- A month or two ago Peter, The Alco Diesel Guy here on TH-cam, reached out and wanted to know if I'd be interested in a Christmas locomotive exchange. I immediately agreed and set about finding the perfect gift. We cross shipped and I've had this in my possession for a few weeks now promising that I wouldn't open it until Christmas day. Now that Christmas is coming to a close for 2024 I figured i'd save the best part for last and unwrap my present!

I knew when I saw that locomotive it may as well have had, Insert Shane's model railroad name, written in as a patch to the GM paint scheme. It was described to me as being "new" so
was hemming and hawing about opening it and testing it, before I sent it to you, to insure it worked, with all of Atlas's quality control antics as of late, but decided to leave it so you would get it in NIB condition. Turns out, someone had already messed with it as it was clearly out of the box, the bell did not clear the foam correctly and the packaging foam around the hand rails appears to be missing.

It's awesome, Peter! Thank you! Merry Christmas. Glad you liked what I sent you as well. When I saw it pop up I knew it was without question perfect for you. It's not often that gift choices are so assuredly easy. Knew you loved the Alco PA and after coming through your entire channel to make sure you didn't already have one of the gold units I pulled the proverbial trigger and got it on the way to me ASAP. Shout out to my mother for the wrapping. She's much better at it than I am and offered when I told her about this project. That curly ribbon is how she's wrapped gifts since the before times. lol.

Excellent presentation Shane. High hoods are all right if you got a conductor who pays attention,but for what we got with only 1 in the cab high hoods,would make an operator pretty nervous bout what was in front of him. 👍😊

I'm curious to hear how this plays with your sound box..... I had an Atlas Trainman GP15... Out of all 25 of my locomotives is the only one that wouldn't play with the sound box.... As soon as I would give it a little bit of juice on any of my layouts the soundbox will go into protection mode. Otherwise it worked fine with regular transformers. I never did figure out what the issue was maybe a bad motor winding? I ended up selling it.

Shane, belated Merry Christmas to you. I poked around Atlas website to see if I could find a parts list for the GP-20, but they don't anything for them. I did happen to notice however, the have in stock, the sister unit to the one you have, #5627. I was really surprised considering these units were released in 2018.
I wonder if there may have been a second production run.
Well, no this is the initial run, but I've got an idea why the still have them in stock. 2018 wasn't the release date, it was when they announced them. They didn't actually get produced and make it to the US until August of this year. I found #5627 in stock at Hogs Trains at a pretty good deal for 89 bucks.
