I'm with the ex on this that she should have told him much earlier, and I say this having been in a situation where a mother was doing things like this but without child support. Thing is, the mother is my sister, and I reached out to her ex and BEGGED him to do whatever he could to get custody over the kids once I knew what was going on.

girl you didn't overstep your boundaries you UNDER stepped them. I'm a CASA/GAL volunteer (court appointed special advocate). I just hung out with my kiddo today matter of fact. You absolutely had every legal, moral, familial, right and obligation to call the cops/cps on Emily. You told the father of the children what was going on. You were the nicest way to handle that 😊
And you ARE A SAINT. As someone with a broken reproductive system married to wonderful man with a sister who is a lazy mother of 2 I can absolutely understand your point. Most childless not by choice people would be annoyed if not resent the false parent for having kids and wasting the opportunity. Meanwhile you took the high road, did everything you could for your niblings, and still wound up adopting a kid in need. Girl you are a couple miracles shy of canonization.

ESH, accept the kids! Everyone knew this mother had a drinking problem, parties too much, and spent money like it grew on trees, and they let her have a custody in the divorce!? WTH is wrong with this family, and the judge?! Their best interest was to NOT be with the mother. The first time they abandoned those kids with OP, OP should have called their dad and CPS. OP only told him when things got out of hand. Well, the entire thing got out of hand the second that woman had kids, and her family started enabling her. Sure, I agree with the dad for being upset with OP for not telling him sooner, but where the heel was he during those years? OP 3v3n admits she did tske the steps she did for the kids, she did it for vengeance. Would she havecslled tbe kids dad had her SIL not threatened OPs marriage? Ugh!

I would see if SIL'S husband had passed away penniless with no inheritance for SIL or their kid then maybe Maya could offer to help fund the kids education but seeing that SIL and B are still alive and young enough to get jobs and pay for the education. If they can't afford to pay for the schoolteacher they need to find a less expensive school.

15:53 SIL hid what was going on. She would take kids home so just before dad was due to pick them up. And the kids looked well cared for, happy & healthy. Dad had no reason to suspect anything was wrong apart from SIL's past behaviour, that dad didn't know was still happening.
Im glad OP decided to contact dad & support him getting full custody.
Where I am from, courts start at 50/50 custody, if possible. They are finally recognising the vital role fathers have in children's lives. I wish more mothers & fathers recognised it too.
The father of one of my children had/has nothing to do with them. The father of my other child is more interested in making my life difficult, than anything to do with the child.
Parents should love their children more than they hate their ex.

I don't understand the commenters who say that OP had no right to inform the father about the way Emily was neglecting their children! Daniel had every right to know what conditions his children were living in! Emily had no interest in her children prefering to use the child support to go out drinking! Emily is a rubbish mother who only wants the children for child support so that she doesn't have to work.

    Children can’t cure the alcoholic.

I think Op should have kept taking care of Emily's children, but with documentation. I baby sat for someone who was suppose to be working. But it started with me taking care of the 24/7, sometimes without pay. I started when you leave your children with me, you have to check them in with a signature. When it came time to go to court, I had everything ready.

This whole thing sounded really weird.
    Theyre all AHs.
She only informed the dad out of revenge. Not to protect the kids.
    They all deserve each other.

Okay for the people saying that they should have gotten CPS involved , that wouldn’t have worked. If the kids are fine, because relatives are taking care of them, then CPS would find that the kids aren’t neglected. OP has been taking care of the kids, because she can’t have kids and hoping that Emily would change.

it is unknown why they didn't call children services and had the kids taken away from her and turned over to the husband
