I'm so glad you showed us this! My mom used to get silk nails a long time ago, and since she stopped going to that salon I've never seen it done anywhere! I honestly thought I was crazy since I was so little when I was watching the nail tech. She had the sheets where she had to cut each individual nail out, but they always looked fabulous!

Suzie I’m so glad to see you use these, I’ve not had anyone ask for them for over 10yrs now, when I started my training in 1995 we were taught Gel, Acrylic, fibreglass & silk wrap, I thought they were the best looking nails of the 3 especially the shine after everything was complete, I’ve still got some packets of fibreglass & few packs of silk & the pre cut ones in my nail drawer, they aren’t any use now as the sticky part goes, I only use my fibreglass for broken nails now as they are great for fixing a broken nail then I carry on working with whatever the client requires over the top💅🏽💅🏽💅🏽

I also started hair and nails in the late '80s. Fiberglass had just come out and I had been using silk and acrylic for a couple of years before that. Doing silk extensions were super easy if you use a light sprinkle of nail powder between layers of silk and glue. The same with fiberglass. I found that of the wrap systems, silk was my favorite.
I was the first and only gel nail tech on Long Island in the late '90s when it first came out. That became my product of choice but I still used whatever medium my clients preferred.
I retired from salon work in 2001 but have always kept up my license and continuing education.
Thanks for your videos. I really enjoy them!

Great repair method. I started doing silk and fibreglass in 1997. The secret to doing a beautiful natural looking silk nail is get it close to the edges but not touching and fibreglass will hold with it away from the cuticle. Use a tip and only one layer of either glass or silk, it works like rebar, very strong. Creats beautiful natural thin nails. You need to use resin with the activated which is the smelly stuff and avoid breathing it in; don't lean nover it. It's toxic to the lining in sinuses with continued use. My partner experienced this. She did silk and glass for decades. I love your programs, so hard to find a tech who doesn't cut corners these days and I need one here in northern Canada. I'm retired now with worn out hands :-)

But instead of glue n activator, I use IBD gel resin and they last me up to 2 weeks....even with swatching polishes and doing all chores. I even sometimes have salvaged my completely broken apart nail using silk wraps.

hi suzie. i’m shay and i have a very important question to ask you... my prom is next saturday April 13th and i want my nails done. a little background about my nails... my natural nails are really long, strong and super pretty...but a couple days ago my thumb nail broke in half and i had to cut all my nails to the same length now they are really short and i want my nails long for prom cause this is my senior year..so what i’m trying to ask is what should i do for my nails to be long and pretty for prom but still keep my nails healthy so that i can wear my natural nails.
everyone, can you please like this for me so that suzie can see it and answer. thank you.
p.s. if any of you all have advice for me about what to do with my nails.. that would be really helpful.

    • @stepmothercity
      @stepmothercity 5 ปีที่แล้ว +6

Go get acrylics or gel from a reputable salon. If you wanna DIY, try the Kiss Dip Kit. It’s easy and lasts a good while, but may take a few hours to apply for beginners. You could do press or glue-ons, but long lengths are harder to find and you risk popping them off. Glue-ons are painful and damage your nail when they get knocked off too.

In the 90's my baby sitter got silk nail fill in every week. I used to love going with her after she picked me up from school. I'd get a manicure while she got her fill in. I remember them using that old fashioned acrylic fill in powder that you sprinkle out of a little tube to make it stronger. I remember when they started using gel products because they used the new uv lamps. I always wanted to use the fancy lamp, but thats a different story lol. I remember she ALWAYS made sure people knew that they were her REAL nails, just with wraps over them lol, as if that mattered. Anyway, she was the best and I miss her.

I used to do fiberglass nails alot in the 90s. I used Backscratchers was the brand. It was quite daunting starting a new system but I was young but I had about 10-15 customers that just loved them. Many of them started using fiber because they were trying to repair a broken nail and then eventually, all their nails were fiberglass. But instead of trying to create an extension with the fiberglass, and wasting fiberglass, I would just glue a tip on and put the fiberglass over the tip. My mother was one of those customers. She had issues with acrylic and allergies so we had to find another avenue. I actually loved doing the fiberglass. If you did it correctly you didn't have to worry about lifting, they were thinner, you could actually build the nail as well with the fiber. So they weren't flat looking if the customer's nail was flat. I still love fiberglass and I have very long, Natural Nails and when I have to do a repair, I use the fiberglass. You actually don't have to activate in between each glue layer. You can just put the glue on and then build the fiberglass, put the glue over the fiberglass, just make sure the glue seeps through all the layers of fiberglass and then spray at the end. That saves on activator and glue.

I trained in fibreglass 12 years ago. It is the weakest form of extension but the most natural looking. All you need is a tip and one layer of fabric and an extra bit over the stress area. Be careful you don't spray too close either as it can burn xx

This really would be a great option for people who want to maintain their natural nails as they grow out but they just aren’t strong enough on their own. When I was in Cosmo school, I played around with all kinds of techniques. I did a full set of fiberglass over a tip. It was a task!!! I made some mistakes but covered pretty good with polish. I do agree that if someone wanted to do these for real length and strength, a builder gel would be best. I often think o want to grow my nails out but I’m so impatient and revert right back to acrylic with tips.

i was always taught that you only need 1 layer of fiberglass and one stress peice at the end where the free edge starts to leave the nail plate. and that the reason you leave the space is because the fiberglass & resin expands when you use the activator. also if you use resin instead of just nail glue, its so solid as nail extensions. (just what i was taught)

The way i learned silk/fiberglass was to do one layer of resin, a stress strip across where the free edge meets the hyponichium, layer of resin, a silk/fiberglass strip, 3-4 layers of resin, finish with smoothing and buff to a shine or top coat. Never seen it layered this way but the ones we did in school were SO FRAGILE. I mean they cracked just by being in a bag with other practice nails. So maybe layering them would make them better, although it would take ages for a full set.

I've heard of silk and fiberglass wraps for damaged nails, but wasn't aware of tea bags and coffee filters for the same purpose. Maybe I should have tried that before trimming my peeling nails short :(

Thanks for the video! I always wondered about fiberglass nails. I have been interested in the Brazilian technique which uses fiberglass strands(?) and gel in place of the glue/resin.

How would one remove the fiber glass/silk sheets from the nail? I know you can use acetone/filing to remove acrylic from the nail plate, but if you file the fiber glass then the dust particles would be everywhere. Resulting in congestion of the particles.

Instead of multiple layers of fiber. Try using 2 layers of glue, activator, buff, leave dust, then repeat. Use the glue to add apex, buff, leave dust and do 2 overall layers of glue to finish.

I have very curved and used the glue, activator, and silk, and it pulled my nail flat. It was rather painful, I went back to patching with my own acrylic mixture, and now switch that off with 123 nails from Max Estrada.

If you like your nails shorter but they are prone to breakage, is acrylic or gel a good idea? All the lumps amd bumps get on my nerves, too. I hear as you age, you get ridges and bumps. And my hands are euper small. I used to be a nail biter so I have to live with the nails I have.

When I was in school we learned how to use these. Typically you use a tip and only one piece of fiberglass. Then you had to spray the glue and activator repeatedly until strong. I used to get them myself because they were the closest thing to my natural nail.

I learned this in nail tech school in 1994 using linen wraps. I can probably still do a better linen extension than acrylic extension. Haha!

Is fibreglass a good alternative for acrylics and gel? I'm allergic to both gel and acrylic and the itching I get from them is unbearable, but I love wearing and making nail extensions.. I really need to find an alternative I'm not allergic to!
