Today we have an N scale Atlas GP40-2, DC, in MKT colors. I bought this brand new from Lombard Hobbies back in March for $89 plus tax and shipping. I finally got around to taking a look at it and.. Well.. It's not quite what I expected.

That's just the nature of the hobby my friend. One has to learn these things as we go along on the adventure
It could be the one side that's bent down might be making contact below. It'd icelate it with a piece of tape and see if that takes care of the issue.
It could be it might have a bit of loose wire wrapped between the split chasey that might give you enough slack so the truck will be more free range to move freely
Food for thought
Always appreciate your videos on locomotive issues as I have quite a few locomotives that have never ran. I have ordered a new power pack and Kato track to start testing. I do have an FB3 unit I tested around 20 years ago that didn't run. Brand new like this atlas and didn't run, but the two FA and FB units ran. Looking forward to figuring why it doesn't run.
There is a lot of diagnostic work in my early videos, Mike. Check them out if you need tips or inspiration. And don't hesitate to post a comment on here if you have questions. I'm no master but i'll help as best as I can.
Try a Kato Sound Box if you tired fiddling with DCC sound. I just got one and it's the best addition to my N scale railroading ever! I connected it to a large audio system and it is amazing. I continue to love your videos. Keep it up!
I have thought about it. Pretty spendy but it looks like it'd give me DCC type sound plus the DC reliability.
@@Trains-With-ShaneI got one recently and it has me staying with DC on my layout. The sound is much better when connected to a sound system instead of dinky little onboard speakers. Totally worth it for the Kato soundbox!
It does for me eventually
LOVE IT BRO! Keep the videos coming!
Thanks Pat!
Food for thoughtonthe gears and trucks there might be just a bit of flashing that might be enough that's hanging it up or catching it making it stall at times
You bought it new but it's old stock sitting on the shelf for God know's how long they are going to get crap on the wheels still. That's why I always clean my wheels on every engine beforiplan to run anything. 61 year's has taught me that it's become second nature for me to always do so.
I like the troubleshooting you show in the video. If/when you reach out to Atlast, you'll have a solid resource to show them all the stuff you went through.
Thanks David. It's kindof a mess. I'm not a fan of this new truck-power routing design.
Hi Shane, I really think you should have a chat with Atlas to be honest, you spent good money for it and for it to not run or run well is not good especially if bought new. If Atlas stand by their quality standards, they should be notified and then see what they can do to rectify it.
I'm leaning in that direction.
I have a GP9 from Atlas. Had to run it at 50% power for 45 min. in each direction. Blackening the wheels leaves a coating that needs to be worn off. Their scale speed motor takes a bit of voltage to get going as well. Now it runs smooth as silk. DCC model, no sound. Kato's Mikado had the same problem, the blackened wheels only let it pull 3 MT cars out of the box. That unit has the scale speed motor, I'm not a big fan. Nice vid.
I might see if i can set a break-in track up and let it go for an hour
Cleaning the wheels with a fiber glass pencil woulded hurt
Thats a really nice looking unit. Runs like crap..... that's railroading 😂👍😊
LOL very true. Hoping that maybe a break-in might help. Might have to take it over to the Rescue Layout to do that as I don't have any place to set up any Kato track. Thanks for stopping by, Dave!
Very nice locomotive! Very sad that the locomotive is causing some problems tho.
Yeah. I wish it just worked. Interestingly I buy very few brand new locomotives. And of those. the ONLY ones that I have had not work out of the box, were Atlas. one DCC/Sound and this DC unit. I've never had that issue with Bachmann as much as everybody likes to talk trash about them.
I dunno what's going on with Atlas QC. I bought a new Dash 8-40BW and the fuel tank sat too low contacting the rails and there was paint blocking off one the ditch lights. I returned it and didn't try another. If I was you I would have rejected this unit.
I should have tested it right when It arrived. But it's been over 4 months now.
John Lennon used to say that "life gets in the way of the plans you make"
True words!
Did you buy this at your hobby shop or on line. This is why I chose HO gage.
Lombard Hobbies. A well known and well regarded store. But it was an online purchase from their web store because I don't have a good very local hobby shop.
Don't give up, it can be fixed it doesn't look like to me it's going to take that much to get it running like it should. Takeyoyrtime putiton the back burnerfora few days. The solution will come to you I'm sure
Clean out that white lub out of the wheel chassis and replace it with a drop of 108 ,check the clearence between the motor armenture and the outer shrod its rubbing....
I couldn't find any signs of rubbing unlike the Intermountain SD40-2 from a few weeks ago. But it is possible.
No telling how long it was in a factory wearhouse stored, or even shipped to your location and howlong it wasinstoragethere bebforitwas put on the shelf or how longitwas on the store shelf before you bought it and you said earlier it set put up a longtime before you tried running it when making this video
Something is not right with the loco for sure.
This is very typical of atlas in my experience. They are extremely hit or miss. And the OLDER the unit, the better they usually are. That new wire system might be the worst step back in design I’ve ever seen.
I’d definitely call atlas and point them at your video. Ask them about that grease too. It’s totally unnecessary, and just attracts dust and fuzz and makes a mess. Curious what they say.
Broadway limited use the same wired trucks, and they are a nightmare also. I have had two warranty fixes and they both lasted about a month. Same issues with the wire's ether shorting out or breaking at the solder joint. I will stick to my KATO loco's !! I just do not see how wired trucks can work on N-scale loco's.
It could be it might have a bit of loose wire wrapped between the split chasey that might give you enough slack so the truck will be more free range to move freely
