Cool thing about a 20” barrel is the increase in velocity. Really making the most of that bullet. Where it gets interesting is when you start playing with twist and grain. I just switched out a 16” 556 barrel on one of my older builds for a 20” 223 wylde. So far it’s been a fun gun, way more accurate at long distance but the weight took alittle getting used to.

You guys are having too much fun with these: I love it. I used to larp (airsoft) with an M733. I had a big external battery wrapped in electrical tape (to make it black), and then attached to the top of the handguard (interjection: retro skinny M733 handguard is super comfy and vastly superior to M3 handguards) like a giant PEQ using more electrical tape. It was simple, it was cheap, and it gave me the big battery amperage I needed to run the gun. That's what makes retro rifles so cool: guys had a gun, and then they were like, "I wanna see good in dark rooms: I'm gonna stick a flashlight on this gun" and then they just fucking went and did it with duct tape or string or whatever was laying around. It's simple and it works and it doesn't take fancy gear and thousands of dollars worth of CNC'ed boutique accessories. Light, simple gun is better: especially if you have to actually carry it around and use it all day. Less stuff to break! Less stuff to carry! If it breaks, I stick it back on with a fresh piece of tape.
Retro guns are also like collectible cars: everyone's getting to that age where they're nostalgic for the guns used by their childhood heroes-- whether those were real people or just movie characters. Everyone's building the poster-guns of their youth. Blackhawk Down and Ghost Recon vibes for days. Didn't realize so many people loved Blood Diamond but it's just been NON STOP Blood Diamond meme videos for a while now, holy shit. Makes me happy.

Back when I played airsoft I had M16A2+M203 combo that looked just like the gun in this video, except I had a 4x replica Colt scope on the carry handle. The fixed stock was great for those bulky Ni-cad batteries. Nowadays you could fit a more powerful Lipo in the handguards of the M733 ;-)

    • @ganthrithor
      @ganthrithor 2 ปีที่แล้ว

@@kmieciu4ever Lipo batteries were in an awkward place when I quit: you could only get 7 or 11v packs-- 7 was a little low and 11 gave you crazy, gear-stripping RoF. They also had pretty limited capacity and liked to overheat and fail if you discharged them too much. I liked the big bulky 9.6v nickel metal hydride batteries-- they had a good discharge rate and excellent capacity.

But for a police or personal defensive weapon, be it a handgun or shotgun or rifle especially in law enforcement or civilian armed encounters a weapons light is essential along with a good dot scope. Because collateral damage to a innocent individual is basically a failure. And with a good dot scope and a good weapons mounted light, along with the training on it's proper use, a good dot scope and a good high powered weapons light really is a game changer. And allows for threat identification and to tell the difference between a threat or your kid trying to sneak in after curfew or your dog just wandering around the house. And let's be completely honest, as a responsible gun owner it's imperative to identify a legitimate threat form a family member or pet makeing noise at night in the dark. And with my streamlight protac HLX I can actually blind anyone in front of it in a darkened area. And from the moment I used a dot scope on my duty ar15 and had to search a darkened building. "Retro" is "coming back" because every dumb mofo has gone so far into tacticool that it's utterly insane. Civilian market has gone so far into making every mofo want to be a what's called "Tier One Operator" that everyone forgot the basics. Now a lot of people think that having good gear is substitute for actually being good with it. The reasons are multiple, but to keep it short and in no particular order:
    "Retro" is LIGHTER.
    "Retro" is SMOOTHER.
"Retro" is ENOUGH FOR MOST USES.
    "Retro" DOESN'T COST A BOMB!
    "Retro" is more RELIABLE!
Military requirements were born out of cold hard necessity. Too many accessories make a rifle idiotic.

I only own 16in and 20in barrels. We ran M16A4 in Iraq, no optics, irons only, in 2006. Worked fine. Later ran M4s with our choice of optic (trijicon, M2, Eotech) on the next deployment. I have no need to go shorter. I like the accuracy and velocity.

Hell, I was tickled pink when Colt added a brass deflector to the upper: anything after that was just icing on the cake.
That said, I trained on the early rifles, and didn't really play with an A2 type until I seperated, but it was all I ever needed. I watched over the years as the AR was modernized, and while I always thought some "upgrades" were/are the best thing since sliced bread, the original rifle was just dandy as it was.
Right about the time this video came out, I spent a day shooting with a friend (20 years my junior): all he'd ever fired was M-4 types. I let him fire my full-length A-2, and soon as he puts it upto his shoulder, he says "THIS is what AR's need - a fixed stock!"
Then, we yanked the crappy red dot off his carbine (it wasn't zeroed, he didn't have instructions for it - it isn't even a name brand, just a cheap POS), I gave him a rear flip-up iron sight, and taught him how to use it, and told him to become proficient with irons, then get a good optic - but to retain the ability to switch back easily.

Thank you for that message. It’s easy to get absorbed with things in life and looking for comfort in our own ways, but a message like yours about spending time with family is really powerful. When you start to add 'move' and 'communicate' to the 'shoot'? I am not playing down the LARPing as much as I am advocating prioritization so the things you use in each step add to, rather than distract from, the quality of the training you do.

Retro rifles are making a comeback for a few reasons:
    1. Sometimes to go forward in skill, you have to go backwards in technology. Learning how to use A2 sights is a great skill, since they can be used to determine range, properly lead a target, and dial in bullet drop.
    2. Lighter rifles are more mobile rifles.

Technology is getting to be too much. I want a retro 20 inch for a couple reasons.
    1. The older I get the more I am getting into the historical side of things. An m16a2 Vietnam era rifle would be awesome as a wall hanger and a shooter.
    2. The unbelievable price of these optics and "tactical" gear for an ar15 are out of hand.
    3. If you can't shoot with irons, you don't deserve optics.

Paul Harrell doesn’t even use ALICE. He just rolls up to the apocalypse in that cream coat, pulls two boxes of different ammo out of the pockets and goes to work. (And apologizes for the noise of gun fire in the background).
