I am a lover of nature and the beauty of our countryside, I love getting out in the hills to see the amazing views. Walking is something I have always enjoyed and something I will continue to do for as long as I am able. I have started making these videos to keep a record of all the wonderful places I have visited.
Herriot Way
2nd - 4th September 2024.
Walked the Herriot Way over three days. We were staying in our touring caravan at Simonstone so started and ended my walk from there.
Day 1: Simonstone to Ivelet Bridge. Tough day with a lot of elevation. Great Shunner Fell was hard going, very boggy in places, many flagstones well under water and they were very slippery on the way down. Also I was in heavy cloud while up there so there were no views. After Thwaite there was another steep climb but then it levelled off. From Keld to Ivelet Bridge was very scenic and easy walking. 20 miles - 2898 feet elevation.
Day 2: Ivelet Bridge to Castle Bolton. Another long day with a fair bit of elevation. Easy walking to Reeth with some lovely views along the River Swale. Most of the climbing began after Grinton and over High Hawker Hill. The moorland track where the grouse butts were was quite stony in places and a bit tough on the feet, but I ended the day with a lovely grassy downhill track to Castle Bolton. Beautiful warm, sunny day. 19.3 miles - 2461 feet elevation.
Day 3 Castle Bolton to Simonstone. Much easier day today, less miles and much less elevation. Waterfalls at Aysgarth and Mill Gill were beautiful. Mainly grassy fields and stiles today. 15.75 miles - 1170 feet elevation.
Very lucky with the weather, apart from the cloud over Gt Shunner Fell. Warm and dry all three days, just started raining slightly as I reached Simonstone at the end of my final day. A beautiful walk with some fabulous scenery.
Overall a total of 55 miles and 6529 feet elevation.

Grindsbrook Clough, Brown Knoll and Rushup Edge Walk

Not a circular walk today, though could be made into one but would add a fair bit of additional mileage. Started in Edale and took the tough but lovely scramble up Grindsbrook Clough. Walked along to Crowden Edge and followed path to Noe Stool. From there I took the path to Kinder Low Trig and then on to Edale rocks where I took a short break. I then went across Brown Knoll and on to Rushup Edg...

21st May 2024. Started off with a bit of easy moorland walking today. It was cool to start off but warmed up a little, though not too much, making it good walking weather. I had a scare while approaching the Limestone Pavement when several young calves came running towards me. As it happened there were two fell ponies in with the calves who proceeded to run through the calves and then veer away...

20th May 2024. Much cooler today than the previous two days, but still pleasant and dry. Early climb to start up the Howgills, although not as difficult as I was anticipating. It was cloudy at times on the tops but kept clearing so I got some decent views. Lovely ridge walk along the tops and I really enjoyed it up there. If you like being all alone it's a great place for that I never saw a sou...

19th May 2024. Scorching hot today from early on. Started by walking to the village of Chapel le Dale and past the church to soon arrive at the path junction where you can carry on around the side Whernside, or climb up to the summit. As I had already done Pen-y-Ghent and Ingleborough on the previous two days, I had to do Whernside as well. It's quite a steep climb up and hard going in the heat...

18th May 2024. Continued the normal Dales High Way route that most people take from Langcliffe, by walking along the River Ribble to Stainforth Force, an impressive waterfall. I then headed to the small village of Freizor which is nestled in quite a pretty area. Crossed three lovely different types of bridges today before starting the long climb up Ingleborough. 17th May 2024. I added this as an extra day and walked from the caravan site at Langcliffe, where we were staying to Horton in Ribblesdale via Pen-y-Ghent. From Langcliffe village I headed towards Stainforth passing the Craven Lime Works. The tunnel there is quite dark and a little spooky, but it's an interesting place to visit. From Stainforth village it is over moorland to reach Pen-y-Ghent. ...

16th May 2024. A lovely walk today with some beautiful scenery. Started with a long steady climb all the way up to Weets Top, then dropped down into Malham. I did a short detour to visit Gordale Scar where I watched a brave man climbing up by the waterfall. Malham Cove is so pretty and although I've visited it several times in the past, I never tire of it's beauty. There is a short sharp climb ...

15th May 2024 Better weather today, dry and quite warm. Quite easy walking to start today. After Sharp Haw I took the optional route up Rough Haw, which was quite easy and did not add much to the distance. There was a very deep boggy section just after Sharp and Rough Haw which took a bit of negotiating, but eventually found a way past. Between Flasby and Hetton it was easy walking and quite sc...

I found the track a little difficult to follow through the wood, but found the road where I needed to be. I did detour up to the trig ...

A short early morning walk from the caravan site we were staying at in Simonstone while on holiday. It was only 2.5 miles but nearly all fields, footpaths or tracks with some lovely views. Very relaxing and peaceful video Jean, it was for me watching anyway ! while you were hiking 👏🏻
Thank you, glad you enjoyed relaxing while I was walking! It was a great walk, I loved it.
Hi Jean! My husband and I were inspired to hike the Coast to Coast, in part because of your videos! We had such a fabulous adventure 🎉 (May/June 2024) !! Now, you're inspiring us to think about the Herriot Way 🌻🌻 TY for the excellent videos/ sharing your experiences!
Thank you very much for your lovely comment and I am so pleased that you have enjoyed my videos. I am flattered. The Coast to Coast is such a fabulous walk, I'm glad you enjoyed it. I was looking for a shorter walk this time which is why I chose the Herriot Way. I am sure you will enjoy the Herriot Way if you decide to walk it, the scenery is beautiful. Happy walking.
Jean, we love your videos! My husband and I were so inspired by your Coast to Coast journey: we then did it!! We finished about a month ago, what a fabulous adventure! At some point I'll have the energy/time to upload our videos. Thanks for inspiration/tips, and you'll be amused that I wore a handy vest just like yours, lol! 🌻🦋🦋🦋
Thank you, what a lovely comment. The Coast to Coast is an amazing walk and it's a great feeling to have achieved it. Well done to you and your husband. Hope to see your videos when you upload them. Love the fact you wore a vest like mine. it's so handy to have all those pockets. I find it so useful.
Just subscribed to your channel so hopefully will get a notification when you get your video on here.
Great vlog, thanks for sharing.
Thank you, glad you enjoyed it.
Loved the videos - so many times when I thought "We sat there for lunch!" or "I remember crossing that bridge!" Looking forward to your next adventure.
Glad you've enjoyed my videos Richard. It's nice when you recognise places you've visited yourself. I'm hoping to walk the Herriot Way later this year.
Love the Howgills - all that open walking and not a wall or stile to be seen.
I too loved this section, it's very different to many places I have walked and I didn't see anyone at all while I was up there. I just loved the solitude and it was my favourite day.
That boggy section on Aye Gill Pike was still very boggy a month later when I decided to catch a train to Dent and then walk over AGP to Sedbergh - still with good boots you can keep your feet dry, well you can until one boggy section went over the top of the boot!!
Oh dear, not so good getting a boot full. I take walking poles with me and check the boggy sections, and although it may take longer I have so far avoided going in too deep.
I went up Ingleborough twice last year - June - hot and clear, views for miles, Dec - cold, wet and foggy - you couldn't see the trig from the shelter and the rain was coming in parallel to the ground. Still both walks formed the basis of very different experiences.
I was lucky to have good views, but it was so very hot - it made it hard work climbing up. Interesting to go in different weather's though, can make it look so different. Couldn't have been so good in bad rain though.
It was so hot when we walked this way, one of our group dropped out at The Angel, Hetton and got a taxi on to the next stop. Glorious walking. Will be back there later in the year. Enjoying the videos Jean. Many thanks.
Tough going when it's hot, I find it saps your strength. Hope you put some photos or video's up when you go again.
One of our group sat down on that bench at Sharp Haw - they got back up gain pretty damn sharpish as it was hot enough to cook a steak. Great reliving the walk. Many thanks.
Wow yes, I guess that seat could get pretty hot. It was quite windy when I was up there though still pretty hot. Thank you, glad my videos have brought back some good memories for you.
What a difference 11mths makes! I walked this path Jun 23 toward the end of last years heatwave. Everything was so dry from start to finish - with the sun behind you all the way, the backs of my legs were heaily tanned whilst the fronts remained white.
Must have been hard going in that heat. I had pretty good weather apart from the first day and even then it was very warm. I found the heat made it harder going especially when climbing Ingleborough and Whernside. It was easier over the Howgills as it was much cooler. Hope you enjoyed the route and didn't suffer from sunburn.
Finally got round to making a start on these. Damp and foggy start but loved the barge name 😂
@@pipes-hikes despite the rain and fog, it was very muggy - I was so hot with my waterproofs on. Yes the barge has a great name doesn't it!
Well done Jean, just finished watching the whole series ,The videos were great to watch has they brought back some good memories from when I walked the route in 2022,
Thank you Kevin. It's good to know you've watched all my videos and I'm glad you enjoyed them. It's not a bad walk is it, apart from all the cows!! haha.
Well done Jean on your hiking. Thanks for sharing. Can you plz tell what is significance of touching the Trig or the summit. Thanks 😊😊😊
Thank you. I touch the trig as it is an acknowledgement of my success of reaching the summit.
Beautiful nature places and walk. Video Like 👍
Thank you. It's a beautiful walk.
@@jeanpipes1160 You're welcome new friend 🙂
What a fabulous walk and great vlog, thanks for sharing.
Thank you. glad you enjoyed it.
Lovely video, I did it myself at the beginning of June, three good weather days, and one terrible, the last one.
Thank you. Glad you like the video. It's a great walk, I loved it. Hope you had a great time, shame the weather let you down on the last day.
Long way for day 1 was it too long?
I found it ok to be honest. Although I covered some mileage, there were no long or difficult ascents or descents. The worse bit was the long, long moor after High Paradise Farm, as it seemed to go on for ages. My feet were aching a bit at the end of the day, but soon recovered. Have you walked the Cleveland Way, or are you planning to?
I'm doing it in May. Planning on 7 days. Will be my first hike. Very conscious of not over doing it early on. Any tips??
I had no problems doing it in 7 days and I was 69 at the time. I walked regularly every day prior to doing it, and once a week I would walk 20 miles locally with a fully loaded backpack to prepare myself. (Very flat where I live though, but it prepared me for the distance). I took a few breaks on route too, taking photos and videos and simply just enjoying the views. I also took plenty of snacks to keep my energy levels up. I thoroughly enjoyed it, and I'm sure you will too. Good luck on your walk. please let me know how you get on.
Well I did it. 7 days. Loved it. Really loved it
@@peterleigh8474 thank you for getting back to me on this, So glad you enjoyed it, and in 7 days too. Well done. It is a great walk.
I'm walking this in June so thank you! How do you stay so fit to walk so many miles a day??
I have always enjoyed walking and now I'm retired I have the time to go out every day. Unfortunately, where I live it's flat, so I do try to get to the Peak District now and then to walk the hills. It's a great walk, I'm sure you will love it.
Jean, my husband and I are enjoying your videos so much, finding them so inspiring! We've booked our plans for the Coast to Coast in May this year, very excited! Can u give any tips on what you found essential re clothing/ taking along in your pack? What you wish you'd brought, what you didn’t end up needing? Thank you for any tips! 🌻
Thank you for your kind comment. I chose to wear boots and also gaiters, and for me that was great as I managed to keep my feet dry, even over the boggy areas. As you will be aware, I was sleeping in a caravan each night so only needed a day pack, which contained lightweight waterproof jacket and trousers, basic first aid kit with blister plasters, (that I didn't need as I wore liner socks under my walking socks). Food and water of course and some loose change as there are several honesty boxes along the route. Sun cream, sunglasses, spare socks and a microfibre towel just in case my feet got wet though didn't need them. I found walking poles very useful too. I took a map but never needed it as I had the route downloaded on my phone. Be aware that the route is not signposted very well in many places, especially in the Lakes. Hope this helps you. It's a great walk and I met some lovely people on route. If you enjoy it half as much as I did, you will love it.
Wow, thank you, Jean, for your reply! So helpful!! ❤ We'll definitely follow yr advice. We may even try to do some filming on trail! Our best to you for continued adventures in 2024!!
Thank you. Pleased to be of help and it's certainly worth taking videos and photos. Enjoy your walking,
Well done. Really enjoyed your vids and walk..brings back the memories. I did an extra bit from Filey to Bridlington which actually was even better than any coastal bit of the official Cleveland Way. Subscribed and will catch up with your other vids
Thank you. I will have to try the walk from Filey to Bridlington sometime. Well done to you too, hope you enjoyed the Cleveland Way as much as I did. I will take a look at your videos and subscribe when I get the chance.
Nice one again. Liking the music. Hayburn Wike probs my fav spot on entire walk. Botj cafes at Boggle Hole and Ravenscar visitor centre really nice.
Glad you like the music. I enjoyed Hayburn Wyke, though I have visited it before. Quite busy through Boggle Hole when I went through, so I didn't stop, This was a much shorter section for me so an easier day.
Nice one. I started at Runswick and finished at Robin Hoods Bay. Love Whitby but it was heaving.
I was at Whitby quite early so it was quiet (never known it so peaceful). Robin Hood's Bay was very busy though.
Nice watch again. I stopped at Runswick Bay .had my breakfast and walk out to the end of pier in Saltburn first .then lovely way to celebrate my birthday by having a pint in Staithes. Im always a big advocate of looking back where you have come from
This was one of my favourite sections, lots to see and beautiful views. Staithes is lovely.
Once again very enjoyable and relateable for me. This was my favourite section. Had a lovely sit down on the memorial bench after Roseberry Topping and chatting to folk. Cafe at Slapewath was excellent and I love everything about Saltburn .walk through the woods was a great finish to the day
Roseberry Topping was the highlight of this section for me, but it was all interesting. Those steps at Slapewath seemed to go on and on - thought I was at the top but then more steps appeared!!
Enjoyed that Jean. I had much the same experience except that I didnt enjoy the last few miles from Bloworth into Kildale
I enjoyed every bit of this section, especially the first part. where I was lucky enough to have good weather and therefore great views. The latter section was much easier going and not as scenic so I can understand why you did not enjoy it so much.
Nice one Jean. First time Ive seen your vids come up in my search. I walked and videod Cleveland Way this summer. I found that stage really stony and sore on the feet as well. A long hike up on the moor but I also found last couple of miles into Osmotherley a long stretch. Our style of videoing is not too dissimilar. Enjoyed it and gonna catch up with the rest of them now.
Thank you, glad you enjoyed my video. My feet felt like they did not belong to me at the end of the day! The moor after High Paradise Farm just went on forever but I'm glad I did this section all in one go. I'll have a look at your TH-cam channel as soon as I get time.
Loving your choice of music but what is it please
Its called "One & One" by Robert Miles feat. Maria Naylor. Its a great song, I love it.
I’m thoroughly enjoying your series. My husband and I 1st booked the C2C to walk in June 2020 and, with the pandemic, postponed to September 2021. As we are Canadian and not fully vaxed then we regretfully had to cancel. We have now re-booked for September 2024. 4 years older and now in our late 60’s. We have no illusions that it will be easy but your videos have given me both inspiration and encouragement. We will be taking it a bit slower than you, having booked it for 18 days. Now to get back to your day 3!
Glad you're enjoying my videos. The pandemic spoiled a lot of people's plans unfortunately. Glad you've finally got it booked again. Age is just a number, I am 70 and to be honest I was not 100% sure I would complete it but actually managed ok. Yes it was tough, especially in the Lake District, but once I'd got through there, my confidence grew and I became sure I could do it. I thoroughly enjoyed the walk and met some lovely people along the way. Hope all goes well for you next year, and that you enjoy the walk as much as I did.

Stunningly gorgeous views!
Agreed, some great views on this section and it was a beautiful hot day too.
Beautiful last day to finish up your walk. Congratulations!! Really enjoyed all your videos. Blessings
Thank you, glad you enjoyed them. The last day was great, beautiful weather and the great feeling you have knowing you've almost completed the walk.
Beautiful view at the very beginning of video. Love all the different greens, yellows, browns and blue. What was the bird with the long beak. I do not believe we have that here in USA. You seen such a variety of animals on this section. I'm always happy to see so many different animals. WOW! 24 miles. That is amazing. How many hours did that take you. Gorgeous video. Blessings
I think the bird with the long beak is a Curlew, we get lots on the moors. I enjoyed this section and yes, there was a lot of wildlife on the moors.
Weather may have been cloudy, but your spirit was all sunny.. Enjoyed the video. Blessings
I loved this section of the walk despite the rain and cloud. I am keen to walk this part again as it's so beautiful on a good day.
Crossing the highway was a little scary. Glad you were very patient with the traffic. Lovely video. Thanks for sharing. Blessings
Crossing that duel carriageway is not the best part of the walk! and I wasn't going to take any chances.
You have made it halfway. How exciting for you. Blessings
It felt good to reach the halfway section and Swaledale is an absolutely beautiful area.
We did the C2C two weeks after you, it was mostly dry up at the NSR. We only had a half hour of light rain on the entire route, the weather was immaculate!
@@thegreatexaggerator9077 that's great, it helps if the weather is good. I only had 2 wet days so not too bad really. Hope you loved the walk as much as I did.

Thank you again, the waterfalls were very impressive, just a shame the weather was rather overcast on the higher parts.
Beautiful scenery in this section. Lovely video. Thanks for sharing. You are an inspiration to young and older people alike. Blessings
What a lovely comment, thank you. The views were brilliant on this section, loved it. Pushing myself to complete long distance walks is what keeps me going.

Well done Jean! I did the walk a couple of weeks after you, in brilliant weather! Look forward to reminiscing as I watch the rest of your hike.
Well done to you too. Great when the weather stays good. Hope you enjoy the videos.
Quite inspiring. Thinking of doing a Dales Way but doing Ilkley-Grassington, Grassington - Horton in Ribblesdale, HiR to Dent (via the Yorkshire 3 peaks), then Dent to BoW in a couple more days. Need to get the OS maps from the library.
Thank you. It's a beautiful area and including the 3 peaks should make it interesting and more challenging.
Congratulations on finishing the walk.
Thank you Richard, I enjoyed it even though it was tough at times. I'm so glad I did it, such a great feeling walking down to the sea at Robin Hood's Bay. Well done to you too, it's a great achievement for all who complete it.
Wow - impressed at 24 miles. We averaged about 15 miles/day, finishing the walk in 14 days.
It was a lovely day, great weather, easy walking and I just felt very good so I carried on going. I was glad to get that big climb out of Grosmont out the way.
@@jeanpipes1160 we had the climb out of Grosmont first thing in the morning - as we reached the turning, the heavens opened in a short sharp shower but after Ravenscar I had decided waterproof trousers were a waste of energy so I just walked on.
We were so lucky with this section - it was beautifully clear and we could see the sea from the first rise after coming out of the woods. Still, 3 more days to the sea though.
It was a shame it was so cloudy but at least I knew how it should have looked from doing the Cleveland Way on a beautiful clear day last year. I loved this section though, despite the bad weather I had.
Hopefully, now the route has been officially adopted, they put a safe crossing for the A19?
I guess they will. It took me a while as you probably saw from my video, but made it safely. I think this bit worries some people.
@@jeanpipes1160 we all crossed the road safely and them were nearly mown down by a van that came off the A19 and round the corner much too quickly - still we all survived and all reached RHB in the end
