- We are doing an early look at the Retroid Pocket 4 Pro. We will see how it stacks up with PSP, PS Vita, GameCube, Wii, Nintendo Switch, and PS2 emulation, and see how it sets new standards in handheld gaming. A big shoutout to GoRetroid.com for providing the Retroid Pocket 4 Pro for this early review.
The Retroid Pocket 4 Pro comes with the Dimensity 1100 chipset, 8GB of LPDDR4x RAM, 128GB USF 3.1 storage and WiFi and Bluetooth capabilities. I was really surprised by its performance, especially since it's a sub $200 handheld. Let me know your thoughts in the comment section.

UPDATE: Retroid has fixed the green screen issue and will be releasing the update over firmware. From what I've seen, they appear to have done a great job!

Great video. I'd be very appreciative of a Vita3k tutorial specifically on the RP4Pro. I gave up on it with the RP3+, it was so confusing. You said in the video to let you know in the comments section, so here is me begging lol
Being able to play ps2 at 2x is amazing and being able to play some switch games is crazy! So glad I ordered one.
Being able to play it well. You will get stutters in some games from what I saw a game like sly Cooper looked unplayable granted could just be user settings but still

The Retroid Pocket 4 Pro is basically just an Odin 2 Lite, or Odin 2 Mini, especially considering Retroid owns Ayn.

I agree alot of these reviewers tend to just play the start of games. many 10mins worth and say its OK.

@@knivesron that's fair and I am certainly guilty of that depending on the title. It can be challenging finding a balance in long form games for review because uou are often doing 10-15 games in a video like this or more, so you could be in dozens of hours of gameplay just to get to a point of showing 20 secconds of footage.
Also, I am only speaking for myself, when I am testing devices, I do spend hours doing that to get a feel across multiple platforms, but I often don't have the camera on while I do that testing. So when I turn around and do film, I have a tendency to start a new file, and show the beginning of the game.
I like how you addressed specifics when it comes to marketing, like warning to keep people’s expectations in check, you’re very spot-on in this review when it came to your impressions. Very nice review. Can’t wait for mine to arrive!
I personally wanna see more about 3DS games. Specifically Pokémon, which I feel should run very smoothly as only things like shaders are what’s demanding on them. But from what I’ve seen shader loading is significantly better in this one.
That and Monster Hunter which are hard to run but I HAVE seen people making them work.
Great review! Definitely need to see some more Gamecube and PS2 footage, since that's kind of the draw of this device. You should also include what settings you used for which game. I'd personally be interested in seeing things like Sonic Heroes, Shadow the Hedgehog, Kirby's Air Ride, Tales of Symphonia, Skies of Arcadia Legends, Kingdom Hearts 2. Just some titles that I think might really show us what the device can do in those more hi-octane and demanding types of games.

Could you try to install and run Elder Scrolls Oblivion on that thing through the Winlator windows emulator? You can probably install the GOG version of Oblivion on it. I've actually managed to do it on the RP3+, but that device is just not powerful enough to run Oblivion properly, as it comes with a lot of graphical issues
Hi this is a very detailed video, im already buy it one, so what type of usb C cable did you use? I heard is not a ordinary cable.
I used just a standard USB c to hdmi I grab off Amazon, nothing special

One question only:
So this portable console (like all the others around) must be connected to the WIFI if not, you are uncapable to play?
I thought you could download games, save them into the SD and play when you want.
So if I want to play Gear of war I can’t unless I’m connected to the wifi, correct?
No, you can play with no wifi. Wifi was only necessary if you want to use apps with remote play, like Xbox or ps remote play apps.

Which 3ds emulator version did you use? Did you use the Google play version or did you get it off the Citra website or did you use MMJ?

Thankyou for answering my question. I got another question tho😂. So when you download the emulators, and download load the games do you still need to be connected to the internet. Like after I download any game I can play at anytime without WiFi. Like if wanted to play a psp vitia game do I have to be online to play the game or play any other game on the list? I know it’s kinda silly to ask but just wondering
No need for internet connection after you have what want downloaded.

Batman for vita runs, but it has compatibility issues and isn't fully playable, but that's the emulator, not devices issue.
Bully and manhunt both seem to run with minimal issues.

Did you try to connect the Rokid Pocket 4 pro to an external monitor or glasses like xreal air ? Does it work ? can you use it in extended mode or only "duplicate" ? Thanks for your feedback !
I did and it should be in the review. I went with USB-C to HDMI for 1080p. Just screen mirror, no extended mode.

@@eiceys4612 video out over the mini hdmi would be limited to the screen resolution, but not over usb-c.
A specific title I see having issues on handheld PCs and Android devices for PS2: Shin Megami Tensei Digital Devil Saga
That has slowdown and some graphical issues. In the past I tried playing it via Vulkan with some graphical issues (can see characters and some objects through walls) and then switching to OpenGL would lock it at 1x resolution but ran better. Or vice-versa, but I am pretty sure those were the issues on those renderers.
Even on the Steam Deck I have seen the rare hiccup (though runs largely fine at ~720p).

Good review, missed reviewing the video out, and with the pro model the 1080P out, kinda a big miss. Screen has been fixed but seeing youve been made aware of it below. You didnt actually comment on what games worked well or had slowdown, you could see some it in the video but since you were the one performing the testing, hearing your thoughts wouldnt have been out of line.
I did talk about the video out and showed the USB-C to HDMI in action. I mentioned both micro hdmi at 720p and usb-c at 1080. In terms of performance testing, since the newer emulators are so finicky and there's a bunch of adjustments that can be made, I like to let people see for themselves.

It's possible someone builds a custom build but at this time I don't think so. Honestly android may be the best option. Stand alone emulators are what you want for the advanced titles
It will exists EmulationStation in the near future for Android
You would need to root the device and that's not possible yet. People figured out how to root the 3 and it didn't always work
So you have to download a certain app to play GameCube games? Or it’s it on there and you have to download them? Same goes for ps2
It's effectively an android device, so you just go to the playstore and download the emulators

Vita games are tough because power aside, you are at the mercy of the emulator itself. There's a big list of compatible games, but a bigger one of games that won't run regardless of power you push into it.

Whats a good handheld that can run n64? im looking for something on the smaller side
The rg405/505 can run them no problem and n64 runs incredibly well on this device and will also on the base RP4 for 150.
Where I live it will cost me like 50 to 60 bucks more but seeing ps2 performance I am tempted to buy one for myself. Deck will cost me like 150 bucks more and I have a decent enough pc to play my pc games. Ig I will pick the retroid it fits my needs. Thanks for the detailed review.

No, I believe the custom drivers are for Qualcomm chipsets (Adreno) and isn't supported on Mali yet.

This device is a dream come true for the PS2/GameCube/Wii era of games. But with some performance shortcomings for some games/emulators, I just wonder if it's worth just waiting another 2 or so years for when they release a Retroid Pocket 5 Pro lol? We'll get a better chip for better performance, and hopefully a better battery and quieter fan.
Side note: does anyone use Xemu or Xenia on these retro handhelds??

I’m torn to preorder now because of that green tint on the screen. I’m new to handheld emulators and I hope retroid’s reputation will come thru with fixing this. Also since this device has no installed games, maybe you’ll have a video in the future about like a start up guide ;) your review though is spot on and thanks for testing those various platform games.
They actually just let me know it has been fixed and they sent me a picture. I think there is a firmware for me to test as well to verify. Looks like that screen issue is a non-issue now!

The unit should not come with commercial pirated ROMs, but emulators should be preinstalled, configured and ready-to-go. I bought Retroid Pocket Flip last year and wasted too much time doing this. Not impossible of course, but since most people have to do this anyway, this could be stream-lined.
Besides this, Retroid makes great devices and I will pick up a 4 Pro ASAP :D
When I launched the device for the first time, there was a quick setup wizard that allowed me to check off a bunch of emulators it could install for me. The issue was most were out of date or old, so I had to annually update a number of them.

Games of interest:
Switch: Bravely Default 2, Monster Hunter Generations Ultimate, Pokemon Lets Go Pikachu/Eevee, Animal Crossing. I feel like these games are borderline between possible and not.
PS2: Final Fantasy 10, Final Fantasy 12, Silent Hill 2. But honestly im confident these will play just fine.
Id love to see Kingdom Hearts 1 or 2 gameplay for ps2!
Guys remember that this is a $200 handheld, as much as you can play ps2 games with 1.5x resolution is a steal!!

199 + tax, s/h, etc. It's not _really_ sub 200. Kinda wish people wouldn't say it like that because you never _just_ paying just that number. Heck, I'd have preferred if they just labeled it 200 and earn the extra dollar. My question though is does this excite you because of the ability of the hardware itself or because of what you think we'll see in this price range later in the year?

Why do you never use the full screen real estate when emulating?
I try to leave things as stock, but I could have done full screen for 3ds.
Everything else I like to leave in its original aspect ratio.
They are full screen at native ratio. Not every game works well with 16:9 hacks
