So if you had a medical record of someone born in 1901, then when they visited the hospital next, the computer would think granny caught a cold a year before she was born. It COULD'VE been an issue, but thankfully it's a fairly easy fix. Helps that we had a good amount of warning in advance, seeing as we don't change centuries terribly often.

I was 6 when Y2K hit. Thankfully my family was sensible, and my father at the time was a sysadmin so he was actively working on making sure systems wouldn't break - and so we knew it was going to be harmless. Fun fact - Y2K only affected Windows workstations, as at the time Unix systems ran a 32 bit integer of seconds since January 1st 1970 (no, that date has no meaning, it was chosen randomly) - which means they would have been fine until 2038. (And now we're running 64 bit systems so we're good for a LONG time) 2012 hit different though. Has anything really felt real since then?

My senior class started calling us the "Doomsday Class" since we were going to graduate then "die" in the fall. The graduation parties that were held was wild.
A few bits of historical context on Y2K: * The actual reasons why Y2K actually happened was because in the very early days of computers, memory and storage was extremely limited and extremely expensive. Shaving the year down to two digits was one way to optimize the code. Coincidentally, this was when many long lived applications were written, such as banking software and (more importantly) embedded controllers that were never designed to be updated. * Patching the software was a lot harder, because in a large codebase you'd have to verify that *every* time operation worked properly, and one missed operation could introduce bugs that would put the application into an unknown state. You couldn't simply "Replace All" the faulty operations. * Y2K did have real potential to be a disastrous event, but precisely because massive amounts of work invested into patching old systems it ended up being a nothingburger. It's a fun footnote in history.
Honestly the story of how y2k became a nothing burger is so interesting. I was 10 and I hid under the table at a new years party, laughing but kinda of being like soo.. Is the world gunna end?
Thank you for saying something, it makes me so sad how many people dont realize y2k wasn't completely a joke, and it took a lot of hard work from really skilled people to avoid!!
Thanks for saying this - my dad was one of those people working hard to prevent those potential problems, so I'm really quick to jump in when people call it a hoax. It's bad that the news latched on to people's fears the way they did, but there wasn't exactly nothing to be worried about
@@froggysenator1144 It wasn't "panicking over a date", it was panicking over a whole lot of critical software designed around the assumption that it would all be replaced before the end of the century, which it wasn't. It was a genuine problem that, if unaddressed, could have caused a lot of damage. The only reason it seems like a lot of fuss over nothing is because a lot of people did a lot of work to actually solve the problem before any damage as done.
To be clear, the Y2K bug absolutely was a thing and a lot of talented programmers and computer engineers worked their asses off to fix the problem. It wouldn't have been the end of the world, but it would have caused a lot of problems if left unchecked.
yeah, even when I was little I realized that either A) Its a scaremonger or B) They are going to fix it before its an issue, no one is going to theorize that this can happen and just only prep
This. A lot of time and money was spent trying to ensure there were no major issues when 2000 rolled around. It was a very real thing, but there was also a lot of ridiculous fearmongering around it.
@@NuttyMongrel most of us understood the problem and knew that any important computers had been updated. I don’t remember it being any real concern for most people by the time the year 2000 rolled around.
I was 6 during Y2K and I remember my dad fully tweaking about it and this unlocked some buried memories about all the crap he had us doing in the lead up. I remember him forcing us all outside at 11:50 just in case the malfunctions made the house catch fire and just standing in the road staring at the house when my mom just yelled, "I F***KN TOLD YOU, PHIL" and held her wristwatch up at 12:00 and took us all inside to bed.
Love your videos. Even love this one. There is a big misconception about Y2K, though. A lot of people think the ball dropped, and noting happened at the turn of the century. Technically, that is true. However, programmers did work for months, if not years, leading up to it. If they hadn't, the world could've spiraled into chaos, considering EVERYTHING was computer based, by then. You don't have to believe me, but I was 11, at the time, and my mother worked for SSA, as a programmer. I personally watched her update thousands of lines of code, just to make sure their computers and mainframes didn't crash. I'm sure every other government agency did the exact same. Regardless, love your content, keep up the good work!
I was 13 during this whole thing, and we went to a family new years 'party'. My dad waited outside and when the countdown hit midnight, he cut the power to the house. For a few seconds I thought the nuke were flying and it was Judgment Day.

I was born a bit after 1999-2000, so I personally didn’t expect the whole Y2K scare, but I have heard about it, as well as the whole “world ending in 2012” thing.
One thing you should probably know, a lot of problems would have happened. They actually did try putting dates forward to see what happened and bank systems "forgot" about all the money in the accounts, hard drives deleted files that "hadn't been created yet" (because the computer thought it was 1900), and a lot of systems stopped communicating with each other. The thing no one talks about is they saw that potential and wrote simple patches for the systems where this happened. Done, problem solved. The only real concern was whether they would get it don't for everything in time (which they did... Easily).
My Xbox 360 does the same thing with game saves that are time stamped when it gets its clock reset. Difference is it can be fixed easier because that date exists in the system still lmao

(And now we're running 64 bit systems so we're good for a LONG time)
2012 hit different though. Has anything really felt real since then?

A few bits of historical context on Y2K:
* The actual reasons why Y2K actually happened was because in the very early days of computers, memory and storage was extremely limited and extremely expensive.
Thank you. So few people realize the work that went in to keeping it from being a trainwreck.
Thank you so much for sharing 💙
Thank you for saying something, it makes me so sad how many people dont realize y2k wasn't completely a joke, and it took a lot of hard work from really skilled people to avoid!!
Thanks for saying this - my dad was one of those people working hard to prevent those potential problems, so I'm really quick to jump in when people call it a hoax. It's bad that the news latched on to people's fears the way they did, but there wasn't exactly nothing to be worried about

I love your mom 😎😎😎
Adults are fucking stupid dude I have no idea how they shat out and raised kids when they believed shit like y2k
that’s actually so funny
your mom is a legend
Phil 😭
My jaw dropped at the "Why two 'k'?" joke. I'm blown away. best joke ever.
I mean , it’s not though
@@Owen-fh1de it is though
@@DianaB-vm1hj it worked perfectly, but it wasn’t very funny lol
mmm and i saw this comment before the joke so it wasnt funny anymore 😄
I need to know if that was actually misspelled or did he add the K for the joke? Pressing questions here😄
Kurtis' skits are starting to look like a Neil Breen movie. I'm here for it
IKR ITS AMAZING
I was 13 during this whole thing, and we went to a family new years 'party'. My dad waited outside and when the countdown hit midnight, he cut the power to the house. For a few seconds I thought the nuke were flying and it was Judgment Day.
Your dad has an elite sense of humor
That's so cruel omg
Lmao that's amazing
STFU MY GRANDMA DID THAT AND THEN SCREAMED LMAAOAOA WE ALMOST HAD A HEART ATTACK💀 she always pulls pranks I love her
someone else commented almost the same thing but it was their dad’s friend. were y’all at the same party? you should see if after all these years you two ended up commenting on the same y2k video
Easily).
This is by far the best explanation of what y2k actually was imo. I’ve seen other explanations but they just confused me even more
Exactly, nothing happened because all major systems were reprogrammed. My mom was a Y2K programmer
@@luke_skinner Liar. Your mom can't be a Y2K programmer cuz she's a women.
My Xbox 360 does the same thing with game saves that are time stamped when it gets its clock reset.
Difference is it can be fixed easier because that date exists in the system still lmao
It makes me so livid when men claim women don’t understand computers when it was women who pioneered computer science in the first place, it wasn’t a respected field until men noticed how useful it was and swooped in to steal the credit 😐
The actress Hedy Lamarr is responsible for the technology that eventually became Wi-Fi.
exactly😩
