Blackbear Pass and Imogene Pass - in a 30 year old Land Cruiser
This is my first major trip in the Land Cruiser - 1000 miles to Colorado, over 2 passes, and 1000 miles back to Montana. Can my 30 year old truck make the trip?
I have to say, the trail to and from each pass is a great drive. I expected just a boring gravel road leading up to an epic pass experience, but I actually really enjoyed the whole drive. More technical than I thought. Not difficult or extreme, but just rough enough to make it a good time.

    I was the first to fully desmog a 3FE (EGR delete, air injection system removal, and cat removal), back in 2004/2005 on my FJ62. That guide you reference is the one I wrote and posted to IH8Mud back in 2005. 19 years later and I have zero regrets. It's still a great way to free up power otherwise robbed from the engine, remove unreliable components (due to excessive age and wear at this point), simplify the engine layout, further increase its longevity, and free up real estate in the engine bay. Something to add that's not really desmog related but will help immensely with keeping your air intake clean is to plumb in a PCV catch can in line between your PCV valve and the intake manifold. Doing that along with eliminating the introduction of carbon from the EGR system by doing the EGR delete will allow your intake manifold to stay completely clean inside for the life of the engine. If you really want to "do it right" you could take off the manifold and get it hot tanked so you're starting with a pristine intake and no more buildup of EGR carbon or PCV sludge in it. As far as kits, Vintage TEQ Parts (no business affiliation; we do help each other often on Cruiser related tech issues though) is putting together a full 3FE desmog kit that'll have all the OEM Toyota parts necessary to do the job (save for a PCV catch can, since that's not part of the overall desmog process). It'll have a few different parts from what I originally used to streamline the process a little, based on small refinements I've made since first doing my desmog.

    • @ldooffroad1823
      @ldooffroad1823 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I'm hoping to edit and release the LS swap videos this year. Sorry for the long wait. The LS power definitely helps move the bigger tires, and depending on what tire size you want, it may not be necessary to regear to 4.88s. Currently I'm on 35s with 4.88s and the V8 with GM 4L60 tranny. This combo is slightly undergeared, meaning I run slower than my speedo says. It works fine, and would allow me to run 37s without regearing, I think. If you're still running the stock engine, I would definitely consider regearing to 4.88s if you run 33s or bigger.

I am going to swap my landcruiser but in the mean time while I wait for this motor to die I want to try and get a little more performance and gas mileage. The way it sits now it just seems tired but I still have no problems going up anything. I don't know about you but if I had 100,000 miles or less I wouldn't change the motor but as I approach up 300,000 I am torn between the good ole LS swap or a diesel swap like a duramax 6.6 or a cummins 5.9

    Question please why did you change the diff is it because the lack of power on bigger tires? And why did you have to do the front as surely not in 4x4 modes all time. And last is the new gearing 4.88 to1 hope you got the power you wanted thankfully 👍

    • @zaceastwood6871
      @zaceastwood6871 ปีที่แล้ว

      Short answer: yes, re-gearing will restore a sense of power lost with bigger tires - the real issue is that your RPMs are different from stock when you have bigger-than-stock tires. The 80 Series Land Cruiser (US version) has full time AWD, not 2WD, so the front is always engaged. Plus you should never have your differentials geared differently - everything will break - your front axle would try to go a different speed from your rear axle.

    Hi, my name is Dave. I met you a few days ago when your group came through Fort Bragg Calif after coming down from Lake Tahoe. I had the brown 1998 two wheel drive Dodge Ram 2500. I checked this video a few days ago, and wow was it great. I love watching the trails you and others go on. So scenic, and of course heart pounding. Keep up the adventure. Looks like a great way to explore, relax and be terrified at the same time. I'll check out your other videos over the next couple of months. I follow a lot of Overlander's and had to subscribed to your channel too. Take care and stay well.

    Hows the exhaust wrap holding up? Was there a significant drop in temperature coming off the exhaust where you wrapped it?

    1 year later, any thoughts/regrets? Thinking about pulling the trigger on this very soon.
