- This is the last video in our Film February series! It has been so much fun exploring different neighborhoods in Berlin each week and trying out different film stocks. This week we went to Neukölln and shot Portra 400.
We really hope that you have enjoyed the series and have been able to learn with me as I continue to get to know my Canon A-1 better and better. We appreciate all the support and love you've shown us in the comments. Focusing on capturing the city around us has definitely made our February better and now that the sun is peaking back into our life we can feel the city waking up from it's winter hibernation.

Hi! Great photos and video as always. however, I think that your scanner seems to have a bias towards magenta/red tones in the images, as they all have a slight red colour cast. you could perhaps remove that by adjusting the tones in Lightroom as I do since my scanner goes too far with the greens. Just a thought!
Unless of course the red look is what you are going for

After watching this vid I went to google and I found out Berlin has 12 neighborhoods so that means you guys can make two months of film video's more :) I was very happy to see a new nice video of shooting film in my favourite city every week! About a week ago I bought an A-1 with a motor drive ma and I cant wait to see how the results are. I hope to return to Berlin this summer and shoot some nice rolls. Greetz from Holland!

Hi, just a little experiment for you guys. If you double expose the photo, try to make a Portrait of somebody, which has only the face and the sky in frame, than overexpose the sky. Than take a picture of a texture which what u want to fill in the face. The overexposed sky cant be further exposed so the texture will only be visible on the face, pretty cool effect

I just found you while I was searching how to videos for analogue camera beginners and I loved your videos! Especially these film february videos are just amazing! :) I just bought a point and shoot camera to see if I really like it or it's just a whim, and now that I'm almost through my first roll I'm definitely sure it's not a whim, and the idea that I have to wait for a week to get my film developed is so exciting! Even the waiting process itself is very exciting and it makes photos and the moment so much more valuable than taking a picture instantly with a digital camera or a phone. I definitely want to have more power of controlling the exposure etc, sooo I already started saving money in a nutella jar with a sticker on it that says "CANON AE1" :D Your videos are so encouraging and inspiring! For that I wanted to thank you properly, I hope I did. Thank you a lot, and this is literally my first comment on youtube hahah. Have happy, inspiring and beautiful days! :)

Didnt saw it the first time looking.
I was never a big fan of Portra film. It's fine for what it was designed for ... sort of soft, pastel images for wedding photos but I'm in love with Ektar. I'm quite spoiled with the razor sharp images from my Canon 5D cameras and Ektar is the only film I've found that provides comparably sharp, saturated images. In the pre-digital era I shot a lot of Portra VC, which was probably a similar formula but certainly not as sharp as Ektar. I just got some of the new Kodak Ektachrome, which I also used to shoot a lot of, but I haven't finished the first roll yet. I expect it will be about the same as Ektar, but probably not as forgiving on exposures. I do love reversal films and I used to have a lot of fun developing E6 in the kitchen sink, but with today's film scanners and digital darkroom software, Ektar is probably the best value. I do shoot other films. Cheap Kodak and Fuji films can give you that old fashioned soft, desaturated, slightly grainy film look but I do tend to go back to Ektar for "keeper" shoots.
When taking double exposures, first expose for the brightest part of the sky and then place the person in front of it, for maximum effect. The second scene fill appear only on that person's face.
The second shot appears on the darkest parts of the first shot, take that in mind, it's fun to play with :)
Yeah, i was going to mention that too. Some nice photos there that could have been better had the first exposure been brighter.

Yes, you are right. And depending on the ratio of shadows and highlights of the scene you should underexpose it sometimes.

aaah finally! I was looking forward to this video all week since you were going to make use of the button. So glad it worked out for you! And I was actually interested in seeing how the Portra 400 looked. I am currently photographing in colour (fujifilm superia 200) with my A1 and just finished and developed my black and white film (ilford delta 400), which turned out amazing. Will be testing more kinds in the near future. Did you find a favourite film yet?

I just started shooting 35mm film on an old camera my dad bought new as a young man. It captured most of my childhood, and I'm stoked to keep the memories going! I stumbled across you two by looking up some 35mm videos on youtube. I've definitely fallen down a rabbit hole and have been binge watching your stuff and really enjoying catching up on your adventures!
Along with the cinematography, art style, and content, I'm really enjoying the music you guys use in your videos. It's awesome that you cite it all at the end of your videos. But have you thought of maybe making a spotify playlist of the songs for easy access? Could be youtube videos or any other music medium, apple, google, etc.

Ah what a beautiful story! Great series though. Portra really seems to bring out the reds and greens. Not sure if i'd shell out for a roll though as it's super expensive. Good shots though.
I was going to mention the double exposures, but there's a comment below from Nina Hype that explains it already. I just think there was some really cool potential but it was lost in the darker exposures.
However, the double of your friend back to back was awesome!

I see that you found how to compensate for the cameras exposure, would you try going all manual since you already know where the camera was lacking?
We usually just stick to aperture priority mode to keep things fast, but we realized the real problem was just setting the exposure on the part of the image we wanted to expose and then recomposing, but its all sorted now : ) PS we have a new video about Iceland if you wanna check it out! --Lou

Hey Ashley! Sorr yfor the delayed response - yes you point the camera where you want light meter to take the measurement and then hold the button. This saves that light meter so you can point the camera somewhere else without it changing . Hope that helps :) - Dana

how do you grade your videos? amazing
we have quite the workflow: we shoot RAW files using magic lantern raw hack, then those files get converted to Cinema DNG sequences using the RAWMagic converter (25 dollars in the app store) then they get imported into Davinci Resolve Lite (free online) and then we color grade them by making them flat and then apply Hunter's Alexa LUT, then they get exported as DNxHD files in the highest possible quality level and then we edit those in Avid MC where they are the preferred compressed video format. Once the edit is done and the video is on TH-cam Lou deletes the Cinema DNG sequences and the RAW files because we can't afford the amount of hard drive space keeping both those would entail--it's usually about 800GB per video, but once that's all deleted the DNxHD files are actually pretty small so its always less than 100GB per video, sometimes only like 20-30. So yeah, that's the workflow as of now, hope that helps a little! - Dana

best cafes are def Black Sheep Cafe (facebook.com/pages/Black-Sheep-Cafe/931249513636346 ) their food is delicious and its run by amazing women (audie and lucy!) and they even brew their own kombucha. The space is beautiful - def high on my list of places to visit
also Two Planets Cafe (facebook.com/twoplanetsberlin/) a good friend of ours runs this place - Nick - and it has a great vibe. its on the smaller side, but they have delicious toast (my fav is the avocado) and do juices, smoothies, and coffee too.
Oo and No Milk Today is another great cafe we love!

Berlin has this incredible scene of vegan popup dinners and brunchs and depending on your schedule it could be really fun for you to check out one of the events. They're much more personal than just going to a typical restaurant and you will get a great feel for the berlin startupy vibe :)

If the weather is nice Klunkerkranich is a MUST! Its a rooftop bar in Neukoln ... and rent a bike for sure! Ride around Tempelhof, see the Wall, as for neighborhoods to not miss definitely check out Kreuzberg, Neukoln, and Friedrichshain.

Does it matter which order the double-exposure shots are taken? or is it just dependent on the settings? Is it worth lowering the ISO for both shots or underexposing?

Could you explain what the little button that someone told you to use does?
It basically just allows you to stop the light meter from changing so you can move the camera without affecting the exposure of the photo. Hope that helps :) - Dana

What’s going on with your scans man? Your colors seem to be of by quit a bit....
No clue, the white balance is really hard to fix in lightroom cause the scans come in all funky, need to play with the settings a bit but never have time to really get into it! ---Lou
