  • Today we take a look at an omnibus that is going to be reprinted and again accessible very soon and that is, my first X-Men book ever, Grant Morrison's New X-Men run!
    Grant Morrison's wildly innovative X-Men saga returns! The X-Men, re-imagined with a new look and a new mission, must face weird new threats including evil twins, organ harvesters, sentient bacteria, rebellious mutant youth, power-enhancing street drugs and living weapons! Joined by wicked telepath Emma Frost and mysterious powerhouse Xorn, the X-Men go public - expanding Xavier's school to train a new generation of mutants including the insect-like Angel, the bird-boy Beak, the living sandstorm Dust and eerie telepathic quintuplets the Stepford Cuckoos.

    I’m so so excited this is finally getting a reprint! I’ve read maybe the first 10-12 issues of this run but have always wanted to read it all 👏👏
    Great review and love getting to see more of that art 😍💪

      And yeah I’m a big Morrison fan and have always meant to get to the rest of this run.

    This might be my favorite run of all time. The artwork was interesting and very weird and beautiful. EVERYONE in this arc had excellent character moments, especially Beast and Emma, and they just felt right with the exception of Magneto but he was on drugs. I did feel like Morrison did things with Magneto and others contemptously but honestly it needed to happen to shift the status quo, and keep future writers from constantly using the same character as the big bad, and so far it's stuck. Completely agree with you about Jean being more interesting as Phoenix, dropping her guilt over the past and leaning into her more primal instincts. This might be her best incarnation when it comes to highlighting her qualities in fresh ways that let her grow. I gotta say X-Men Red and Krakoa SUCKED for her.

    I can't wait for the re-print! Edit: Oh wow, I didn't realize Frank Quitley did the illustrations until you popped it open. That's a great creative team. Loved All-Star Superman.

      I really enjoy the way he draws Emma’s secondary mutation. I like the current “full diamond” status in more modern books but the thick layer of diamond over her skin depiction in this book looks so so good and, in a way, is more of an accessory as well.

    Old man here! But this was the run that got me back into X-men. The scenes were immensely powerful, especially at the time. The scene where the sentinels destroying Genosha came on the heels of 9/11. It made the event so much more prescient.
    Cassandra Nova became my favorite villain. Jean catching Emma in Cyclops’ head. The Xorn reveal. The existence of Ernst. The growth of Beast and the new standouts such as Quire, Fantomex, Cuckoos, Beak, etc.
    There are weak points where it doesn’t necessarily “click”. The U men, Sublime, the final arc, and his writing of Wolverine felt weak.
    Overall, this was the “if i could have one to take on an island” run that I always wish I hadn’t read yet, simply for the chance to experience it again for the first time. Thank you❤️

      Love this - thanks for sharing! The run is always going to hold an extremely special place in my heart for getting me into these crazy, merry mutants!
      I’m not up to date on it but the current Marauders run I believe is using Cassandra Nova!

    I really enjoy Kid Omega in this book.
    The idea of a small scale story taking place at the X-School could be such a cool movie.

      When it is time for another mutant movie, I do hope we get that school vibe of the X-Men stories captured sufficiently. Gives the foundation of the story a lot of heart!

    When these were being released. I didn't like what Morrison was doing with the X-Men. I've read it couple times after that years later. It's an interesting take on the X-Men and plays with the themes and ideas about mutations and evolution. It's worth a read and discussion by any X fan.

    • @OmnibusRyan
      @OmnibusRyan  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I can definitely see how this could be a divisive run now that I’ve got the context of the previous years of X-Men. I do really enjoy the themes tackled in here though for the most part and as I mentioned I really dig most the characterizations.

    I love this run, I loved the concept of the third specie in "germ free generation" and the rest of this run. They could probably come back nowadays with what's happening with Krakoa.
    I love Jean's look with the black trench-coat.
    I didn't really like the last arc in that potential future with Sublime/Beast.
    The Xorn twist was unnexpected, but there are some hints prior to it on rereads.
    Riot at Xavier needs an adaptation, whether it's in live action or animated.

      Honestly, an animated adaption of most of this stuff sounds awesome!

      @xemnas9726 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Seasonal-Shadow_4674 I think it holds up pretty well.
      That would depend on what you consider peak literature I guess. For me it's pretty good and not a lot of X-Men content felt as good besides Claremont's.

    My only problem with this run is the awful fill-in art by Igor Kordey! Just pulled me right out of the story and clashed HARD with the nice delicate/tight line work of Frank Quitely. It's a real shame

    • @OmnibusRyan
      @OmnibusRyan  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Understandable, odd/poor art shifts can absolutely take me out of a book too.
      I need to check out some of Quitely’s other work sometime!

      @@OmnibusRyan Yes and most of the other fill in art choices were just fine....but that Kordey stuff is just UGLY. His art would probably work a lot better on a Horror title maybe?

    thinner paper dosent mean its bad,thinner paper is more flexible for the spine,last alot longer,thick paper is stiffer,makes the binding
    thighter,and will be bad for the spine in the long run.

    • @OmnibusRyan
      @OmnibusRyan  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's a good point, and frankly, paper-quality stuff has never really bothered me. I just like to point it out because I know a lot of folks can be more particular about that.

    Good review. I have the floppies up to the issue with Bishop looking like Arnie on the cover {#141???} and a trade paperback with the rest of Morrisons run.
    Love this series. I didn't mind the change of artists in the middle of storylines. It was refreshing to me. I don't really have any criticisms for the series overall. My only gripe is that even though it is clearly set in the mainstream Marvel {616} Universe, it may as well not be because you never see any other non X-Men characters making a guest appearance. It didn't make sense to me that Magneto could take over New York and seal it off and the Avengers, Hulk, Thor and the Fantastic Four didn't bring their muscle to deal with the situation.

    • @OmnibusRyan
      @OmnibusRyan  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That’s a good point, haha. Maybe the limited inclusion of the greater Marvel universe and other team members has to do somewhat with the fact that, in a small way, to me this run almost feels like it was written to be adapted into an on-screen story (movie or otherwise).
      Great book overall though, I love this one too! Thanks for watching!

    Should I wait for the re-print coming out next year (2023) or should I get this version?

    • @OmnibusRyan
      @OmnibusRyan  ปีที่แล้ว

      If you see an opportunity to grab this version, I would do it. Likely the reprinted version will have slightly worse paper quality. Not an insane difference but why not go for the better version if you can, right?

    I had really been interested in reading this for quite awhile, but every other overview I've watched mentioned the same thing your brought up in your video. How inconsistent the art is throughout., and I have hard time reading stuff when the art isn't to my liking lol ... but idk I'm thinking of just sucking it up because I have Astonishing X-Men, but hadn't read it yet because I know comes after New X-Men

    • @OmnibusRyan
      @OmnibusRyan  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I 100% relate to how it can be difficult to read stories were the art feels like it's not living up to usual expectations. In this instance, I immediately got sucked into the wonderful storytelling. It's worth giving it a shot, for sure! Following up New X-Men with Astonishing felt very satisfying to me personally.

      Definitely think it does - there are a few quality dips where you can tell it’s just affected from being an early 2000s comic and a few character moments like that too but overall it’s super solid and plays around with a lot of fun concepts.
