    Hello fellow Zone enthusiasts! Let's watch the commercials. I know it is not the most exciting part of the show but it benefits our host and we all owe him that. It takes time, effort and dedication to deliver quality content pretty much daily. Nigel is doing this for us and we should pay him back...

    Hi Nigel, it's clear to see your bonsai collection is growing. I have had to face thinning the herd this year as I love to propagate. But this year of thinning has shown me that people are willing to pay for tree's that I propagate. A first for me after a couple decades of growing. I'm sure you are aware of your growing numbers and that you have not yet grown any more space for your trees. Do you have plans in the works or do you plan on crossing that bridge when you get there in the fall?

    Hi Nigel, i totally share your frustration at the pathetic roots. Ground layering would have been my solution for this tree.
    There is a huge ignorance/denialism about root pruning pots & air pruning in the bonsai community. The correct pots are the no.1 solution. Manual root pruning by bonsai nursery is no.2 solution.
    Many regular tree nurseries use air pruning pots now & are probably light years ahead of most bonsai nurseries, who still use pathetic regular plastic pots which give rise to root circling.
    I have covered this topic many times on my blog (linked from my vids) + there is a playlist called "How Pot Design Affects Your Plant's Growth". Link to it is in next comment (you might need to approve it).

    I have seen nursery stock comes with this small organic mesh very close to the base of the plant. I think it is there to either root it from cutting or grew it from seed but they never remove that and the roots start going around in circles very early and becomes what you got in the video later. A lot of big cuts on the roots in this one!

    So this was my first year repotting almost all of my trees this year after gaining the confidence from your videos Nigel and unfortunately my most expensive tree, a Chinese Juniper had roots like this and it cost me about £200! Surprisingly this was from Herons Bonsai so I expected more from his nursery to be honest. I've had to sort all the roots and up to now the tree is doing okay, it hasn't browned from the outside in so hopefully it's going to survive

    I just got my first Premna pre bonsai from Wigerts Nursery. It’s in great shape and came in a training pot. But it is sooooo root bound. I’m kind of dreading doing the root work because the whole root ball and soil are so compact it’s like a rock. I’m sure it’ll be fine, but I had a bad experience with a cotoneaster I got in a similar condition. The roots were just really tough to work on and the cotoneaster died :( Wish me luck!

    Hi Nigel,
    I was wondering why didn't you do a ground layer to this tree?
    That way you are not risking the health of the tree and you can get a nice and radial root base...
    If there is any specific reason I would love to know.
    Just wanted you to know that you have taught me most of what I know about bonsai, and I very appreciate that!

    • @TheBonsaiZone
      @TheBonsaiZone  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hello 8! I try and keep the original flare from the roots that I cut off. It makes a great transition from the trunk to the root base. Often with air layered trees, you get a circular ring where the trunk ends and the new air layered roots begin, It can take decades with some trees to loose this air layered look.

    something I have come across several times when buying nursery stock from bonsai nurseries is the maples I have bought have ended up having what I call 'finger roots', where the plant has what look like several tap roots that look like fingers, these grow in such a way that makes it impossible to put the tree in a conventional bonsai pot. I always find the best source for deciduous trees are the bare root trees you can buy in winter as these are generally field-grown and have much better bases. they're cheaper too!

    • @TheBonsaiZone
      @TheBonsaiZone  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Brazilian Rain Trees should be repotted in early summer. Often people will defoliate the tree, prune it and repot at the same time. Jaboticaba can also be repotted early summer. Pyracantha like a cool period in winter and should be repotted in spring just before the buds resume activity.

    I really agree with you Nigel, I also experienced that Prebonsai Material usually has bad roots ! The trunk and the upper part looks pretty good but the roots usually are unmanaged. And this is even the case with pretty expensive material. That’s really annoying.

    • @TheBonsaiZone
      @TheBonsaiZone  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes I agree, even if they quickly saw off the lower part of the roots before up potting, the roots would be much better!
      I don't think it's the lack of time, it's just laziness, they know the tree will sell to the beginner, no matter what the root system is like.

    • @patrickfo967
      @patrickfo967 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I couldn’t agree more… I bought 2 prebonsai this year they were on sale for 120€ each. A cork bark oak and a crabapple, Both trees had horrible roots. The corkbark oak didn’t make it, the crabapple had literally a ball of roots. After the rootpruning it was just the bare trunk with massive cutpoints. I was so disappointed. The crabapple made it through and is growing with vigor.
      That’s why I prefer to buy nursery trees and cut them down. Usually the rootsystem ist better and you pay much less so you can take the risk.
      Usually Prebonsai material is buried too deep in small pots and that’s how these horrible roots happen. I even talked with a guy in a bonsai nursery about it. He said they don’t bother to repot it until the trunk is thick. And he asked if I know how to airlayer. That’s their plan of action develop the top an airlayer the bottom.
      I said well I don’t like prefect root systems I like character and roots which are in scale to the trunk.

  • @paulschaefer5241
    @paulschaefer5241 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    You talk about how the roots are allowed to curl around inside the pot. I once got a mugo pine at a nursery. The tree was in a 1 gallon can when I got it but as I sorted out the roots I was able to tell that the plant had originally been grown in a 4 inch square pot. The condition of the roots is how I knew this.

    • @TheBonsaiZone
      @TheBonsaiZone  2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hey Nigel! I have been flirting with the idea of starting a pre-bonsai nursery since I have gotten into bonsai. I find the growing aspect the most fascinating. I am currently in the process of seeing how different soil substrates effect the growth of roots in my climate utilizing Paulownia tomentosa due to their quick growth. My eventual goal is to offer pre-bonsai to my local area (Western Washington and Oregon area) that is of better quality then what I have seen myself. I think I would be mostly focusing on ensuring a decent root base with my trees.
    As someone with plenty of years of experience, do you have any tricks you have learned for developing decent roots on trees grown from seeds? It seems like information on growing trees with the goal to make them into bonsai is hard to come by.
    Fun Fact: I gathered Boabab seeds from the same tree that yours came from when I was in Hawaii. I have three 6 month old boababs with many more seeds.

    I am at a point in my bonsai journey where I had previously acquired and cultivated as many trees, saplings and seedlings as I could get hold of, but now running out of space and beginning to ruthlessly assess which have any real chance of making quality bonsai. Sad to say that anything that just does not make the grade and has no realistic promise has gone to the great compost heap in the sky. I have proven to myself that I can grow, cultivate and keep plants alive, and gained some familiarity with elementary bonsai and horticulture techniques.
    Now to focus on quality and refinement rather than volume and “training material”.

    It's alwas disappointing to see such a neglected root system that just curls around. I also had such a root system on a Japanese cherry I bought in a garden center. Unfortunately, after showing some signs of life after repotting, any new leaf that came out was eaten by snails or something and then that was it... Nigel The Brave... you surely cut these roots a lot. But they sure look like they will grow and recover. The original roots looked like pile of shit.... I think his is the word you were looking for during your commentary ;)

      Nigel, is the Ontario Green Party similar in policy position to the National Green Party here in the US?
      Looking forward to your next updates on the Osage Orange forest. I grew a bunch from seed and like them a lot.

      @@orionm.2500 Yes, the Green party is founded on the same 6 principles, but the Ontario party has a specific platform for this province.
