OP's parents and grandfather taught Dan to be a parasite. They taught him that he deserves everything and no one else matters. They didn't teach Dan empathy. Dan only learned THINGS matter, not people. Dan doesn't want to help but doesn't want to be seen for what he is. Love, apparently Dan doesn't know what love is - it's not something he can spend after all. As for Dan - he has a college degree and can work and pay those debts off. It's called budgeting and living within your means.

No, OP is an asshole; adoption is a sensitive issue and adopted children can suffer all kinds of trauma even in great homes. To tear away someone's entire identity like that, in front of everyone, is horrific.

All the money, love and permissions Dan was given by his PARENTS, he showed total disgusting contempt for his Mother having cancer. I am so PROUD of OP for doing what he did. OP tried everything in his power to confront his brother and fix the situation, as any family member would. The total uncompassionate brother was the LAST STRAW, in my opinion. Who treats their Mother like that? OP, you are a good son. God Bless you.

While Dan DID deserve what he got, 100%, I wouldn't say he was COMPLETELY at fault here. Yes, what Dan said was horrible, and valuing parties over family is cruel, but OP's parents and grandpa also contributed to this situation.
OP's parents and grandpa were wrong for spoiling Dan. There should've been a "no" somewhere down the line. This likely gave Dan the mindset that he could get away with anything. So, while OP's parents were nice to be thankful, they did get karma for raising Dan as a golden child and not seeing the monster they were creating. Had they heeded OP's warning, this situation could've been avoided.
For OP's grandpa, he was wrong for giving 100% of his inheritance to Dan. Yes, Dan did some good things, but that didn't completely outweigh the bad, and it wasn't fair to those other family members who likely did nothing to be written out of a will. I can understand the decision to a certain degree, and would understand if maybe Dan got a little more than everyone else, as this was prior to his actions towards the family being made public, but 100%? Come on.... Surely not EVERY SINGLE COUSIN was a bad egg, and OP wasn't one.
Dan got what he deserved, but I hope OP's parents and grandpa feel guilty for their roles as well. Sure, it might not explain EVERYTHING, but it certainly was a contributing factor.

And he didn't think for them DAN is a Villian. Op did right if grandad would remove him from will instantly and he suffers as he cries. Op may not get anything or help from granpa as he gave all to Dan. I even make a public post about Dan without it linking to OP

My Grandma may not have had any significant money that was really considered inheritance, but she had items of sentimental value in her home that she specifically gave away about a couple years before she passed. She gave them one by one to the person she wanted to have said items. It was her way of giving them their “inheritance”
She had practically nothing for those last couple years, but it was her way of knowing there wouldn’t be a fight over anything, because there would be nothing left to fight over.

The adults in this story failed Dan as he was growing up and never taught him the importance of compassion or generosity. He was never shown how to care about others so all he ever knew was that his wants and needs took precedent over every one and every thing else. It's not OP's fault that he couldn't get through to his brother when he tried to talk to him about his parents' problems. Dan just didn't care and there wasn't any way Dan would ever care until he got hit with the reactions from others on social media. This was the only way to get him to respond because Dan only cared about the admiration of strangers. He lived only for being popular and material possessions. For people to act like Dan is in the victim really makes me sick though. Despite the fact that he was never made to go without he was not stupid or blind. He knew his family was struggling but he chose not to care or do anything about it because there was no benefit to him helping his family. These people did nothing to harm him in anyway. In fact, they went out of their way to do whatever they could to show him love and devotion. Dan, however, did not appreciate it. Instead he took all he could from them and ignored their suffering. He turned a blind eye to the very people that showed him love and devotion even when they were on the verge of becoming homeless. So in that regard, I guess they didn't fail him. He failed them.

I get hes pissed amd jealous but hoqvhis parent's spent their money isnt his business. He was in college not young n depending on parent's to be taken care of. So its on them what happens also. They put money into one child not the other so he can walk away without feeling bad or not helping. Hes a good kid wanting to help even after how he got treated. But hes also one that lets it keep going. Hes older now and keeps this story on and on. He'd rather play the martyr by taking the care of parents after all they did while the golden boy got everything handed to him. So hes feels validated being the martyr. But this is all my own opinions n i think no matter what advice we give he wants everyone to tell him hes right and are on his side. He doesn't want any other comments back. I feel sorry for him. To keep this going long after. To not to just to cut ties and go on without the bullshit coming from family. But he chooses to keep wallowing in it and hes only hurting himself. None of the family don't care if how he talked about them is true. I hope he gets help with therapy. He went so far in the end that he had no right to say. So hes got his revenge to his brother. Hope he feels better but to me he's worsethann his brother. The very end of thus showed his evil hatred

OP, since you had the guts to spill the beans about the adoption, why didn't you go to Grandpa for help when Mother was sick. That Grandpa would entirely disinherit Dan means he's a jerk. Op is a jerk for not going to his grandpa earlier to tell him what a terrible situation his family was in. They wouldn't have lost their house. Instead he went with his revenge scheme. So when he buys them a house in the end he's no hero . He shouldn't of let them suffer in the first place. Stupid story.

Dan should had helped out his parents in time of need with the bills to a place to stay. But he had chosen not to help to keep up with his own life style. Towards the end after many attempts to get help by his brother then going on social media for advice. This all came done to Dan very own actions.

While it's a good story, it just feels too set up to me. Feels fake. OP doesn't address things like why the grandpa didn't step in. When he posts online, family and friends donate... if there was family who donated, was there no one who could take in the parents? The mother had cancer for frick sake (if real). Then OP snoops through some drawers out of no where and finds adoption papers? Did thr parents bring furniture with them and randomly slip the adoption papers at the top of a pile of paper? Wouldn't the paper be kept somewhere safe and sorted? Why would OP look through a stack of papers he clearly doesn't recognize?
Why would his brother punch him out of the blue with no prior warning or words?
Also, when the brother storms in and says OP could have just asked for money, that's what you say in front of people to save face. There was no one the brother needed to save face with there at the time. He was putting an act on for no one.
I unfortunately have a pathological liar for a brother. He has a number of psychological issues but is super charasmatic and covers them up well. This brother, if real, certainly has some pathological issues and emotional/relationship detachment from his family. I would empathize as someone with a monster for a brother. I'm just not buying this story. OP is either terrible at telling things right or is writing the story as he goes and just picking random things out of a hat to make the story more interesting. "Oh, we had a rich grandpa who i will proceed to never mention again." "Oh, he became rich and left." "Oh, my post blew up overnight, literally and even though apparently thousands of people would have let me know if I was an Asshole for posting, i also am posting here for more validation!" "Oh, distraction time, look! My brother punched me! Drama!!!" "And now he's adopted! Wow! So out of left field!" Reads fake to me.

NTA and I would expose the adoption too.
But I would have gone nc with the parents because they and the grandfather enabled this. Dan is the ah, but the parents and grandpa created the monster.
I would still take my piece of the inheritence but that does not absolve the grandparent, especially since it was his own 'bloodline' obsession that both caused- and ended- douchedan

    • @AutismTakesOn
      @AutismTakesOn 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

I wouldn't go THAT far. Yes, the parents shouldn't have spoiled Dan, BUT OP never mentions himself being negatively effected by it, at least not directly. OP's parents were unwise, sure, but not evil. They didn't do anything for Dan at OP's expense that we know of, which would've been worth mentioning. What OP's parents went through was also sufficient karma for what they did. Yes, the parents were wrong, but they suffered enough to realize they messed up.
As for the grandpa... I understand him to a degree. No, he shouldn't have given ALL of his inheritance to Dan, but he had no way of knowing about Dan's actions towards OP or his parents. All he saw was the hardworking side of Dan, and not the side that OP saw, which was full of entitlement.
Yes, OP's parents and grandpa were bad, but not THAT bad.

I wonder why OP's parents hid the fact that Dan was adopted. And Grandpa really over-reacted to this information. Why his love for Dan so abruptly changed was unbelievable. All he had to do was change the Will to divide everything among 'all' his grandchildren, including Dan. Just because Grandpa found out that Dan was adopted, and not a blood relative, shouldn't have changed how he felt about Dan. If he loved him as his grandson, what really changed?

There's one thing I don't get for your whole life there has been a golden child and it was very apparent even your parents disregarded you to an extent but not completely but and I say this but you still have high hopes for them and you even gave them a house in the end of the story just forgetting about the treatment you went through. Sure I guess it's okay to have a caring life to an extent but you can never forget the treatments they gave you no matter how hard you forget since it's quite literally a huge chunk of your life
