I think the RP2s was the testing ground for most of what retroid wanted to do on the RP4. They use a lot of similar components and generally seems like a product that was meant to take more of the risk for the RP4
Hmm. I've been thinking about ordering the rp4p for a while. However that screen issue puts me off buying for now. Truly appreciate the video! Edit: it would be awesome for a Ota fix on it. Guess it's a wait and see game.

Looks like this is going to be the device that I was hoping it would be. Price was never really a concern, I wanted a form factor like this that had basicslly full ps2 performance. I was kinda torn on the idea of a 16:9 device or waiting for a 4:3 one, but I think I want the 16:9 since it can handle wide-screen hacks and I'm more interested in the psp/vita library, and after not falling in love with the anbernic 405m. I'll be grabbing one of these on Friday and the rg405m will be going up for sale. Also per Retro game corps, the screen issue is fixed now
I don't watch every Taki video but when I do I'd say he make every effort to be fair to a device. And I feel like this is a fair first look. There are some things that are a bit questionable on these review units that make me feel like there's a moderate % chance we might see a hardware revision unless these quirks can be handled in software. That said you shouldn't buy a device for what you think it will _become,_ you should buy it for what it is now with the understanding it might not get much better. I feel like I should probably wait for the production models to reach reviewers hands before buying at this point, to see if there's any real improvement over the review units they sent out early.
I'm glad you called out the whole catalog percentage thing that some reviewers do. Much love to Russ but it drives me insane when he says stuff like "Roughly half should be playable" PS2 emulation is hardly a given even on current PCSX2 builds and high end PCs, it's damn sure not gonna be that simple on a dead emulator running on mobile chipsets
I am so GLAD you tested the battery and charging performance, my big worry was the battery going empty faster than it can charge while playing over hdmi.

I’d be interested in seeing multiplayer tested across various platforms and how it works or doesn’t. For example; Pokémon battling/trading in gba, Smash Melee on GameCube, gran turismo on ps2, and maybe something like monster Hunter on 3DS. I picked up two of these to be able to play games with my girlfriend and seeing the capabilities and a brief example would be nice. Might be too much for a general overview video, but would definitely be appreciated.
It certainly looks like a promising device ... this in a clamshell format like the RP Flip and with a decent screen would be very difficult to resist. I'm excited for the full review and your ideas for quantifying PS2 compatibility.
Really hope they can adjust the analog trigger ranges and the color balance in software or before shipping, because otherwise this really does a lot of what I want out of a handheld. Android with decent gamecube/wii performance, and functional 3DS are the big ones for me, thats the era of video games I'm most attached to I guess, including the n64 a bit. Stuff like Star Fox 64/Adventures, Defender (GC), Wind Waker, or some of the 3DS zelda/fire emblem games. I'm particularly concerned about the triggers since some games (looking at you defender) have different functionality for a light press or a 'click' of the trigger, and poor analog control will make that hard to manage in emulator, necessitating rebinding the click functions to other keys.
Yayyy, Mommy and Daddy finally stopped fighting!! Now that you two are good can you please tell Mom to shove all of this into a Flip 2.0 with lots of pretty transparent case choices?
My RP3+ screen is yellow at least as your RP4 Pro screen is green. I mention it because you don't have a Retroid like that in the video. Luckily there are Android settings to fix the colors, however it's annoying to buy a device without knowing the screen it will come with.
During the Retro Handhelds stream, Retroid said they'd be fixing the screens in the firmware before release. All the pre-release models appear to have the same issue.
Soo glad they moved the select/start to a functional location! But maybe to make it even better, separate them outside the screen like most controllers? 🤔
9:30 feels more like a personal preference vs an issue with the device. like on my switch in handheld mode i still pretty much hold R and ZR together with two fingers as it helps change the hand position to make precise(or as precise as the joycons can be) aiming. issue still stems tho if you did want to use only your pointer finger and thumb only then you would need to swap the position of the ABXY and the stick akin to something like the wii u gamepad or steam controller(technically)
Thanks so much for the detailed view. I like the performance, but not so much the hard to use analogues sticks and green screen ring. Hopefully these can be fixed, as other than that, it’s a great device at this price point and indeed size. I’m personally considering both this and an OLED deck. Not a fair comparison, I know, but the fact this fits in your pocket makes it truly portable, which is an advantage in itself. Here’s hoping Retroid improves these issues on this otherwise amazing device.
RP4/RP4Pro is 750x1334 touchscreen versus the 1080x1920 touchscreen for the Odin Lite. CPU-GPU is the same D900 on the RP4 and Odin Lite. RP4Pro is D1100 versus Qualcomm Snapdragon SD845 on the Odin. Price of RP4 4GB/128GB is $149 versus $207 4GB/64GB or $237 6GB/128GB. RP4Pro is $199.
Thanks for the honest review. The screen having such a big downside pretty much convinced me to pass on the rp4/pro for now. A good screen is undeniably important for a handheld and I just cant accept something thats consideref mid range to have a poor one. Its the same reason I passed on the og steam deck and didnt pick one up until the oled released. Once you are paying multiple benjamins for a handheld device, it better damn well have a good screen without the need to wait for software calibration that you might have to do yourself or even wait an entirely new hardware revision.
Tbf no matter the cost you don’t want stuff like the green tint but I look at what I bought 10 yrs ago for emulation at the same cost and I’m blown away by this regardless. Each to their own though my bro has waited for the oled deck for exactly the same reasons
The screen is only off on review and engineering units. Those units will be fixed with an ota update, and the official units will ship with this problem corrected out of the box.
I understand your concerns over the sensitivity of those triggers but given you were involed with having the start and select buttons on the top of the RP3 which is just the craziest decision ever, it feels a bit rich. I've ordered one. I already have a bunch of devices including the Odin 2 Max but this really feels like a decent little device for the money.
I just really hope I can play Auto Modellista on the go now... 🤞🏽🤞🏽 Waiting for my 16bit color way. Started with the RP2+ and Miyoo Mini+. Love them both but I need a portable GameCube and the RP4P seems to be it
Surprised about the screens as i always thought they are the exact same (of course subject to panel manufacturing variance) across the rp3/3+/4 due to the same resolution/size and for economies of scale reason. I don't have any issue with the rp3+ screen, though i sold mine after some months due to the small screen size, small buttons and lack of ergonomics/grip (not interested in an external one).
I feel like the shoulder button issue can be fixed in software with a driver update, but half the range being in the last 10% of the physical movement is a problem.
ago don't get how he didn't know that Retroid knows about the screen color issue and it's only on the review units and will be fixed for retail. Retro handhelds and Russ and them knew about this and mentioned it.
Thank you very much! Bummer you were not involved on this one, though. With Yuzu out of the question, I now only want to know if stable Dolphin, Citra and AetherSX2 are possible @2x with base model instead of Pro.
8:26 - 10:31 So close and yet so very far away from perfect. Now that these systems are getting into later generations of emulation, analogue triggers and their continued use during gameplay must be sorted out. That much dead zone is inexcusable and cramping during an FPS will end your playtime quick. As much as they want it to be compact, a little extra plastic to help ergonomics may be in order. On a side note incase the company sees this... PLEASE start making these things with back buttons. as small as they are, having back buttons for L3 & R3 would be very helpful.
The one problem i have with handeld consoles, is that they are a controller as well. And usually controllers have way shorter lifespan that the other hardware of the console (Cpu, Gpu, Screen etc). So when the controller eventally breaks, which can happen after as soon as 1-2 years, the console becomes unusable without a difficult reparation..
I hope they do a software update to fix the triggers. I vastly prefer analog triggers over digital buttons, so I was really looking forward to that aspect of the RP4.
Thank you for this entertaining and informative first look video. The D1100 is a phone chipset; if they'd kept the cellular modem and added a SIM card reader I'd buy this in a heartbeat to replace my phone. The screen is plenty big enough, Android is my preferred OS anyways, and it has a lot more performance for everything. As it is, I'm not sure if I'd be better off buying this unit or putting the $200 it commands into my next phone budget. Other than possibly the RedMagic, no phone is going to have active cooling like this does. That matters to me. Your upcoming review will be helpful in making that decision.
Taki, I have been begging reviewers all over the place to show some Monster Hunter 3DS on the Retroid Pocket 4 Pro. I'm so happy to see Monster Hunter 4 running on this handheld. Can't wait til mine arrives. Thank you.
Too bad the analog triggers aren't tuned properly. That takes away a lot of the fomo that I had. Analog triggers would have let me play Mario Sunshine and driving games like Gran Turismo 4. I'll make do with my RP3+ till I can afford the Odin 2 or the RP5 is out to play GameCube and PS2 games.
This is what I was looking for a year or two ago; I can't impulse buy it since I have an OG Deck these days so it's not really justifiable anymore. The pocketable size would sure be great though! Maybe something I'd pick up in summer.
Should we keep the preorder? Because of green tint I think I’m going to cancel it. Like you said all panels should be like this even over air update other color or brightness will be affected
Can't say I'm impressed with the CPU side of things, my 5yr old Samsung A90 phone scores 970 in Geekbench 6 single core. I'd have thought things would have moved on a bit more
They just can't get them in SBC form cheap enough, sucks but. . . I guess snapdragon has strong and expensive contracts Edit: weird, with how strong that cpu *seems* like it should be, maybe some of the GPU workload ought to be offloaded onto the CPU
@@YixdyAh. CPUs are very very bad at GPU tasks. They are slow. Whenever you read about "software rendering", that's the CPU instead of the GPU. Try it on PC or an Emulator, Software rendering will most of the times take a game from 60fps to 6fps. The issue is that offloading small tasks to the CPU sounds unproblematic but the CPU can't run those tasks fast enough and it will bottleneck the GPU causing the entire game to be slower than before!
I cant wait for a review after the OTA update, want to see how bad the screen is after the color balancing, hopefully it's not too bad. also I really hope the trigger sensitivity/dead zone can be improved

Delicious review, thanks man!
The screen should be fixed on retail models
Tbf no matter the cost you don’t want stuff like the green tint but I look at what I bought 10 yrs ago for emulation at the same cost and I’m blown away by this regardless. Each to their own though my bro has waited for the oled deck for exactly the same reasons
You should throw away all your cheap whacky 4k tvs and wait for the 12k tvs in couple years.
The screen is only off on review and engineering units. Those units will be fixed with an ota update, and the official units will ship with this problem corrected out of the box.
@@blakeromo source?
I am super interested in this, such a compact little beast. Might pick this up!
the Pro specs mention it can output 1080p via USB C. is that true, and does that bypass the resolution scaling issue?
I understand your concerns over the sensitivity of those triggers but given you were involed with having the start and select buttons on the top of the RP3 which is just the craziest decision ever, it feels a bit rich.
I've ordered one. I already have a bunch of devices including the Odin 2 Max but this really feels like a decent little device for the money.
I just really hope I can play Auto Modellista on the go now... 🤞🏽🤞🏽 Waiting for my 16bit color way. Started with the RP2+ and Miyoo Mini+. Love them both but I need a portable GameCube and the RP4P seems to be it
You can, I tested it.
Great to hear! Such a hidden gem of a game, thanks for the great video man. Was waiting for your review specifically
I’d love it if they could come out with an upgrade kit for the RP3+ but I’m not expecting it. Still some nice upgrades on the RP4
I mean, it looks kinda the same, but perry much everything for changed.
That r2 buttons the perfect immersion for pulling up a gun ngl😂
Surprised about the screens as i always thought they are the exact same (of course subject to panel manufacturing variance) across the rp3/3+/4 due to the same resolution/size and for economies of scale reason.
I don't have any issue with the rp3+ screen, though i sold mine after some months due to the small screen size, small buttons and lack of ergonomics/grip (not interested in an external one).
😊
I feel like the shoulder button issue can be fixed in software with a driver update, but half the range being in the last 10% of the physical movement is a problem.
21:44I really appreciate that you showcase the hl2 Android port.
Indeed... Straight up an Odin 2 Mini... Hardware and Software wise... Happy Gaming...👌🤯🧐
That color shift should be fixable by updating the color profile so long as the green tint is consistent between units.

don't get how he didn't know that Retroid knows about the screen color issue and it's only on the review units and will be fixed for retail. Retro handhelds and Russ and them knew about this and mentioned it.
Mad respect for playing "Dead Cells". I wish it got more attention, It's so good.
Thank you very much! Bummer you were not involved on this one, though.
With Yuzu out of the question, I now only want to know if stable Dolphin,
Citra and AetherSX2 are possible @2x with base model instead of Pro.
The Retroid Pocket 3S is finally in Takis hands!
XD
8:26 - 10:31 So close and yet so very far away from perfect. Now that these systems are getting into later generations of emulation, analogue triggers and their continued use during gameplay must be sorted out. That much dead zone is inexcusable and cramping during an FPS will end your playtime quick. As much as they want it to be compact, a little extra plastic to help ergonomics may be in order.
On a side note incase the company sees this... PLEASE start making these things with back buttons. as small as they are, having back buttons for L3 & R3 would be very helpful.
I recommend using on mario galaxy 1 & 2 the riivolution patch that makes the game playable with the classic controller 🙌🏼
I do wonder if the, deadzone? Of the analog shoulders, is a software deal. You'd think the whole range of the potentiometer would be used.
Great Vid Taki! Just a question, what’s the game you was playing at 21:15?
Dead Cells!
This might be a good handheld for a dedicated Gran Turismo/Burnout device
7:21 Speaking of the R2/L2 Buttons. This could be easy fixed with software update, isn´t it?
Thank you for this entertaining and informative first look video. The D1100 is a phone chipset; if they'd kept the cellular modem and added a SIM card reader I'd buy this in a heartbeat to replace my phone. The screen is plenty big enough, Android is my preferred OS anyways, and it has a lot more performance for everything.
As it is, I'm not sure if I'd be better off buying this unit or putting the $200 it commands into my next phone budget. Other than possibly the RedMagic, no phone is going to have active cooling like this does. That matters to me. Your upcoming review will be helpful in making that decision.
what i got form this video:
adjust sensitivity of analog triggers
better fan curve (best if the configurability is left to the user)
screen color fix
So disappointing to see that the screen and shoulder buttons are dealbreakingly bad. Thanks for the vid taki!
Might give this a miss and get an Odin 2. Thanks Taki
@@superfurryjelly Just pulled the trigger on a white pro model. Can't wait 🥳
Taki with the calipers giving the people the specs they want.
It should be very interesting on how Anbernic is going to respond Taki. Thanks for the review young lad.
This is what I was looking for a year or two ago; I can't impulse buy it since I have an OG Deck these days so it's not really justifiable anymore. The pocketable size would sure be great though! Maybe something I'd pick up in summer.
Great intro to RP4 Pro. Would really like to see how it does with Phantasy Star Portable from PSP on your emulation video.
Damnnn i love watching this kind of vids for like past 3 yrs even though i can't buy this kind of devices
Thanks Taki! The trigger depth is a little frustrating, hopefully they can fix it with an update.
Yep, sold. Exactly what i was waiting for
I don't mind the issue with shoulder buttons. If i decide to get this, i'll pretty much only play jrpgs.
Should we keep the preorder? Because of green tint I think I’m going to cancel it. Like you said all panels should be like this even over air update other color or brightness will be affected
4:22 I just learned a new way to use my digital calipers, thanks lmao
Yeesh, I was SOLD on the RP4 Pro before seeing this video. Now I'm honestly having second thoughts on buying one.
Can't say I'm impressed with the CPU side of things, my 5yr old Samsung A90 phone scores 970 in Geekbench 6 single core. I'd have thought things would have moved on a bit more
They just can't get them in SBC form cheap enough, sucks but. . . I guess snapdragon has strong and expensive contracts
Edit: weird, with how strong that cpu *seems* like it should be, maybe some of the GPU workload ought to be offloaded onto the CPU
To be honest, that's kind of impressive. I would not expect an SD855 to score that high.
@@TakiUdon i tested my zenfone 6 with SD855 and it scores 965 single core and 2562 multi
You're comparing a $200+ phone that doesn't include built in controller? 🤔
I cant wait for a review after the OTA update, want to see how bad the screen is after the color balancing, hopefully it's not too bad.
also I really hope the trigger sensitivity/dead zone can be improved
As much as I'd like a symmetrical layout, I'll stick with my Odin 2 Max.
It's nice that there's more competition and variety on the market though.
