Uncanny X-Force by Rick Remender is Near-Perfect

  • From 2010 through 2013, writer Rick Remender wrote a complete comic for Marvel called Uncanny X-Force. The concept was a "black ops" type team of X-Men that would proactively hunt down threats like Apocalypse. The book is relatively unique in that it had no interruptions for crossovers or guest stars. It tells a complete story - beginning, middle, and end - that changes every team member physically or emotionally. In my opinion, it's nearly perfect. It features deep themes including nature vs. nurture, with the team facing variations of doppleganger versions of themselves. This review breaks down what Remender does well and what the book is about but is relatively spoiler free.

ComicTropes so I take it you were just joking and being facetious when you said that this was going to be a spoiler-free review?!
How the hell is revealing that one of X-Force members kills Baby Apocalypse not a spoiler?!
How is revealing that Psylocke kills her liver Archangel to save the world not a spoiler?!
How the hell is revealing what the murderer of Baby Apocalypse does afterwards not a spoiler?!
Do you come from another universe where spoiler means something entirely different from what it does in ours?!
I was about ready to go purchase this off of ComiXology until you went and spoiled the 3rd Act of volumes 1 and 2 of it you lying jackass!

This series is how I first found Remender and now he's one of my absolute favourite writers.
Why can't Marvel do more uninterrupted runs without crossovers? At this point I don't just wait for the trade I wait for the run to end so I can see if it's interrupted by a crossover I have no interest in reading. Marvel keeps becoming a smaller and smaller percentage of my reading despite having 90% of the characters I grew up caring about.

@@articuliere The character which Fabian Nicieza originally wrote was meant to be darkly humorous mercenary. The original character wasn't really boring unless one is not a fan of dark humor in characters. Then again people find Cyclops an interesting character so go figure. Unfortunately Deadpool got more and more over exposed like Wolverine and thus became more of a parody than what was intended. They Basically turned him into a loony tunes character.

Totally agree with you on so much! I loved this run of Uncanny X-Force. He did an amazing job of having a slick, good story. At Emerald City Comicon a few years back, I got to meet Rick Rememder and talked to him about his run on Uncanny X-Force. I told that I normally find Deadpool way too annoying of a character to enjoy in some cases (there's just only so many 4th-wall breaks I can take) and Rick told me that he hadn't read much Deadpool, so that was probably why. That shocked me, cause he still stayed true to the character. An excellent writer and good guy!

This was one of my favorite series, well, ever. I was a big Deadpool fan, but by the time Uncanny X-Force came around, I felt that writers were in competition with each other to make DP as wacky and goofy as possible. Remender returned the underlying pathos to the character, which had been pretty much absent since Joe Kelly. In my opinion, issue #7 is among my favorite DP stories.

I love this run too! The only negative I could think of is the art on the "Otherworld" storyline in the run. It's just terrible. Would've been PERFECT had they gotten Alan Davis to draw those 4 or 5 issues, especially as it deals with a lot of the Captain Britain/Excalibur stuff Davis came up with.

  • @malcire
    @malcire 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

I liked how they dealt with the Nazi Logan kills. Not that the Nazi who made free choices for his crimes is the same as Logan. But as I was taught at my time in the military and to paraphrase the lesson my seargent gave me; regardless of why you killed someone; regardless of the reasons you did it (and you may have a very good reason) that person had people who loved them, and regardless what your reason is; it won't remove the fact that you killed thier loved one.
That isn’t to defend Nazi’s, just that what I remember; Logan agrees with the Nazi’s statement. Also a few of the Logan stories seem to show that he see's himself as a broken and horrible person. And as a former Marine the idea of the loved people of your victims coming back to punish you for your your crimes spoke to me. And maybe I am wrong in my interpretation. Loved to see your synopsis for the book.

I got back into comics as this run was going on and as you can imagine with content this good, I dove back in hard. I bought it because the team on the cover was like one of my handpicked X-men squads, and immediately had to go back for the previous issues. I then realized hey this same guy is writing all my favorite books right now, like Venom. Fans should also not overlook his Secret Avengers run, as that and X-Force actually carry plot points into Uncanny Avengers (the first volume), with the 3 books making up one massive story Remender was seeding.

    I LOVE THIS CHANNEL!!!!
Im from Mexico and I've been a comic book lover since I was a child, my dad bought me comic books to get me to read and it became a really great bonding time between myself and my father.
When I was a teen comics in my country where scarcely published and some publishers had random dates for new issues and TPB (In México the publishing rights for Marvel and DC where acquired by Editorial Vid) and then the Marvel Cinematic Universe begun.
It was a whole new era for comics in my country lots of Marvel and DC comics were being released but must importantly, my country got they're first TPB, Omnibuses and Hard Covers. My father and I began to buy every single Marvel and DC collected series, but time caught up with me. I started to go to college and even though my dad and I kept buying everything that came out, I couldn't keep up with college and my comic reading.
It came to the point of having a full library of Marvel/DC and some other things I thought I would never read in spanish from Watchmen to Hellboy, Preacher, Kick Ass, V for Vendeta, Southern Bastards, Saga, Invincible, etc.
Today I was watching this video and suddenly came to me "Wait a minute, I think I got a omnibus of that" and yes there It was on a shelf, the whole Remender run in one Book.
I love this channel because with every video you remind me of everything I love in the comic industry and also I learn so much of new and important things like lettering and rediscover things like Uncanny X-Force.
Keep up the great work. The Hellboy episode is my favorite!

I was going to do a video on death of the author involving how X-Men (namely the movies) were intended to be open metaphors for race, orientation, etc but make a great 2nd amendment argument.

I was bidding on an eBay auction for the entire run the other day for $140 but I lost... I had a feeling it was good, cause a lot of the issues are valuable. as soon as I saw the title of this video I immediately went back to eBay and bought the entire run for a $150.

Stopped after Deadpool feeding the Archangel bit to avoid spoilers. Jfc this is genius, how do you even come up with something like this???

I quite liked this run, though the return to the Age of Apocalypse setting was where I started missing issues and fell away from it. AoA had a lot of problems especially with its secondary cast but I wasn't a huge fan of destroying what little happy ending it got. Though apparently it somewhat reconned the Victor Von Doom of the AoA world to be less boring and terrible than his actual AoA tie-in,

Now that you mention it, Deadpool 2 would have been 10X more awesome if the kid WAS kid Apocalypse instead... Would have tied with the X-Men movie where Apocalypse gets resurrected but as a child somehow.

that era (messiah complex and onwards) was the best run of X-men since the Claremont era. The x-force that kicked all this off is my fave X-men run. It was a great renaissance for X-men. Then the take over ruined it

Too many "realities" for my tastes. Too many "versions" of characters from too many "realities". Ruins all credibility and accountability. Nice art though. Like Esad Ribic.

yeah....it fits Famine attack + Deadpool power ....clever but....John Byrne wouldn't have done this. I just think the schlock in the post-boom "modern" comics is all w/e.....these things don't sell, hard. The Reservoir Dogs ear question. Wrong answer here. Same clever power play, clever off screen quips....less clown shoes to avoid.

Good video, though I don't recall Psylocke facing off against a past version of herself, ad mentioned around the 12 minute mark. That shot is of her battling the Shadow King. She does have an encounter with a future version of herself but it is non-violent and happens later in the series.

Ok so i had bought a handful of his run in floppies, loved them all. Then i bought both trade paperbacks of his X-Force run, but i left them on the East Coast when i moved.
A few wks ago i bought the Rick Remender X-Force Omnibus and TOTALLY FORGOT about it.

@ComicTropes - dude. This is not 1957 or even 1857. You are not a swank bachelor whose lifestyle reflects the magic of alcohol and unexpressed desires. Seriously - doesn't Seattle provide weed at reasonable prices? ALCOHOL? I'm not going to type about role models or heroes because obviously you haven't a clue as to what compels real heroes. Here's a clue: art is not fueled by alcohol. A glass of wine or a shot a day, fine. I don't want to be that "sober guy" who preaches to folk born in the eighties and nineties because he had his last drink in 1982 and ate out of bins for six years and panhandled for 3 bucks a day for coffee brandy and coffee so he could endure another night in West Hollywood sleeping on rooftops and behind the bushes. Humans who choose to evolve will evolve. Dude. Go to a meeting. Even at your rather expansive size more than a shot a day simply crosses the line and becomes pure poison. We all have our preferences but fer crissakes be a frikken role model and go to a meeting. "We admitted that we were powerless over alcohol...". Aloha.
