I just tested the KQI3 in the NIU Toronto Store today. After owning several Apollo scooters, I must say the build quality really exceeded my expectations for a beginner scooter. The 9.5 in. air tires really absorb all the bumps on the road well, even without suspensions. The 350w motor performs really well and has plenty of power for acceleration. The deck has plenty of space for my feet. The mechanical brakes feel very smooth and has responsive stopping power. I specially like the design of the head light. It reminds me of the arc reactor of Iron Man. The folding stem of the scooter is top notch. It is extremely easy to use and yet provide a very sturdy feel, when riding in top speed. Majority of the wiring are well hidden within the stems of the scooter. The overall appearance of the scooter has a modern look and yet very practical. I would strongly recommend this scooter to everyone who are looking for a well build scooter. In my opinion, NIU has just set a new standard for owning a beginner scooter. Also, honourable mention to the friendly store staff, Kyle who patiently explained everything to me. The test drive was awesome. I really enjoyed the excellent customer experience today. :)

Great scooter for the price. I recently bought an almost new KQi3 Pro from a local private seller for $500 CAD. The scooter has 200km on it and is working properly with no physical damage. I really like the outstanding build quality, the iconic head light and the patented folding mechanism. The only take away is no suspension, but the 9.5 inch tubeless tires seems to absorb a lot more bumps, when comparing to other scooters with suspensions. The top speed of 20 MPH is enough for me to used as a daily commuter. NIU has done an excellent job to deliver a reliable scooter with good ride quality. I strongly recommend it to anyone who is looking for a beginner scooter. Also, the regen automatically kicks in, when l release the throttle. This feature will reduce a lot of mechanical brake wear.

Love my KQi2 Pro, thanks to you guys, build quality is outstanding, and it does what it needs to do very well.
    Their app is definitely top-notch.
One of my favourite features is the app-less lock option which can be enabled/disabled (press and hold power button to turn off, and keep pressing it down for 3 more seconds to enable app-lock mode, which requires app to unlock).
I'll be looking closely at all their offerings from now on.

Thanks for this great video and solid review! I just bought kqi3pro from best buy. It arrives Thursday (today is Saturday). All I hear are great things. I have seen 2 different ppl, on separate occasions, on the philly Septa bus, and asked them if they'd buy it again. Both answered in less than one second with an enthusiastic YES. One was a large man, 220 lbs with a tool box, and the other was a 120 lb lady. Both carried theirs folded no problem. The man, my size, schlepping a similar load to and fro work, swore it's even better than his motorcycle. So, I spent the 1k. It was a scary purchase but I'm super stoked!!!! The warranty is clutch for relieving some of the price point anxiety. Your review is comforting, also. Salute. Thanks.

Should be one click to light and two for switching modes. When you are riding 18mph and want to turn lights on with one hand, youll definetly miss and change mode, wich will automatically e-brake and cut the throttle since it wants to get at e-save 15km/h speed. Saying from Kqi2 Pro experience

I own a black kqi3 pro and it’s been great when it works I’ve named it in the app error101 because at least once a week it throws an error code but then fixes it self but one time I had to pay 65 bucks to replace my motor brushes because I wore them out after only 300 miles on the odometer I’m now at 700 miles and going strong

  • @dafuce
    @dafuce 2 ปีที่แล้ว +10

Nice to hear that it has great braking, it makes me kinda regret going for the Kqi2 pro. Its "small" front drum brake doesnt make the cut and rear e-brake only engages at certain speed, quite agresively, locking the rear wheel. Plus sometimes gets confused and has a lot of lag or "ghosting". I hope that an OTA firmware upgrade can aliviate it

    • @ESG-ElectricScooterGuide
      @ESG-ElectricScooterGuide  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Hi Daniel,
Have you tried adjusting the front brake cable on your KQi2 Pro? Ours works really well, but does take strong hands to get the most from it. With a tighter brake cable, you'll get more front brake and less rear since I think the KQi2 Pro has the same variable regen setup (I'll double check). The KQi2 Pro does have a smoother ride and slightly better handling, but the difference is subtle.

@@ESG-ElectricScooterGuide Hey Paul, I got a KQi2 pro as well and I'm also having some brake problems (I love the scooter overall though, it's amazing). How are you able to adjust the brake cable? And also, recently, at the start of each scooter session, my brakes don't seem to be working properly. It feels like it needs time to "warm up" before they work at 100%. Is that normal?

I have the Ninebot Max and KQi3 Pro. The Ninebot Max is broken because of a electrical problem and is currently out of warranty so I needed a new scooter, found the KQi3 Pro and it looked super nice so purchased it.
The KQi3 Pro is better than the Ninebot Max in just about every conceivable way. The only thing that's worse, of course, is the smaller battery. Even then, I don't notice much a difference in my range, maybe the Max goes an extra 10% further based on my testing. The KQi3 Pro still has plenty of range.
    KQi3 Pros over Ninebot Max:
    Cheaper
    Much better looking
Better build quality(by quite a bit IMO)
    Better brakes
    Better headlight
Better speed/acceleration(more snappy and fun to ride)
    Wider tires
    Better Phone App
Wider handlebars(and better grips and thumb lever by far)
    Better deck
Better fender placement(Ninebot Max fender breaks constantly and needs replacement, KQi3 Pro is near impossible to break
Much better folding design and less cables sticking out
No noise when riding(shaking, rattling etc)
Ninebot Max pros over KQi3 Pro:
    Bigger battery
So yes, the KQi3 Pro is a real Ninebot Max killer. The Ninebot Max was great for it's time but that time is over. And the KQi3 Pro is cheaper!
NIU did an amazing job with the KQi3 Pro, the KQi3 Max will just be insane and hopefully they plan to release even better versions in the future.

well, don't want to curb your enthusiasm, but tires are not wider (in fact smaller), deck is not wider, there are not less cables but more, and the rest is rather equal as reported in the review:) seen 20.3kg value, all other offers in the market, checked 100s of reviews and specs, and bought Ninebot as the city scooter today as there's still nothing better, but i drive proper suspension scooter mostly:)

I'm still shopping for my 1st future scooter purchase. So all of these video your team makes are super helpful and highly informative. Thank you for all the hard work and fun you put in to making these videos for us.
One question I have is in regards to the needing to kick to start feature. Let's say a particular scooter has the option to disable or enable that feature. Would you get increased driving range if the needing to kick to start was enabled vs disabled?
And being pro's in the scooter industry. You seem like the best people to ask. I'm wanting something that goes 18-20mpg. Doesn't suck on hills or need annoying tire changes and can handle mild dirt path off roading.
What would be your top two or three picks meeting those criteria?
Even if you don't answer. I appreciate all your content and look forward to more. Thank You!

Btw, I’m big guy, 6’2 and around 227lb and I can get max speed (that shows on display) 32km without problems carrying my backpack that probably adds a good weight and uphill (not too inclined) the lowest I got was 25km and to me that is pretty good. I haven’t tested the range but have done some short trips around 10km and the app still showing a good range left. Overall great first scooter, I just suggest to adjust the tires psi to 48 or even 50, that was a huge improvement to my ride.

    Good review.
I didn’t know about the “incremental” regenerative braking. I knew it had regen, but thought it was oddly surprisingly smooth compared to my Zero 10x and Joyor Y7-s regen which both come on hard.
My KQI3 Pro came with kick start , but I was able to turn it off. I don’t remember if there was a p-setting adjustment or if it was in a update. Same thing with cruise control.. cruise control didn’t work until a update or something.
It’s a very satisfying scooter. A larger battery would be nice , so very much looking forward to a future review on a KQI3 “Max” version !

I've loved this scooter for 3 months now, but last night experienced ANOTHER ELECTRONICS PROBLEM, error 03. I have heard that there is a way to access higher-than-maximum speeds and zero start from a special combination of throttle/brake presses while standing still, hopefully modders will find out how to access the controller thru a custom apk or arduino some time soon so that we can just do whatever we want with it.

I would like to provide some further insight, especially regarding the KQi3 Sport, which was not reviewed. I basically ordered a KQi2 Pro and what arrived at my doorstep was a KQi3 Sport. NIU is aware of their mistake and they have yet to tell me whether I have to send the scoot back or if I can keep the free upgrade.
Basically here in Europe all 3 NIU electric scooters are locked to a max speed of 25km/h (15mph) due to regulations. Any scooter that goes above this speed would require a DMV registration, a number plate, insurance and a drivers license to operate. (in Germany this is even stricter with a max of 20km/h (12mph))
In my country (Austria) there is not only the 25km/h max speed but also a max wattage of 600W, which could render the KQi3 Pro with its peak wattage of 700W illegal to operate without the requirements mentioned above. So in terms of speed the KQi3 Pro has no advantage here. It will also be much more costly to operate as a legally registered fully fletched vehicle rather than just a scooter. The Range and dual disk breaking system is of course a big pro for the KQi3 Pro.
I still think with all the legal shortcomings for the KQi3 Pro in my country, the KQi3 Sport feels like this awkward middle child. The 'Malcolm in the middle' of scooters. Being a KQi3 it is bigger, heavier and bulkier than it's little brother the KQi2 Pro, it also costs 100€ more, and has no added range benefit, all it does have that beats the KQi2 Pro is a front disk brake, while the rear still uses an electric drum brake like the KQi2 Pro (and of course the same app feature set of the KQi3 Pro) but because of that disk brake it has exposed brake wire on the stem base, which the KQi2 Pro boasted about not having. additionally the KQi2 Pro has bigger tires.
My advice for European viewers (especially for my fellow Austrians) is that if you do not have the correct license for the KQi3 Pro, get the KQi2 Pro unless you really really need that disk brake in the front and KQi3 features that the KQi3 Sport has and are willing to sacrifice compactness, tire size and an extra 100€ for it. If you do have a license and are willing to go through the hoops of bureaucracy or live in a country where 700W still doesn't require one, the KQi3 Pro is the perfect be all end all commuter scooter for under 1000€, yet the KQi2 Pro is the price to performance KING in my honest opinion.

The built in speedometer is not accurate - it registers "32 km/h" well before that speed is even reached. In fact, most of the time the speedometer is reading 32 km/h the actual speed is around 27 or 28 km/h. The range you are measuring is likely also inaccurate. Try using a GPS app to see what your real numbers are.

@@noisyboy112 The KQi3 Pro was available for $700 Canadian (delivered within 3 days!) on Amazon Prime Day July 12-13. Its build quality is insane (though the spring on my charge port cover needs to be replaced) and it apparently has a 2 year warranty. NIU is simply crushing the competition with its scooters. I ordered the KQi3 Pro and the Ninebot Max G30 from Amazon. The Pro is so impressive that I will probably be cancelling the backorder of the Ninebot Max. The only significant downside is that the KQi3 weighs 45 pounds.
It will be interesting to see what kind of scooters NIU releases over the next year and whether or not other manufacturers will be able to compete with them. The competition is going have to start slashing their prices for scooters currently in the $500 - $1200 price range.

As a Ninebot Max owner I have to say that this looks gorgeous and well made. I still think the Max G30 is a better deal, as long as you can flash it with custom firmware, which can’t be done on some newer models without a controller swap. The CFW alone will make the scooter much nicer to ride, disabling the energy recovery which makes it break on its own when not accelerating, increasing top speed by about 3kmh and increasing torque and acceleration according to your specifications, it feels much sportier than stock, with small to no change in range from my experience, and with such big battery, it doesn’t matter much.
I would suggest new riders to look for a second hand Ninebot Max, they are very durable and easy to replace most parts, you can grab one for likely half of retail price. I have an external battery pack and can reach up to 43kmh (26.7mi) now, and it still rides stable and brakes well. I simply love the Ninebot Max and couldn’t recommend it more

Hi, what is the range that showed in the app after a full charge? I saw it shows 50km in the video, and they claimed it can go 50km on the website. But my kqi3 pro only showes 40km in the app after a full charge.

I noticed a distinct attempt to skirt range distances in this review. I don't know if that's because you're still in testing, but there were very few metrics for me to make an informed decision based on this video.
I have been feverishly looking for an electric scooter that can outperform a gasoline powered engine while providing me a ridiculously long range. I know that I'm asking for miracles, and that the real long-range beasts are several thousands of dollars (putting them at the price of a scooter or car), but I am representing a silent market that is waiting for technology to catch up to the hype.
Many people feel forced into getting a license if they want to travel faster than a pedal-bike, and that's where e-scooters shine! So give us range, quick recharge capabilities, and powerful motors for icy hill climbing in the winter. If I'm skidding out on a busy bridge on a chilly autumn morning as I ride to work, I'm going to instantly hate whatever company I purchased my scooter from... or e-scooters in general.
NIU electrics are at the forefront of this industry and should SERIOUSLY be looking into heat-capturing tech to make scooters a year-round vehicle for the cold-climate market. Otherwise someone else will take up the mantle and dominate the Northern market.
We need an all-weather ATV in electric. That's the untapped market. It's not the motocross enthusiasts that will buy them, but the delivery services like SkiptheDishes and UberEats. Not the trail riders, but the commuters who have to get to-and-from work in mid-winter. That's where gas-powered engines will continue to dominate if the electric market doesn't smarten up!
We don't all live in warm-weather climates, and batteries are notorious for bogging out at low temperatures. This is why electric vehicles are far less likely to sell in Canada at the moment. Therefore we need insulated batteries, and we need to redirect the heat from the motors to the battery cases. We need easy clip-on ski mods after that for extra stability on icy terrain without neutering the turning capacity of the scooter completely! We'll also need winter tires or tank treads to power through freshly fallen snow....
THAT'S where the e-scooter companies should be focusing their resources. Perhaps a hybrid electric scooter? Perhaps a kick scooter with trailer towing capabilities? These are the things we want. Most of us DON'T want cars AT ALL! We want year-round riding. We want motorcycle vibes without the costs, without the licenses and other government cash grabs.
NIU needs to respond to customer requests rather than tell us what we want. We are the one with cash in hand, and it's we who choose where we spend it. Be wise NIU and give us what we ask for, not what's easy to build.

I felt like we put a ton of detail about range (20.9 miles), how the range test ended and what performance was like leading up to the end of the test, how I was riding, which scooters it beat for range, and by how much, and also which scooters (Max) beat it.

@@ESG-ElectricScooterGuide Paul, I noticed a distinct attempt to put too much information about range distances in this review. I don't know if that's because you did way more detailed testing than any other reviewer on TH-cam, but there were too many metrics for me to fail to make an informed decision based on this video.

Jonathan Gauthier: You are demanding that manufacturers spend millions of dollars developing a niche product primarily to cater to your interests. That's not realistic. Longer range inexpensive scooters are inevitable once battery technology catches up. You may have noticed that even multi-billion dollar auto manufacturers have been struggling for years to make even incremental improvements in range.
How many people do you think would buy an all-weather electric icy hill climbing scooter with heat-capturing tech, clip-on ski mods and tank treads to power through freshly fallen snow? 1? 3? 100? Tank treads on bike trails and city streets? Powered by tiny laptop batteries that already struggle to overcome even small hills? How many people currently commute in snow in winter? Very few. How many of them would prefer a small tired scooter for winter commuting instead of a bicycle equipped with winter tires?
