Old TV used to start and end the day with the national anthem. When the anthem came on late at night you know the tv stations were finished broadcasting for the night and all you would get is static in the tv.
"They're Heeree"!! Haunting, suspenseful and overall a great movie...RIP Dominique Dunne & Heather O'Rourke🕊
The tree and the clown were Robbie's two biggest fears. The closet was Carol Anne's biggest fear (needing the nightlight to be on so the monsters couldn't come out to get her at night). The Poltergeist used their fears against them to distract the family and grab Carol Anne.
Makes so much sense now!

Thought I would share some facts with you concerning this movie.
1. Real paranormal events happened on the sets of this movie.
2. The more terrifying part.
Those skeletons you saw popping up in the end.
Those were 100% real corpses.
As they could not afford props.
So, they got actual skeleton's from medical science labs. Where people donate the dead for research purposes.
Yes, it was done 100% legally and no, none of the actors knew until after.
3. You're way off base on why this happened. In order to understand you NEED to see Poltergeist II: The Other Side.
There's also a part III as well.
But it involves the aunt and uncle with carolanne. That's all I'll say.
But part II directly ties into the first movie and gives details.
I promise it's just as skin crawlingly creepy.
If the clown was one of his biggest fears then why did they have a clown toy for him in his room and his room was near the tree in the window. LOL.
@@alricaneshamaI hope they don’t watch Poltergeist 2. In my opinion, it makes the story much less scary.
@@alricaneshama Sadly, Part II is so inferior to the first one. I've watched the original several times over the years and only seen the second maybe 2X. That was enough.
I think the relationship between the mom and dad and the fact the siblings cared for each other helped the movie a lot. It occurs to me that in a lot of horror movies the characters are either terrible people or at least mostly self centered people and you just can't invest emotionally in them. You two (and most people who watched this movie) wanted that family to survive. We felt relief when we thought it was over. We then again cared if they made it out. And finally we were so happy when they check into the motel. And everybody laughed in the theatre when they threw out the tv. Everybody went home satisfied and relieved.
This is what makes me appreciate the movie most. In most horror movies and even regular films from the 80’s, the parents are apathetic or authoritarian, and the older siblings are horrible to the younger siblings. This family seems normal, open, and honest dealing with a crazy ass situation. Stands out for me.
My grandmother was good friends with Zelda Rubenstein, the short woman near the end, who was the ghost medium. I remember when we celebrated her 60th birthday at a restaurant in Pasadena. Such a wonderful woman, and so full of energy!
Oh that's great. I loved that character, she was bad-ass 😊❤
she got to be an eternal face of humans vs the supernatural! centuries into the future, people will see her face and the good job she had done contributing to a classic in the genre
Oh how cool! Tangina was cool.
A pity Laurence R Harvey never met her. Both are the exact same height and both actors. He would had charmed her
That is so cool.
I have watched this movie a hundred times and will watch it a 100 times more.
The cast and acting is stellar and bring a sense of reality to the extraordinary.
Zelma was without the breakout star in this movie and her performance of the character she plays is with us now for Al eternity
The ultimate ghost story!
The movie is said to be cursed as the skeletons used in the swimming pool scene were real.
After actress JoBeth Williams was helped out of the pool by Steven Spielberg, 10 seconds later, a light fixture fell off the ceiling and landed in the pool.
Both Williams and Spielberg learned that if they stayed in the pool longer, they would have been killed.
Dominique Dunne, Dana, was strangled by her ex boyfriend in September 1982, which left her brain dead, forcing her parents to pull the plug. She was 22 years old.
Heather O'Rourke, Carol Anne, died from stenosis and septic shock in January 1988, during the filming of Poltergeist 3. It was released in June 1988.
Yep these are straight facts !!!!
I was going to comment on these facts as well. Extra chapters of the creepiness.
It was cheaper to buy them from a medical university than to make them.
It's said in the little kids room was a super bowl 88 poster and the day of the super bowl 88 is the day Heather fell ill .....very creepy if true about the poster
The actor who played the worker helping himself to the soup on the stove was also a murder victim.
Yes, it's a scary movie, but it's also a *family* movie. The family had each other's backs, and no one was left behind. They worked as a unit, didn't yell or argue with each other, just did what had to be done and took care of each other. It's a great "first horror" movie when you're an almost teen, but an even better one when you're a parent.
Even as a kid this wasn’t scary! It was a live action cartoon. Jays just a coward
@@rileyandmikewe’re all extremely impressed that you were able to surmount this barometer of bravery. Those of us cowards scared by this when we were kids salute your obvious superiority, lol.
Thanks for absolutely zero contribution to the discussion and significantly lowering the average IQ of the thread. We stand in awe on both accounts…
This was NOT a family movie and was never advertised as such.
The fact that SS had done ET, how could this be bad?
@@jonlate4581they mean the story is very family oriented. Not that you can sit with your kids and watch it 😂
@@rileyandmikewhat's wrong with you
I knew this one was gonna scare ya'll pretty good. Carol Ann's line of "They're here!" is one of the most famous lines in movie history.
This film holds up so well after 41 years. One of the most amazing theater experiences I ever had. And what always appealed to me is that this is a thinking person's scary movie. Intelligent, well-explained, thought-provoking. An absolute classic.
Facts! Oh God. My 51 year old just said that LOL
Well the only problem is no TV channel signs off anymore so the entire idea of ghost static could never happen. The best defense against this ghost. 😊
Hate to shit on ya cause I love you guys but who’s requesting these Movies? Hasn’t been a good one since I am legend
@ConnorFutrell excuse me sir...the Thing is a CLASSIC.Poltergeist is a good family horror but not super frightening.
@@ConnorFutrelln 😅qw
The reason this family was the only one affected was because Carol Anne was born in the house, they mention this in the movie. Plus, it will probably have already been mentioned in the comments that the skeletons in the pool scene were taken from actual human beings. They were purchased from a medical supply company, because it cost less than creating fake skeletons or purchasing pre-made skeleton replicas. Also, JoBeth Williams who played the mom did not know this until the shoot was finished. Love the reaction.😊
yes but a CURSE? That is not only stupid but disrespects the people who died. Beck KNEW he had cancer before he played Caine, the guy who played Taylor had a heart attack and Heather was a victim of malpractice being treated from Cromes when she really had a twisted bowl. Dana was the 1st and most tragic because she was murdered by her Ex B/F 2 Years before stalking laws passed and he was stalking her for MONTHS before it happened. None of the deaths were supernatural and happen each and every day but when it comes to this movie Idiots claim "CURSE" This is not even proof of a curse short of natural deaths for 2, Human error on LA Hospitals part and a tragic crime. People are so gullable and fall for every BS to explain what their tiny brains cant
Na, I heard one skeleton was found to be real but the rest were props, people only found out later that one of their 'props' was in fact real.
@@andybricks576it’s true. All of the skeletons in the pool were real from a med school in the area. The fake ones were the ones in the caskets that shot up out of the ground and kitchen, etc.
And none of the cast were told about the real bodies until after the scenes were done
@@flatcapmanThere's nothing like someone who insults people in order to make their own argument, just saying. Read your own post again to see the multiple insults.
This movie made me feel literally every human emotion possible. Fear. Love. Joy. Terror. Humor. Disgust. You name it, Poltergeist gave it to me.
Please check out"RM 1408". You guys will both regret watching it. Lol.
Same here! All of it!
Sadly, two of the child actors in this died young. The little blond girl,Heather O’ Rourke died at age 12 and Dominique Dunn(the teenage sister) was murdered by her boyfriend just before her 23rd birthday.
This movie scared the heck out of me! Love watching your reactions!
Didn't the boy die too? I thought he died young too?
Heather was my youngest nephew's crush.....her death was very sad. And Dominique's too.....both were so young. 😢
@@angelabowman1614 no,that was Oliver Robins and he is 52 years old now.👻🫢😳😁
And the saddest part is Dunn's MURDERER only served 2 and half years in prison and was set free, to live his life to this day!
@@lalareal180he was a chef in a popular restaurant - the dunne family had helpers walking around with signs with Dominiques picture telling everyone that their food was being made by her murderer. They finally fired their chef!!
@@angelabowman1614 no. he is very much alive and well - is even on social platforms. He just didnt act for the longest time. Being in the movie affected him more than anyone knew.
I'm 70 years old, and I am still affected by The Exorcist. No movie has ever bothered me like that one. Just thinking about it cause shivers up my spine.
I was just telling a friend, that is the one movie I CAN NOT watch to this day! I saw the re-release when I was in high school and I slept with a light on for about a month.
"...I've seen The Exorcist about 167 times and it just keeps getting funnier every time I see it."
I remember Poltergeist being one of the few horror/suspense movies on the list of "Films Everyone Needs to See." Coincidentally, the other big one on the list, that wasn't a Hitchcock movie, was The Exorcist.
Especially the uncut version .When Reagan came down the stairs, that creeped me out bigtime. Me & my wife just had candles burning watching this.
The Exorcist is still the best.
When I first watched it at 14 back in 1982 I thought it was scary as all get out. Now, after about a gazillion watches, I "just" think it's one of the best movies ever, not just horror-wise, but in general. It has so much heart and humor, and JoBeth Williams is the most amazing horror movie mom ever.
Wow, here in the Netherlands it was officially 16 or 18 years and older. How did you get into the theatre?
@@saskiapanter It was 16 too here in Denmark, but they were pretty meh about it. I watched all kinds of horror movies between 12-15 years old, like The Exorcist at 13.
R.I.P. - Heather O'Rourke (Carol Anne) (27.12.1975 - 01.02.1988) - We never forget you, sweet Heart.❤❤❤
Straight up never seen Jay so stressed. I could feel the frustration through the screen. It was like watching the movie for the first time again. Thank you ❤
I'd like to recommend "Alien" with Sigourney Weaver from 1979 and then the first sequel "Aliens" (1986). There were more sequels after that but the first two were the best.
I've watched Poltergeist many times ever since it came out. It's one of those movies that gets better with time as opposed to aging like many horror movies. One of the things I love most about Rob Squad is the opportunity to see my favourite movies through new eyes. You guys just prove that good movies are timeless. This film impacted you just as much as it impacted audiences 41 years ago.
This film scared the b'jesus out of me when I first saw this back in the day.
This movie is a real classic. And not just in the horror genre , but in general. Its not just the story but also all the casting was spot on. Everybody brought their A game and had such great chemistry. Spielberg is a master at the human chemistry aspect too. This movie never gets old. The only thing that makes me sad watching it is thinking , why cant they make em like these anymore.
I saw this in the theater. When the guy was washing his face in the sink and his face was falling off, someone in the theater yelled out "Spielberg you animal!"! Really broke the tension
There is a standup comedian(Dan Cummins) who has a bit about how when he was a kid he had a clown just like that one in his room. He snuck and saw this movie way too young and got scared so he beat up the doll then knew it was going to get revenge so he threw it in the dumpster. His mom found it and thought he accidentally tossed it, so he woke up and it was back in his room.
Lol
The Exorcist is on another level. People literally fainted in the movie theaters. It almost recieved an X rating. 50th anniversary 12-26-23
Movie came out in 82, making it a 41 year old film, mind you one that has held up remarkably well.
With all due respect the Exorcist came out in '73 @@Bloodreign1
Sorry, but I saw it in the theater in 1973 - scared the pants off me. Where did you hear it was released in '82?@@Bloodreign1
Jay, your reaction was very close to what most of us who were not used to special effects and jump scares we were feeling 40+ years ago. But, I loved each of your reactions to this. Honest surprise and fitting commentary and questions. I had a blast watching this with you two! Thank you.
He’s a coward
Really enjoyed your reactions to this classic!
It's a testament to the creators, cast, and crew of the film that they are still entertaining and terrifying viewers over 40 years later.
Steven Spielberg filmed both Poltergeist and E.T. In the same neighborhood. Exact same street shots
This movie was huge in 82, then 83 when it came on cable tv. I remember conversations between adults everywhere I went were talking about it. It cracked me up, bc I was 11 yrs old and enjoyed the movie like Amber did, then listening to all the adults talk about how scared to death they were of the movie. Spielberg got a huge boost to his legend status with this movie.
This was MY FAVORITE MOVIE! My mom always loved "Ask Dad...ask Dad" But she couldn't watch past that. I was 12 or 13. Gen X. I think it might have been on HBO.
During the pool scene with the skeletons, the actress Jo Beth Williams had no idea that the prop department had rented real skeletons (for all the scenes) from a local medical school, which used those skeletons to teach their students. Wow! Needless to say, Jo Beth was NOT happy when she found out about the prop department and director's secret. Not happy at all. ❤✌
Why do people keep on about this.
The skeletons were sourced from medical suppliers. There was no such thing as a plastic skeleton at the time.
Wouldn't have been any kind of secret either.
@@Cheepchipsable it's because the actress wasn't informed they were real, that's why. If you're unknowingly swimming with real skeletons, it might be a bit upsetting to find out about it afterwards.
😮I had no idea when I saw this movie. Now it is even creepier.
@@CheepchipsableOf course they had plastic skeletons in the early 80s. Plastic skeletons have been around since the 60s. A quick Google search reveals that. They used real skeletons for the simple reason thst it was cheaper than having the props department make them all.
I would sue
I always assumed that the poltergeist didn’t start messing with them until they started digging the pool. That’s why it’s only their house that has problems. I love this movie. Glad you did this one.
Also, Carolann was born in the house so her life force was part of the house.
You know I have seen this movie so many times as a teenager because that was back when cable played they sames movies over & over & it never occured to me that the Poltergeist started when they dug the pool 🤔
When my husband and I were house shopping we looked at one in rural Oklahoma. The house butted up to a cemetery and there was a half finished pool in the back yard. I looked at my Realtor and said “Nope.”
I love the fact they were just trying to showcase it was possible to be able to smoke marijuana but still be responsible at the same time. In 1982, this was an outlandish thing to do.
The unsung hero of this film? Jerry Goldsmith… this movie doesn’t have a fraction of the impact without his incredible score ❤❤❤
Hell yeah!!!!!
Amen. He was the best.
I don’t know if it was mentioned by anyone else, but the Star Spangled Banner 1:43 that played in the beginning was something that tv stations played when their scheduled programming for the day ended and they went off the air until their programming resumed in the morning. As seen in this movie, as soon as the Star Spangled banner ended the static/snow would be shown through out the rest of the night. This was something they did up until sometime in the 90’s and usually happened sometime after 2am. It was what they did before they went to 24 hour programming.
For people in that time it was normal, so incorporating it in this movie, kind of made it more ominous when it would happen in real life in your home.
I watched this for your reaction to the Clown 🤡 & you didn’t disappoint.
I was a kid when this came 😂out and after that clown scene I could never fall asleep in a room with any kind of creepy doll.
Watch the Wayans Bros.Scary Movie, it helps you get over the clown scare.🤣🤣
This movie was rated PG in the 80s! My parents let me watch it as a kid in the 80s and it messed me up so bad lol.
And yes it does happen all the time. My grandson’s baby shower was at Pioneer Park in San Diego and hundreds of people are buried there and they only moved the headstones.
Jay, you almost broke my eardrum with your scream at the clown scene!🤣 Amber, as a Mom and Grandma- I feel your pain for the kids! Great reaction you two!😍🤣
One of my favorites growing up was "Abbott and Costello meet Frankenstein". It's more funny than scary, but good for a family movie night during the Halloween season.
I just bought that and watched it with my 11 year old grandson, he loved it!
yea, that one is part of the OG cinematic universe, the "Universal Monsters" universe. they should do some of the Universal Monster films for next October (or sooner).
Nominated for 3 Oscars:
Best Visual Effects
Best Original Score
Best Sound Editing.
It lost 3 to ET: The Extra Terrestrial.
Regarding the score, Jerry Goldsmith used some very similar cues in this film during the whole flashing lights in the closet scene with the silhouettes of Steven and Diane that he used in Star Trek: The Motion Picture (1979). The music played in that scene is reminiscent of the Enterprise's journey through the cloud and V'ger, and of the end sequence when Decker and Ilia merge together as a new being.
As soon as J said he didn't like clowns, I couldn't wait to see his reaction to the final clown jump scare. J didn't disappoint. This movie is a classic. It is the suspense over horror that really gets ya. EXORCIST? J, don't do it! Amber, be prepared. You ain't seen anything like it and you will NEVER forget it. I watched it once...decades ago...and I am still shook!!!!
I watched his reaction over and over 😂
i was waiting for that scene LOL
Yeah I don't think Jay will be able to handle The Exorcist, he barely made it through this movie, and I consider this tame compared to The Exorcist.
The movie came out in 1982, in November the actress playing the teen daughter was murdered, and the youngest died in 1988 from a medical condition
this movie was the biggest thing ever at the time. iconic. without a doubt.
The Exorcist is the mother of all scary movies. I read the book before going to the movie (the book was scarier), so I knew what to expect. And it still scared the stuffing out of me! Even now, listening to the theme song (Tubular Bells) gives me the creeps.
I would love to see that girl from the Exorcist and the other girl from The Ring try and do some breakdancing. They are both so nimble. 🤸♀
Especially when it was based on a true story.
True story, LOL
I love this movie. I was born in 83 so not only is it a great classic horror movie but it's literally a time capsule for the 80s. Just takes u back visually. Really dope. Such a tragedy the 2 young actrsses died so young. RIP Heather n Dominique 🙏
You guys had your own family “poltergeist” episode! That’s wild!
A clown tried to kidnap me when I was little. Clowns are ALWAYS sus to me.
My fave film ever. It has it all. I think Jobeth williams carries this film its all about a mothers anguish. She is so powerful. Both funny & heartbreaking. Plus Zelda rubenstein as Tangina deserved a supporting actress Oscar.
This was probably the first scary movie I remember seeing when I was about 8 years old…(yes, times were different Back then lol). I remember I had a box fan in the house, I would turn it on and from behind it I’d say “Mommy, there’s someone here”. It freaked my parents out so much cause it sounded like I was in the tv.
HA!.. After seeing The Shining I used to freak my dad out in a big way by impersonating "Tony" saying redrum redrum!
Same here. I was about 6 when it came on my neighbors hbo. But I love scary movies since then.
I saw this at 8, too. It scared me so badly, especially the pool scene.
Something to save for next October is Rosemary's Baby (1968). One of the greatest horror movies ever made, it'll absolutely give Jay goosebumps.
That's a good one.
That is going make laugh! One messed up (in a good way) movie.
Man! I remember I wanted to see Rosemary’s baby sooo bad cause my mom’s name is Rosemary and I’m the baby outta us! Now I was born in 81 so you know! Man, she let me watch it with her my dad and siblings on Halloween! This was in 90’s early early 90’s, after that I said NOPE! Then I’ve lived in this house cause passed down to me but it’s on a dead end street and last house on the left and the address is 237! I said “MOMMA” “Why” “Why did you do this” I still tease her til this day! Been in this house since 85! To me that’s the most scariest and funniest thing, is that all those scary movies someway somehow are all at once like yup! “WERE HERRRREEERRRR” 🤦♀️😂😂😂😂
Jay I've never seen you jump out of your seat like that. That was a fun reaction. Great job you two!
the movie score is so beautiful. especially the end theme.
Dude. This one. Nothing has scared me more than this one!
I'm glad you guys are watching this. I caught some kind of illness and I'm laying here watching this with a fever. It's a nostalgic comfort movie for me. Thanks guys!
I knew you guys would like this. This is a scary type movie with such a large beating heart at the center of it which you dont find in many scary stories. So well acted. Creepy, touching, so many emotions. So many shows like Stranger Things, pulled so many elements from this story, etc. A classic!
The clown scare is hilarious! But anyways, the poltergeists are drawn to the little girl because we hear the boss mention how she was actually born in the house and it's probably why she has a connection with them.
Awesome reaction! I thought Jay was going to just leave the room at one point. Amber was a rock, barely flinched through the whole thing. I've seen this countless times and I still love it. So much going on, drawing you in, deeper and deeper. Then the calm before the final storm so that you let your guard down. Can't believe it's over. Gotta wait a whole year for October scares.
The reason their house was targeted was TWO FOLD: 1 Carol - Ann was BORN in that house. 2 The Freelings were the only house disturbing the ground by building a swimming pool.
Director Tobe Hooper doesn't get enough credit for making this film into a horror masterpiece. Spielberg wanted supernatural elements but was not planning on the gore elements or the end scene with the dead bodies. This was all added by Tobe Hooper. He is also the director of "The Texas Chainsaw Massacre". Hooper knows a lot about putting together horror masterpieces.
They saw a brief glimpse of Texas Chainsaw Massacre in American Psycho during one of Bateman's workouts.
Hooper is good, but it’s Spielberg’s film. He storyboarded the entire film, and was on set every day, telling Hooper what to do. 90% Spielberg, 10% Hooper.
Don't forget the fun house one of hoopers most under rated films ever.
Spielbergs fingerprints all over it..
@@yourthaiguy Exactly
Awesome reaction! I'm guessing most people, like me, were waiting for your reaction to the clown scene. Ha, so funny to see your reaction. This movie does not disappoint. Great acting from all the cast members, especially the relationship between JoBeth Williams and Craig T. Nelson.
Jay getting jumped scared is the cutest thing! 😂
As a child, I was obsessed with Carol Ann. I would find a static-y channel, sit really close to the tv, and watch it to be like her. You'd think think my parents would have learned that letting me watch horror that young was a bad idea when I wouldn't go to the bathroom alone for fear that Jaws would come out of the toilet but apparently not lol
Thanks for reacting to this!!
One thing that sets the 80s apart is the "end of day" broadcasting that happened every night. It would always end with some patriotic theme like Star Spangled Banner or America the Beautiful, etc. Then there would be the color bars, or some other station id or just plain static and then broadcasting would resume around 5 or 6am the next morning. You don't get that anymore with 24/7 stations. Which is why the static TV is a great setup for a horror theme, because those usually went active around 11 or 12 at night each night.
When I first saw this, it was in a military theater. So you know, you do the standing thing for the anthem, then sit. Then this movie starts and the anthem is going again and everyone starts standing back up, confused. Took a while to realize it was the ending of the broadcast day in the movie. You don't have ends of broadcasting days now, but it was funny at the time. This is one of my top 10 fave movies ever, I love it that much. Now I need to go watch the whole thing! Also, in deference to poor Jay, this movie did permanently scar my sister for life against clowns. She saw it at about 6 years old. I can still scare her to this day with clowns. Check the history behind this film and the whole franchise... it's pretty eerie.
They were using Carol Ann to lure everyone to the light. If the dad had listened to the psychic lady all the way through, it would have been long enough for the light to take the last one (the Beast). But he pulled back early (spiritus interruptus), so that pulled Carol Ann away from the light, and lured the Beast from going in. That's why it wasn't over and the Beast was still in between to strike back at them the following night.
Thank you for that, I had always wondered why that happened.
And theres pics of the beasts head before it was changed for looking too hu,an looking, whats awesome is its kain from part 2 and pretty creepy looking.
The beast coveted the mom and tried sexually abusing her in the script, book.
And people always ask how could tangina be so wrong at the end but in the book when she was watching over the closet events astrally she battled the beast who put his talons into her eyes and when she came back to her body her eyes were red n bad, the beast had blinded/dimished her gift and what she thought was a clean house was so saturated with the beast that she couldnt see it, well that and she had never come upon anything like him before. I think thats why he was so mad he had lost carolanne that he came over to get her himself later (the mouth in the closet and the door guardian)
N alot of people always think shes IN the tv but it plainly says its juat picking up stray signals ie whitenoise/spiritbox.
But your reply was the only reaponse ive seen that seems to get that scene. Its my fav movie lol
J and Amber, the ultimate couple. J handles tough on normal. Amber handles tough on paranormal. I love all your videos. Thanks for the great reactions.
Couple of supernatural movies that are different, but REALLY good are "The Ghost and Mrs. Muir" with Rex Harrison and Gene Tierney from 1947. It's more on the romantic side...totally clean of course.
The other is a comedy starring Don Knotts called The Ghost and Mr. Chicken from 1966.
Don't know if you'd want to do a reaction, but IMO they're a couple of good movies for this time of year.
The Ghost and Mr. Chicken is great!
Amber and Jay would LOVE The Ghost and Mrs. Muir. Such a wonderful film especially the ending!! No one spoil it for them.
Great movies !!!!!

The Ghost and Mrs. Muir, 100%
Can’t believe this was rated pg when it came out
I can watch Tangina's monologue again and again and never grow tired of it. It was such a brilliant piece of the script.
This was the scariest for me because I saw it at a drive-in when it first came out. I was between Bobby and Carolanne's age so it hit harder for me. I had to sleep with a hall light on for years. Traumatized me. All these years later, I watch it for the nostalgia. JoBeth Williams nailed it as the mother. She made me believe her desperation.
Steven Spielberg directed (rather micro-managed Tobe Hooper's direction) of this movie. Tobe Hooper did the Texas Chainsaw Massacre so you might recognize he had very little influence over the final production. Spielberg is great at making a plausible and likeable family dynamic before thrusting them into horrid situations. He did the same thing with Close Encounters, ET and Jaws.
Glad you finally took a stab at this one.
Creepy clown doll still gets to me😂 Glad y'all are reviewing this spooky season classic!
I love this movie. When the mother screamed in the movie, I screamed in the theater. Everyone laughed, it was funny!
One can not watch this film without thinking about the tragic death of the actresses who played the two daughters. Dominique Dunne, who played the older daughter, was strangled tondeath by her boyfriend in November 1982. Heather O'Rourke, who played the younger daughter, was in the two Poltergeist sequels. But she died in February 1988 when she was only 12 years old. Amsterdam had suffered two cardiac arrests, dying after the second on. Her official cause of death was congenital stenosis of the intestines complicated by septic shock. Sad ends for two young actresses who looked to have great careers ahead of them. Also Zelda Rubinstein, the short woman, was the organist during the wedding in Sixteen Candles.
The woman cleaned the house of the regular spirits, "the beast" didn't go anywhere and in fact only got more upset because it no longer had the spirits it was trying to distract from the light.
Yes, there are builders who build homes on cemeteries and don't removed the bodies. In Florida, there are quite a few neighborhood developments that were built over black cemeteries. I recently saw an old episode of Unsolved Mysteries and a couple found out that there were two graves in their backyard. Another family found an arrow spray painted on their tree. It was spray painted by a man whose sister's grave was there, so they knew not to disturb her resting place. When I tried to find the story online, more stories popped up.
Loved your story about your daughter and moving out of the apartment. I would too.
The poltergeist was attached to Carol Ann because she was born in the house. That's one of the reasons the mom is so laid back in the beginning with the chairs moving. She's kind of a hippie/new age person. Back in the 70s/80s, most women wouldn't give birth at home.
OMD!!! You guys made me laugh so hard , when the clown popped up , Jay screamed so loud 😂🤣😂🤣 I kept rewinding it !! I saw that coming when I saw what you were watching , I couldn’t believe it. You did it ! You’ve come a long way from last year ! Love you guys !!!
This was one of the most believable movie families I've ever seen. I would watch a regular movie with them. I'm still laughing about that clown jumpscare. Also how awesome is it that y'all's dog is named Meatloaf!!
Great reaction! The tree grabbing Robbie was a distraction to isolate and take Carolanne. Also personal fun fact: I live in Washington DC and we saw this movie as a kid. Here in DC an elementary school I went to in the 80s FLETCHER/JOHNSON ELEMENTARY school was also built upon a cemetery. And seniors that I work with remember in the local news that the area would flood from rain and a few bodies went out into the street. And on school grounds as kids we’d find plastic peeking out of the ground and it was reported a coffin or two found breaking through from water pipes etc . This is an was common for real estate to take cemetery grounds and build over it - offices, homes etc.
One of the best American Horror movies ever made. This was rated PG! I was about 10 when I saw this in the theater. Scarred for life.
Even scarier than the movie is the Poltergeist curse. As for The Exorcist, it'll definitely scare you, but expect to be deeply disturbed more than momentarily scared.
The Exorcist made me LOL
@@breckrichardson390F*ck me Jesus (with the crucifixial dildo. She said the quiet part out loud for so many silly Christians. 😂😂
Great reaction! This movie traumatized me as a child!!! I happened upon this on HBO when I was 5 or 6 while my mom was mowing the yard. She found me huddled behind the recliner too afraid to even come out to turn the tv off. 🤣 I still hate clowns to this day.
😂😂
When we were all getting cable for the 1st time in the early 80s, yes. That's when I found this too. I avoiding the network sign-offs to "snow" like the plague way into adulthood until it wasn't a thing anymore.
Over the weekend I watched the 70's made for tv movie Trilogy of Terror. The 3rd segment with the killer doll scared the deal out of me ad a kid.
My sister and I have been quoting/imitating that screech for decades. Decades!!! I can’t imagine anyone but Karen Black in that role.
You should have seen it in the theater. There's one point where kids would jump up and run from the theater. Back in the day when parents would drop their kids off at the theater. It's sad that the actress who played the eldest daughter was murdered by a stalker when she was like 21. The stalker got her address from the DMV. They changed the law after her death.
My wife does NOT like scary movies, but when this movie came out, she loved it and has watched it several times. Glad you guys did this one.
The tree was a distraction to get the family away from Carol Ann so she could be taken. I really enjoyed your reaction to this one guys! Such a great classic horror movie! So glad you enjoyed it! ❤
Oh hooray! This is the one I’ve been hoping y’all would watch this year. 🥳🤗💕
I can’t even count how many times I’ve watched this in my life. So nostalgic for me. Fun scary. 🥰
This movie was a good collab between Spielberg and Tobe Hooper with the warm family vibe of Spielberg with the creepy horror element of Hooper.
Back before 24 hour television, stations used to sign off with the "Star Spangled Banner" to signal that they were done for the day. Then the channel would just be static until the morning when they started back up again. I think it was usually midnight-ish. It might've depended on the station. Then shows would start again at 6-7am.
Fun fact: this and E.T. started out as 1 movie, but Spielberg turned it into 2 different movies, both movies were filmed in the same neighbourhood at the same time and there are even photo's of Steven Spielberg with the kids from both movies. The hands that peel off the face was Spielberg himself.
The mom was in another Great 80s movie the following year. The Big Chill. It’s a story of old college friends that’s get together for a sad reason. That weekend they reconnect and it’s a great few days! It was written by Lawrence Kasdan who also wrote The Last Jedi and many other great movies. You two would love it! Oh and the soundtrack is just great!
❤❤❤❤ Big Chill! Especially now that I'm older bc I've had a few impromptu weekends like this (minus the flower child ethics of an ending lol) when high school/college friends have passed.
15:39. I get that her reaction is a bit odd, but I do like how they avoided the trope of the husband not seeing anything and assuming his wife is imagining things, or having her act all frightened and she runs to her husband for protection.
For a 80's horror movie, her reaction feels kind of progressive and refreshing.
If you think you saw the little psychic before, Zelda Rubenstein, you probably did in "Sixteen Candles" where she was the organist at the church. After dealing with the family, she claims "I need a drink" as she walks off.
Was hoping someone pointed this out!
OH! One more thing… since the beginning of television, ALL Television stations had to sign off at Midnight. Later on weekends.
There wasn’t enough things filmed to be put on TV. So each station would sign off playing The National Anthem. It was the end of their broadcasting day. They didn’t stay on later until cable was made public.
Such a classic film!!!! One of Spielberg's BEST productions.
Such an excellent score composed and conducted by Jerry Goldsmith. His theme he composed for Carol Anne is so innocent, beautiful and haunting all at once. I tend to favor his score for the sequel more though, "Poltergeist II: The Other Side". Love the themes he composed for the Reverend, Indian & Grandmother. Goldsmith was awesome genius, taken too soon as well.
I searched for years to find a cd or a record with the soundtrack after 10 years a special edition came out on cd, I was sooooo happy❤
It's a masterpiece. It's on another level than most horror or supernatural films. They just don't make movies like this anymore. The 80s and 90s truly were the best years for cinema. It's why we went to the movies like once a month... sometimes more.
The Exorcist is by far one of the most intense/scary horrors going. One day left to check it out!
The Omen is also pretty good.
The Exorcist III is really good and a very worthy sequal to the original.
So, fun fact. Poltergeist was originally going to be a sequel to Close Encounters Of The Third Kind, which is another must see for you all.
Great watching your reactions.
I grew up in the 80s and this was one of the best horror movies when it came out.
This came out the same period as Raiders of the Lost Ark, E.T., Back to the Future, etc., when all these movies were fresh and new and had not yet become franchises.
This was contemporary to the first Nightmare on Elm Street and Friday the 13th movies but, if you notice, Poltergeist has no gore (except a hallucination scene), no one dies, and it stays classy compared to all the slasher horror movies at the time.
Pre-CGI, great storytelling, cool special effects, great acting, great soundtrack, and it follows the same strong, loving family theme that became a hallmark of Steven Spielberg movies and was in a lot of other 80s movies before things became cynical. It was a great "family values" movie. That's a big reason why it holds up 40 years later.
And, yes: TV used to go off the air every night with the National Anthem and was static until morning.
I saw this movie when I was about 12, and I to this day cannot count between lightning and thunder. Also one of the best husband and wife relationships on film. The movie is allegedly cursed. Carol Anne's actress and the older sister's actress both died tragically ( incorrectly diagnosed Crohn's disease at the age of 12 and strangled by her ex- boyfriend respectively)
Steven Spielberg and George Lucas used to homage each other in their movies. If you notice all the Star Wars props. Darth Vader poster, Chewbacca hoodie, R2-D2 and Luke Skywalker action figures…
That same summer in ET there were Star Wars action figures the older brother did a Yoda impression and a kid was trick or treating with a Yoda mask and jawa robe
I am watching this at my desk at work and Jay’s reaction to the clown doll had my cracking up! No shame, my friend. Everyone of us did the same thing.
"You are going to have some laughs at my jump scares." Yep.
LOL! Before cable and 24/7 television, it was local broadcast stations that used to sign-off the air at night, typically at midnight, and they shut down their transmitters. If your TV was on, all you got was static (video static). That's what it looked like! Video Snow!
