hi Dylan, just wanted to say thanks for helping me with my decision. I was debating on getting FP, but after seeing what you could do with it, I’m honestly blown away. Looking forward to more of your work. watching your videos is such a pleasure
Hey friend! I appreciate this comment so much 🙏🏾 Really glad my content was able to help! I hope you have a great experience with the fp. Welcome to the family 😊
Right?! I was shooting exclusively in 1080p on the fp for awhile. I’ve recently gone back to UHD now that I have a streamlined rig with accessories from Dark Power labs. Love the 10-bit 1080 that comes out of that camera though
I use my FP with Contax Zeiss primes and the Metabones Cine C/Y to L mount adapter. Images are crazy. My favourite lenses in the 35mm f1.4 and 85mm f1.4. Simply stunning - so far away from the ‘video look’ of most codecs.
Your videos are always amazing! I am also using Sigma fp, and I am so grateful that I can get a lot of useful information to help with video shooting. Looking forward to more informative videos in the future!
Thank you so much! I keep wondering if I should making videos about something else 🤣, but there's so much to talk about! More informative videos coming soon!
really nice video, just found your channel after buying an the Sigma FP myself. Trying to learn as much about the camera as possible. Do you know of any really fast glass for the camera? I'm looking at the Mitakon speedmasters but not sure if the super 35 1.0 cine primes will cover a full frame image circle.
I haven’t used any super fast glass yet. The fastest I’ve used are the Sigma Art 18-35 and the TT Artisan 17mm which are both 1.8 but they are also both APSC-C lenses 😕 They both work great with the camera’s DC crop mode turned on though 👍🏾
Hi Dylan love your work! do you compress your 12bit 1080p file before editing? how much is the difference between 4k raw and 1080p raw file? Thanks for inspiring us!
You’re very welcome! I’m glad I was able to pass some inspiration forward. The size of the 12-bit 1080p file is about a 1/4 of the size of the 12-bit UHD file. I get exactly 50 minutes of 12-bit 1080p footage on my Lexar 256gb card (amzn.to/465A1gT) and I get just under 45 mins of footage when shooting on 12-bit UHD to my Samnsung T5 drive (amzn.to/3IQKYK2)
Hello sir, First off, AMAAAZING image, as usual. My question is, do you think there is much of a image quality difference between the HD and 4K raw 12-bit, or, do you believe it to be negligible?
Thanks for the compliment 🙏🏾 so far I think the HD image comes very close to being as “good” as the UHD stuff, but I wouldn’t go as far as to say I’m never going to shoot in 4k again
Great test! Amazing footage! I wonder, did you stabilise the footage in post, in Resolve? Or did you weight down the FP in some way, it doesn't look too jittery, wonder why people complain about lack of IBIS if this is unstabilised footage.
Almost ALL of it is stabilized. It’s an extra step that’s quite necessary. As usual, weighing down the camera with a heavier lens does help though. Thanks for watching!
I use a canon ef to l mount adapter, the one from viltrox. With that the amazing stabilization of canon lenses work perfectly. That gets rid of micro jitters, and some lenses like the 24-70 is usm f4 even will lead to you questioning the need for a gimbal. And I don't think I have to say, that the bokeh of canon glass is beautiful, yet the ef lenses are dirt cheap
I did! I think I use the Nikkor 35mm on the Sigma fp more than any other lens really. My other two go-to's are the Helios 44-2 58mm and the Canon EF 28mm. What I'm looking at next is the Sigma contemporary 20mm. I don't have any native L mount lenses and I was able to test that one out a few months back and I'm still thinking about it lol
Thanks a lot for your videos Dylan. Want to check if you use an nd filter on any of your videos and if yes would you suggest a variable nd filter or something else + battery solutions that you may have . Thanks.
I use a relatively cheap variable ND (ND2 to ND32) made by K&F Concept (amzn.to/3QFH34J). I don't have any battery solutions. I just have a bunch of the bp-51 batts and typically go through about 3 or 4 in a very long day. Sometimes, if I'm shooting on and off on a casual day, I'll go through 1 or 2
Thanks for the 1080p testing. Ive heard davinci resolve superscaling from 1080p to 4k takes a long time, do you remember how long it took resolve to superscale the amount of footage used for this video?
Beautiful! I really like the combination of the family scenes with the slow mo context scenes and the music. So emotional! BTW, how did you deal with the aliasing/moire at 1080p? I find a big difference shooting in 1080p over 4K the reason why I purchased the SSD rack Lite from Dark Power Laboratory (to still keep a lightweight setup).
Thanks! Really glad you enjoyed it. As for the aliasing, I used the Super Scale feature in Resolve and I always set the sharpening parameter to medium and noise reduction to low. I also make sure not to add any sharpening during the grade (or very very little) and that seems to be working out
Amazing work and fantastic results. You ability as a creator is great. I need your help in understanding, how do you focus so correctly, ani lidar devices native auto-focus or always manual focus with a puller or otherwise? Please make a rig or your camera setup video. Thank you and happy life.
Thank you! I don’t use any focus assist beyond a follow focus on my blackmagic pocket cinema camera from time to time. Otherwise I’m always manual focus - one hand on the camera, the other on the lens
@@DylColeman, It seemed to me that in some street scenes, you can make the picture softer. Maybe add CPL? EL-Zone allows for very precise and fast exposure metering. I could be wrong of course, keep shooting!
@@UriRa What's a CPL? Are you referring to the Disney characters parade scenes? And by "softer" do you mean less contrast? I struggled with those scenes a bit while shooting and in Post. I always try and protect the highlights when shooting. I use false color exclusively at the moment and haven't actually tried out the EL zone exposure tool yet 😳. It may be a grade thing as well. Always learning new and better ways to introduce contrast into images but not overdoing it.
@@DylColeman , CPL is a polarizing filter, it will increase the saturation of the sky, remove bright glare on faces and take about one stop away. Have you ever tried cheaper SD Cards with 12bit 1080p? I am considering fp as a 1080p raw camera, but SD cards can get really expensive, I would appreciate if you could test v30-v60 cards :)
I haven’t had the chance to try any other SDs yet, unfortunately. I don’t have any plans to get any more in the near future but if you have a good (or bad) experience with any of the cheaper ones, definitely let me know
Thanks! I did shoot RAW - 12-bit 1080p CinemaDNG at 24 fps to be precise 🙂 the slow motion was shot at 60 fps. I recorded everything to a very fast Lexar 2000x SD card, so I could free myself if being tethered to the T5 SSD I usually use.
This is amazing! I've been using topaz video AI and the results there are insane. I use it at work all the time, rendering 3D animations to 720 and upresing it to 4k! Did you film this with a gimbal or did you stabilize in post?
Thank you! Glad you enjoyed it 🙂 I’ve only put the fp on a gimbal a couple times while I was in Thailand. All other footage shot handheld and stabilized in post. Enough people have asked about it to warrant making a video about it. Stay tuned

If I got your question right, you're asking if I see a point in converting 4k UHD to HD? Sure. There could always be a creative justification for a unique treatment, post workflow or visual aesthetic. We see all types of filmmakers degrading and "damaging" their very pristine high res images all the time to fit into a specific creative vision. It all depends on the "why"

@@DylColeman Thank you a lot for the answer! I am waiting for my SSD to try highest bitrate (UHD) to see if it is worthy Versus an upscaled HD. It’s definitely worth getting an SSD to record to. Recording in 1080p to an SD card is nice because of the smaller footprint overall, but you are still limited with recording time, as large capacity FAST SD’s are pretty pricey. As for the autofocus, I never really use it. There is no continuous autofocus for video recording with the fp so no tips from me there. Lastly, I always shoot with color mode “off” and apply any color treatment in Post
