Cheap high quality headsets is what we need for VR to go mainstream. Hopefully santa Cruz with 6dof will be cheapish standalone VR like the go, amazing review Blunty !
Very helpful. I was looking for a complete explanation of what it actually did. Was nice to see it completely explained and then you demonstrated the apps. Even more helpful than the tech guys! Thanks.
This is my first VR experience since I bought a Merge VR headset attached to an iPhone over 2 years ago. I got bored of that in days and completely forgot about VR until I saw the Black Friday commercials for the Oculus Go. I really like this Oculus Go a lot. It was an impulse buy and I’m glad I bought it.
I bought one. He hit the nail on the head. The games are meh, take the best wii shovel ware and thats what you got for games. Everything else about it is cool though (netflix, youtube, porn, 360 videos, etc). For sure worth $200 if you are looking for a TV or something to watch and enjoy videos with. You can actually read text pretty good on this too, so it's not bad to browse. It's basically a roku strapped to your face, I recommend it.
Bought one, should be arriving tomorrow. No more taking phone out of case .. fiddling with getting it into the gear ... then back to the case again. Can´t wait.
I remember watching the trailers for it seeing the wireless headsets thinking "pfft, they got it all wrong, that won't ever happen," now I think to myself "oh"
They really hit a sweet spot there. The gear vr is easily the best mobile based vr headset, and the freedom from cables and mobility was always a big big bonus. I have used gear vrs for watching movies during plane flights and traveling in general, and that is still pretty much the killer app for mobile vr at this point. Along comes the oculus go and removes the one big disadvantage, the fiddling with your phone and headphones and blah... That always inserted a certain "do I really want to use it right now" threshold that is now completely gone. This must not be underestimated. It's a big deal. Same for the surprisingly good speakers. When you show vr to others, even that was always one step too many for some. Also gone now. I showed this around to some friends and the difference was remarkable. I think they have a winner here. It's super accessible, relatively cheap vr, and that will do a lot of good for vr in general. And it's amazing to see how the oculus app stores leaves the Google equivalent in the dust. Who would have thought. John Carmack is probably the deciding factor here. I doubt mobile vr would be anywhere near this without him.
Dude, this video popped up in my recommended. I remember watching this several years ago and deciding I'd buy an Oculus Go. Now I own 2 quest 2s, a Gear VR, an Oculus Go, and my collection keeps on coming.
Nice work on being informative. I just managed to get a hold of used one on a discount. Apparently the novelty of the item wore of on the original purchaser. It will arrive in a few days so I wanted a bit of a preview on what to expect. This device could only have gotten better with updates during the eleven months since you posted this. Thank you for putting this together.
I've ordered one to watch Netflix and YT while traveling. It's my first vr headset and I can't wait for it to arrive. I'll upgrade once the new gen of PC headsets come out.
HG Wells Unfortunately, because digital distribution platforms like Steam, Play Store and Apple store are how most people get software, the "breakthrough" porn app may never happen because they're expressly forbidden on all those nanny platforma.
To the people asking if you can connect it to a PC, and play games like VR Chat just get a Windows Mixed Reality headset. For around the same price it's a really good deal if you're looking for the full virtual reality experience without spending $400 on a Rift.
Had the HTC Vive for around 4 months, used it about 6 times. Too much to set up and too restrictive. Just ordered one of these for simple and tether free use. Sold my Vive.
As someone who REALLY wants to get into VR but can't due to price, I really want to get an Oculus Go. It's more affordable than a headset and works fine enough for me. I'll probably be using it more for basic games and private anime watching. Also, I have a Plex server and am dying to try out their new Plex VR client app, which is available for the Go. I'd love to be able to watch movies I never got to see in theaters on the big screen. Plus, I like the self-contained aspect of it. It means I don't have to fill my phone with VR stuff, I can just put it all on the Go. And I don't have to have a real nice phone either. I want to get a nicer phone, but if I wanted I could just get a Go and still use my shitty $100 phone as my daily driver. If I get one of these, I'll hold off on getting a serious VR rig for a while. I'll settle on a nice midrange gaming laptop or maybe just a somewhat-decent laptop with a Thunderbolt GPU dock. Something that plays games well in 1080p, I don't need a super crazy setup.
Seriously, its well worth the asking price. For the first time ever, i tried the bigscreen beta yesterday, and while it is still a bit bugged, the experience was nothing short of amazing. It was like being in my own private cinema, seriously! And if i wanted to, i could join other people and chat with them while watching a movie. It is an incredible experience for just 199. I mean, most phones cost more.
Nice review. One thing. You talk about the "niche" it fills. But if that niche is the "non-tech heads" as you say, then that might be way more people than the "big boy" VR owners. Making those the niche. ;-)
@@BluntyTV "denoting or relating to products, services, or interests that appeal to a small, specialized section of the population." - so surely desiv has a point?
The one thing I want to know is can it handle 5K 360-degree video? No TH-camr so far seems to be able to answer this question properly for me. I know it can handle 4K and that it can't handle 6K and 8K (it just shows black) from just reading articles, but I still haven't been able to find out from anyone about 5K.
I'm not positive since I haven't tried it myself.. But I've heard you can hold down the Volume buttons during the initial setup, to skip the cell phone wifi setup, and to force wifi to be setup from within the headset itself, rather than using a phone. So yeah, not positive, but at least there might be an alternative method.
This is true... though reports from people who HAVE done it seem to indicate that it’s less than ideal, and can lead onsistant connections. Probably why the “feature” isn’t publicised. It’s not ready.
Ah, that makes sense. Hopefully they'll keep improving features like that. Plus, IMO there's good room for improvement in their UI/software side too. They missed a few key opportunities, that will no doubt be added at a later date. Another potential future-feature, since you mentioned you wanted replacement straps. Good news, I think the straps can actually be completely removed from the headset at their pivot joint. The manual even tells you how to re-seat them, if they pop out. This means it's possible someone could make a ridged strap system for it, that could be easily swapped in. Which is tempting enough that I might try 3d printing my own. heh
Great review, to tell you the truth I wasn’t even thinking about any VR setup, I’m not a big gamer or anything like that. But the Oculus Go is interesting and affordable. Thank You.
What? There's no "before and now"... My opinion as stated here, on this now I've got it in hand, is EXACTLY in line with what I predicted in my preview. Good, not great, and compromised by the limited feature set, especially the 3DOF.
Oculus go is a great appetizer for VR! it's easy it's fun to use - it's a true on the go VR headset great for trave - the first time I've actually wanted to put on a headset and actually want to watch a movie,! 🤔😁
Another Well done Review of the Oculus Go, Blunty :-). Thank-You so much for your energy, wit,and honesty to show what it's like to own a Oculus Go. I've seen many reviews and they talk about about it only and you see it. You talk and show it running , that is your advantage.
What's the game with the gun strapped to your face? I've already gotten used to markers strapped to my face in VR Chat with a Google Cardboard, so that shouldn't be a stretch.
I wonder if GearVR version of the Riftcat app is compatible with this and how it would fare in Stream VR with some separate VR controllers like Nolo or or the PSMoveService stuff.
Comparing the price of the Oculus Go against a Lenovo-made Mixed-Reality Headset on Amazon, there's about $65 USD difference for me to go from the self-contained Go to the full-fat MRH, $50 difference in item price and about $15 difference in shipping. So for me at least it'll be a long hard think about do I get the more powerful but tethered MRH for just shy of $290 USD (around $402 AUD currently) to experience the power my main gaming rig can provide or get the less powerful but more freedom providing Go for just shy of $225 USD (about $312 AUD) and be able to watch stuff like Netflix uninterrupted around the house.
Ok, things do look good overall, but the one bit of information I haven't been able to find out.... I get that this doesn't have to connect to a PC. But CAN it? Can it act as a screencast/miracast receiver, for example? Without being able to connect to an actual computer.... it seems..... pretty limited. Two hundred seems like a lot for a movie viewer, even if it's a reasonably nice one. Let me screencast from my PC and I'm more interested.....
BigScreen is the app for that. You can view your desktop on bigscreen and even play games with controller. I hadn't done that, but would be interesting to know how it's works.
Tomb raider (a tie in promo for the new movie) I'd BARELY call it a game. There's one puzzle, the rest is just point and walk till you find the "treasure" (which is the movie trailer 🙄)... it does look nice though.
Christopher Gibbons Seems they basically did; just meet up with a cheap Chinese mobile manufacturer, who's using Samsung panels anyway and Bob's your auntie.
I will stick with my $199 Lenovo Explorer Mixed Reality Headset I got December 13th from Microsoft.Com yes you have to have a computer, but light years better and cost the same price.
It's not on the storefront yet... but there is a gearVR minecraft app, and this can run anything GearVR does... so I'd have to assume it's only a matter of time.
I currently have a oculus rift but i really want to give this thing a try. I would say this could be a life saver for a plane or car trip!

Frenchpet does the netflix app have a cinema scene?
I was deep asleep. It’s 4am here in the east of the USA. I had to watch asap after seeing the notification! -chill out
Same, i went to get a cup of water before going back to sleep and saw this lol gn man

Love your in depth content! Thanks for the lovely VR coverage.
Lol most people I mention VR to ask about porn. I think it's the killer app everyone is waiting for
I don't blame them
You would be surprised how often porn drives a tech. That's why VHS beat over beta, and Blueray over HD-DVD (Among a few other things)
HG Wells Unfortunately, because digital distribution platforms like Steam, Play Store and Apple store are how most people get software, the "breakthrough" porn app may never happen because they're expressly forbidden on all those nanny platforma.

Go also known as the convenient gear vr
Looks like there is a Xiaomi logo on the side of this HMD. Collab between Oculus and a chinese brand?
Tom Blums Yes
It really does looks like a MiVR with some of the design choices especially the color.
Bluntly what shooting game were you playing right before you took off the headset to see if you had the classic headset ring on your face... lol
Honestly a great and thorough video

I highly recommend you get the Go. I am a Rift user and was surprised just how awesome this thing is! It's perfect for getting into VR.

dude if you can get a gaming laptop, GET WINDOWS MR!!!!!
Acer, HP, Lenovo - those are all under $250, 1440 x 1440, 6dof headset and 6dof controllers. That is the _full_ experience
ericbazinga "private anime"...hmmm

Kip
Coming soon to Australian stores for AU$499. :p
Rediulous price.
Can't ya just get one from us?
Well its still 239$ on the oculus website so I dont know where you're going
Finally a man of culture
Blunty!!! You didn’t savor the PEELIES!!!
I like how before, he was very skeptical and telling us to kinda wait for anything new. And now he has decided it is actually really good.

Do you still use it? Is it good?
Oculus go is a great appetizer for VR! it's easy it's fun to use - it's a true on the go VR headset great for trave - the first time I've actually wanted to put on a headset and actually want to watch a movie,! 🤔😁

Great bit of kit, just wish it would work with my DJI Mavic
Well, well, well . . . I migth buy this :o . .. no I just need to finish the video :D
Great review...can I ask what software you use for your video editing?
For passive experiences and quick games I'll just use my cardboard and 4k phone screen. You have piqued my interest about windows mixed vr though.

Does it allow usb to go? A small 128gb Dongle could solve the storage problem for less than 50 bucks.
USB otg is currently a mixed bag storage dose not currently work but is coming "soon" in an update.

ssimset Bigscreen is nice, but it’s so buggy right now. I get kicked out quite a bit. It is beta after all, so I guess it’s expected.
What about a regular android controller does it support it games like Minecraft require a controller
Yes, it supports gamepads (though for some stupid reason you have to use the phone app to connect them)
if it had 2 controllers to ues insted of one
What's the game at 8:23
can you use this with vrchat?
Please watch video. Then ask questions.
No, but there are similar apps available.
Blunty is it worth 200 USD? haha just kidding nice review!
what game is that, where your in the cave?
Tomb raider (a tie in promo for the new movie) I'd BARELY call it a game. There's one puzzle, the rest is just point and walk till you find the "treasure" (which is the movie trailer 🙄)... it does look nice though.
Drift kills me with the gear vr. I was hoping the go would fix it.
FirestoneX I don't notice drift at all with Gear. What model do you run?
Piggy bank: $96
$20 a week allowance here we go!
EDIT: OH SHIT! TAX!
*_BUT CAN IT DO THIS_* **teleports to vr dimension**
Bojack theme is so good.
You'll have to test it out in public too.
This is suspiciously identical to the gear VR. Almost as if they just stuck a stripped down cellphone in a headset.
Christopher Gibbons Seems they basically did; just meet up with a cheap Chinese mobile manufacturer, who's using Samsung panels anyway and Bob's your auntie.
That's exactly what they did, and they aren't trying to hide that fact either.
hardly "suspicious"... they've been very open about the hardware, and in fact actively advertise the GearVR compatibility.
for more.... intimate videos lol

60hz :( disappointing
To me this is basically a simple: Does it run Minecraft? Yes? I'd like one, please. :)
At the moment, it's not available.. But since it's on GearVR, It will probably be updated for Go soon. So yup, no reason it shouldn't.
Can't wait! I'd love to be able to view my Pocket Edition creations in VR!
