Thanks for another great episode, as a new listener not too well versed in Econ these are a pleasure to listen to. Keep them coming!

Yeah the whole thing (CHIPS reshoring) also has to make sense from the point of view of TSMC too.

IMO Noah does a better job advocating for industrial policy and tariffs here than in prior videos like his debate with Mike Bird. The reason to do industrial policy is because of national security and the defense industrial base. Period. Tying it to jobs and climate change is a way of building support for this sort of policy (since these are effects of subsidies because of how the subsidies are targeted and structured) but the main thing is just national security.
Really, no matter how you look at it Biden's done an immensely large amount of work to counter china from 2022 through 2024, and this is the stuff that paradoxically he gets the least credit for. The energy security, the multilateral agreements with east asia, the CHIPS act, the IRA, going through on a withdrawal from Afghanistan. The tiktok ban. This is all just.... a pretty large list of policies, with a large amount of dollars behind it.

I moved from very lefty democratic Massachusetts to rural poorer northern New York where pretty much everyone is conservative. There are zero issues with Nimby's here i am so surprised. In thory we have zoning and permit requirements but rarly do people ever get a permit to build even on the main road. People here dont think tgey have the right to tell otgers what ti do with their land. And it dies make for areas with very poor looking and trashy homes, but personally i couldn't care less, i dont think i schould have tge right to tell others what to do on their land. I hated all the regulations and NIMBY'S in MA and the extremely high cost and long time to build anything.

I cant vote for a Democrat or anyone who keeps increasing the regulation on diesel truck and tractors. I am a farmer and ee have all diesel trucks and tractors and we spends many thousands per year on this absolute garbage emissions control that always breaks isnt under warranty and gives us less MPG. Our air is cleaner now than ever, tgis is a non issue and it isnt something that can be done anytime soon with electric trucks or tractors the batterys would need to be re charged every 2 hours for 6 hours. Not to mention all of tge state and federal regulations on what we can do with our land by people who have never managed land before and dont live here. I am more concerned than any politician about contaminating my well I dont need to to force me to do anything.
