@@ChrisPayneHBTWI think it's cuz people like me familiar with his earlier work KNEW a big twist was coming, so when I saw the 1800's setting I immediately predicted that it was actually a modern setting. The only other big focus was the mysterious monsters we never get a good look at, so I even predicted they weren't real. Mind you, it's ONLY cuz I walked in expecting a twist. Had I not known it was an M Night film, I wouldn't have been looking. Betting a lot of people and critics had similar experience. Jmho

Couldn’t agree more. It kind of screwed us up as kids when our dad showed it to us lol. We live in a rural area surrounded by cornfields and forests. Basically the exact setting of this movie. My home county only has like 6000 people in the entire county. Ironically we also have the most UFO sightings per capita in the entire state which is impressive considering how few people there are. But anyway yeah you didn’t go out at night and if you did you begged a sibling to go with you both armed with pocket knives. These days I am strapped locked and loaded when I go outside at night because of this movie. Worst or best case scenario I have protection lol. Likely to be an animal if anything but I am not taking chances 😂😂

What I like about this movie is that the story is apocalyptic, but it focuses on a small cast, away from what may be happening in the major cities if an alien invasion was taking place. That's one of the problems with the movie.... "if" people want to pretend it has any religious undertone; because presumably if Mel Gibson's character thinks that a higher power created everything, then it also created the aliens and therefore if it was putting in place a plan only to save the life of the boy....then that higher power purposefully made a plan to murder the alien that it also created. And it murdered the mother from the family. And it caused lifelong mental suffering to Ray the veterinarian. And it purposefully caused cruelty and killing of dogs or any other animals all over the world just before the invasion, etc. Basically..... the movie can only be appreciated if we stick with our emotional response to the family needing to grieve and unite...... and ignore the entire plot outside that family.

So maybe before making a smart ass comment to make yourself sound smart, take a couple seconds to actually read what was written.

@@dash4800 It reminds me of when the movie 'Deep Impact' came out. It was released not far from 'Armageddon.' People ended up hating it, because it was a story about people, not a disaster movie. The meteor was a plot device, the same way the aliens are in this movie. This movie still chokes me up when they are eating what they think is their last dinner, when Morgan is having the asthma attack, and when Graham is having the last conversation with his wife. The acting is top tier, including the children. And the atmosphere and tension is masterful. I still revisit this movie every couple of years and it still hits me the same.

Many years later after catching this in the cinema when it came out, it did seem odd the aliens were outdone by wood, water and primitive methods. However, what we all missed is the fact our natural resources - wood/trees, water, Indigenous peoples and their knowledge - are our saving grace in times of crisis. It's a subtle nod I missed back then, but I do think this movie is wholly underrated and deserves more recognition for some eerie info we can all admit is relevant today. Please consider watching Arrival and Children of Men if you haven't already.

It is easy to make a crop circle. All you need is a length of rope and a short piece of board. One guy stands at the circle.of the circle you are making hanging on to the rope. The other guy makes a circle around the center guy with the board the you go out a short distance on the rope and circle the center guy again. Keep the rope tight because it is the radius of your circle. If your rope is 15 feet long you end up with a nice circle 30 feet in diameter. This method can be used without turning on a flashlight or lamp. Or you could just ask the movie people how they made their crop circle. Knocking down corn really isn't that hard, pranksters have been doing it for years. Two guys that did it for years even wrote a book about it.

If you aren't booked up on Halloween movies, the scariest movie I ever saw is The Haunting (1963). It was remade - poorly - in 1999. Find the one starring Julie Harris. So creepy, mostly because you NEVER see the ghost. Honestly, that's more terrifying than seeing it.

Glad to hear someone else mention the dinner as being such an emotional scene, I choke up with every re-watching. The children crying, then the father, then the father pulling the brother into the circle seems to encapsulate the sheer terror the family was experiencing and was about to endure.

As I usually write in reactions to this movie, no one can play devastation like Mel Gibson. In this scene, he’s a man absolutely terrified for his family, overwhelmed ,and he can barely hold it together, but he has to be the strong one for all their sakes. Makes me cry every time.
(Fun fact: in that scene, they shot Abigail Breslin's coverage first, and they were all amazed at her performance and the actual tears that they all knew they were, for one, off to a fantatstic start, and also that they all had to really bring it next for each their turns in front of the camera.)

“People break down into two groups. When they experience something lucky, group number one sees it as more than luck, more than coincidence. They see it as a sign, evidence, that there is someone up there, watching out for them. Group number two sees it as just pure luck. Just a happy turn of chance.
I'm sure the people in group number two are looking at those fourteen lights in a very suspicious way. For them, the situation is a fifty-fifty. Could be bad, could be good. But deep down, they feel that whatever happens, they're on their own. And that fills them with fear. Yeah, there are those people. But there's a whole lot of people in group number one. When they see those fourteen lights, they're looking at a miracle. And deep down, they feel that whatever's going to happen, there will be someone there to help them. And that fills them with hope. See what you have to ask yourself is what kind of person are you? Are you the kind that sees signs, that sees miracles? Or do you believe that people just get lucky? Or, look at the question this way: Is it possible that there are no coincidences?”

Yes, as suggested, you must see "Close Encounters of the Third Kind". Another obscure alien movie I like is 2009's "Knowing", starring Nicholas Cage. And of course, you should start at the very beginning and see 1951's "The Thing From Another World" (the first time the term "flying saucer" was ever used in a movie), and 1951's "The Day The Earth Stood Still". Both filmed in black & white, but both very highly rated, and two of my favorite movies in any genre.

  • @magicmike7198

For me, this 'intimate' film works because of the performance of the actors. From the get go, the way Mel Gibson and Joaquin Phoenix's character react when they hear the little girl scream got me. The way Joaquin jumps and falls out of bed, I recognized myself in him. The way he reacts when he sees the alien on TV, the way Mel Gibson helps his son regain breathing, the way he worries about ''no longer hearing his children's voices'', the performance of the actors is what makes this film rich, in my opinion. And the sublime music of James Newton-Howard which completes the whole thing, especially the piece called ''The Hand Of Fate Part 2'' which can be found on the soundtrack and which we hear towards the end of the film. It is, I believe, this director's best film.

Love this film; I remember when it came out, it got a lot of push back from people because of how everything fit together at the end, but that was the message. God sacrificed Graham's wife so that his message 'swing away' would be indelibly left in his mind, even though God knew it would make Graham lose his faith. Then the asthma, the glasses of water, and Merrill swinging away would come together like the pieces of a jigsaw puzzle that were put in place as a plan to save the family and restore Graham's faith. And this is coming from an atheist, but hey, a good story is a good story. This is a good story, and a great film.

All of the "random" things that happened that helped them win the day were God putting things in place for them to win. So the wife says, "Swing away," because of what was going on at that time and then God used it as a second message for what was going to happen.

Explain crop circles (if not alien).
Do you have a short two-by-four and a rope or a detached swing?
They walk around in a circle, stepping on the wood to flatten the crop then use the attached rope to lift the wood slightly to move on to the next step of the design.
Walk in a straight line or around in concentric circles.
Because they do it overnight instead of during the middle of the day, the crop has enough moisture to bend instead of break most of the time.
If you can draw those crop circles on a piece of paper, they can design it onto a landscape.
I really hope these ignorant questions don’t last throughout the movie otherwise I’ll be dippin’ out.
It would have taken you 10 seconds to google it, to see how some people have been caught and explained how they did it.
    They are ALL man-made designs.

Crops circles are made by humans using basic trigonometry and simple triangulateration. The tools used are crude planks, reel tape measures, and rope or string. It’s just old school land surveying techniques.
If you understand these concepts, you’ll understand that seemingly complex crop circles can easily be made by a small group of people in one night.
Also, corn has a very weak stalk and is easy to knock over.

I recommend you watch Alien (1979) with Sigourney Weaver. One of the best sci-fi movies ever. Edge of Tomorrow(2014) with Tom Cruise is another good one. Galaxy Quest(1999) with Tim Allen and Sigourney Weaver is a great comedy sci-fi movie. Gravity(2013) with Sandra Bullock is also very good but not really a traditional sci-fi movie but it takes place in space.
