A Channel About Video Games started realized. Turned it off stopped at the store on the way home to ensure I had a sweet sweet refreshing drink to have while I finished the episode.
You guys are absolutely right about how heavily a finish can change flavors. There's an aged rum I love called Dos Maderas, and they have two versions at our stores. 5+3 and 5+5 (referring to aging/finishing). They are Caribbean rums aged for 5 years in oak casks, which is pretty standard. Then they ship them to Spain age them for 3 years in Oloroso sherry casks. So you get a slightly salty, nutty, fruity taste from the sea and the sherry in both. But the 5+5 batch is aged for only 2 more years in Pedro Ximenez barrels, often as old as 20-25 years. The difference between these two rums is mindblowing. It's easily worth the extra 10 bucks, but the flavor is spectacular. You can taste the syrupy sweet sherry, with the burnt butterscotch taste of the rum following after. I've been so interested in a Scotch finished in such barrels, but they are a bit out of my price range at the moment, lol.

I know y'all shy away from these types of vids but they SO educational you don't even know...It's like distilling (no pun intended) 10 videos into one as far as information and "takeaways".

Hey Guys, Been watching the channel for several months now and I've been able to expand my whisk(e)y collection in an informed and intelligent way. I was recently on a short layover in Austin (sorry for not visiting) but I was able to pick up a bottle of Balcones Baby Blue at a Total Wine (best liquor store I've ever been in!) and bring it back to Colorado to share among the people. As an educator, I really appreciate your attention to details and facts and helping your tribe make and informed decision (both of you), but I also appreciate that you don't take yourselves so seriously and enjoy a good bit of fun while teaching us (the people, as Rex puts it) about the wonderful world of whisk(e)y. Cheers, and keep up the good work teaching and drinking!
When i get myself in the USA, i must try to find some of those whiskeys to buy for me ! Really liked the list ! Very unique ! That is the video where i wanted to taste these whiskeys you showed the most, out of all your videos ! Shame we don't have such a big variety of rare whiskeys here in Greece... And even if we did, they would cost maybe even double the price, because of the currency and the taxes... One day friends... One day...
Rex’s comment about grape jelly and honey brought back such a sense memory for me; when I was a kid I used to get a spoonful of grape jelly and then put honey on it as a snack. Now when I have that Jefferson’s that’s all I can taste and it’s so nostalgic I love it.

Completely agree with you on the sourcing issue, as long as it's clear that sourcing is being done go crazy. It should have to be on the bottle though.
Great list! I love the Jefferson's Ocean. Their Cask Strength is particularly amazing. I have a bottle from Voyage 10. That's my favorite bourbon with Angel's Envy a close second. I think Angel's Envy Finished Rye might be my absolute favorite whiskey, though, which is saying something considering I'm a long-time Scotch drinker.

Different retailers have different overhead and have to charge different margins on product. They also have likely paid different prices than other retailers based on how much volume they purchased (also in relation to how much was available). There are too many variables to each store/venue that prevent a distillery to dictate what a store charges for their product. They can only control what price they sell it at initially.
@@evansgoff476 Here in Iowa, the state controls the liquor prices. The state used to own all the retail stores, but about 20 years ago, they allowed privately own stores. But, all the liquor comes into the state through the states warehouse in Des Moines, and they distribute to the retailers. Private distributors in Iowa only distribute beer and non alcoholic mixers.

You need to go to the states that don't let you mark up MSRP like Oregon for example you can only buy bottles from liquor stores for the suggested retail price States like California on the other hand you going to the liquor stores and a bottle like of McAllen 21 a $500 bottle will have it for $1,000 on the shelf or a bottle of pappy for $1,500 so just know that

Been a fan of whiskey/this channel for 2 years now and just learned that ruby port is by far the most common finishing port! Next trip to the store will include a few bottles of different ruby so I can understand port finishes better, thanks for the tip!

Which ones? What order? I'll be heading to the store to get some more Glencairns. Should I pick up a bottle of something different? The tasting will be around 7pm. What should we have for dinner? Should we eat before or after tasting? Give me all your thoughts. Much appreciated. P.S. Before I started watching your channel I owned 3 bottles of whiskey now I have 16. That was 3 months ago. RIP my wallet.
I'm certainly not an expert, but I would vote to do dinner before the tasting. You may want to give it 30 or 45 minutes afterwards with some water, but that way no one is drinking on an empty stomach. As far as what you should eat, I'd say whatever you can get everyone to agree on. Getting more than 3 or 4 people to agree on food can be like herding cats. As far as which whiskeys, it would depend on what you're trying to do. Are you just showing how different whiskey can be? Do you want something from each major whiskey country? Highlighting the differences in Scotch whiskys or American whiskeys?

Just started watching to get more into whiskeys. Really glad I stumbled on your channel. You guys are very entertaining and straight forward about the different whiskeys in a very easy to understand way. That said, I've been watching for three hours now and have been laughing hysterically. Currently working on a bottle of High West Whiskey, American Prairie Bourbon. It took a while to actually drink it but by the time I got to a third video of you guys I was actually starting to enjoy my small pour of it. Keep up the good work and I'll keep sipping!
Ice wine is made from grapes left on the vine and are harvested after the first freeze. Very much a desert wine sweet, raisiny and delicious. Usually white grapes
We were in Jackson Hole and Afton last year. Much enjoyed our time in Wyoming. But never tasted that whiskey. We also visited Devils tower. Location of Close Encounters.

I usually lurk, but just wanted to say you guys really helped me get out of my comfort zone. My wallet is thinner, but my taste has been enlightened. Keep up the great work really enjoy the show. PS: I live in Michigan and craft brew, and distillery is booming. I'll be looking out for a unique Bourbon to send from a craft distillery from Michi. I heard good things about Traverse City so I'll be trying that first.
Makers Mark is what got me into bourbon, with their 'Ambassador' program years back, where you got your name on a barrel and then they sent out free stuff every Christmas.
I hope you guys still read comments a year later. Just found your channel, love it, plowed through like 5 videos already. I am a big bourbon guy, from Kentucky, it’s a birthright, gotta love the best whiskey, like you gotta love the best basketball team. But anyway. I’ve been trying to mimic your sampling technique, swirling, sniffing, etc, but I just don’t really smell anything. Is there a way to train your pallet? I’ve had lots of different whiskies, and have preferences and all that, so I don’t have a novice pallet, but I don’t ever really get a lot of the different flavors or smells. Normally not much more then the big ones, the caramels, vanillas, spices, smoke. So just didn’t know if there was anything to do to expand my pallet, or have a life time of allergies doomed me?
Hey, just read your comment and I am on the same journey. Bought a variety of bottles and have been sniffing/sipping and 90% of the time just come away with alcohol lol BUT, every once in a while, I get a hint of something else. Your comment is a year old, so I would assume you're already past the part where you need advice, but I will share anyway. Like they say, keep the glass far away, and slowly work closer to reduce the amount of "burn" from the alcohol. Also, smell with your mouth open, so it doesn't get trapped in your nose which will also cause the "burn" that prevents smelling anything else. And lastly, Whiskey.com lists the smell and tasting notes associated with each whiskey, so a good hack is to get your hands on what is in there (cinnamon, vanilla, cherry etc...) and smell it, then smell the whiskey. Smelling it first will help increase the chances of you catching it in the whiskey. And obviously time and experience is the biggest contributor lol Hope this helps if you still needed it :)
My favorite local brewery in south Denver metro uses various law's barrels for aging some beers from time to time. Bourbon barrel aged baltic porter being one of my favorites
So......ya pushed me over the edge. I had to pick up my first bottle of Angels Envy. I do enjoy/mooch a glass of port once in a while, with my friend, while we discuss literature. I’ve smelled that shoe, so I thought it would fit.....haven’t yet tried to “Ware” it!
Love me Jefferson's ocean. It was the first whiskey I tried that wasn't budget. I liked the concept and boyyyy was it good. I'm glad I'm not the only one
So happy the Belle Meade Madeira got a spot here... it's a very unique and interesting bourbon. One of my top favorites I've ever had. Highly recommend it but it's around 80$ a bottle
Oh wow, just checked the local liquorstore and they've gotten something i've not seen before. It's a duo of Highland Park, Fire Edition and Ice Edition. Now, they're far above my current budget, but just out of curiosity, if you guys get a hold of those, i think it would an interesting opportunity for some comparison and reviewing to be done.
Jefferson didn't like whiskey, but he stood up for the small distillers in the argument against the ideology of Hamilton, who wanted to only have large distilleries and put the small farm distilleries out of business.
Awesome video guys. Got some news for y'all being Daniel is from Waco. Barnetts whisky pub is about to be the largest whisky bar in Texas with over 500 bottles. And they are having an event on the Feb 3rd with discounted whisky on that day. Should be awesome.
I had the chance to go to Neslons Green brier distillery where they do Belle Meade and it was incredible experience. I got to try everything they make and sell. Honestly i would probably go back to Nashville just so i could try it all again

Got AD Laws 4 grain from caskers since i saw this and DAMN!! it is amazing! high quality, great diversity in flavors ! definitely a wonderful boubon for the price range!

Lagavulin 16 has such a deep flavor - it’s like looking at the Grand Canyon - so much detail in one glance it’s hard to take all of it in at once

I'm certainly not an expert, but I would vote to do dinner before the tasting. You may want to give it 30 or 45 minutes afterwards with some water, but that way no one is drinking on an empty stomach. As far as what you should eat, I'd say whatever you can get everyone to agree on. Getting more than 3 or 4 people to agree on food can be like herding cats.
As far as which whiskeys, it would depend on what you're trying to do. Are you just showing how different whiskey can be? Do you want something from each major whiskey country? Highlighting the differences in Scotch whiskys or American whiskeys?

Just started watching to get more into whiskeys. Really glad I stumbled on your channel. You guys are very entertaining and straight forward about the different whiskeys in a very easy to understand way. That said, I've been watching for three hours now and have been laughing hysterically. Currently working on a bottle of High West Whiskey, American Prairie Bourbon. Ice wine is made from grapes left on the vine and are harvested after the first freeze. Very much a desert wine sweet, raisiny and delicious. Usually white grapes

player9195 it really is good.. Germans even pour it over ice cream..imagine how much grape juice you get from raisins..that's ice wine..
The yield for icewine grapes is half (maybe a bit more) of what you get from a traditional press. It took 28 lbs to get one gallon of juice this year.

PS: I live in Michigan and craft brew, and distillery is booming. I'll be looking out for a unique Bourbon to send from a craft distillery from Michi. I heard good things about Traverse City so I'll be trying that first.
Makers Mark is what got me into bourbon, with their 'Ambassador' program years back, where you got your name on a barrel and then they sent out free stuff every Christmas.

I hope you guys still read comments a year later. Just found your channel, love it, plowed through like 5 videos already. I am a big bourbon guy, from Kentucky, it’s a birthright, gotta love the best whiskey, like you gotta love the best basketball team. But anyway. I’ve been trying to mimic your sampling technique, swirling, sniffing, etc, but I just don’t really smell anything. Is there a way to train your pallet? I’ve had lots of different whiskies, and have preferences and all that, so I don’t have a novice pallet, but I don’t ever really get a lot of the different flavors or smells. Normally not much more then the big ones, the caramels, vanillas, spices, smoke. So just didn’t know if there was anything to do to expand my pallet, or have a life time of allergies doomed me?
Hey, just read your comment and I am on the same journey. Bought a variety of bottles and have been sniffing/sipping and 90% of the time just come away with alcohol lol BUT, every once in a while, I get a hint of something else. Your comment is a year old, so I would assume you're already past the part where you need advice, but I will share anyway. Like they say, keep the glass far away, and slowly work closer to reduce the amount of "burn" from the alcohol. Also, smell with your mouth open, so it doesn't get trapped in your nose which will also cause the "burn" that prevents smelling anything else. And lastly, Whiskey.com lists the smell and tasting notes associated with each whiskey, so a good hack is to get your hands on what is in there (cinnamon, vanilla, cherry etc...) and smell it, then smell the whiskey. Smelling it first will help increase the chances of you catching it in the whiskey. And obviously time and experience is the biggest contributor lol Hope this helps if you still needed it :)
My favorite local brewery in south Denver metro uses various law's barrels for aging some beers from time to time. Bourbon barrel aged baltic porter being one of my favorites

So......ya pushed me over the edge. I had to pick up my first bottle of Angels Envy. I do enjoy/mooch a glass of port once in a while, with my friend, while we discuss literature. I’ve smelled that shoe, so I thought it would fit.....haven’t yet tried to “Ware” it!
Love me Jefferson's ocean. It was the first whiskey I tried that wasn't budget. I liked the concept and boyyyy was it good. I'm glad I'm not the only one
So happy the Belle Meade Madeira got a spot here... it's a very unique and interesting bourbon. One of my top favorites I've ever had. Highly recommend it but it's around 80$ a bottle
Oh wow, just checked the local liquorstore and they've gotten something i've not seen before. It's a duo of Highland Park, Fire Edition and Ice Edition. Now, they're far above my current budget, but just out of curiosity, if you guys get a hold of those, i think it would an interesting opportunity for some comparison and reviewing to be done.
Jefferson didn't like whiskey, but he stood up for the small distillers in the argument against the ideology of Hamilton, who wanted to only have large distilleries and put the small farm distilleries out of business.

I had the chance to go to Neslons Green brier distillery where they do Belle Meade and it was incredible experience. I got to try everything they make and sell. Honestly i would probably go back to Nashville just so i could try it all again
