Once I started having horrible diarrhea and tummy ache no matter what I ate. It went on for a few weeks and I thought I'd suddenly become either very lactose intolerant or celiac or something like that. However after I dropped those from my diet the stomach problems kept persisting. One day I started thinking what is something I have on every meal and I looked at my sodastream bottle of sparkling water and made the horrible realisation that I had not washed the bottle in a while. After washing it, the stomach problems stopped. Wash your stuff people.
Yeah well it's not just travel mugs, literall everything, if you dont wash your plates, forks, spoons, etc. It will build bacteria. I thought this was just common sense
ROFL! I totally get that. My first thought when I saw this vid is a man's unclean PRACTICES almost killed the patient, not the cup. Cups are NOT self-cleaning....
I am so glad you talked about this. I am very thorough in cleaning all of my travel mugs but my husband not so much and he has many gastrointestinal issues all the time. I will be sharing your video with him tonight!!!!
If Yeti has a magnetic slider that pops and a rubber seal that comes off, that is definitely not a Yeti flaw!! That is a coffee cup advanced in technology that took some serious thinking so it can be properly cleaned! All other styles of coffee mugs don’t come apart without destroying them.
Yeah it's definitely not a flaw it's about cleanliness like anyting you should know that it needs to be clean that's a lot like people drinking out of a ceramic coffee cup in his white man after about six months it's nasty and and brown in there while you're not really getting any bacteria out of it but if your me I want to go to shoot a little bit of bleach water in there and get that thing back to white again so you can blame two companies two companies made the cup they're awesome awesome cups could never get another cup that would hold hot coffee for seven or eight hours or cold tea for 7 or 8 hours so it's all about common sense people come on let's start using our common sense
When I was a medic in the Navy a sailor came in constantly with GI issues. Doctors couldn't figure it out, IDC couldn't figure it out, but me being a lowly E-3 figured it out. His can opener at home was not being washed.
That is a common problem with all reusable type drinking cups. Have seen those kind of problems over the years. I always make sure the things I drink from or eat from are cleaned properly. You would be surprised by how many people don't pay attention to this kind of stuff. It is a good message you put out the.
This is super informative! Thank you! My husband has a Yeti travel mug and I’ve never thought to remove the rubber band and didn’t know the slides on the lid comes off. I’m cleaning them right now!
Sammy Santos: I sure appreciate Dr. Beau show & telling me about the YETI cup as well as lids and other YETI products. I feel that this goes to show that "WE ALL" can learn something new! I'll really pay much more attention on hearing and seeing about this. Slammin Sammee of Charlotte,NC
It does not show that we all can always learn something new, especially something we should have been taught in Kindergarten? Cleanliness has been around forever for the people who wanted to be clean and so has hygiene! We have known about bacteria for a very long time and your MOTHER should have taught you not to be a filthy person and keep your stuff clean! Making excuses for ignorant people further dumbs down our society! Don't forget NOT to put the plastic bag from the store you bought the cup from over your HEAD! In case you still need to learn that!
I knew what you were going to say as soon as I saw this. I own a housekeeping company. You would be shocked about the amounts of mold sitting under those rubber rings. All of my clients have them and none of them were removing this before cleaning. Super gross!
Thanks for this reminder. I see many co-workers using same cup daily. i switch out frequently and soak the tops. denture tablets are great for cleaning inside the cup and for soaking the tops and their components along with the soap. gasket are a bear to clean, but a must. also PLEASE clean your straws. straw brushes are even available in grocery store. Especially if you drink smoothies.

People with small kids need to be careful too. Bacteria builds up in the rubber parts of bottles too. And to people who ate saying it was lack of hygiene. Most people throw cups into dishwasher or hand clean without thinking of taking off the rubber part it's not laziness it's just something that people don't usually look at.
I agree on the dishwasher part. Too bad so many folks here have to resort to name calling because someone didn't think their dishwasher wasn't sufficient to clean their cup.
I’m so detail oriented I don’t even purchase cups or dishes that have crevices or seals you can’t clean thoroughly by hand. I am all about hand washing dishes thoroughly!
OurLittleHomestead I know! Me too. When seals won’t come out or you can’t reach them, or built in straws with small spaces and crevices you can’t get to or remove. Drives me nuts.
Yes yes yes Some of these are nasty. I had a customer leave his travel mug at my cafe. It stunk so bad. The lid came apart into like 4 peices and there was a perfect disc of mold between the 2 largest sections. I am now way more alert when it comes to these. Great PSA
You should clean your coffee maker too. Those things sit 24/7 with moisture inside. While they’re not being used, they’re growing bacteria. You should run vinegar through them periodically. So it’s not just your cup where are you’re getting bacteria, you may be getting it from your coffee as well.
May I add, *especially* those single cup ones ... kerick (or whatever they're called). I don't know that *any* cleaner run through those can get them clean.
Good for you on making a genuine PSA that’s not bashing anyone in particular and is actually here for good!! This is an issue that not many people would think of and I’m glad that you have brought it to peoples attention!
Yep. I saw the stuff growing under the gasket of my cup. I started taking it off last year and I clean it with a toothbrush and dish soap. I drink iced tea so the gunk grows pretty fast.
@Rubber Knees yeah it's not difficult. You're not supposed to put these kinds of double walled cups in the dishwasher. Just have to look closely at the nooks and crannies and keep them clean.
@@dustinstout1798 the doc did say 'Inform Yeti of this flaw' To me, that's pointing at the cup. Not saying I think it's right, just that yeah, he did say 'flaw'

@@dustinstout1798 My Yeti had clear instructions. A paper inside the cup at time of purchase. If the consumer decides to toss it without reading it, that is no blame on the company.
@@cindykoch1251 I'll take your word on this, I don't use these. I agree consumers need to take more responsibility. But this seems to be one of those things where a very high % of people are not washing it correctly, that's concerning. Worked at a Sears Parts and Service department for a few years and what was the biggest cause of customer dissatisfaction with any given product? Failure of the customer to read the directions. I find it interesting that Doc Beau has to explain this to us. He further says that "we" need to contact Yeti to explain to them there is a "flaw" where none exists over a design feature which needs special attention - which Yeti has already addressed in the owners manual.
I also worked in appliance repair etc and a similar issue is filthy refrigerator and Ice maker/machine not being cleaned as required by health dept in commercial Kitchens etc. Mold/mildew are anyplace damp and can make people deathly sick. some people dont even know they must clean dryer lint filter each load.
Thankfull that this video was suggested to me. I always clean under the rubber seal but i have a Manna coffee tumbler with a spring latch door for a straw. It cannot be removed for cleaning. I pulled it off (broke it) and it was full of mold. Im sticking to cups that can be fully disassembled for cleaning from now on. Brumate is my new favorite brand. Thank you again.
Ok, let's be clear about this. The Yeti cup did NOT "almost literally" kill the patient. The patient being a knucklehead "almost literally" killed him. Just one more example of people not taking responsibility for their actions, or in this case, non-actions.
I have both yeti and R-tic cups, when you purchase these items they have instructions inside the cup which explains to take that rubber seal off the lid and clean it.
After you clean them, allow the pieces to fully dry before putting it back together. Moisture creates mold. I've tossed so many travel mugs, sippy cups, and bottles. Some use a type of rubber or plastic that holds the mold, and you can't get it off.
Holy crap! I lived & traveled in my van for years using the same cup every day & never even washed it! And I'm still here! :D But I just checked my lid sitting right next to me & it's all gunky. :( Thanks for this.
Thank you! That was a good observation. I have a Takeya that has a clear gasket so when I saw black specs I removed it and had to use my finger nail to get some of the specs off. I don’t know why I never thought to clean the other brands but I just did. Thanks again.
Doc I thank you so much for this video. For a year and a half I kept getting gum infections over and over. My dentist said I have the beginning of periodontal disease or implant failure. I go to the dentist every six months!!! Since I am a retired cop, investigating skills kicked in. I started thinking how could this be, all of a sudden, and what have I done differently in the past year and a half. I drink one cup of coffee a day and water in my yeti the rest of the day! My yeti goes with me everywhere! I admit I was not good about washing it and I never thought about taking the lid a part, after all I only put water in it. I wish I could show you a pic of what I found in the lid once taken apart. It was filled with what I am sure was poisoning me. 3 gum infections in that time frame. I purchased a new lid because I was afraid I could not get that one bacteria free enough to trust it again. So far, knock on wood, I have been infection free since March of this year. Can’t wait to share this with my dentist when I feel safe enough (Covid-19) for my next cleaning! I pray this was the culprit. Again thank you so much for posting this. God bless and stay safe!
I agree with previous posts. The owner's negligence was at fault, not YETI as you have titled. You might want to fix that. I would also advise for the patient to NOT use the yeti for drinking shakes. Most shaker cups don't have seals for that reason, it makes them easier to clean and keep sanitary.
To keep from damaging your seal on the lid put a finger on each side of the seal and push up that should stretch the seal without causing damage and give you enough slack to get ahold of it for removal. If your fingers are too slick use a towel to help with grip. I do this all the time cleaning my cup lid. I am glad that you are alerting others to clean their cups better people do not realize the build up of bacteria alot of times.
0:28: "I have been battling this infection in my body for the past four months. In fact, I have been on five different types of antibiotics..." The organism causing the infection is not stated, or whether it is a bacteria or a virus. The part of the person's body that is infected is not mentioned or the name of their illness. Without any of that information, there is zero basis to say a dirty cup caused the infection. The patient could have HIV, chlamydia, Clostridium Difficile, or strep throat. None of those are caused by dirty cups.
The fact that he says he 'saw' the 'bacteria' says this is hogwash. Most likely this is mold, which may also explain the guys health issues and why the antibiotics didn't work on mold (if his health problems are in fact related to his cup)
Instructions have always been included that explain how to take the lid apart and clean it. You don’t take a fork or knife and wreck the rubber, you pinch a spot, which will lift a part of the rubber so you can grab and it can then be pealed off. Also, Yeti is one of many company using a similar lid design. Dont be so yeti specific. The title should be like “my patient is a dirty moron who was drinking out of a filthy cup”
It's just a public service announcement, in case people aren't aware stuff gets hidden underneath the seal, and to let Yeti know about the issue in case they want to highlight it (or make it to where the seal is permanently attached).
Exactly !!! Yeti cup didn't "almost kill" the patient, He's doing that to himself. Common sense moment here....CLEAN YOUR CUP and while you're at it, check your other dishes as well...js
He would maybe had known if they is a notice with the purchase of the cup on how to clean ! I am grateful for this video because I have dishes that have those same kind of seals on them !
Forefinger and thumb squeeze together while holding lid and rubber seal. It forms a loop. Just grab loop and seal comes right off with no damage. Fork not needed. 😊
I thought the same thing. You can't see bacteria. But yet he said he saw bacteria. The "Dr." has some good info here but you have to question the seeing bacteria.
@@cathyrussell9568 You can see Bacteria with the Naked eye. While individual cells of only a few bacterium can be seen this is why we cultivate them into colonies in incubators in petri dishes. Colonies can easily be seen and often identified by color and patterns and enhanced with dye and infrared or black light. A bacterium called Thiomargarita namibiensis (sulfur pearl of Namibia) whose individual cells can grow up to 0.75mm wide can be easily seen with the naked eye.
Bottom line: The purpose of this video is to let people know that they might not be cleaning their Yeti cups correctly. No need to be snarky. Take it for what it's supposed to be: Advice.
I have found similar issues with those food containers with rubberized seals. This is especially true if the hollow rubber seal has holes in it and dirt is getting inside of the seal instead of just between the seal and the lid.
Let's see...what he saw could have been dried coffee or whatever. If his "patient" was running it through the dish washer every night, the hear would kill ALL bacteria. Once again a chiropractor is arguing with science and facts.
@@runninglarge The heat isn't perfect and the build-up and design of the lid would likely protect the bacteria from being exposed to the maximum heat of the water. Furthermore, mechanical cleaning is far more effective than heat alone. Water agitation does a lot of that, but works best on broad and flat surfaces than on beveled and intricate surfaces like the cup lid, the edges significantly breaking the speed of the flow. There's a ton of factors here in your "science and facts" that you're oblivious to. You need to manually clean stuff like this because our technology is far from perfect.
h30202 can confirm the manufacturer advises taking apart the whole lid to wash underneath the rubber gasket. ALL YETIS come with an insert that instructs to remove the rubber gasket and get under it to clean thoroughly.
Efren Medina - Yes, it *is* common sense, but what is really wrong with the U.S. is that no one seems to be able to state an opinion without name-calling and denigrating others. And then there’s the illiteracy.... 🙄
Personally, I have always hand washed the cups I've owned because I noticed that white ring. You literally just have to look at the cups, plates, and utensils that you are using, to see if they are dirty. What a concept! But hey, its a video that needed to be made nonetheless to get peoples attention.
Doesn’t sound like it legit “almost killed him”. But I guess you wanted to make sure you grabbed people’s attention. There was probably MOLD growth. 🤢 And since it comes apart easily to clean, it’s not really a manufacturer flaw.
yes it would almost kill ya and you would get really sick fist. so clean you cups and if you have one and don't know how to take the slider off look at the instruction it almost always tells you there
good point about the "re-innoculation" everytime they use it and yes it's getting killed when the bacteria is ingested. But coming from a dental professional, not all bacteria is ingested, I highly doubt that. What most likely happened was the bacteria is transferred in/on his lips, then in his mouth for them to further multiply, and then when he brushes and flosses, the bacteria is introduced into his blood stream thus traveling throughout his body causing infections.
Very informative glad this came across! I boiled the lids of any water or coffee container but didn’t knew about this new ways of removing and washing thank you!
He’s completely misguided. I love my Yeti cup because how easy they are to clean. The rubber ring is easily removed by using a dry towel to pinch it together until it pops up. It is very difficult to accomplish this with wet hands, so that might explain his problem. I remove the ring and wash the entire cup after each use and if I’m running the dishwasher that day, all pieces are dishwasher safe, including the rubber ring. I put the ring over a spoke on the top shelf and place the cup over it to keep the ring from going where it shouldn’t. A lot of travel cups have no way to clean the lid, he shouldn’t be complaining about one that does just because someone can’t read instructions.
Thank you for bringing it to people's attention. I take the seal ring out and wash it. You can see black build up even after 2 uses is you don't remove it and clean.
Yeti is a GREAT cup! I’ve got one and my whole family uses yeti cups of all sizes! The cup was NOT the problem here, and YET IT WAS - as pointed out by several comments: it’s COMMON SENSE that you need to clean the lids of ALL TYPES of cups including the STRAWS. The problem here is that people don’t know how to follow simple instructions! Or to use (not so) common sense... Moral and point: Use Hot water and soap to soak/scrub your lids and rinse carefully. If you don’t have time to scrub, use White Vinegar and set the lid inside a bowl with hot water and vinegar over night then rinse. But great service announcement!
The two problem spots on my cup are under the sliding cap (mine's not magnetic), and under the rubber seal. And no, a dishwasher can't get there. I have small kids with sippy cups and water bottles so I deal with this all the time. For those without kids, many think their cup is clean, but most the hidden areas. Bad headline, but valid point.
I was curious about the "Doctor" title so I looked it up and this is what I found. "Chiropractors typically graduate from an accredited chiropractic school. They do not have an MD or DO degree from a medical school; instead, they earn a D.C. (Doctor of Chiropractic) degree. Currently, chiropractic candidates are not required to have a bachelor's degree before entering chiropractic school." This was as of 2018. HOLY MOLY that does not instil alot of trust in "medical" information, but with that said, this "D.C." is correct about washing the seal of the cup, the same said should be said for cleaning the seal of you blender with soap and water. It is common sense....sadly few people do.
Maybe you should know what the innoculate means The meanings of inoculate include: 1. To communicate a disease to a living organism by transferring its causative agent into the organism. 2. The introduction of a microorganism or an agent of disease into an host organism or a growth medium.
Thanks for this! I use a unfolded paper clip to take the seal off. This may seem like a dumb question. But should you clean under the seal each time you clean the lid?
Long ago stopped buying thermos and regular drinking containers with rubber pieces. It's best to consider how much wash and dry time maintenance is needed for those types of containers to be thoroughly clean, free from bacteria and moist areas that can harbor bacteria.
I bought a Yeti Rambler Lowball yesterday. Last night a friend told me about the lid needing to be cleaned meticulously, then I watched a couple of videos like this one. I bought the Yeti for one particular purpose: keeping my coffee hot in the morning while I'm drinking it. Yeti's not going on any road trips with me. So I removed the neoprene gasket from the lid and put it with my receipt for the mug. I will be using the lid without the gasket, only as a loose cover for my morning coffee. I won't be sipping coffee through it. Then I'll wash it along with the mug using my Scrub Daddy sponge. Does this curtailed usage end my fever dreams of Yeti ecstasy? No doubt. But the thought of all that high maintenance required if I sealed the top as intended made my decision an easy one. The coffee will be fine.
I’ve never used a dishwasher to clean any travel mugs as I thought it would melt them in one way or another. I tend to scrub my travel mug rigorously as it’s gross by the time I get home. After drinking coffee while commuting to work I rinse the mug as soon as I get to work and use my work coffee mug which I clean before every use. And by the time I get home I’m going to scrub my travel mug to get rid of the stale coffee smell despite rinsing after use. I never thought it could make a person sick.
Ya but those cup companies should warn people to do what he did and pull the seal off and the magnet. I would say a good 75 to 85% don't even know the seal comes off
Every single person I know removes the lids and cleans the seals properly....why add labels? Remove them and let natural selection run the course! Dolts
Why do you think disposable coffee cups have warnings of hot liquid? Cause a woman spilled her hot coffee on herself and sued because there was no warning! She was awarded millions from McDonald's when she won in court. Companies need to assume that everyone is dumb and put every warning so they can't be sued for something that is common sense.
@@2paranoid2think That's actually false. She sued (and won) not because the coffee was hot but because it was excessively so which resulted in severe burns and hospitalizations.
I'll preface by saying I do not own a Yeti so have never seen the directions for cleaning, but if taking the gasket off requires a fork or other tool that could damage the gasket, AND "properly cleaning" the cup requires removing that gasket, then that is a design flaw in the cup. If I start disassembling an expensive cup and see that I'm about to damage it, I'm VERY likely to conclude that I'm not supposed to do that.
Thank you!! I didn't know the rubber part could be removed. My cups from other brands don't have that ability. My Yeti cup was a gift so I did not have the box or instructions. Good thing I've only used it a few times!!

I'm an OTR truck driver and I always just give my cups a quick rinse at truck stops with water and not really thinking about it. Partly because I'm always exhausted so thanks for waking me up to this. Funny how the simplest things in life can be overlooked.
@reinajenkins2185 I drive a semi too. I treat mine like a petri dish. If whatever grows in there doesn't kill me... it'll definitely kill anybody else who steals my thermos! XD
That’s not just Yeti cups. That’s the case with every single travel mug.
And blenders. There's a seal between the blades and the bottom of the blender.
Not all of them use the brilliant magslider though
Yeah well it's not just travel mugs, literall everything, if you dont wash your plates, forks, spoons, etc. It will build bacteria. I thought this was just common sense
children's sippy cups with gaskets too!

great point !
Me too. Broke 8 ribs and a shoulder after flying like superman...
You are right on
You are VERY right! It's a consumer flaw!!!
Yes! it took forever for me to find a travel mug that would allow me to fully clean the lid.
Chill out buddy
When I was a medic in the Navy a sailor came in constantly with GI issues. Doctors couldn't figure it out, IDC couldn't figure it out, but me being a lowly E-3 figured it out. His can opener at home was not being washed.
Same thing with baby stuff. some of those bottles have tiny Knick knacks crooks & crannies - perfect hiding spot
What a blessing it is to be enlightened. Most importantly that something so simple can either make you (anyone) sick or kill you (anyone). I'm truly very appreciative to learn & hear that.
You're not a doctor. And this dude deserves a Darwin Award.
A chiropractor is considered a "doctor," specifically a "Doctor of Chiropractic" (DC), meaning they have completed a doctorate level of education, but they are not medical doctors (MDs) as they do not hold a medical degree; instead, they specialize in the musculoskeletal system and spinal adjustments.
It never occurred to me to remove the seals on my thermo mugs since I thought I was washing them well. After watching your video I took a look and was disgusted by what I found under the seals. Using a small brush and pipe cleaners got in all the nooks and crannies of the lid I never really paid attention to before. It is now my firm belief that these companies need to give better instructions on maintaining their mugs so that people do not get sick. Thanks for posting this eye opening video on a disgusting topic.
While researching magnesium to regenerate my brain, nerves & nervous system due to acquiring Alzheimer's & Multiple Sclerosis thru Covid-19 vax 12/10/21 & already having Complex Regional Pain Syndrome - all nerve diseases I saw this video on your site. My dear hubby who also acquired Alzheimer's due to COVID-19 vax had been washing his own tea containers similar to yeti but not that brand...one day I looked closely at them & to my horror they looked like a dirty aquarium full of algae & black mold! When I showed it to him he shrugged & said a lil mold/bacteria never killed anyone! That was BEFORE he had Alzheimer's...I have 5 immune diseases. If he gets sick & transfers it to me it might definitely kill me. Thank you for a VERY informative video! I'm sharing it to him now!
I didn’t dare to remove it thinking it’s hard to put it back
Same for children's sippy cups and bottles. The bacteria grows so fast when sugar is present.
I’m so detail oriented I don’t even purchase cups or dishes that have crevices or seals you can’t clean thoroughly by hand. I am all about hand washing dishes thoroughly!
My biggest pet peeve with dishes is crevices lol
OurLittleHomestead I know! Me too. When seals won’t come out or you can’t reach them, or built in straws with small spaces and crevices you can’t get to or remove. Drives me nuts.
Yes yes yes
Some of these are nasty.
Get the brushes for cleaning the straws. I do mine pretty often with hot, soapy water.
2019 folks....we blame the cup for almost killing the person and not the person for not washing it.
No one blamed the cup. Sometimes people need to be educated, that's all.
@@dustinstout1798 the doc did say 'Inform Yeti of this flaw' To me, that's pointing at the cup. Not saying I think it's right, just that yeah, he did say 'flaw'
@@dhelven Perhaps the flaw is that they need to make it clear on their instructions on how to properly clean the cup. I would make it very clear and apparent, as I suspect a lot of people are not properly cleaning the removable parts.
This is great advice. Common sense is a man's best friend, and fortunately for your client, you were on top of your game that day.

He saw “bacteria”...
probably mold...which if all this is actually related to his health problems, it would explain why the antibiotics did nothing.

I saw “patient” and thought doctor, and then you corrected me.
Guess his subscription to "Well Duh!" magazine hadn't arrived.
After you clean them, allow the pieces to fully dry before putting it back together. Moisture creates mold. I've tossed so many travel mugs, sippy cups, and bottles. Some use a type of rubber or plastic that holds the mold, and you can't get it off.
Not the cups fault he didn't properly clean his cup...I've had a ozark cup just like that for 2 years and never had a problem cleaning mine

Great pun Yeti
Same here. When he advised to use a fork, I was like, “NOOOO!”
@@gilph3 This is a technique I learned to get o-rings off of icecream machine parts for cleaning.
0:28: "I have been battling this infection in my body for the past four months. In fact, I have been on five different types of antibiotics..."
The organism causing the infection is not stated, or whether it is a bacteria or a virus. The part of the person's body that is infected is not mentioned or the name of their illness.
Without any of that information, there is zero basis to say a dirty cup caused the infection. The patient could have HIV, chlamydia, Clostridium Difficile, or strep throat. None of those are caused by dirty cups.
Or lyme disease like me.
The fact that he says he 'saw' the 'bacteria' says this is hogwash. Most likely this is mold, which may also explain the guys health issues and why the antibiotics didn't work on mold (if his health problems are in fact related to his cup)
I thought that too.
How could he see the bacteria?
Instructions have always been included that explain how to take the lid apart and clean it. You don’t take a fork or knife and wreck the rubber, you pinch a spot, which will lift a part of the rubber so you can grab and it can then be pealed off. Also, Yeti is one of many company using a similar lid design. Dont be so yeti specific. The title should be like “my patient is a dirty moron who was drinking out of a filthy cup”
i knew the seal came off, but i didnt know the slider part came off! Thank you!
So it wasn't the cup, it was his failure to clean the cup properly. Don't blame it on the cup!
Exactly what I thought! The patient didn't have common sense to see the build up of crap and think, "Golly, I should wash this crud off?"
It's just a public service announcement, in case people aren't aware stuff gets hidden underneath the seal, and to let Yeti know about the issue in case they want to highlight it (or make it to where the seal is permanently attached).

I have found similar issues with those food containers with rubberized seals. This is especially true if the hollow rubber seal has holes in it and dirt is getting inside of the seal instead of just between the seal and the lid.
How do you see "bacteria?"

Justin Ridela if you don’t clean the bacteria is grows rapidly and it’s very easy to see colony growth :)

Few ddd#@-"
@@runninglarge The heat isn't perfect and the build-up and design of the lid would likely protect the bacteria from being exposed to the maximum heat of the water. Furthermore, mechanical cleaning is far more effective than heat alone. Water agitation does a lot of that, but works best on broad and flat surfaces than on beveled and intricate surfaces like the cup lid, the edges significantly breaking the speed of the flow. There's a ton of factors here in your "science and facts" that you're oblivious to. You need to manually clean stuff like this because our technology is far from perfect.
The makers of the cups know this. It's probably written on the box or leaflet on how to clean them properly. Normally they give a spare silicon ring.
h30202 can confirm the manufacturer advises taking apart the whole lid to wash underneath the rubber gasket. ALL YETIS come with an insert that instructs to remove the rubber gasket and get under it to clean thoroughly.

good point about the "re-innoculation" everytime they use it and yes it's getting killed when the bacteria is ingested.
Glad it was helpful!
Additionally, it is ‘he has COME back to my office...’ not “he has CAME back to my office several times.”

This may seem like a dumb question. But should you clean under the seal each time you clean the lid?
So you saw bacteria with your naked eyes?
You could "see" bacteria around the lids seal? Did you mean mold? If you saw "bacteria," you must have some amazing vision as bacteria is microscopic.
Long ago stopped buying thermos and regular drinking containers with rubber pieces. It's best to consider how much wash and dry time maintenance is needed for those types of containers to be thoroughly clean, free from bacteria and moist areas that can harbor bacteria.

Common sense is not that common.
It sounds like what almost killed him was not properly cleaning his cups, not the Yeti cup itself.
Very diplomatic way to tell people they don’t pay attention.
Why would someone not know to remove and clean their cup seal?
"...he has came back"
Thank you!! I didn't know the rubber part could be removed. My cups from other brands don't have that ability. My Yeti cup was a gift so I did not have the box or instructions. Good thing I've only used it a few times!!
That's why you wash it by hand daily clean under the seal
