    I love how they were not straight up insulting American stylized food like many others tend to do. Though its always important to take into thought the background and importance of certain dishes that you know came from other cultures (which America should do more, beyond the point), i do like how they gave mature responses beyond “its trashy and americanized”. They gave points of the differences and flavors and thats such an important thing we need to do more. Great work :).

      Anne im not saying other countries dont do it it, we are just notorious for it. Also, im just saying its still good to understand the culture behind certain foods and where they came from. Though most wont bother, there are people out there that do care about other cultural foods and simply like to see what they can make out of them.

    Not really pertaining to the main aspect of the video, but I always love how bilingual people randomly switch between languages in conversation with each other. I only speak English myself, but I grew up with a lot of Hispanic friends, and whenever I went to their houses everyone would talk in a mix of Spanish and English and I always thought that was super cool.

    • @Nijidesu
      @Nijidesu 8 ปีที่แล้ว +80

      Language switching is very common here in my country :) Pretty much everyone does it (Majority of us are at least bilingual) and there would be like at least 2 languages in each sentence haha. Since I'm fluent in English and Chinese and I'm learning Japanese(main) and Korean... Things can get a little confusing whenever I speak to someone, lol.

    • @sombraelerizo

      Sombraelerizo But it can be really annoying for people who doesn't understand the language that you switch too suddenly. Like, the main language here is English so I don't have to worry about that. But people's mother tongue is different. There's Chinese, Malay, Indian, etc and people who doesn't speak any of them will be like "Wth are you saying... Translate?" and I'll be like opps sorry lol

      Also, the fried sushi is on the menu but I never order it, lol. I guess a lot of people do, since they keep making it, but I never notice it that much! I'm going to try to pay more attention in the restaurants now... but at least when it's at a supermarket, it isn't usually fried.

    • @milofinn1910
      @milofinn1910 7 ปีที่แล้ว +18

      i think its less popular than the rolls because its so expensive compared to them (though i live in canada, not the usa so i don't know how what it's like down there). for $5 in the restaurant i usually go to you can either get 8pcs of a roll or 2pcs of nigiri

    • @jmiquelmb
      @jmiquelmb 7 ปีที่แล้ว +18

      Probably because it's much easier to disguise the poor quality of the food on a roll. Of course, if you add cream cheese and stuff you can use the cheapest, most mediocre salmon you find. Nobody will notice. You can't do that with nigiri. The same happens with pizza

    • @BlueHazyDreams
      @BlueHazyDreams 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It does seem to be less popular, but because I usually go to specifically sushi restaurants when I want sushi, I've never been to a place like that that doesn't have nigiri. I've been to many a fusion restaurant with only maki, of course.

    • @C_Naka
      @C_Naka 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      ***** That's interesting! Well that makes sense for coastal states, it's the same with California. There is a lot of fresh seafood here too but that doesn't stop people from frying it (lol). A lot of strange experimental things happen here with food. In terms of sushi restaurants, most of the rolls tend not to be completely fried but there are usually a few options that are.

    A lot of people say that's Americans butchering a culture, but I think it's nice. How American culture is essentially a melting pot of a bunch of other cultures shifted and influenced by each other to create new things that...aren't entirely new. It's cool. And as someone who has always been broke, I kinda like how we create cheaper tasty versions of things, because really fancy fresh sushi would never be in my price range, but the occasional California rolls will. Culture clashing!! It's lit

    • @zachanikwano
      @zachanikwano 6 ปีที่แล้ว +22

      Right, though? When I was younger I thought cultural appropriation was the worst thing ever. In certain cases today, I still sort of do -- but with things like food, art, literary works, and celebrations? Heck no, man. The mixing of culture is one of the greatest things about humanity that I believe brings us all together.
      Culture in general is ever-changing. Especially with the internet -- we inspire one another, and even adopt and change customs from all sorts of places worldwide (ie, what you said).
      I love the variety and uniqueness of all the cultures around the world, but I also love the things they make when they come together. It's beautiful thing.

    • @vixxcelacea2778
      @vixxcelacea2778 6 ปีที่แล้ว +26

      Almost every culture in existence is taken from another one before it, generally native cultures mix with an invading one.
      I see absolutely nothing wrong with any adaptation. I think cultural appropriation is a catch all term people use to exclude others, generally attacking someones race if it doesn't fit with a stereotypical cultural narrative. Total BS in my opinion. In fact, I think it helps cultures thrive and not die out to share and let them morph as they will.

      I consider it Californian Fusion, it uses ingredients that Californians are used to (like Avocado) with ingredients that people may be a little hesitant to try out (raw salmon, tuna, squid... octopus... etc.) Like, I am just fine eating Sashimi or Nagiri while dipping only a little bit of soy sauce (or none if the subtle flavor is there,) but a few of my family stay far far away from anything raw. Frying the fish into tempura, makes it palatable for them while still enjoying Japanese culture. (much like how Japanese curry was made to be more palatable to Japan... even though it's very different from Thai and Indian Curry.)
      Chen Kenichi, who is popular in Japan, creates Szechuan style food that is more palatable to Japanese tastes (a lot of the real Szechuan food will make you sweat the more you eat)

    Very entertaining video.
    Sushi today is just like pizza: it is an universal food. As pizza, it gained different versions, flavors and recipes around the world that meets every country´s tastes.
    Of course the traditional japanese recipes and style of sushi are always delicious, but it doesn´t mean that other types of sushi are not good. Sushi recipes evolved in many ways and got many different influences on the hands of creative chefs around the world so it finally could became popular.
    Otherwise, I don´t think sushi would be such universal acclaimed and popular food.

      I think every country have their own version of sushi because they want it to be tasty for the local people. And also ingredients are different. I live in Cracow, so it is a little bit difficult to get a fresh fish in here, so of course that our sushi is not as good as sushi in Japan. But I'm more curious if recipes are similar.

      I never get rolls with cream cheese. idk I used to like it, but I just don't anymore. I definitely prefer the ones with good fish too and not just imitation crab. All depends on the restaurant. I will say, that spicy mayo + eel sauce combo is sooo good.

      I don't know if you've checked a map lately but America is kinda big. While we have two lovely coasts to catch crabs from and a wonderful shipping and delivery infrastructure it would still be ungodly expensive, especially out of season, to move tons and tons of crab all over the place for the purposes of stuff like sushi. When you're on either coast you'll find fresh seafood restaurants up and down and likewise any sushi place that sets up shop is probably using real crab over imitation but there are well over 150 million people who don't live on the coasts and still want sushi without paying god knows how much for real crab to get packed up and sent over on a daily basis so they settle for imitation crab.
      Just the way it goes if you're not on the coast. It's expensive to acquire fresh seafood in some parts of the country.
