A little trick that I've seen on a couple other ~20 min vids is to put witty banter while running their end card so that people stay to hear it while looking at your related links. I haven't found any research that's been done, but it probably increases click-rate and retention time. 19:12-19:25 would've been a great opportunity to include some funny banter from after filming when you were just chilling. Just my two cents, personally I watch all your vids anyway :P
"May those who love us love us, and may those who hate us, may God turn their hearts and if He can not turn their hearts, may He turn their ankles so that we may know them by their limping."
As someone who has been drinking whisky for years now, this video pretty much condenses all the most important ideas and thoughts I've learned on how to enjoy whisky into one video. Great stuff. For extra nerd points, start a whisky journal and write tasting notes on everything you drink. Super helpful when you're trying to remember "that one awesome whisky you had that time that tasted like pork crackling".
I love this whiskey series of MR so much, Daniel seem to be able to tell any story in the world and it will be fascinating. That toast in the end is brilliant, by the way!
This guy is so chill. Doesn’t judge but educates. I am just getting into the finer parts of drinking whiskey and he makes it apparent that you don’t have to be Bougie to appreciate the beverage.
The second half of this video took an emotional turn. I would love to sit down with this guy and just talk about everything under the sun in fluid succession until 2/3 of a bottle was gone.
This guy is very chill and seems like a nice guy irl. The way he conveys the conversation, the body lang, the eye contact with both of them, the ability to parry any jokes or comments with his jokes or comments and all of it going seamless. There is a certain skill in that. It's a pleasant thing to watch.
After watching The Whiskey Vault for months now, I'm rewatching these, and I know why Rex isn't there. There's *no way* he'd wait that long to drink the whiskey!
I think this video is the best out of the three whisk(e)y series. I'm 23 years old, been drinking beer since I was 16, and it never occured to me that tasting a beverage (alcoholic or not) could bring you back to past memories. I suddenly feel the need to go through this experience.
It's true. First time I drank buffalo trace it brought my back to baseball as a kid. Cherry licorice and leather. Makes me feel like it's summer. Fantastic.
I've been drinking whisky occasionally for years, but never really thinking about it this much. Always simply "this is a 12 year, it'll be different, also expensive-er". Now suddenly I want to go back to all the whiskies I've had and try it again. The best part is how "human" this sounds, easy to understand, but with hard science explained well. It sounds like how my friends would explain things to me.
If I can make some recommendations to ya my friend: Monkey Shoulder Blended Scotch. Affordable, amazing, and a very sweet blended scotch. Highland Park Magnus. Another affordable, but still, very kickass single malt scotch. Smokey, without being overpowering. Jameson. A classic of Irish whiskies. Maker's Mark. Just a straight down home plate, simple bourbon. Nikka Taketsuru Pure Malt Whisky. The Japanese here have made a real kickass whisky that I'd be proud to drink. Sweet, fruity, and damn delicious. And of course, good ol' Jack Daniels Old No. 7. A staple, and an American classic. For an expensive scotch, Ardbeg 20 year Single Malt Scotch. Aggressive and refined. Best to save this one for a very special occasion, lol. Good luck on your reignited whiskey journey my friend!
Whiskey is easy. Go find a shop that sells it, try a few out and get a general idea of what your tastes are. The flavors you enjoy. The employees can help you from there.
Pipes are easy. Go find a shop that sells them, try a few out and get a general idea of what your tastes are. The flavors you enjoy. The employees can help you from there.
Papa Bless I dont perticularly care for these kinds of episodes as I dont care to drink. I prefer the other kinds of episodes they do. I do however see why people enjpy these episodes
This validates so many lonely nights in the crowd in Houston and Austin. Friends thinking I was already drunk or a melancholic, but maybe it was just visceral memories. Thanks for the deep dive.
I've been a whiskey tribe member and a MB for years...Randomly TH-cam linked this as the next video after watching their most current episode...This was the most fun and best video of Daniel breaking down the tasting process I've ever seen....You have a gem on your channel that I've never seen on theirs. Cheers to the magic.....(Edit)...Annnd, just checked out your other videos. Subscribed. :-)
I've heard my Irish grandfather give the same toast that Daniel gave at the end. Other than me and my grandfather, I've never heard anyone else say it. Good stuff guys.
These episodes on whisky made me think about drinking a whole lot different! I never thought about drinking alcohol as something you should just try out in many different ways and let the right side of your brain take over through memories and random thoughts. Thank you so much for making this!
This is all perfect considering I just turned 21 just a few days ago! I'll be reviewing all of your videos on cocktails, beer, and whiskey, as well as a few other sources, to get a good idea of what it is I'm doing and then I can't wait to explore all of these different things I've been held back from (legally) for 2 decades, especially whiskey! (at least when I can work myself up to drinking that strong of alcohol easily!)
I rarely ever drink, but watching these videos, and listening to the whiskey wizard talk just makes me want to sip on whiskey while watching all of them in succession.
That right brain thinking is spot on. One of the first things that came to mind when I tried Laphroaig was going surfing in winter, reminded me of the ocean air and chimney smoke.
Lagavulin 16, I'm at Uni with my oldest friend from school, We're working our merry way through ALL the scotches on the sizeable bar menu at the Chillingham Arms (A stones-throw away from our student-house) on Chillingham Rd, Newcastle-Upon-Tyne, England, When we happened across this one. It was many years ago, But every Christmas since, I've had a bottle of it. It has been enjoyed time and time again as the 1st. I remember each time us looking at each other as if to comprehend "what the hell is this, Why is this the 1st time we've found this amazing drop !?" It was an epiphany. Incredible. We've both had many since, But we both concur, None was finer than that first sip of Lagavulin.
I know this is a year old but still. I've been watching a few of these and I've learned so much...its crazy. I never thought this way about alcohol, and am no stranger to having a nice drink either.
The bit about smell being influenced by your brain reminded me of a session in Culinary School, where a woman from the Culinary Science department at NECI came in and provided us with clear plastic cups with totally clear water in them. She told us to first smell them, and all we could smell was incredibly strong lemonade. Almost like pure sugary lemon concentrate. Then she told us to drink it with our nose plugged. There was no flavor whatsoever. It was just water. Then we tasted it without our nose plugged, and it was like drinking lemonade. It was essentially a consomme of lemon water. It was incredible.
I thought it was funny because the whiskey expert always has some profound way of describing the experience of a whiskey and he just goes ya it makes my tongue tingly XD
I literally couldn't smell whisky without gagging and the taste was disgusting to me, but I went out and bought a bottle of good reviewed whisky, followed along the video, and for the first time enjoyed a sip of the drink I just had. Thank you very much.
This guy is just amazing ! The way he looks in their eyes and tell them stories about science and teaching them to taste and smell. This is something I have trouble all my life. Man !! There's just so much to feel in this life than to get good grades and make money.
This is insanely interesting. I'm definitely ordering a whiskey when I go out tonight. Also I'm Scottish and we make the best whiskeys! Haha! I win suckers!
You apostate! Those are fighting words to me and my southern bourbon brethren. But joking aside I find most most scotch whiskys smokier than I would prefer.
I think you mean "heathen". A heathen is someone who doesn't believe in your religion. An apostate is someone who used to believe in your religion but doesn't anymore. Related term: a heretic is someone who believes in your religion, but is doing it wrong.
Watching this episode I had tears in my eyes, right as Daniel said "that's ridiculous", because I never had the chance to taste a whisk(e)y with my grandfather - which taste of whisk(e)y I've seemed to inherit. Thanks for this video guys
I would love to see the pipe episode you guys hinted at. I smoke a pipe regularly and would love to see you guys dive into to the history and etiquette of the dying tradition, and hopefully educate viewers on a classy, old fashion, and arguably better way to enjoy the subtle yet expansive medium to enjoy tobacco. Love your content, keep it up!
as a casual jock, I think this is not a bad introduction to whiskey. I think the idea that it's all subjective, but that you can taste it different ways, is a good call. xx
This is one of the best examples of whiskey tasting ever!! So many great channels out there, obviously Daniel & Rex's channels are dominating. I have green spot here and that walk through i was drinking at the same time as they were talking and could taste the coconut. unbelievable :)
I've recently started my apparent spiral into (Scotch) Whisky. Right now I have a Glenfiddich 18 and a 15, an Aberlour 12, and a Lagavulin 16 (that's a tough one to swallow). Loving these whisky videos.
yo Brian if you were a freshman in college and playing mtg that must have been like alpha and beta sets, basically what I'm saying is that can you hook me up with some power nine? lol
The best way to drink whiskey is however you like. Neat, on the rocks, with water, mixed or in cocktails. And with the people you enjoy being round. That's truly the best way
Don´t worry DOT, adults do the same thing. As long as you enjoy the moment (while getting your sh*t together in life), everything´s fine. No need to be an alcoholic with 13/14 but also no need to be a workaholic with 13/14 :)
2 Thumbs up to the whisky trainer (not sure his name), that was awesome how you explained how whisky breaks down as you taste it and why to use a certain glass and evaporation
Daniel is awesome, thank you for introducing me to his channels, "The Whiskey Vault" & "Whiskey Tribe". It's like drinking with old friends watching their shows. Love the Rouge of course too.
Well, you can still understand it as a wide-undertandeble appproach or metaphor to two different kinds of sensory perception - one which is detailed and analytical, and other that's integrative and wobbly. Yeah, it's not scientific at all in modern perspective, but most people still could have a very good idea of different perception modes through this.
...There is a whole lot of bro-science right through the video. Doesn't mean the video is bad, it's just all his scientifically phrased assertions should be treated with a few grains of salt.
Here I am a few weeks later drinking a Lagavulin 16 with a side of water feeling more interested in looking up where my drink was made and how instead of just downing it. Furthermore inevitably finding every definition of fortified wine and other terms that pop up I've never understood. This is a rabbit hole. To my pleasurable surprise, I notice Ron Swanson from Parks and Rec drinking this. Bonus!
I have found also that your environment and the ambient air also makes a big difference in how the whiskey smells/tastes. Next time you're enjoying your favorite whiskey at your house, have some inside, then step outside and have some and notice how it changes.

Loving the alcohol series. It's astonishingly hard to find videos like this that are both entertaining and teach something on the matter
Thanks, Dalton!
The banter between you guys would sit well in any good Irish pub.

Daniel is awesome, thank you for introducing me to his channels, "The Whiskey Vault" & "Whiskey Tribe". It's like drinking with old friends watching their shows. Love the Rouge of course too.
I study neuroscience. Left brain, right brain dichotomy is bunk. otherwise a great vid though.

Correct
...There is a whole lot of bro-science right through the video. Doesn't mean the video is bad, it's just all his scientifically phrased assertions should be treated with a few grains of salt.
Orcrist or a few grains of barley
I must say, I don't drink for personal reasons, but I found all 3 of these Whiskey episodes just fascinating.
I'm so glad to hear that... I've been so thrilled with how they came out!
1:23 talking about subjective realities.. thought he said Trump Cocktail XD
Ben Tzion Zuckier I think this is a perfect example of alternative facts xD
Ben Tzion Zuckier Trump Vodka :^)
Here I am a few weeks later drinking a Lagavulin 16 with a side of water feeling more interested in looking up where my drink was made and how instead of just downing it. Furthermore inevitably finding every definition of fortified wine and other terms that pop up I've never understood. This is a rabbit hole. To my pleasurable surprise, I notice Ron Swanson from Parks and Rec drinking this. Bonus!
This completely changed the way I drink and enjoy whiskey. Thank you so much!
Have NO IDEA why you guys don't have more than 3,000,000 subscribers.... These are GREAT!
thanks, man. help us spread the word?
I consider myself a fairly initiated whisk(e)y drinker, but you've managed to blow my mind at least a couple times! This video is well worth while!
glad to hear it!
I swear every time I’m going to be drinking whisk(e)y, I rewatch this video as a reminder. Must have seen it 20 times now!
I like this guy. He is knowledgeable but you can tell he doesn't put himself above others.
I have found also that your environment and the ambient air also makes a big difference in how the whiskey smells/tastes. Next time you're enjoying your favorite whiskey at your house, have some inside, then step outside and have some and notice how it changes.
This is an amazing show. It covers so many topics and makes me feel so elegant.
That toast at the end was beautiful. Almost brought a tear to my eye.
