    There's a new update out now with Native Code Execution (NCE). This is huge news for switch emulation as the CPU now runs the game entirely natively. Only the GPU remains emulated which means a lot of games will have a huge performance bump!

    Thank you Russ! This video answers my question from the first impressions video 😁 What i see here is a nice list of fully playable switch games and it's probably the challenge Ayn wants to win.
    I don't know how much yuzu emulator can push emulation further, if zelda games will be more smooth and how many playable games will be added. It's already a win.
    The fun part is that emulation below switch on this device will be smooth and the game list available to play is endless.

    I think it's still pretty early to do a proper Switch emulation on Android test video presently at the moment since the Android port of Yuzu is pretty much in its alpha stages, while the upcoming Strato emulator seems nowhere else close to being released. I won't be using my Odin 2 to play Switch games, but the fact it can at all is a great sign of just how far dedicated 'retro' handheld devices have come in the last few years.

    • @ekinteko
      @ekinteko 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +9

      Well, this is running the flagship processor (QC 8g2) with custom drivers, an overclock and cooking. Which means it will stay relevant and competitive for a decent time. AYN can just focus on the small things, and to just keep making these and shipping them out.
      But the testament to why such an affordable "retro" handheld CAN emulate a current selling console has several factors. First is the one stated above (QC 8g2), secondly it's because both handheld/console are running very similar software-hardware so not much differences, third it's because the emulation developers are that talented, and most importantly fifth point is because the NSwitch is overpriced and underpowered.
      Just for context, the NSwitch has performance closer to the 2005 Xbox than the 2014 XB1. It was released trying to compete against the PS4 Pro. And it is currently trying to compete in stores against the 2020 XSX. So yeah, from a Docked or Home Console perspective it is woefully underpowered. But if you look at the handheld performance, and judge where it should be, it's actually not bad. For context just picture the GBA vs Dreamcast, NDS vs PS2, PSP vs GameCube, 3DS vs Wii, PS Vita vs Xbox 360, and NSwitch vs PS4 Pro.
      edit: spelling

      @@ekinteko Power of the original console does not matter much though when talking about computer configurations and trying to emulate those by software. The fact that Ayn Odin 2 follows the computer architecture of an Ayn Odin which was better suited physically for PlayStation emulation is incredibly impressive (though with mods) that you don't get close to maxing this thing out emulating a system that is purely software.

    • @bulletpunch9317

    • @ekinteko
      @ekinteko 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@bulletpunch9317 The AYN Odin2 is about +10% faster than the Samsung S23 Ultra, and it can sustain that performance indefinitely. The Samsung seems to start throttling after 10 minutes.
      The NSwitch is ARM-based and so is the AYN Odin2. If the NSwitch was built on x86, it would be much harder to emulate on the AYN Odin2. So it's much less about software-emulation and moreso about language-translation. They're also somewhat close in software (Android vs Custom Unix), which allows this translation to work in the first place.
      Just think about the difference in performance between the GameCube and the QSD 835. It's a huge difference maybe x16 or more, and that's with the highly optimised Dolphin Emulator. Now compare the QC 8g2 to the NSwitch hardware and it's a difference closer to x8 or less. And that's with an emulator (Skyline/Strato/Yuzu) which is fairly immature or new. Not sure if you get my point with that.
      Similar case with the PS Vita and the Vita3k Emulator. Yet we still don't have the original Xbox emulator on Android. Our Windows 98 is okay, but the Windows Xp emulation on AndroidOS is pretty clunky. Whilst emulating Windows7 is basically impossible, as is the likes of Xbox 360, PS3, and WiiU. All of these platforms are arguably slower than the NSwitch.
      We can't expect XB1 or PS4 emulation on ARM, maybe on macOS running M1/M2/M3 with Max/Ultra variant. That's a more Desktop System with dedicated hardware co-processors. But not on any Apple A-Bionic or Qualcomm Snapdragon or MediaTek Dimensity chipsets. It's just too taxing having to do software-emulation of x86 into ARM architecture. Just look at the current state of Windows 11S, software-emulation isn't going too well for Microsoft and they've had a decade into it.

However full speed floats around 8-10gb from what I can tell. But if your device has 20, 30, or even 40gb of ram it will devour all of it and shutdown all background activity even your home screen whi h is typically exempt.

    Agreed on the question of Switch emulation-my original model Switch (hacked) is still alive and kicking, but sometimes I want the bigger screen of my Steam Deck or 4K upscaling on my gaming rig. @@regis_c resolution isn’t the reason I reach for the Deck over the Switch at times, it’s literally the larger screen size for these aging eyes. And remember, I’m not used to an OLED Switch, the screen on my Deck (with tweaks) is comparable to my first revision Switch screen in terms of vibrancy and such. I can run many of my favorite games (with hacks) in a 16 by 10 aspect ratio, filling the screen, and for those that are “stuck” in 16:9, the bump in screen size is still a deal maker for me. It’s 0.8” bigger-6.2” versus 7”-and even letterboxed it’s still meaningfully more legible for me. That said, I still love my Switch and pick it up to play from time to time (the battery life is still pretty impressive all these years later) but I also like having options.

    The main issues with those is the screen ratio, you have to make choices for emulation 16/9 is king if you don't care about ds and 3ds because those 2 actually benefits of a 20:9 ratio and on a 5~6" display it makes the difference so right now I'm keeping my phone+kishiV1 combo not ready to put money to have a more ergonomic experience for that I have a chipped switch lite with a full 1tb microsd just a shame that the lite didn't came with an oled display

    Unless things have changed with Vita 3K, then the newest good MLB game we can emulate on Android is Sony's "MLB 11: The Show" for PS2 and PSP. Those rosters are well over a decade old. Apparently; MLB "encouraged" Sony to port their formerly exclusive series to Xbox and Switch in recent years. I don't own a Switch; but, I'm liking the idea of picking up a physical copy of last year's "The Show" for cheap (because I'm not a Pirate from Pittsburgh... Go Reds) and running it on the Odin 2. I'm not sure if it would run well or be like that game that can't be spoken.

    Ram utilization is always tricky to measure because processors like to use more ram that necessary. Meaning that 50% usage on the pro might not necessarily mean 6 gb of ram used on the base version. You can see this with how most games will use 30-40% ram even if they are lighter and probably only need a fraction of that. I wouldn’t expect that to mean there is hope to run a game like TOTK on the base version. But it’s something to consider especially for those games that are around 7 gb on the pro version.

Obviously having that little extra wiggle room is nice, but I can't see a practical reason other than possible future proofing if they come out with other system emulation down line (PS3, XBOX/ 360). The 8GB would be at 75% for most worst cases here. Am I missing something?

    Hey Russ, just want to point out that legally speaking, it doesn't matter if you have the physical game but got the rom through "other means" that is still considered piracy...the only way you're not legally liable is if you actually extract the roms off of YOUR physical game(s)...this is the grey area many people get confused by. There are many articles covering this where they interviewed copywrite lawyers confirming this...
    not to mention linus tech tips has a video on it where he showed how to actually extract a rom from a cartridge, (Not an easy thing to do).
    Showing a physical game while getting the rom online simply serves as a "placebo effect", and if Nintendo really wanted to they could come after you (or anyone doing the same) anyway and force you to prove that you extracted those roms from your own games... that's IF they wanted to....
    i just wanted to make that clear for others that think it's "ok as long as you have the physical game."

    For all the hoops you have to jump through for Switch emulation, my personal preference would be to play on actual hardware. However, since my kids often have the family Switch squirreled away in their rooms somewhere, this would be a nice fallback option.
    Also, one of my goals for the Odin 2 is an ultimate Animal Crossing device, it's annoying to switch between so many devices to stay somewhat current on all my saves (my OG savefile is close to 20 years by now!) So even though it is a more lightweight game, I'd love to see some footage from New Horizons.
