighbor had the most insane LaserDisc game collection in Los Gatos (including the only Simutec 'Cube Quest' in the country) and drove a DMC-12 - envious? oh, a tad!) who was upgrading his DL into a fresh repro-wood shell, the header translite that was 3D printed at NVidia's fab shop to hang the repro header graphics on, getting original players from ancient backstock sources - and bla bla bla more (even found an original coin-box from a barn in Kansas).
Thanks to these new minis I'm downsizing and selling off a (meager by most collectors in Silicon Valley (one filled his house in Mountain View with enough cabs and pinball machines that he'd have to reset the home circuit breakers if too many pinballs were played at house parties (those things suck amps like crazy) home arcade (except for my Pac Man and DK machine - the DK machine took 4 months to repaint and restore to museum quality) as I look to hit the road literally. These minis fit better in a 45 foot motorcoach than a fridge size classic. The real trick is finding a home for people to play a pseudo-holographic Time Traveler arcade game. I have 1 of 5 in existence, and I'm looking to place it in either a massive retro arcade in PHX or a museum in LA (check my profile channel for video on that work of art from my own man-cave before it went into storage).

Fun fact on those Phillips players (the white one you mentioned) - they all died in less than a year on location and were replaced with the LDV1000 shown in this video. There's also a huge difference in screen-seek in the arcade versions with minor screen-blanks being VERY long. There was also a score-rollup during track-seek which doesn't happen with the 1000s (the LED display score is just 'tallied' instantly - it doesn't scroll like an insane odometer). Space Ace benefited from not only having a better player (For the day) but also a track layout which didn't require huge throws between gameplay and 'dying'. Atari and Firefox still wins for the craziest but most seamless disc formatting which all but eliminated pauses in play (all of these pauses were due to frame buffers and the memory to drive them costing a fortune so they were never used - heck, memory even in the early 90s cost as much as a laser disk player for a mere 8 megs - not gigs - megs).
Star Rider from Williams wins for having the most interactivity by using a compressed source that would then be pan-and-scanned with digital overlays (insanely hard to find one of those still working in one form of another - but they were a hoot back in the day).
Special mention for NFL football from Bally Midway. Those 'laser disc' games weren't lasers at all. They used interactive CED RCA players aka : needles in grooves. The wear time was significant so if the game got janky you could flip the disc to the other side and use that for a longer time. Terrible idea.

@@mgabrysSF interesting side notes. I’m guessing you either worked on these or followed them close? Does Sega CD count or are you only look at laser disc systems? I thought Sonic was special. Such a different sound than any sonic game.

@@MichaelSmith-fd9ec Never worked on them (at the source - worked on them plenty at home) but was fascinated by them (and owned a few over the decades). A number of arcades also allowed me to see the various settings and the disc detached from the logic board (As well as discovering a massive glitch in Thayers' Quest - see below). The 'Dragon's Lair Project' is a great resource too - although they just had their forums wiped due to an ISP disaster losing lots of reference material and testimonies in the process. Sega CD was interesting for the time, but sub-par in terms of quality due to the compression etc. Still made a home for a lot of Laser-projects that were shelved (until the last laser--resurgence in the early 90s).
*Thayer's Quest was a conversion kit that used Halcyon's / RDI's aborted home system, and as a kit - they missed some grounding paths via the wiring harness to the control board(s). The upshot was you could static-shock a mounting screw on the speaker assembly (by shuffling over the arcade carpet and touching a quarter to said-screw) and cause the credit register to null. That meant after your timed game ran out - it would rollover to 99 minutes (and then again after those minutes ran out -meaning you played forever on one credit). It was that discovery (reported to the arcade owner who promptly dropped his jaw) that allowed me to look inside the cabs and later get technical manuals on many laser games of the time,.
We used to shock machines all the time in the early 80s to force a machine reset and wipe the high-score before playing. Back in the mid 70s - machines were so poorly grounded we could shock free games from Pong Machines and the like.

How in the world can you play something that small?
I know there is a niche market for these things, but you can't even see the screen on them.

    • @PDubsArcadeLoft
      @PDubsArcadeLoft  ปีที่แล้ว

Well if the baseball blocks the laser you'll be able to shrink down enough to play it. Yes that is a film reference

Have you seen one in person? It's easily playable at that size. The screen is plenty big and is bright, sharp and clear from all angles. They really do use a quality screen for these things. I was actaully a little surpised at just how well it plays. You have the option of attaching an external controller and hooking it up to a larger screen as well. I thought I would end up doing that to make it easier to play, but found I didn't even need to.
