  • The McLaren 570S is now at the end of its production run. A replacement will be here soon, but this means there are some bargains to be had for those wanting a new supercar.
My friend James and his father both recently picked up brand new McLarens, and today I am driving James' 570S Spider.

Currently own a 570GT , only had one issue, the sponge inside the front off side tyre came lose causing a wheel wobble at 70 mph.
Apart from that no other issues.
I agree it’s probably to fast for the road , however I think the review could have gone into more detail about the driver settings , launch control, brake feel etc.
The 570 GT is the one to go for, looks the best designed of the sports series, slightly less focused, but unless you spend all the time on the track don’t bother.
I have tracked my 570 at Anglesey, it’s was awesome.
These McLaren’s were designed by ex Lotus engineers, hence the similar type driving experience , the 570 is like a Lotus on steroids.

Ride, handling and performance truely amazing on road and on track. Not sure why anyone needs more bhp. 🤔 This is what Lotus should have developed the Espirt into. It is interesting, I have been looking at Ferrari 458's and love the car, but when you look many have very low milages and have often had 5 or 6 owners. Similar aged McLarens have often had one owner and have higher milages. This has started me looking at McLarens rather than the Italian cars. Clearly the ownership and drivability are better than the oposition.

Interested to hear your opinions as I’ve spent a fair while in a 540c
On track it made complete sense (grown up Lotus Evora) however on the road it almost felt to much of a car. What I mean by that is simply to quick for the road. The power is way to accessible and before I knew it I was breaking the speed limit and by some margin. Again car had very low miles but was delivered with issues 🤬
Wasn’t mine so wasn’t overly concerned.
I honestly feel that a well driven 650 LT would be almost unbeatable on a track like Brands, utterly blistering!
    Again issues with quality.
I’d wait until you can get one for 50k then buy One and a 991 911 C2S for when it’s in the garage 🤪

What do you think of the paddle shifters being on the steering wheel like german manufacturers versus on the steering column in a fixed position? I have always preferred the Ferrari approach, but Mclaren are a little different... the toggle switch benefit and bigger paddles generally.

I really prefer the 570S both in looks and spec. The 720S is outrageously fast for road use... my Turbo S is already ridiculous and it competes in performance nicely with the 570 (but has AWD so is arguably easier to make use of the power). If I get a McLaren ever, it will likely not be the 720S imho.

I drove the sport series twice, didn’t impress me much. Always thought a 570S would be the ideal car, affordable second hand (depreciation is a massive issues) or terrific leasing deal. But then I had the opportunity to drive one on my “home” track Bilster Berg for 40 minutes.
Electronics in standard setting are very intrusive, had to put it into track mode, otherwise it would kill any power as long as you are still having some steering angle dialled in. Front axle terrific, brakes sensational, engine very powerful (though a bit emotionless)... all good... but the very loose rear axle really destroyed the car for me. Difficult to control when driven 10/10ths, almost scary for an amateur like myself (and I am not too bad / slow / inexperienced). The instructors on the day confirmed my observations, 2019 models became a new rear axle kinematic that shall help, semi slicks seems to help, putting a wing on (now you can get it OEM) or a proper KW suspension also seem to mitigate the loose rear end.
Everybody who is more into McL tells me SuperSeries is superior by light years, eben a MP4 would be preferable over the Sport Series (except 600LT).

Nice balanced review Jay, it's a crying shame Mcclaren still haven't got round to dealing with the quality assurance issues, I am amazed anyone buying this type of vehicle would tolerate that level of poor service at this price point. It really is not a difficult issue to resolve I would know...if they are not careful it is going to hold them back for years to come...

    • @Tracertme
      @Tracertme 4 ปีที่แล้ว

@@JayEmmOnCars I look forward to it... :-) so much has been written on the internet about this topic it might be novel to speak with Mclaren and ask them to comment on video, (interview) what they are practically doing to resolve it. Otherwise the issue never goes away. They probably won't comment for fear of fueling or acknowledging there ever was an issue, but that would be poor management judgement in a digital era. Give them a platform to voice the positive other side aspects of their practical program to improve things... instead of a one sided user experience.... To often the internet is all about the bad and not enough about the good and as we well know has a poor impact on social behaviour.

JayEmm on Cars ..it’s difficult to say as I don’t know his driving style 🤓 . If his is like my wife’s (binary “on verses off” 😩) then perhaps, but real speed is about maintaining momentum. The 570 is not a heavy car when compared against likes of say a DB9 I once had, and to be fair my (uber light) Lotus 2-11 ate pads much quicker than I had anticipated... however I was taking that around much more tight and twisting track layouts. It just seems a criticism that’s not seen a lot of press elsewhere or has been made by other owners... particularly since carbon ceramics are specifically designed for high intensity use anyway. Ho hum. Glad to see you are back in action post Covid lock down and enjoy the 550 😍... but do start saving in the maintenance piggy bank for her 😉

@@jonathancollard3710 Saving already begun for the 550!
To be honest, re McLaren brakes, wearing fast on track wouldn't be unusual. I have known Hondas, Audis, etc... to all eat through ceramics in heavy use. A lot of track day companies or car rental firms use steels for their greater longevity, and sometimes easier pedal feel (but McLaren got that perfect)

Other manufacturers are now catching them up in the 'bland exhaust note' stakes.
