    In an iconic episode of Star Trek: The Original Series, "Who Mourns for Adonais?", we learn that the Greek gods were actually extraterrestrials who visited Earth some five thousand years ago. In this video, I examine the origins of the Olympian aliens, their residence on our planet, and how they fit in with other elements of the Trek universe.

    The ancient Greeks were the first scientists to study the universe. To this day we name celestial objects after figures in Greek mythology.

They would draw out their maps under water by using the refection of the stars on water. That's why in translation the stars and sky translated to "underworld".
      Most of the middle eastern paper records were moved to the library of Alexandria so thousands of years of records went up in a poof of smoke.

    The same sadness and sense of loss experienced by Apollo losing his followers can be experienced by mere mortals who leave work where they were greatly appreciated and needed and are now bereft of need or demand for assistance.
    Apollo could also be described as a parent that suddenly realises that his children have grown up and grown apart and no longer need him.

    Apollo is the God we know from myth. They may have visited other worlds before moving on to Earth. Apollo's line about The One with the Ears reminding him of Pan and Pan always boring him may be a direct reference to Vulcan. If I remember correctly Vulcan was going through the Surok reformation about that time.
    I have a theory that Flint may be partly to blame for the Eugenics War and World War 3. In Requiem For Methuselah Flint is trying to create the perfect mate for himself. Just as immortal, just as smart, just as strong as himself. He may have started trying to do so in the 1960s through gene manipulation. His research ended up in the wrong hands and was exploited by a group of ambitious scientists. Remember that Flint claimed to have twice the strength of Kirk. Kahn claimed he was 5 times stronger than Kirk. As for his part in starting World War 3 my thinking guess like this. Major governments were beginning to suspect his true nature. With modern advancements in computers and recording equipment and banking Flint was finding it harder to keep his secret. After his involvement in the Eugenics War it was even more difficult as entire nations were trying to root out war criminals. With the DY 100 class ships being a product of that war and able to reach near light speed Flint calculated that another war could 1) cause the erasure of much of the computer records of the world and 2) cause the development of FTL travel. So he gambled and won. The devastation of WW3 did erase much of his record and a few years after the world ended Warp Drive was developed. Now he had a means off the planet. He did give up on Eugenics and turned instead to cybernetics and renamed himself Soong. A few generations later and another "Doctor Soong" completed "Flint's" work. Flint/Soong finally created the perfect mate in Data's mother.

      The title derives from a poem by Byron eulogizing Shelley: "I weep for Adonais; he is dead..." and so on.
      This brings up a few questions:
      Did Byron mean for the name to be pronounced "A-do-NY-is" to fit the pentametric rhythm? Or
      Was he employing an archaic, pseudo-classical spelling of "Adonis?" Or
      Did he simply not know how to spell in the first place? Or
      Did he intend, as you suggest, for "Adonais" to be a plural of "Adonai?"
      These questions have been bugging me for fifty years...

    • @tunisiancrochetchannel
      @tunisiancrochetchannel ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The Hebrew God is a composite of the Gods of the area of the older religions. That's why the names are the same as those "pagan" Gods - El, Adonai, Shaddai, etc. Adonai is Adonis/Adon. They are different forms of the same name.

    You fail to take into account that there are some ancient Greek texts which are much older than the Theogony of Hessiod and the Iliad and Odyssey of Homer who is considered as a poet almost contemporary to Hessiod. Thus , while you are very close to uncover a well disguised historical truth , you fall again into the same trap , e.g. 1). that the Trojan war started around 1200 b.C. ( actually it was a much older event) , and 2). that the Ancient Greek Gods were only those mentioned in Homer's and Hessiod's texts , written between 1000 b.C. and 800 b.C.
    Actually Hessiod included in his Theogony a lot of lies concerning the lineage and the true nature of several Greek gods , becouse he was paid to do so by the priesthood of the expanding cult of Zeus. He needed the money becouse his elder brother usurped all parental inheritance and he has sued his brother and confronted him in some local juries in his hometown of Accra in Boiotia , Greece. Eventually he lost all cases and claimed that his brother has bribed the judges. The fact is also that within his hometown nobody of his compatriots believed in his Theogony version and the contradictions that were included in it and laughed against him , so he decided to leave and re-establish himself in Thessaly , central Greece , in search of more easily persuaded local regents and hegemons.

    • @Pterelaos1
      @Pterelaos1 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@raffaelecafiero3608 it is not a religion. Therefore it can not be fake. Ancient Greeks did not have a Religion according to the present content and meaning of the term. There is no ancient Greek text in which the term Religion ( i.e. "thriskia" in Greek) may be found. Religion is a term created by priesthood after 600 A.D. ( during the early Byzantine Empire and the era when the Christian gospels were written or compiled) and invested it with 3 main characteristics :a). the existence of a certain book considered as sacred ( e.g. the Holy Book in Christianity or the Quran in Islam) by the followers of that religion . This Holy Book contains symbolical stories, principles or doctrines and opinions or exemplary acts of the historical personality who is considered as the founder of that religion and therefore it is accepted as containing the Word of the Supreme Being or God . b). There is a general promise of saviour at "the end of time" or in the life after carnal death , for those who accept and attempt to follow these principles exposed in the relevant Holy Book, c). there is an organized (usually autocratic ) priesthood having a certain High Priest or Patriarch or Pope or Ayatollah etc., as it's Head, which reserves for itself the supreme right to regulate the orthodoxy of the religious beliefs and consciousness of every follower and other administrative or canonical issues.
      Such characteristics were not existent in ancient Greece. Therefore there was no religion in ancient Greece with the modern sense of this term due to the lack of these 3 main characteristics of any religion. Even the Greek term " theos" or " theoi" ( nowadays translated as god or gods ) had a very different meaning in ancient Greek . The Greek word "theos" is derived from the ancient Greek verb " theo" which means "flow" and "run" and therefore "theos" meant somebody who flows or can control the flow ( "of energy" , implicitly). All religions are real and holy for their followers and fake for the followers of other religions. But there was no fake religion in ancient Greece , since there was no religion at all. Of course there were temples and statues of gods or goddesses , but they were considered as places for a mental or contemplative contact and communication with an entity active in higher fields or planes of existence ( i.e. the mental and the causal plane) as being a "theos" ( god) or a "thea" ( goddess) and able to control the energy flow of life. No Bible , no autocratic priesthood with centralized administration , no promises of saviour after earthly life.

      Maybe Jesus was an alien. He had no biological father, performed "miracles", and ascended to the heavens (space) after coming back to life. Of course, this idea would anger too many people and wouldn't be shown in any mainstream show or movie, including Star Trek.

    • @johnwang9914
      @johnwang9914 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Michael_ORourke Mind you the accounts of Jesus's life has only been traced to 400 AD, at least three and a half centuries after his alleged existence and much of what was described of his encounters with the Roman Empire should've been recorded in their records but none of it was. The accounts may be of multiple people, the father of a child is often not known especially in lands subjugated by a military force, and very ill people recovering has often been mistaken as a resurrection from death. There is no reason to believe the accounts are of one man or rather avatar, no reason to believe they are of as fantastic occurrences as portrayed and no reason to even believe Jesus was any more than a fabrication to pull in the Hercules mythos just as the church did with the saints to bring in the numerous pagan deities. Jesus doesn't even have to have been an alien, he may very well just be fiction used as propaganda and indeed this is the most likely conclusion especially given how the churches have used the stories of Jesus to manipulate the masses. Even if Jesus had really exist, how the alleged stories of his life may not of been ordained. If anything, the TNG alien who portrayed herself through technology as a deity to match the cultures ancient myths is a more likely outcome for alien involvement with our own religious myths. To be honest, I would trust the oral history of the native Americans more than the biblical accounts that have been edited, selected and rewritten for theologic and political reasons over any sense of stewardship.

So combining that with his interest in the woman and the extra powers I can't help but question if he was telling the truth. He may have been a powerful being that visted Earth throughout the centuries and used what he remembered, or misremembered, to try to pick up a girl. Another possibility is that histry in the Trekverse isn't completely the same as ours. You have good ideas that are completely valid and might be right but I think, assuming my memory is close to how the episode was, there's evidence that he might not be telling the truth.

    The Federation has no need of gods, they are fine with their own. (Its either Kirk or Roddenbury? More likely the egomaniac Kirk.)

      By TNG it seems like the Prime Directive is the state religion. Especially when Picard starts waxing poetic about it every other episode. Keep in mind atheist religions exist irl.

      As for a god well the Q certainly have the ridiculous power to qualify. Among other comparably powerful species of the Alpha Quadrant.

    Better yet, why are they in amongst all history and Washington d.c. ohh , the dollar bill has major commercialization along with all those whole missing nations of peoples with nothing left but destroyed huge epitaphs and idols to many failed gods (i say failed because as of yet it only seems the few got out while they could as thousands were being sacrificed to these gods. But who knows? Maybe they were flown to a whole new unerverse and living the hi-Life:-)?

      Ah.... This is fantasy. The stuff of imagination. Even Kirk is imaginary. No comparison to the word of God. But God gave us the ability to imagine things.

      Star Trek is a police show showing worst case scenario mental health malefactors. Star Trek the Next Generation trashed the physics, psychology and ethos of the older 1960's television show, so much to the point where starships no longer fought at warp speed, and both Klingons and Romulans got their brains swapped.
      Apollo represents a worst case abuser with bipolar. He has all the trappings of wants and desires given to him, even the beautiful lieutenant, but he's still violently bipolar, which may actually be a psychiatric law enforcement strategy.
      I grew up with so called mental health experts and behavioral scientists who knew exactly what Trek was about, and probably gave some input to Roddenberry, a former cop.
      Other examples; Landru is a mental health hospital administrator gone rogue. Garth from third Season "Whom Gods Destroy" is a patient who takes over a hospital. Lazarus has extreme incurable bipolar, and the only solution is to lock him up. The entity from the Metamorph is a woman assigned a man who needs looking after, which is an actual mental health rehab formula by placing the male subject under surveillance. Decker goes mad when he cannot kill a seriall killer, and proof is that he tries the same thing again expecting different results. Ultimately he kills himself.
      I see a lot of reactions and reviews by fans and non-fans, and they all assigned dramatic or story oriented philosophies and motivations for characters, and then some go on to make garbage fan films not knowing what they're doing.
      What they don't tell you in film school is that all of Western media (not just the US, but Europe, Japan, even India and Australia, Honk Kong and Taiwan) use psychiatric rehab formulas, or psychological rehabs. You are essentially watching 1950s mental health films presented dramatically with actual dramatic content instead of the antiseptic staging done from those earlier films.
      Ever wonder why you don't hear or see a music video about .... the presidential race, or putting a stoplight to replace the stop sign at the local intersection? Or why you don't hear a top 40 pop tune about beating Putin in the Ukraine? That's why.
      The first amendment in the US is games by doctors to "do no harm" with mass media, and so you get a lot of cop and health shows, of which Star Trek is one.
      It's probably the best written show ever put on TV, but you and others perpetually misinterpret and simply do not know the purpose of today's present day film industry.
      And that's why your vid is garbage. .@@OrangeRiver
