  • Troy and Dave chat about the book that breathed new life into a tired franchise... Grant Morrison's New X-Men. Does it hold up today? Is it as weird as we've come to expect from Maestro Morrison? Does it feature an awful character named Beak who inexplicably hangs around for the entire run?
Yes to most of these and more!

the kid omega gang vs the "special class" is such a memorable standout moment for me so cruel and so satisfying

Finally finished this series last night! I enjoyed it as an introduction to X-Men. I agree with a lot of your sentiments, though. The twist threw me for a loop and didn't make complete sense and the ending felt very Morrison-esque as far as I understood it haha...

The Xorn reveal doesn’t feel so out of place. There are clues as far back as the Annual.

Loved it. Was totally okay with the Magneto depiction. Within the book he took Kick which as the book established brought out the worst in people. Even before the Sublime revelation it was clear Magneto was not operating in the right state of mind. That could have been how they wrote it off instead of the ridiculous convoluted way they did. Also, I wish they went with the fun throwaway moment where Magneto hears Xorn talking to him.

Agreed. Marvel was way to eager to sweep most of Morrison's run under the rug before the ink had finished drying on the final issue. I'm amazed they kept Jean dead as long as they did to be honest...

I bought this omnibus and the Astonishing X-men Omni a couple months ago when the Astonishing X-men Omni reprint came out. I read them back to back. I have to say man I loved new X-men. I thought it was head and shoulders above Whedons run. Not that astonishing was bad I just loved Morrison’s run that much. Which I was surprised because before reading them I was under the impression that Morrison’s run was good but It falls off and Joss just knocks the whole thing out of the park but, in my opinion I would take Grants run over Joss any day.

Love to hear this. As a huge fan of Morrison and a guy who generally dislikes Whedon- I enjoy hearing non-biased takes on their runs. (even though I do really enjoy Whedon's.)

Whedon’s run has a really great first issue or two. After that it starts dropping in quality so quickly that by issue 4 or 5 it’s unreadably bad.

the best thing about this book is that it introduces a bunch of new ideas and characters. it wasn't afraid to do something new and different like so many modern day x men stories

Outside of the Chris Claremont run, I loved it!

After reading the fantastic X-Men Grand Design that just came out- it really gave me the itch to read some of the early Stan Lee and Claremont X-Men runs...

Quick update- I'm 3/4 through the first Claremont Omnibus that began with Giant Sized X-Men. It's a blast. Really got into it.

Different strokes for different folks. I like it for its originality, and because I'm a huge Morrison nerd, but I can see it being off-putting for some of the folks that grew up in the classic era. Having said that, I think Grant has the characterizations down almost perfectly. (with the exception of Magneto)

Imperius Rex no doubt. We all have different tastes. I liked the ground work that he established and what came after. I just find his writing to be pretentious as all hell. It doesn’t help when i also find the art in that era to look like garbage. That being said, people say the same kind of crap about the writers/artists i love so i guess it all balances out in some kind of way. I don’t knock anyone for liking grant morrison. I do find there are quite a bit of people who seem to think that if you don’t like him it somehow makes you less intelligent. That’s some ironic thinking if you ask me.
