Aight not to be a nerd but basically, the concern with Y2K was that when the digits flip over to 00, it doesn't just look weird, the computer actually reads it as 1900 rather than 2000. So if you had a medical record of someone born in 1901, then when they visited the hospital next, the computer would think granny caught a cold a year before she was born. It COULD'VE been an issue, but thankfully it's a fairly easy fix. Helps that we had a good amount of warning in advance, seeing as we don't change centuries terribly often.

I was 6 when Y2K hit. Thankfully my family was sensible, and my father at the time was a sysadmin so he was actively working on making sure systems wouldn't break - and so we knew it was going to be harmless. Fun fact - Y2K only affected Windows workstations, as at the time Unix systems ran a 32 bit integer of seconds since January 1st 1970 (no, that date has no meaning, it was chosen randomly) - which means they would have been fine until 2038. (And now we're running 64 bit systems so we're good for a LONG time)
2012 hit different though. Has anything really felt real since then?

fun fact: the US federal reserve actually had a Y2K disaster response team that worked to keep the economy from collapsing in the event that all the computers stopped working and poured billions of dollars of US government money into modernizing financial computer systems across america. the team had a command post in the fed's william mcchesney martin building on the night of the new year, where approximately 100 people monitored the world's transition into the 2000s. the government prepared for a complete recession, stockpiling cash at 90 locations around the US and releasing billions of dollars worth of liquidity into the US banking system. the disaster team stayed up all night to make sure that the country transitioned smoothly into Y2K.

I remember all the older generations saying “see this is what happens when you rely on all this ‘TECHNOLOGY’” usually with dramatic air quotes around technology. People thought everything in the world was just gonna stop and we were gonna go back to the Stone Age. And then midnight rolled around and literally nothing changed. I remember my uncle who was chemical engineer but was also like brilliant about everything really didn’t think anything was going to happen. So I wasn’t that scared. Everything scientific wise I have ever asked him has been right from what my memory serves me. But it was a huuuuuuuuuge deal.

When the year 2000 hit I was 8 years old with my dad at his friends house and when the ball dropped on the TV marking the new year my dad's friend pulled the power to the whole house and I thought that was the end of all electricity and running water. Instantly I got hit with these imaginations of my mom unable to run the faucet or cook us dinner and I cried my eyes out. My dad's friend turned the power back on and apologized and told me he would do ANYTHING to make me feel better. I asked him for a glass of water, because water is my favorite drink and I was losing my mind thinking I wasn't going to have it anymore. I got a glass of water and drank it down and man that glass of water hit different after crying my eyes out. Thinking back, I should have asked for $20 or something but that's my Y2K story lol.

A few bits of historical context on Y2K:
    * The actual reasons why Y2K actually happened was because in the very early days of computers, memory and storage was extremely limited and extremely expensive. Shaving the year down to two digits was one way to optimize the code. Coincidentally, this was when many long lived applications were written, such as banking software and (more importantly) embedded controllers that were never designed to be updated.
    * Patching the software was a lot harder, because in a large codebase you'd have to verify that *every* time operation worked properly, and one missed operation could introduce bugs that would put the application into an unknown state. You couldn't simply "Replace All" the faulty operations.
    * Y2K did have real potential to be a disastrous event, but precisely because massive amounts of work invested into patching old systems it ended up being a nothingburger.
It's a fun footnote in history.

@@froggysenator1144 It wasn't "panicking over a date", it was panicking over a whole lot of critical software designed around the assumption that it would all be replaced before the end of the century, which it wasn't. It was a genuine problem that, if unaddressed, could have caused a lot of damage. The only reason it seems like a lot of fuss over nothing is because a lot of people did a lot of work to actually solve the problem before any damage as done.

I remember him forcing us all outside at 11:50 just in case the malfunctions made the house catch fire and just standing in the road staring at the house when my mom just yelled, "I F***KN TOLD YOU, PHIL" and held her wristwatch up at 12:00 and took us all inside to bed.

Love your videos. Even love this one. There is a big misconception about Y2K, though. A lot of people think the ball dropped, and noting happened at the turn of the century. Technically, that is true. However, programmers did work for months, if not years, leading up to it. If they hadn't, the world could've spiraled into chaos, considering EVERYTHING was computer based, by then. You don't have to believe me, but I was 11, at the time, and my mother worked for SSA, as a programmer. I personally watched her update thousands of lines of code, just to make sure their computers and mainframes didn't crash. I'm sure every other government agency did the exact same. Regardless, love your content, keep up the good work!

One thing you should probably know, a lot of problems would have happened. They actually did try putting dates forward to see what happened and bank systems "forgot" about all the money in the accounts, hard drives deleted files that "hadn't been created yet" (because the computer thought it was 1900), and a lot of systems stopped communicating with each other. The thing no one talks about is they saw that potential and wrote simple patches for the systems where this happened. Done, problem solved. The only real concern was whether they would get it don't for everything in time (which they did... Easily).
