    This video definitely challenged me during the filming process. I had no idea that our film camera's battery was dying, so I kept having moments where I would try to take a photograph and then when I pressed the shutter wouldn't go. Everything felt like it was moving too fast and I wasn't able to compose the shots I wanted. I think I was also a bit tired from sleeping in the van (broken arm + sleeping bag can be a tricky situation for a proper night's rest). But luckily after a little pep talk from Lou, I realized there was no need to put pressure on myself to take "good or even great" photos. The whole point of these videos is just to have fun! And that is how the day shifted as we moved into the metro and then I finally felt calm and ready to enjoy the photos however they ended up turning out.

    Question of the Week: Do you ever find yourself flustered or wanting to quit in the middle of a project/outing? How do you refocus and move past it, so you actually enjoy the rest of your day? Also, Lou wants me to ask if any of you liked my little joke about youtube thumbnails? But what I think he really wants to know is do you guys watch the videos all the way to the end?? :) :) :)

    Loved the bubbles at the beginning, and seeing the roll of film play out over the video. But truly loved going over to your website and reading the blog posts as to what to do. Reading the 40 things to do, made me feel like I was with you at the shoot!!!! Well done!

    Great shots. The Canon AE-1, AE-1 Program and the A-1 (in this video) all need a battery to fire the shutter and run the light meter. Great images Dana and video work Lou, your editing and soundtrack are spot on. And don't worry about the low shutter speeds. Most people can take a steady shot down to 1/30th. Anything below that you need to be steady or use a tripod. Whenever I need the inspiration to go shoot some film, I watch a couple of your videos and it helps me to remember to just take the shot, sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. It's the process that matters and the fun of creating something. Even in the less than "perfect" shots I find something I like.

    • @WildWeRoam
      @WildWeRoam  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for the advice! It turned out to be the battery dieing slowly over the course of a few days which caused the problem! It was hard for Dana to hold the camera steady with only one good arm, but she did a great job! ---Lou

    Man, I love the moment at 4:44. I think this is one of the most beautiful thing I have ever watched from your videos. Why? Because you have two people taking approximatively the same photograph. One in digital, one in analogic. Just after the capture, that’s amazing to see the difference between Dana who appreciates the moment and the guy in the background just looking at his screen to check the picture. That is exactly what I am looking for when I shoot in digital. It gives us the possibility to shoot differently because it directly forces us to think differently, to live differently.

    • @WildWeRoam
      @WildWeRoam  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Jason, couldn't agree more! That's one of my favorite video shots from the whole trip, it actually went on for a lot longer because Dana took much longer composing the shot then people would have the patience for watching ; ) ----Lou

    Ok, I just went to your site to find your 5D3 workflow. It's pretty impressive. First, I own a Canon EOS M, and few months ago I hacked it with Magic Lantern. I tried shooting raw, but since the camera buffer is very small, and my card is very slow, I only get 4 seconds at 1600*650 or so. It takes a while to get it converted and imported into Resolve. Now to think, you do this all the time. Shooting raw, transcoding, editing, rendering. Respect. Deep respect for ya'll !! Also, my Super 8 project failed. Too expensive, and no way to develop film without high shipping costs.

    • @WildWeRoam
      @WildWeRoam  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Anto, glad to hear someone actually checked out the workflow, once its all figured out it doesnt take too long, and luckily we have super fast cards so everything works fine at 1080p, but you're totally right the transcoding part takes a long long time! Sorry to hear about the project falling apart, I also wanted to shoot some super 8 but I figured the cost is probably just way too high to get it developed because my cousin has a nice camera he might give me but I've held off for that reason.. ---Lou

    The metro stations look similar to the ubahn stations in Munich. Take a look online and you'll see some of the awesome designs of them!
    Love the videos, although I often wonder if you guys would benefit from a slightly longer focal length lens. Some of the photos look a little far back and with a lot of negative space. Is it the 50mm lens you use?

    • @WildWeRoam
      @WildWeRoam  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Mark! Thanks for the tip, yeah we use a 50mm, but we probably won't invest in anything new for this camera body because we'd like to just upgrade to medium format at some point when we can afford a better camera ; ) --Lou

    If we need refocus moments, we mostly take the time to look back to the last few days and tell each other what we loved or what made us happy in these days. Slowly you feel the energy coming to refocus and have a fresh start. Oh and just talk about the struggle with each other is very helpful too! ;-)

  • @pepsicolla123

    Hey, guys! Could you offer me some advice, what's the cheapest way of developing film? Do you develop your film in a van :) ? I got my film developed and scanned in photo laboratory, but the whole price was quite expensive. By the way, your videos encouraged me to take up film photography again.

    • @WildWeRoam
      @WildWeRoam  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Developing at home is by far the cheapest, but you have to shoot a lot to make it cheaper since all the chemicals and equipment will cost about 50-100 depending on what you get, so it becomes worth it after a couple rolls not right away! ---Lou

    • @WildWeRoam
      @WildWeRoam  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hmmm, not sure I understand this question, if you mean how do we capture things that are moving quickly, the key is to use a high shutter speed if you want to freeze action, and a slow shutter speed if you want motion blur! ---Lou

      @WildWeRoam  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi there, we use a canon scan mark ii scanner but I can't really recommed it unless you really want a scanner for other projects as well, its a good all round scanner but not fun to work with for film negatives. ---Lou

    • @WildWeRoam
      @WildWeRoam  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Craig, its all quite clean and efficient, but like all large cities there are some homeless people, though quite a lot less than Berlin or NYC, and they don't ask for money quite as aggresively either, but I don't know if they are refugees as well. ---Lou

    Squarespace and others, are SF companies that are going to ruin your town too. Please don't support techies, you can be Independant and do anything.

    • @WildWeRoam
      @WildWeRoam  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah I've been reading about the issues in SF with housing and it certainly seems like a huge mess, but we've also lived in other cities like NYC and Berlin where gentrification unrelated to tech is causing huge problems so I'm not sure it makes sense to blame the industries alone, you need programs like rent control, affordable housing, and to stop landlords from raising rents out of control or these cities will be completely gentrified beyond repair, but its a super complicated issue we ourselves were complicit in so I'm not sure what the best solution is, but at the end of the day we definitely appreciate the support from Squarespace--now that everyone watches youtube with an adblocker theres no revenue anymore from views so it allows us to keep making videos : ) ---Lou

      Yeah, like people have already said, the camera has a built in light meter which seems super accurate, usually we just don't set the exposure level on the right part of the image if it turns out too dark, but in this case that was just because dana couldn't use that special button on the camera because of her broken arm, but all in all the camera metering works great! ---Lou

    When the camera jammed i said to myself "Battery." Not because i'm a smartass, but because it's happened to me a few times. Fine one second, dead the next and it's just like a lock-up or jam.
    Cool vid. How was Moment?

      Hi Dave! It was so so good! And you're totally right about the camera battery, that was our hope as well cause its an easy fix and it all worked out ; ) ---Lou

      I assume you're not developing your own film whilst you're on the road? Are they many places that you can send it too?

      I like how there was a little “mansplaining” section after that (I tend to do that as well 😅)
      Oh and I watched it all to the end!

    I’m searching for a Canon A1 50mm 1,4 but it’s really difficult. Sometimes it’s too expansive or just haven’t the thing I want. This is frustrating ! Your shoots are so beautifuls and inspiring !! Sorry for my english I’m French :p

      Hmmmm, have you tried keh the online store? It really shouldn't cost too much so just keep looking and I'm sure something will turn up : ) ---Lou

      Thanks for your answer !! :) I didn't know the website you gave me, there is no Canon a1 for the moment but maybe later! What do tout think about the objectif 50mm 1.8? I found a lot or Canon A1 generally with this objectif but not with the 1.4 ! Ni France the Canon a1 is generally expensive on the web :(

    • @WildWeRoam
      @WildWeRoam  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I dont think you really need 1.4 vs 1.8, its nearly impossible to focus with unless the object is far away so 1.8 is totally sufficient! ---Lou

    Oh man i was so looking forward for this one. I am at minute 4 now and that Tram Stop at 2.24 is one of the ones we used the most when we lived there, also the ones at Namesti Republicky!

      Hi Dani! How cool : ) Must be fun to see it all again on video in such a different way! We went to those tram stops all the time as well on our trip, the tram is so so convenient and its really fun looking or filming out the window ; ) ---Lou

      By the way! Yes the metro is very beautiful, if you ever vist Moscow this is impressive, Prague to me from the cities I've visited should be 2nd probably. But you know what? The one in Berlin has something, as the one in London is also special, and so many! Nothing cames to mind now, but I will for sure miss some great ones. Oh, and Passeig de Gràcia Station here at Barcelona has new tiles all over and looks georgeous!

      Hahahaha i just re-watched it because a friend and I are back from a trip to Prague-Brno-Ostrava-Katowice since 2 days ago (we went for 5 days) and even we've spent a few time in Prague (day and a half) and it was very cold, yet was great again and re-watching your movie is like being back at some spots.
