This gives you actionable steps to practice and points out that you actually have to put in the practice to get better.

Those Cambridge Grammar Books are definitely top notch. We were encouraged to use them in TEFL classes while I was teaching, and students would find the exercises and grammar explanations very helpful.

Wow. That sounds a lot like what I did to learn English, too. Only I did it when I was a kid because I couldn't understand my videogames, lol. I would also sit trying to play Final Fantasy VIII, a JRPG of all things, with a dictionary next to me. It took me _forever_ to get through that game trying to understand ALL the dialogues. When I was done, though, I had gone from being the worst at English class at school to finding the class excruciatingly boring because there was nothing they could teach me, haha.
Now I'm trying to improve my French due to college and would really love to learn Japanese someday, but I don't have as strong a motivation for French at all, and don't even know the basics of Japanese to start practicing with. :/
I just wanted to say that those Grammar in Use books are amazing and I use them all the time as a teacher, both as a source of exercises for my students and a reminder for myself when I can't remember a certain grammar point! Teacher approved ;D

I'm currently studying japanese in Kyoto and got really surprised since the first example sentance you use (this is a pen) is exactly what we had to say in japanese the first week, haha! Also the teacher, who doesn't speak very good english, pointed at (for example) me saying "anata", pointing to himself saying "watashi" and made me repeat it until I understood what I was saying. Learning new languages is awesome.
And oh, I've been here for 5months now and I'm now able to have a pretty decent (well, she understands me..) conversation with my neighbor. I'm so happy I came here.

I was really surprised because what he has gone through was very similar to what I have gone through... Also, what he has done to learn how to speak English was very similar to what I've done. I agree with him on most of things he said and his English is pretty good and I speak pretty fluent English myself that most of English speakers mistake me for a native speaker. Anyways, what I'm saying is he is right! He's definitely got the right idea of how to learn to speak English!! Thank you Jun for the awesome videos!

Jun, you asked in episode 2 of "How I leaned English" why english verbs may change the way they do, or not seem to follow the "standard" rules of english. I'll admit, although being a native english speaker, english verbs especially can be very confusing. Actually, a lot of native english speakers seem to have trouble with english very use and some of the more complex forms are slowly breaking down and becoming more regular. Even so, there are many verbs which do not conform. If you're interested, here is why:
The first and most important thing to realize about the english language is that it has been influenced substantially, throughout its history, by several other languages. English is, originally a "Germanic" language, meaning it belong to a certain family of languages that have certain similarities to german. Without getting into too much detail, there are, additionally, sub-families of the Germanic language. English was a part of the western sub-family. However, throughout its history, English has been influenced by: Old Norse (part of the northern Germanic sub-family), Latin, and French. While many languages have been influenced by nearby languages, english adopted a LOT from these three languages--to the point that even very basic grammar (let alone vocabulary) was altered. One of the reasons english is so confusing is simply because it is something of a "mish-mash," a "hodge-podge," a jumble (basically just a big mess) of several languages.
The second reason why english verb are particularly confusing is because english has two different verb systems. This is actually something most english speakers have probably never heard of. In english there are "strong" and "weak" verbs. Weak verbs are the most common and follow in the "normal/standard" verb pattern (i.e. follow, followed, followed), but strong verbs have a different pattern; in fact, strong verbs seem to have several patterns. (This is where my knowledge of strong verbs begins to break down--even as someone who has studied this, I am still confused... haha.) Read (read, read, read) is an example of one type of strong verb, swim (swim, swam, swum) is another. The primary difference of strong verbs is that the vowel will change, not the ending of the verb. So unlike in a weak verb where the root word (follow) remains the same but a past tense ending is added (-ed), the vowel of a strong verb will change. (This applies even in read, read, read, where the sound changes, if not the spelling.)
There is some good news for those who are not native speakers (although, I find it a little sad), and that is: most strong verbs are being changed into weak verbs. When english was 'young,' strong verbs and weak verbs were roughly equal in number. However, through the years, when a new verb was adapted (usually from French or Latin) or made up (english used to make more component words) it was almost always made a weak verb. In addition, many strong verbs have, for lack of use, been converted to weak verbs. Now there are many more weak verbs than strong verbs. The strong verbs which have remained have only done so because of frequency of use (verbs like: swim, sing, read, etc.), although even some of these are facing conversion to weak verbs.
Well, I hope this was interesting and maybe you learned something, and maybe you even took the time to read something so long and technical, haha. I really like your videos and I hope you continue to make more!

EXCELLENT video, Jun!!! I know this video is for Japanese whom are learning to speak English, but I found it interesting that this method is "similar" to how I've been teaching myself to learn Japanese for a few years now. I'm horribly slow at speaking and reading Japanese. I feel embarrassed every time I try to speak it as I know what I want to say, but my mind hasn't learned how to form the sentence structure and grammar at that speed yet and leaves me at a loss every time. Even worse is that I'm at the highest level of English education (i.e. I read 1,000-page books in 2-3 hours; I write standard operating procedures for international enterprises/corporations to follow, etc). This seems to make my learning experience worse as I feel "incompetent" when I cannot hold the high-level precise communication that I wish to share. I was wondering if you had any suggestions for books similar to the three you mentioned for Japanese instead of English? The best I could come up with on my own is to go to Japantown's bookstore and study books for 5-year-old Japanese children. This is always embarrassing sitting on the floor in that aisle (considering my age) and I don't feel I'm learning to read properly. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

These are so useful. A lot of my foreign friends struggle with English, so I'm definitely recommending this video to them.
Also, if I may offer a suggestion as well, you can also listen to audio while you're doing mundane things like homework or cleaning. When I was learning German, I set the German news or German-dubbed sitcoms/cartoons in the background. This way, you're ears will process things more quickly, and you'll get used to hearing whatever language it is you're learning.

in 5th grade I got an F in my english class because it didn't interest me enough. Then I found out about the Internet and realized that english can be pretty usefull (for online games ). I've been studying Japanese for two years, and I do great in my tests for school, but making my own sentences, especially when speaking, is still a struggle. I know all the grammar when I see it, but I can't seem to use it when I actually need it. I will definitely try your tips.

*Is it just me or does Jun's story about how he started learning English sound like an anime?*
Just bear with me here:
He goes to study English, but ends up being the only one who can't speak English in a class filled with people who speak English really well. He almost decides to quit during the entrance ceremony speech (such a classic anime setting). He then suffers a humiliating defeat in a debate where he couldn't even utter a word and makes an 'enemy' (the kikokushijo) in the process.
He goes to the library to think of how to improve his English and sees someone who looks familiar. Only for it to turn out to be an award (English related) winning sempai who, contrary to his image now, also had a hard time with English when he first started, just like Jun! The sempai helps Jun out and Jun sets out to get his revenge and beat a kikokushijo in a debate within 3 months.
He works hard, step by step leaning to speak English, improving a bit every month. Eventually his hard work pays off and he succeeds in winning a debate against his nemesis!
(In the next 100 chapters he encounters an American model and ends up marrying her, eventually they start a TH-cam channel where he sometimes makes videos where he helps other people learn English, all because he persevered in learning English himself!)
The End
I admit I added a bit of drama with the 'enemy' and 'nemesis' business, and perhaps they would have married if he couldn't speak English at all, but doesn't it sound like the storyline of an anime?! :p

It would require the writer(s) to have a decent grasp of English, as well as having voice actors who don't mess up the English, too much, for most characters ...and some who speak fluent English (the kikokushijos).
You'd be hard pressed to manage that, I'd think.
Given how "well" English is usually spoken, when you hear it in anime ...and "good" the grammar is...

I quickly found that one of the *many* benefits of watching anime with subtitles, rather than dubbed (dubs suck ...unless it's a parody dub), is hearing Japanese people's (rather poor) attempts at speaking English ...not to mention their attempts at other languages.

I remember when I watched "Martian Successor Nadesico". In the first episode, the opening theme played while stuff happened, so it was only in the second episode, with the normal opening, with subtitles for the song, that I noticed that it had English (or rather "English") in it.

Kanji aren't really words though... If you work on your reading ability more (not vocabulary or grammar, but reading), you'll be able to easily figure out which bits are things you don't know.
It takes a lot of work, but it's not particularly hard; the hard part is studying every day!

Never? It's commonly used that way in a quote from the bible. There are lots of translations and not all of them use the same words but here's an example I found on the net: "Therefore shall a man leave his father and his mother, and shall cleave unto his wife: and they shall be one flesh." from Genesis and I think at least one or two references in the New Testament as well.
I don't think cleave is the only word like this. I'm not sure but I think of the word 'fast' in this way too. You can run fast or you can hold fast. Well, the latter is more in the sense of fasten, but how can they, it?, be used so differently?
Ok, curiosity made me search. They are called contronyms and there are lists.

+Renoa Heartilly Hi Renoa, as an ESL teacher I can tell you English is much more complicated that learning what a word means. English has a lot more tenses than other languages and can confuse many non-native speaker. The difference between "I've visited Paris" and "I visited Paris" can confuse a lot of non-native speakers but there is a difference in meaning.
Also, phrasal verbs, where the verb is altered by a preposition, can cause a lot of confusion. Ex. eat vs eat in vs eat out vs eat away vs eat up -- In each case it's the same word but the preposition changes the meaning of the word.
Lets not even get started on the massive headache of prepositional rules in English.

I used this "English Grammar in Use" in my high school in Japan, and I understand that it's good to study English using it.
However, I don't feel very comfortable with the word "beating the returnees". I personally think language is just a tool to communicate and get along with (of course, there could be a language major studies!) and not something to compete. I used to live in Australia, but no one told me, "my Japanese is better than yours!" when I came to Japan.
Obviously, it's good to tell people the way to improve, but I don't want to see the world where guys are using English
to beat someone...

I'm Dutch and I learned most of my english through dutch subtitled TV. You start out as a child and eventually without realising it you will know when the subtitles are getting things wrong. It's a very easy way to learn. We get English lessons in school too but just those never make you able to understand it as well as hearing it used so much as on tv.
I also watched BBC with the english subtitles on (teletex 888) to learn how the words were written while watching something fun.
In school you could really tell the difference between the kids who didn't watch tv and those that did, the first could just never really catch up. German tv dubs a lot of tv and movies so they also have a harder time learning English by example.

+Iflie So true! I had a hard time learning english in school, because I wasn't using it for anything but school (German TV is 100% dubbed not subbed, so you don't hear any english in everyday live).
Only once I finished school, did I get the hang of it, because that's when I started watching shows on the internet and obviously, most series and movies popular in Europe are produced originally in english. Also: the whole internet favours english, so I got a lot more motivated to learn, because now I had a purpose - I was actually using english in everyday live and my english has gotten so much better since then!
Talking or communicating with other people when the only language you've got in common is english, is the best practice you can get, because you simply can't cheat... ^_~

+Iflie Same hereeeeee and also a lot of games were and are still in english. Nowadays they do dub more here then they used to. Even Mariokart (regenboogweg/rainbow road wtf?!) I do remember growing up the cartoons were also in English with sub but now its all dub when i see flashes. How annoying.. Anyway oddly enough by watching BBC i tend to pick UK words over US but i say them with an american accent :)

+Jemima1377 Yes, I think Jun talked about motivation in his other video too. Much later than school I started messaging with people in English. You have to think fast to keep up a conversational speed so that also really helped me formulate things in English.
Plus they were a lot better at spelling than I was and would correct me. Sometimes people OL are reluctant to do that but I didn't take it as an insult. I welcomed it.
The last one is really true and useful, you can also talk to your friends with English too, without worrying of the grammar and stuffs. Just say whatever you want! Like "I go buy food", "Why yesterday no come?", "How you lie the teacher?" it sounds stupid and broken English but this is what you have to do to speak more.

Listening to this without subtitles is so much harder than watching anime without subs. Damn. But it was "doable", I guess. Perhaps the wrong place to ask, but is there some Japanse tv program / TH-camr which would be good for someone to improve their Japanese listening with? Thought my might have a clue (hard to find stuff with my limited kanji-knowledge).

I'm french and I like to share the way I improved my grammar and vocabulary, it's by reading some mangas in english as it talked about daily life and interactions between people. At first, I read it with my little dictionnary and soon it was more fluent, it worked very well for me !
Now I maintain my level by watching videos in english, sometimes with subtitles to strenghten my learning, I read texts in blogs or so regardless if it's in english or french.
Jun always looks so handsome in this kind of videos.

Hi Jun, thank you for your hard. I wouldn't mind buying one of those books considering that I need to improve my writing before enrolling in school again; in fact, most native English speakers need grammar lessons.

thank you so much for making this video I am having a similar experience with french where the entire class is taught in french and I just don't know it that well. I will definitely try these methods
