    Ive been using a new file on each client for the last year and the state that I live now require to toss and not sanitize/disinfect ... it does make a nice improvement and clients do notice when you toss the stuff away in front of them ... loving these lessons tutorials that you are doing think it helps new techs and the old timers per say lol

    WOW, I am so grateful to you for sharing this important information! I am a nail technology student and I needed help with learning about the grit number & textures, and which sides should be used on natural or enhanced nails. Also, how to PROPERLY hold the file. You shared far more than what I understood, omg, it is SOOO HELPFUL!!! THANK YOU SOOO MUCH. I even appreciate the advice you gave about including the files into the cost of a service as a result of excellent qualities nails. When I gain customers I want them to feel valued and very well taken care of and healthy. I feel sooo much more confident now to use hand files. I cannot thank you enough, this blew my mind. God bless you. You've gained a new subbie!

    Oh man... I am so thankful for TH-cam, I literally can’t think of anything better than having Celina teaching you cool gel aplication techniques and designs AND have Liz teach you everything there is out there to be known about quality in your services and how to bring them to a new level or how to really make that business work and bring it to the top ALL IN ONE PLACE.
    That being said... thank you SO MUCH Liz for taking the time to do this and putting all your knowledge out there for people all around the globe.

    Well you never seize to amaze me with your teaching skills.I can listen to you for an hour without feeling blank.I am super proud to say I knew mostly all the tips except for the part where you said wrongly filing can damage the shape or structure from underneath the nail .I notice now I did that a bit at times without realising.From now on I will be more aware.Thank you.I appreciate your wonderful service. I look forward to many more lessons. One can never stop learning in this world.

    When filing the natural nails, I’ve heard some conflicting information from TH-camrs that aren’t professionals. Do you need to file in a single direction or file toward the middle of the nail to prevent fraying? Also, what are the opinions on ceramic and glass files for natural nails?

    • @gretchen585ify

      Aslynn Wetzel: not all glass files are equal. Use etched crystal like Germanikure. They are a game changer. Most are sprayed with sand and extremely poor quality. Germanikure will last you for life if you don't drop them.

    You just helped me figure out why I broke a nail this week lol. I have natural long nails and have been trying to shape them into the coffin shape and created notches on the sides of some of them. I had gone too far on the side where the break happened and weakened it. Hey I watched the nail brush video you did and loved it! I did nails in the 90's for over 15 years and even then no one knew how to file by hand and that was before all the efiles hit the market!!! I happened to excel in filing and it's what kept my books full! Thanks for the video! You do a great video.

  • @michellercrouse

    the variability in the abrasion from nail files of the same grit is a notable consideration, and indeed a factor would be the brand or manufacturer. I regard the color of the nail file abrasive as a significant aspect of the implementation of a particular filing method.
    The color (e.g. white, black, gray/zebra) is actually a property of the abrasive material on the nail file, and thus an indication, typically, of the hardness and durability.
    I'm pleased about your weekly videos. I can credit you with engraining some concepts in me over the past years, from your channel and podcast. I now use my metal implement on the edges of new files, rather than a less durable, bulky cushion nail file. Thanks for the knowledge.

    1. Grit : texture on filer or buffer
    2. Disinctible :
    3. Emery board
    Files :
    Thinner called emery board. Made of wood. One time use. Used to reach tight areas as they are thin.
    Spongy foarmy material. More flexible. Netween buffer and emery board.
    Moon file: same as spongy one.
    Better to do curve surfaces around cuticle areas.
    Diamond files : same amery board but thicker.
    Buffer :
    Block buffer and etc.
    180 is standard grit number.

  • @cameliabadescu5689
    @cameliabadescu5689 5 ปีที่แล้ว +8

    I'm gonna leave this here so maybe it'll help with understanding grits
    Think you have the same surface and on one you have to lay 100 rocks one next to the other and then you have to lay 180 rocks one next to the other
    So thinking about it will there be smaller rocks in the first or the second situation? Of course on the second so that means the grit will be finer
    And in the situation with 100 rocks (the 100 grit) it will be coarser/grittier

    I do agree to use a new file for each service but why are clients so reluctant to pay the right value of a service? I tend to see that people do want gorgeous nails but they're not willing to pay the right price.. and files are not that cheap in the end..

    • @TheNailHub
      @TheNailHub  6 ปีที่แล้ว +24

      Throwing away a nail file maybe costs $0.85/service so it shouldn't drastically effect your overall service price. I will be doing some pricing videos soon. :)

    • @shirleybridge7027
      @shirleybridge7027 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Your so right about reluctant clients . But once your clients dont question your pricing I find. Those are the clients that appreciate a good quality set of nails. Those gaggles are always looking for a bargain. Education in this field is not cheap nor is the passion we instill in our work . Stay positive. Our work speaks for our education and quality of service we give.
      ...Remember theres always room for improvement in nails hust as Liz shows us in everyone of her videos. Love her to peace.

      My regular, and favorite manicurust of all time, (I moved to another state and had to stop going to her😔) had each client purchase a kit that was kept at the salon, with our names on the case, and in a locker. I Loved knowing that my nippers, files, etc hadn't been used on other clients, and were safe. She even disinfected them, and returned them to our cases, while we were still in the salon drying our nails. We just paid for replacements as needed. I think that all salons should implement this way of handling tools, if their clientele is that which would support the initial investment. Try that.

    • @kawannahardy2924
      @kawannahardy2924 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@shirleybridge7027 Agreed. Getting services done that include sharp objects that can injure you, or other tools that may pass disease, are Definitely not the place to be cheap and/or skimp on safety. THAT I'll pay for!

      @lovemesomeslippers 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      there are files with sanitizable bases and replaceable abrasives! Hard to find though. I've seen stainless steel bases/handles. Theres different abrasive levels and thickness, so you can stick on the thinnest one to get close to the sidewalls or a spongey thicker one to not hurt a client. some even sell buffers that stick on. I think they might cut down on waste over the long run

  • @amandah2866
    @amandah2866 5 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    Well, no wonder I've been cutting my side wall when filing my nails! I now know for my next new file. I also wondered why I was getting those notches on my natural nails, so now I know. This was a really helpful video! Files are more complicated than I ever imagined. You didn't cover what a Zebra file is though, and I see that mentioned a lot on nail supply websites.
    Just as a little FYI, the moon shape is widely called the harbour bridge shape in Australia (they have the same shape as Sydeny Harbour Bridge). I buy all my files from Aussie shops so I honestly didn't know it was called the moon shape.

    I’ve been using a fileboard with disposable file grits, they now even have disposable buffers for the boards. Plus because they are stainless steel they are so easy to disinfect and the boards themselves are very inexpensive and the “files” come in packs of 50-100. They do also come in different shapes moon, pill, boomerang, and rectangle.

Guilty of those notches and I can see now the correct position for sidewalls. I’d love to see how you file different shapes. The one I struggle with mostly is almond shape. Can’t wait for the brush video too. I’m wondering how to maintain the brushes that use alcohol as a slip solution for polygels from drying out.

    You look so much like Jo from Grey's Anatomy. It's crazy. Thank you so much for the tutorials. I've been diy'ing my nails, but they are soft and flat, and I'm struggling with lifting. I never have to soak them off because they just pop off after a few days, sometimes less. I have watched so many videos that I think have maybe given bad info, and I love you're explaining why you should and shouldn't do certain things. I have also been using Sally products, and I'm thinking maybe it's not the best option for my nails. Interestingly enough, their prep is blue, also. It says it's just alcohol and blue coloring. Why would they do that? So I'm going to try some of your products you recommended.

    Dear Liz, I've just watched your videos on the basics of gel application. Thank you so much, I am new to the nail industry and with lockdown being the reality right now, attending a nail school is not an option. Your lesson was very specific and super informative! Would you have any interest in putting together a lesson about the basics and best practices for creating press on nails? With my limited knowledge, I can already imagine that there will be a few differences between gel application on real nails vs full cover tips. All the best!

    You are a godsend for people like me who are trying to do learn on our own at home, thank you sooooo much. Would you please do a video on how to deal with the lifting around the cuticle and sidewalls that happen just from pressure over the weeks on the ends of a long nail? That area is so thin and close to the natural nail, I am scared to accidentally file my nail while trying to get rid of lifting. Also, I feel like as I try to file the tiny bits of lifting down in actually creating more lifting from the filing movements? I can see it’s much easier with an efile but I can’t afford one yet. Thank you soooooo much 🙏🏼

      Hi! If you file before the lifting and not on the lifting it will gradually blend the product and the lifting will fall off without accidentally filing the natural nail or making the lifting worse.

    Thank you for your amazing tutorials, they have really helped me a lot! I have been doing nails since April of this year and I battle with tip application, blending & shaping. Please may you do an in-depth tutorial about how to apply a nail tip, blend it and shape it? That would be so great and help me SO MUCH! Thank you LIz!

    I am only using nail files on myself. How do i know when to throw it away? I have a couple that are washable. So I washed them. They don't seem to be as good any more. I also have one that I can see brown in it. It still is usable but when do i know to throw it out?
    Is there something else I can use to take my Polygel off my nails besides Acstone? This stuff if ruining my nails.
    I love that you are teaching us some much with your videos, thank you so much Liz!!

    Your information about nail files has been extremely helpful and informative. As a DIY’er, is it safe to re-use nail files on myself? If so, how many re-uses before tossing? I understand cleanliness and not using a dull file, but I also don’t want to be wasteful with my hobby. Thanks!

    I’ve filed from underneath and it never occurred to me why I was getting that ridge.
    I thought maybe I didn’t put enough product on the side, especially with poly gel forms, but it was actually my filing that it created it.

    For doing your own nails, do you have any thoughts on metal or glass nail files? My nails tend to be on the weaker side & I've seen many people who use regular polish talk about how gentle they are but I want to know if they could be harmful? I've noticed that none of them seem to have any changes on whether my nails split or the amount of hangnails I get, but maybe I'm also just filing wrong?

    I taught at beauty school & owned shop 20 yrs ago but sold it since I couldn’t handle too many clients & didn’t make enough for a living. Lately I was asked to work in a vietnamese shop as I’m still having license to discover how they really operates. Many technicians have no license even they can do a good job. Clients only see the colors but not the hygiene. They trained their own technicians & live their way.

    I discovered your channel through your collaboration with Nail Career Education, and first I would like to thank you so much for all the information you put on your youtube channel. I'm by no means a professionnal and am caring / polishing only my own nails, but I'm very interested on how all this works, how products or nail files affect our nails etc
    On the subject of the video, and with your opinion on throwing away nail files after each service, I would like to ask your opinion on Crystal / Glass nail files, but maybe more for a personnal use (I know Nail Career Education gave her opinion saying she doesn't often use them, except in some very specific scenarios) ? Do you like them or not ? Do you think they are a good recommendation for personnal use or not ?
    Thank you for the time you put into your videos !

    • @TheNailHub
      @TheNailHub  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Abby. Thanks! For salon use crystal and glass files can be a backup option, but for personal use they are great. They can also be sanitized properly and are a great option for natural nails.

    What do you recommend for natural nails that peel at the tip? I feel like sometimes it’s caused because of the nail filer. Is there a nail filer that can be used to prevent the snagging and peeling?

    I was hoping you would touch on the type of file that is stainless with the replaceable grit stickers. And also metal diamond files.

    • @TheNailHub
      @TheNailHub  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Not a fan of the replaceable sticker files. They have very sharp edges that are hard to remove and they are awkward due to the plastic or metal core they are made of. They could be used for pedis or natural nail care but for enhancements I do not like them. Same goes for metal. Good for natural nails or pedis, but for filing on gel or acrylic they don't have enough flexibility and the grit is too flat.

    Great video 💜. When I started practicing enhancements on my self last year I was guilty of unknowingly making notches in some of my nails. It was from a previous video of yours last year that I realized what I was doing! Now I'm practicing on family while going to school. I'm going to start turning the hand and doing the filing routine you went over. My questions are. Can you go over what grits to use on hard gel and acrylic. I like using 100/180 grit moon files on my hard gel. Is this too harsh? And what progression of grit files should you do. If you do a 180 file what grit buffer should you use? And where do you recommend to buy files. I know a lot of ppl say EBay or Amazon. But I question the quality. Thank you once again Your the bomb!

    • @liveandletlive7152
      @liveandletlive7152 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Sarah C maybe I can help with a few stuff dear.For gels she said no less than 150 grit . 100 would be too harsh for gel.
      Actually think about it...if you are using the files only once then even if you find something on EBay that doesn't cost as much as the big brands but looks quite good then it's a good thing.Sometimes big companies just add their logo on the file and that's what you're paying for. I have used big brands and also files and buffers from Aliexpress and to be honest if you look at reviews first or you know how to spot quality you can't go wrong.You can find quality.I paid like 3.50 USD on Alliexpress for a pack of 10 180grit moon files.Give it a try:)

    • @TheNailHub
      @TheNailHub  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi Sarah 180 is perfect for gel and acrylic and I never buff afterwards because I need a gritty surface for my color or top coat to adhere to. Sounds like you're doing a great job with everything. There are lots of places to buy files. I personally like the Kokoist, Akzentz, and Light Elegance ones but you can also get them from beauty supplies. Ebay and Amazon are good too but they are usually more expensive than if you bought them in bulk from a reputable reseller.
