Full SUP Surf Session - Code 980 - Cypher 7'4
Ben Taylor on the Drone.
Tricky conditions with a fairly straight beachie and lots of people on the good bit.
Made the most of this session though despite having a serious chest infection.

Tow Boogie Sessions Are the Best!
มุมมอง 4.8K2 หลายเดือนก่อน
I had a little break from my Tow Boogie to concentrate on SUP foil for a few months. Getting it back out this last week has been so fun! 15 knot southerly making the waves choppy but still managed to bag a few great rides. For anyone whose been following my journey - I've been working hard to become a great prone foiler. I have a goal to be recognised as one of the best prone foilers out there....

I can categorically say that downwinding has changed me as a person. You're vulnerable. You're tiny compared to the vastness of the ocean. And it's always a challenge of your body, your mind, your choices vs the ocean. And the ocean is never the same. You have to adapt You have to dig deep And a lot of the time you CANT quit. Quit isn't an option. And so often when you can't quit it's amazing t...

TIPS: STAY ON FOIL LONGER IN THE SURF
มุมมอง 3.6K4 หลายเดือนก่อน
You don't have to be super fit to stay on foil for 5 minutes all the way through to one hour. You just need some tips to keep your heart rate down and know where to go at the right time. Let me know any tips you guys have - I missed heaps because there is so much to cover.

Crossing Moreton Bay on a Foil
มุมมอง 3.2K6 หลายเดือนก่อน
I've been wanting to this ever since I started downwinding. Tibby rang me the in the morning and we made the decision at 9am and we were on the road by 10am. It was an hour drive down to our take off location. We packed light - only a fresh set of clothes for the other end. This was one of the most fun days DWding I've ever done and highly recommend any other locals to give it a go when you can.
Small Foil Heavy Fella Downwinding. On foil review of the Code Foils 770R
มุมมอง 3.9K7 หลายเดือนก่อน
I've been blown away by how easy I can paddle up the smaller R series foils in the Code Range and how much low end they have whilst still having great top end! At the end of this run I decided to test the limits of the foil and flat water pump across a bay with a straight cross shore wind. Needless to say I was impressed. Whole setup was the 770R with the Medium Fuse 135R and a 75cm Mast Amos B...

High Tide and High Vibes with Foil Drive
Hi Dave, is it a custom or the 36l?
It's the 36L
Chatted with a guy at a Sth coast river mouth today whilst proning…… he loves it. Thanks for your perspective. A different lens & really insightful. Cheers
Would this pair with a 1210 takuma foil?
@@matthenwood5131 it’ll pair with any brand and foil.
Great discussion!
Excellent video Dave, with so many helpful & practical tips. Your comment of cutting R or L in between waves after take-off so helpful to build speed. Before watching your video, I would occasionally back-stall on the bump in front of me right after getting on to foil from the downhill, then not having enough speed trying to go uphill on bump in front.
Hey Lord it would very useful to light wind strugglers if you could develop a tuto on how you perform your jibe from 1:01 to 1:08 ! The wind appears to be very very light at that moment, as witnessed by the two wings waiting on the surface when you triggered your jibe.
Nice work with the camera and cinematography. If I hadn't read your commentary , and experienced two similar episodes myself , I would have said it is an inherent issue with rear shock and jack knifing shortly there after. Your rear wheel becomes air borne , shortly before over the handle bars you go. Had this on an ill suited ebike and and a very good manual MTB. I , myself , just have to figure out how a dirty great stick leapt off the side of the track into my frame ( and is why I don't take my expensive camera with me). Video was worth watching Dave .
Great video. I have one comment. Don't take off behind a surfer 0:32 . I'm not doubting your ability but surfers are used to wiping out and falling away from their boards in all sorts of unpredictable fashion, especially beginners and intermediate. They don't want to get speared/sliced by your foil wing as you try to maneuver around them. Your board/wing combo is way more dangerous to others obviously. You have so much more capability to go to an uncrowded area and should never need to drop in behind a surfer. That should be basic foil etiquette . I would suggest if you see that beginner going for the wave just bail out and catch another one.
Thanks for your comment. But no that's not foil etiquette. Surf etiquette is still in play when you are in a line up and this lady didn't once look to her left. Now the etqeutte I showed her was that I didn't yell at her. I just waited for her to finish the wave and get off. You are looking at this wrong - and maybe you haven't been a surfer. The rider on the inside has priority - doesn't matter what craft you're on. I didn't drop in on the inside of her - she dropped in on me. She actually had plenty of space. Either way - the future of foiling is NOT where foilers have to take responsibility for EVERYTHING. We are a dangerous craft but so are 12kg longboards. We are a part of the line up and deserve respect also - things like - don't drop in on us either :) I often tell Surfers to paddle because I know I can get around them and it means they don't have to wait for the next wave.
@@davewestfoils Dave I have been a surfer for most of my life. I also sup. and I know to not mingle closely with surfers in the takeoff zone. The sup is very unwieldy and needs much more space to co-exist safely. I am however not a foiler so will admit I don't know every aspect of the foilers perspective in this situation. However I think its safe to say foilers, sups, surfers do not mix well in close proximity to each other. Foiling is the newcomer to the water sports and therefore they/you need to take more caution that you integrate into the ecosystem not the other way around. Not everyone is familiar with foils and you clearly have the paddling/foiling advantage to catching the wave. So you bare way more responsibility there. Please don't make false comparison to longboards and foils. New surfers starting out on longboards don't need helmets and impact vests like a foiler does. Right now foiling is a very new sport and you are fortunate to share the lineup as the only foiler out there. Now imagine several years down the road what the picture will look like when there are multiple more foilers out in the water. Do you think the same rules are going to apply?
@ thanks for your thoughts.
Hi Dave, i started to Downwind with Art Pro 1401, Now I want something smaller, which code would you recommend me? Thanks 🤙
I wouldn't jump down size too far - wihtout any context the 860r is the best option for most people from 75-95 kgs
Thank you Sir 🙏🏾🤙🏽
hi dave you thnk art v2 999 would work on this same conditions ?
Good idea. Will try when I start to learn.
Very cool vid and specs for a sup surf foil board.
Fabulous content Dave. How different would this session have been for you if you elected to utilise your Foil Drive system? Thank you if able to answer.
Great practice!
Less is more bro… And yo nailed dat…(respect. From me anyways )
Great video! The boards looks great. Complete understood your advise for beginners whici is my case. One question: if you want learn DW using Foild Drive as assist would the 7'4 be good in your opinion or should stick to long ones? Thanks
Hey Daniel - I don't think you need a board that big to learn to FD DW on personally. But lots of people do - it's just not the way I'd tell people to do it. I'd be more inclined to learn on like a 5'4 Kruzer and learn to prone DW then get a full size SUP once you've started reading the bumps well on the FD and coming in without having to use the motor much.
I've been thinking about how biplanes can fly at such slow speeds and about a second foil mounted high on the mast. More lift at slow speeds could break the surface tension and lift the hull. At this point the upper foil clears the water reducing drag. During re-entry the upper foil may soften the landing or allow flight at slower speeds. I've also been thinking about a dual side by side mast for stability but now there's already a design like that for pump foiling.
the high difficulty of this sport it stoping me and thinking of buying a sup foil
Great info Dave 🤙
I can totally see your style improving - it was already good but this is looking so slick! Nice work mate - inspiring.
Excellent foil progression video !
There are a small handful of SUPfoil videos I repeat watch just for the joy of it and to study the pump and technique. Adding this to that group! Thanks for the stroke and it has been fun learning along side you via video for the last couple years. Cheers! You fuckin made it!!🙌
Ah bro thanks so much! Glad you've come on the journey!

Thanks again for making this helpful video Dave. I’m 90kg with 130 litre board, 2000 foil wing, 5.5 wing - but still struggling in light winds. Do you think I should invest in 7 metre wing or bigger board? Thanks Dave 🙂
@@trev1978 yup 7’ wing is the way to go Everything else is already pretty huge.
@@davewestfoils Thanks very much Dave! Love your work 😎

What size / shape board should I get if I want to get into SUP foil in the surf? I can wing foil in waves, but total novice with a paddle. No real downwind opportunities here so don't need a DW board. 85kg reasonably fit and strong.
Yeah great question
Sup foiling is so underrated. Great footage 👏

Is it easier to pump with the paddle it seems u are using the paddle strategically
@@apricotscrub Yeah just depends. It definitely helps to share the fatigue.
Why do You prefer 150 over 142 with the 980 and that board?
@@apricotscrub i use the 150 in all my surfing now. Sup or prone. Gives me a little more low end but I can still turn it plenty hard.
@@davewestfoils how do u like the 120 for surfing does it make the low end too high?
When do you choose the sup over prone?
@@TheMitchell898 jus to change things up. And it’s great training for downwinding. And it means when you get on your prone board pumping feels super easy.
Seems the sup is almost useless
@@dmitry4137 as in non foil SUP?
@@davewestfoils sorry, i mean the paddle
Please don’t suggest foil drive. You still need to balance with the paddle
