      I did mine at 2 feet, to safe a little money. It's recommended to do them at 1 foot apart. Mine have done pretty good at 2 feet, but anywhere between that will yield great results!

    • @rsxen8990
      @rsxen8990 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      It's taking a while for my hedge to connect at the bottom at 2' spacing. The recommended is 1'. So consider if complete filled in look is something important. 5' from the fence is good, Privets have a wide spread so you have full control of how close it gets in the future.

      No fertilizer at all. You may need to trim the top more often especially when you see first signs of new growth, this is the only way to encourage the bottom areas. If they are very old (+6 years) it's going to take awhile. I wish there was an easier solution.

Did you cut them down to that size because I saw your video you planted the plants at the same time. Nope, just plenty of water at the start. Are they a lot taller at least? Sometimes (like mine did), they'll want to stretch (taller over wider). So you will have to cut the tops a little to encourage them to fill in. This is what I am having to do with mine since they got way taller before getting any good thickness!

    I came across your videos and I am amazed how quickly your privets have grown! I planted mine about 9 years ago and although they have grown to a small privacy hedge, they are no where as tall as yours! (We're the same height so I don't need as tall of a ladder to trim the top!) Perhaps we have different breeds of privet (I have the waxleaf) but how did you get yours to grow tall? Do you recommend trimming the tops to encourage growth?

    • @rsxen8990
      @rsxen8990 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm a bit surprised they haven't grow as large in that time! Privets are known to be fast growing, waxleaf is one of them, I wonder if maybe they are another close species. If they are getting full sun and water a few times a month they should be booming. I don't water them unless theres +100 degree weeks. If you need them taller, don't trim the tops or if you must trim only half of the new growth (if you get any). I trim the top of mine so that they grow outwards and fill in more. Mine got taller before filling in, maybe yours filled in quicker, so you'll need to encourage the height. Hope that helps a little!

    • @Atlas_Max11

      @@rsxen8990 mine started out as $15 potted plants from home depot. When I started mine, they were lower to the ground and a little shorter than the 5 month old plants in your video. Mine are definitely more filled in at the bottom. I definitely need to encourage the top growth.

    Just bought a new zero G hose and it leaked so much water would not even run into the hose. Fail!

      It's not the worse, depending what price it was bought at and if someone trims all year long (here it's only 4-maybe 5 months a year). So mine didn't get much use imo. Paid a little more for a Greenworks and its going into the 5th year.

    ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️I tried Sunshine Ligustrum which failed (not sure why: planted wrong time of the year and/or wind, etc.). I am wondering if this might be a good alternative but you mention wind damage so I am unsure.

      I'm surprised the Sunshine Privet failed! These have been very simple to keep up with and so far have gone through multiple seasons of +100 degree summers and drought conditions and strong wind storms. The wind damage that occurred here was when they were young and when I had to move them. They were still growing after the damage, just they would have been a bit crooked had I not adjusted them the few times wind pushed the few over. Hope that helps and thank you for stopping by!

      @@rsxen8990 Mine were Sunshine Ligustrum which I think might be a little different than yours? The Sunshine Ligustrum I had have a different shape than yours. I was thinking of trying these but might try Gold Mop Cypress instead since it seems to be doing well in a neighbor’s yard.

      @@sterlgirlceline Cypress are nice, though I needed a shrub that would get taller than 4-5 feet and would start blocking very quickly! :)

      @@rsxen8990 I am discovering that I so limited with the wind here. Hoping for something gold to offset a grey house, but I am not in a position to be choosy at this point. If anyone reads this and has suggestions for an evergreen hedge/shrub that gets around 5-6’ tall and maintainable at 3-4’ wide that can tolerate wind in zone 9a I would be grateful for suggestions 🙏🏻

    Looks great! Can you share the plant name you planted? I am eager to plant something similar.

      @rsxen8990 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's a Northern Privet, "Ligustrum x" is the scientific name. Mine is specifically the "ligustrum amurense". They aren't evergreen (leaves all year), if you have actual winter season. If you want that look at Laurel (Laurocerasus) or Leyland (Leylandii). Thank for stopping by!
