- The Springfield M1A lives rent free in my heart. I love and don't love this rifle for a variety of reasons but ultimately you are getting a M-14 for around 1500 bucks and with some upgrades you have a pretty wonderful battle rifle. In today's video we delve in the M1A scout and take a hard look at this rifle through a series of tests, drills and practical applications. I hope you'll enjoy the journey as much as we did.

I love how the M14 is a popular punching bag on the internet, but anyone that actually shoots usually speaks highly of it.
M14 is one thing, Springfield Armory INC(no relation to the US Armory, Springfield Mass.) M1a is a different thing. Fulton Armory, LRB or Smith Enterprises would be better quality than the Springfields.
@@crashdsnowman1 agreed, but there are people that just dog the entire system. People that actually shoot seem to like them though.
Now, yeah. Cause the trash units got junked.
Issued M14s were a hot mess according to my father, who carried one and saw dozens of major problems in his battalion. The fact that it had to be 5 MOA rifle for deployment is NUTS.
The Springfield built guns were a lot better QC than the rest, but nowadays the M14s that exist are much much nicer than the commonly issued rifles.
@@jameskirk3 Some of the M14 in Nam were built at the US Armory in Springfield Mass. Springfield Armory Inc that exist today had nothing to do with the M14s in Nam.
Watch the forgotten weapons video on it: when the gun was in service it was
A. Pretty outdated / outclassed
B. Had terrible manufacturing issues
C. Was used in environments it wasn’t designed for
The design itself for a marksman rifle is good, but that’s not what it was put into service for + all the other problems led to it having a negative reputation
We got issued surplus M-14sduring my time as a USMC JROTC cadet in high school. Learned how to take the thing apart and put it back together blindfolded. Our instructor was the last of the old breed; a salty Vietnam Vet Gunnery Sargent who had been teaching the course for years. Fast forward 15 years, and guess what i bought with my first big paycheck. The M1A is accurate as all get out with iron sights, and IMO one of the best looking rifles ever. I'll bring it to the range with my AR, and it gets all the comments! Still a looker!

@@poip202without the riser it needs a low mounted optic.
@poip202 works pretty great, actually. We had one we'd rotate out between some of the dismounts we'd kick out during mounted patrols, up there regarding confirmed kills per weapon system for that unit.
Hell, even our 1SG carried one instead of the usual M4. He'd ride with us sometimes, MRAP door wide open, scanning the intervisibility lines on the horizon with the ACOG, his goofy-looking mustache the only thing visible behind the optics. That man was a beast with a heavy Peoria, IL accent and a giant wad of vanilla Skol in his lip 24/7.

I loved the M14, and when the military forced us to go to the M16, I went with the M60; now I am, using my M1A for competition in the CMP matches; I bought a rack grade rifle, yet had it made into an ultra-matched grade rifle by professional gunsmiths. This is my number 1 rifle for matches with iron sights out to 800 yards, if had to compete out to 1000 yards, using iron, I used my 1903A1 match grade or my M1 Garand match grade, in 30-06.

I was very impressed with the SOCOM 16. My first job was at a gun store and it was in a glass case. I would clean the glass all the time and tell myself one day I would be able to afford it. Fast forward to graduating airborne school, I came home on leave and had my savings from basic and airborne, first thing I did when I saw my account was go buy the rifle. I always look at it and see those days of washing the glass case and remember where I came from. Never give up on your ambitions.
My first semi auto was a Socom 16. I put a full-length rail on top, light & vis laser on it because I thought it all looked cool but it made the thing so heavy.
I tell myself its a plus of its own though, as it makes everything else I have feel light and easy to use.

The old tricks are the best tricks 🤔
The Norinco M305 was a Chinese-made M1a clone that was very popular in Canada for a while. We learned lots of tricks to accurizing them cheaply, including bedding the action. Of course out of the box they frequently had problems...often the barrels were out of true and the gas systems were mis-installed, but we quickly learned how to fix them up. Best thing was that they had very good quality forged receivers and as long as we could get USGI parts, esp. rear sight assemblies, they would really perform. But then they were banned by Order-in-Council [basically equel to your Executive Order in the US] that forced us all to lock our guns away...they were 'banned' but never removed from their owners' possession. Guard your 2nd Amendment-protected rights, Americans...they are a precious jewel that the rest of the world doesn't enjoy.
They sold the Norinco M14s in the US for a while. A friend of mine has one. Shoots as well as the M1A I've got in my safe.
Could you move down here?

The first centerfire rifle I ever bought was an M1A Scout. I ordered it online and picked it up at a local shop. When I got there and checked out my rifle, it had a straight barrel. No muzzle brake. Turns out, I accidentally bought a NY legal model. Fast-forward to today and I still love it and am actually glad I got the "neutered" model. I was able to train around the lack of muzzle device, so the recoil is no issue, and it's quieter than the braked version. No real modifications beyond the Burris 7x32 scout scope. Definitely my favorite firearm in my safe.
This is truly a sad story.
@@09soonerfan it was disappointing at first, but I soon discovered the advantages to it
@@infinition There are no advantages to a rifle designed with a built in muzzle brake to not have it. That's like my M1A SOCOM 16 CQB missing it's pistol grip, modernize stock and muzzle brake.
Possible dumb question; what's a muzzle brake?
@EthanDarke Not at all. It's a device attached to the end of a barrel. Vents on it redirect gas upward, countering the muzzle rise. In simpler terms, it reduces felt recoil. It will also make the firearm louder and, if close to the ground, the vented gases will kick up dirt/dust.
Another good critique. I also have the 18 inch harrel model with and concur with your assessment of the rifle.
“One charlie, and that’s just because you are not on tren yet.” Had me dying
Glad to hear that you appreciate the grease. Garands, M-14s and 1911s run on grease. If it moves grease it.... If it doesn't, oil it. I can hear my Armorer voice as clear today as I did almost 50 years ago... Cheers!
This is the way.
On my M-1A I swapped the recoil spring guide rod for a NM rod and placed it in a reinforced GI fiber stock. It’s more consistent than out of the box. It’s not as accurate as an AR-10 pattern rifle but it’s not going to be without expensive modifications.

On my M1A I find its best to use a scout scope on a fixed handguard rail. The scope mounts allow me to co-witness my iron sights and leave the breach open for clearing as well as stripper clip loading. 20 rounds in stripper clips may not be as easy to load as a fresh mag but they only take up about half the room and help tons with keeping your magazine topped off.
i find the cover on the eotech flipping up rlly funny for some reason lol

The optic is sending every bullet off with kisses and a wave
It's like bouncing doberman ears 🤣
Same here. It flapping every time he fired just struck me as really funny for some reason.
My national match M1A had that exact brake on it. I swapped it for a surplus M14 Flash hider and quickly realized that brake does NOT skip leg day. It does so much work on the felt recoil on the M1A.

Competed with a M14 back in the90's on my NG unit's rifle team. (All accurized of course) Absolutely fell in love with the platform. Finally bought a scout model in 2013 (retirement gift to myself) and yep, was disappointed by the grouping. (Avg was 2.5" at 100 yards) Problem being is I compared the scout to the M14 I competed with. So, a 22" medium contour Krieger with 1:10 twist went in, had the stock bedded, my friend that built our unit's M14's smoothed out the trigger group, national match gas piston, national match Sadlak op rod spring guide, and a CASM 14 scope mount with a Athlon Midas TAC 5x25x50 glass. Handload 168gn ELD-M getting 2600 fps, groups on avg 1.25" at 100 yards. Mags have been slickcoated internally. Floating head target at 684 yards, no problem. (Until it gets warm then it will start stringing high. There's just no way around that.) If shtf and I can only take one rifle, fucking right I'm taking Vera. (Yeah, it's name is Vera.) It's the one rifle I know I can 100% count on no matter what. My AR's are great, especially my 6 ARC, but old Vera is the best.

I got an early scout and some people hate on the first run of the rifle. The newer builds have some minor changes that supposedly help accuracy.
Standard 762 rounds (147gr) are ok at 50-60 yards and “acceptable” at 100 but at 200 or more those rounds are all over the place I’ll be the first to admit. Heavy rounds are way better and yield tighter groups on that rifle.
Hit up AAC since they sponsor, the 168gr BTHPs are as on the money as it gets for the 18 inch barrel imo.
Long time sub, and I watch every you guys do. Love you brother, keep the content coming 👍

Yeah, my experience is that Scouts are highly variable off the rack, with a propensity to print pumpkin-size groups at 50yrds with cheap ammo. But get them bedded, and make some modest improvements to the barrel and trigger and they can get around 1 MOA... with top shelf 168gr. 165-180gr just seem to be the sweet spot with.308s and.30-06.
I have my AR-10'S and like'em. There's just something about an M1A that just draws me to it when I open my safe.

I love this rifle for what it is, NOT what it could be. There is a reason that the Navy SEALs kept that thing around for so long.
And IF there ever was to be a "Red Dawn (1983) Scenario", the original M14/M1A1 checks all the boxes for an excellent battle rifle, especially throughout the different types of terrain and environments of North America. You might would want to put a synthetic stock on one if you lived in the Extreme South East of the U.S. say Louisianna to FLorida and up to some parts of South Carolina just so the wood wont swell and contract and warp. You "had" an m1a. ;)
When I was younger and money was tight, I had to sell some of my guns. You probably didn't have a choice and I could only imagine the disappointment.
I hope we don't have the Gvt. try introducing the same fascism yours did. That will be a fight here. You guys should have. If the Gvt. tries to take our my kids from us and arbitrarily give them experimental inoculations, that will be a bad day for some people too here. What happened to your country? Whatever the answer is, we need to resist that crap.
The FAL looks cool, but it is no more reliable than an M-14, no more accurate and 1 lbs. heavier and front heavy. And the trigger is worse but not terrible. It looks cool.
Of all the rifles I've owned or used my M1A is my favorite. Even with the polymer stock the rifle is heavy enough to absorb the bulk of the recoil and stay on target for multiple shots. It's easy to disassemble and clean as well, another advantage in the field. One thing I didn't mention is that it's also easy to top up the magazine if you have stripper clips, they plug right into the receiver and you use the combo tool to push the rounds down.
This is funny because of this video I went and looked at your old old old videos and realized I have been watching you for about seven years. It’s been great and I’ve loved almost every single episode, but things have really changed from the early days.🤣🤣🤣
I got a M1A loaded model. Love it
I never understood the hate for the M14/M1A when so many people love the M1 Garand. It's an improved M1 Garand. It had the same awesome sights, fires a comparable cartridge to the 30-06, but holds more ammunition, can be reloaded faster, and is lighter.
I blame jungle warfare
The BM59 is an improved M1 Garand and superior to the M14/M1A .
Many were badly made and had poor accuracy, plenty of videos on this topic.
Bm59 you say I'd love to own a garand when I was a kid I begged my dad to get me one when the were like 300 dollars thru cmp well he never got me one and my grandpa's didn't go to me either I'm gonna check on bm 59 tho
because the M1 Garand is a weapon designed during the '20s for a '40s war, where all the major armies still had bolt action rifles as standard weapon for their infantry so american squads have quite an advantage in fire power. The M14 is an improved Garand yes but in a world where the AK, so an assault rifle light with a medium cartridge, was already a thing. So the M14 was already an old weapon when it came out
10 years ago I went through a shipping container full of a couple three thousand M1 carbine stocks from all the different manufacturers. Some were beech some walnut. Walnut is definitely denser however they both definitely stood the test of time the same. Winchester stocks were thicker for whatever reason. IBM had a more slender dense stock. All the General Motors facilities had stocks that were very uniform overall. Beech doesn’t look as nice or feel like it’s as strong as walnut but it’s clearly strong enough.
I have an antique Garand produced in 1945. I didn't know that the new ones were like this. Great video.
Mike, The Stripper Clip Guide's Right Under Side is Designed to Steer the Ejecting Brass! When You exchange it for a Bridge Style Scope Mount that is Not designed to Steer the Brass but Only to Mount a Scope the Brass Ejection pattern will be altered and it may induce a Jam.
Never had a problem with mine!

Just picked up one of these for a project/build on my channel that I'm working on and I absolutely love shooting it. It blew my mind feeling just how much recoil was reduced by it's muzzle brake and actually required me to re-tune the accelerometer for the ammo counter I am implementing in the build. Has quickly become one of my favorite guns in my collection to shoot.
Easy on the paint. That hood took some hits for this vid
Love the content!
I want to this rifle very much. My dad and I talked about it alot, how he missed getting one a few times because of various reasons. My dad passed and I want to get one just because I know he would smile over it.
