The description of transportation in Chinese cities is, in my experience, inaccurate. Tier 1 cities(Beijing, Shanghai, Shenzhen) and Tier 2 cities (Chengdu etc.) are largely built around subways. Even if you live away from the subways, you take the bus or walk to the subway. In the smaller cities, your description is more accurate.

A good session. Generally very well informed. Pennsylvania gas output from fracking is at an all-time high. The problem in Pennsylvania is that there is a glut of stored natural gas because there isn't enough gas pipelines to carry it away. Building that infrastructure is expensive, and that's the real problem. As Martin Wolf stated some time ago, China will get old before it gets rich. Reagan was a totally dishonest politician who played at being an ultra conservative but who in power was a closet liberal. Make of that what you will. Even Obama admired the skills.

The main problem with solar isn't night time or daily fluctuations. Batteries solve this. The main problems are (1) space as noah mentions and (2) winter, especially at higher latitudes. You have to build MASSIVE overcapacity in solar or battery storage to handle this, which massively drives down efficiency, by a factor of 2 or 3. This makes nuclear and wind relatively competitive.

Getting to the china section. Spot on. I'd be even more blunt. The West can 100% build new buildings, this isn't some unique Chinese power. We simply choose not to build because we're romantic about our mouldering old buildings.

The PlayStation's price going down is a terrible example, the business model in that market is that they sell the console (which at this point is an x86 computer) at break even or a loss, and then make up the difference in fees in their store (Fortnite currency), cuts of the price of games, etc. People hate on the new consoles being expensive, but back when the PS5 was introduced it was an incredible deal for the hardware, they actually had to raise prices later (even for the base model), which is rare for gaming consoles.

I enjoy the conversation. Noah's comments about Ukraine-Germany are missing the point that Russia required Ukraine to fully commit to never joining NATO and for whatever reason Ukraine said no. I think German'y efforts to back Ukraine against its own interests is what makes Germany unserious. Germany needed that inexpensive gas from Russia to power its economy (along with the nuclear power it abandoned as Noah points out). Germany is now sputtering as right wing extremist parties rising all through Europe.

Dario - AIs need a system 2 thinking which they just do not have the mechanism at present. But Demis Hassabis team at Deep Mind is developing that right now via step-wise processes that keeps track of its step outcomes and then evaluates the best step by red teaming or adversarial gaming approach. Deep Mind is going to sandbox its approach via using Open World games. Then again OpenAI has got its Q* approach which I don't know much about because its secret but seems a bit over-mathematical in my opinion. Anyhow, the goal is system 2 type thinking via Q* or Open World games. Its mixed up with agentic behaviour which is also system 2 thinking at heart imo. What is Anthropic's approach? I bet there are other ways of doing it - wish I knew, I could come up with some ideas myself. I think its got to be some type of heuristic decision tree, like AlpahGO uses. i.e. pieces or chunks of memory that store outcomes and a way of evaluating all the chunks outcomes - or something like that. (I was a pro contract programmer in a previous life)
